Abstract:Recently, first-order phase transitions have been predicted as an effect of the inclusion of quark anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) in the hot and magnetized Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model (NJL). These transitions appear in the chiral condensate for different combinations of AMM and magnetic fields and could lead to inverse magnetic catalysis. However, in this work, we show that the predicted first-order phase transitions are related to regularization-dependent issues. To show this, we explore, in the context of the vacuum magnetic regularization (VMR) scheme, two different scenarios: when mass-dependent (MD) and mass-independent (MI) terms are present in the subtraction of the divergences. In the MD case, as we increase the AMM value, it is observed the appearance of a nonmassive minimum in the thermodynamical potential, which induces a first-order phase transition from the massive minimum. We argue that the MD terms must be avoided in order to satisfy the predictions of Lattice QCD, and we propose a MI solution that is valid in the limit which the magnetic fields are smaller than the squared of vacuum effective quark mass. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.016011 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is whether the first - order phase transitions predicted in the Nambu - Jona - Lasinio (NJL) model containing quark anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) under strong magnetic field conditions are artificial results due to the choice of regularization method. Specifically, the paper explores whether these first - order phase transitions are related to the mass - dependent terms in the regularization process and proposes a mass - independent regularization scheme to avoid these problems.
### Background
In the non - perturbative region of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of quarks is caused by dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. This breaking endows quarks with an anomalous magnetic moment. In recent years, it has been found that first - order phase transitions may occur in the thermally magnetized NJL model containing quark AMM. These phase transitions occur in the chiral condensate, and different combinations of AMM and magnetic fields can lead to the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon. However, these predicted first - order phase transitions may be related to the choice of regularization method.
### Research Objectives
The main objective of this paper is to apply the vacuum magnetic regularization (VMR) scheme to study the thermodynamic potential of the two - flavor NJL model containing quark AMM and explore the following two key points:
1. **Identifying Mass - Dependent Terms**: In the ultraviolet limit expansion of the thermodynamic potential, identify the mass - dependent terms proportional to \(O(eB^{2})\). These terms will cause the thermodynamic potential to decrease in the \(M = 0\) region under strong magnetic fields or strong quark AMM values, thus inducing the possibility of first - order phase transitions. The author believes that these mass - dependent terms are unphysical and should be avoided.
2. **Proposing a Mass - Independent Regularization Scheme**: In the limit of \(\left|q_{f}eB\right|/M_{0}^{2}\to0\), apply the Schwinger hypothesis to eliminate the additional mass - dependent terms in the ultraviolet limit. The resulting Lagrangian is consistent with that used by Dittrich in reference [28].
### Main Findings
1. **The Influence of Mass - Dependent Terms**: Through numerical results, the author shows that in the case of including mass - dependent terms, as the quark AMM value increases, the minimum value of the thermodynamic potential changes from \(M\sim0.3\) GeV to \(M = 0\), resulting in the appearance of a first - order phase transition.
2. **The Effect of Mass - Independent Regularization**: When assuming \(2(a_{f}B)^{2}M^{2}+s_{f}2Ba_{f}M = 0\), the usually predicted first - order phase transition no longer appears, indicating that these mass - dependent terms are the main reasons for the imbalance of the thermodynamic potential.
### Conclusions
By applying the VMR scheme, this paper identifies and discusses the role of mass - dependent terms in the thermodynamic potential and proposes a mass - independent regularization scheme. This scheme eliminates the additional mass - dependent terms in the limit of \(\left|q_{f}eB\right|/M_{0}^{2}\ll1\) and avoids unphysical first - order phase transitions. This result is consistent with the predictions of lattice QCD, indicating that under an appropriate regularization scheme, the NJL model containing quark AMM will not have first - order phase transitions.
### Formula Examples
- The expression of the thermodynamic potential:
\[
\Omega=\frac{(M - m)^{2}}{4G}+\Omega_{\text{mag}}(M,B)
\]
- The thermodynamic potential of the magnetic field contribution:
\[
\Omega_{\text{mag}}(M,B)=-N_{c}\sum_{f = u,d}\left|B_{f}\right|\sum_{n = 0}^{\infty}\sum_{s=\pm1}\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}\frac{dp_{3}}{4\pi^{2}}E_{f,n,s}

- The energy dispersion relation:
\[
E_{f,n,s}=\sqrt{p_{3}^{2}+(M_{f,n,s}-sa_{f}B)^{2}}
\]
- The coefficient of the mass - dependent term:
\[
R_{f}(B_{f},M)=\frac{\left|B_{f}\right|^{2}}{3}-\frac{(a_{f}B)^{4}}{6}+2(a_{f}B)^{2}M
