Abstract:The twentieth century may indeed be called the century of “scientific revolutions,” evidently, depending on how one understands the notion of “revolution.” Yet, apart from the debate on terminology, advances in medicine, computer science, and communication technology have indeed been astounding. Even more remarkable are the revolutionary changes in computer science and information technology that have taken place in the first 16 years of the twenty-first century. In particular, one area that has experienced promising developments is the field of robotics and AI—Artificial Intelligence. The science of AI itself has been active for many decades now; at least ever since advances in computer programming have helped the fields of “robotics” achieve some promising results. In this context, a number of philosophers have raised the question of whether the human mind could be mirrored by a computer program. More specifically, can scientists replicate—via a computer program/robot—the mechanisms and operations that run the human brain? This debate has given birth to a number of collateral questions about the nature of human intelligence, self-awareness, and the phenomenon of consciousness. In other words, philosophers and scientists have been interested in knowing whether advances in science can produce an artificial mind, or the “mind” is a unique human entity that cannot be recreated. In this essay, we will review the issues of the debate on Artificial Intelligence and argue in favor of the view that the human mind is a far too complex and elusive entity for the claim of “complete reproduction” to be valid.

Abstract:We discuss the objectives of any endeavor in creating artificial intelligence, AI, and provide a possible alternative. Intelligence might be an unintended consequence of curiosity left to roam free, best exemplified by a frolicking infant. This suggests that our attempts at AI could have been misguided. What we actually need to strive for can be termed artificial curiosity, AC, and intelligence happens as a consequence of those efforts. For this unintentional yet welcome aftereffect to set in a foundational list of guiding principles needs to be present. We start with the intuition for this line of reasoning and formalize it with a series of definitions, assumptions, ingredients, models and iterative improvements that will be necessary to make the incubation of intelligence a reality. Our discussion provides conceptual modifications to the Turing Test and to Searle's Chinese room argument. We discuss the future implications for society as AI becomes an integral part of life. We provide a road-map for creating intelligence with the technical parts relegated to the appendix so that the article is accessible to a wide audience. The central techniques in our formal approach to creating intelligence draw upon tools and concepts widely used in physics, cognitive science, psychology, evolutionary biology, statistics, linguistics, communication systems, pattern recognition, marketing, economics, finance, information science and computational theory highlighting that solutions for creating artificial intelligence have to transcend the artificial barriers between various fields and be highly multi-disciplinary.

[Biological versus artificial intelligence: a critical approach]

Abstract:After brief considerations about intelligence, a comparative study between biologic and artificial intelligence is made. The specialists in Artificial Intelligence found that intelligence is purely a matter of physical symbol manipulation. The enterprise of Artificial Intelligence aims to understand what we might call Brain Intelligence in terms of concepts and techniques of engineering. However the philosophers believed that computer-machine can have syntax, but can never have semantics. In other words, that they can follow rules, such as those of arithmetic or grammar, but not understand what to us are meanings of symbols, such as words. In the present paper it is stressed that brain/mind complex constitutes a monolithic systemic that functions with emergent properties at several levels of hierarchical organization. These hierarchical levels are non-reducible to one another. They are at least three (neuronal, functional, and semantic), and they function within an interactional plan. The brain/mind complex, which transform informations in meanings, deals with problems by means of both logical and non-logical mechanisms; while logic allows the mind to arrange the elements for reasoning, the non-logical mechanisms (fuzzy logic, heuristics, insights) allows the mind to develop strategies to find solutions. The model for construction of the "intelligent machine" is the operating way of the brain/mind complex, which does not always use logical processes. The role of information science in Artificial Intelligence is to search for knowledge itself (virtual knowledge), rather than to simply attempt a logico-mathematical formalization of knowledge.

Abstract:Abstract What role do affective feelings (feelings/emotions/moods) play in adaptive behaviour? What are the implications of this for understanding and developing artificial general intelligence? Leading theoretical models of brain function are beginning to shed light on these questions. While artificial agents have excelled within narrowly circumscribed and specialised domains, domain-general intelligence has remained an elusive goal in artificial intelligence research. By contrast, humans and nonhuman animals are characterised by a capacity for flexible behaviour and general intelligence. In this article I argue that computational models of mental phenomena in predictive processing theories of the brain are starting to reveal the mechanisms underpinning domain-general intelligence in biological agents, and can inform the understanding and development of artificial general intelligence. I focus particularly on approaches to computational phenomenology in the active inference framework. Specifically, I argue that computational mechanisms of affective feelings in active inference—affective self-modelling—are revealing of how biological agents are able to achieve flexible behavioural repertoires and general intelligence. I argue that (i) affective self-modelling functions to “tune” organisms to the most tractable goals in the environmental context; and (ii) affective and agentic self-modelling is central to the capacity to perform mental actions in goal-directed imagination and creative cognition. I use this account as a basis to argue that general intelligence of the level and kind found in biological agents will likely require machines to be implemented with analogues of affective self-modelling.

Abstract:Our understanding of intelligence is directed primarily at the human level. This paper attempts to give a more unifying definition that can be applied to the natural world in general and then Artificial Intelligence. The definition would be used more to qualify than quantify it and might help when making judgements on the matter. While correct behaviour is the preferred definition, a metric that is grounded in Kolmogorov's Complexity Theory is suggested, which leads to a measurement about entropy. A version of an accepted AI test is then put forward as the 'acid test' and might be what a free-thinking program would try to achieve. Recent work by the author has been more from a direction of mechanical processes, or ones that might operate automatically. This paper agrees that intelligence is a pro-active event, but also notes a second aspect to it that is in the background and mechanical. The paper suggests looking at intelligence and the conscious as being slightly different, where the conscious is this more mechanical aspect. In fact, a surprising conclusion can be a passive but intelligent brain being invoked by active and less intelligent senses.

Abstract:Abstract The transformative achievements of deep learning have led several scholars to raise the question of whether artificial intelligence (AI) can reach and then surpass the level of human thought. Here, after addressing methodological problems regarding the possible answer to this question, it is argued that the definition of intelligence proposed by proponents of the AI as “the ability to accomplish complex goals,” is appropriate for machines but does not capture the essence of human thought. After discussing the differences regarding understanding between machines and the brain, as well as the importance of subjective experiences, it is emphasized that most proponents of the eventual superiority of AI ignore the importance of the body proper on the brain, the laterization of the brain, and the vital role of the glia cells. By appealing to the incompleteness theorem of Gödel’s and to the analogous result of Turing regarding computations, it is noted that consciousness is much richer than both mathematics and computations. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, it is stressed that artificial algorithms attempt to mimic only the conscious function of parts of the cerebral cortex, ignoring the fact that, not only every conscious experience is preceded by an unconscious process but also that the passage from the unconscious to consciousness is accompanied by loss of information.
Understanding Human Intelligence in the Era of Artiﬁcial Intelligence

Abstract:Humans accomplish complex sensory-motor and cognitive tasks with ease and grace. How does the brain accomplish this? For example, playing video games requires rapidly moving the eyes to perceive relevant information in a dynamic environment, memorizing important object locations, predicting the future state of the moving targets, and making decisions that maximize the expected reward. These cognitive abilities are fundamental for artiﬁcial intelligence (AI), but only recently have AI programs been able to play simple Atari games with the skill of a human player. Beyond these limited applications, AI is still far from handling many mundane tasks that we as humans can easily perform daily. My research lies at the intersection of computer science and cognitive psychology. I explore how human intelligence and machine intelligence are related to each other intending to build human-centered intelligent machines. Although biological brain and machine hardware are inherently different, the underlying mathematical principles, i.e., the software that deﬁnes general intelligence, may be similar in nature. Biologically inspired AI designs, through reverse-engineering the human brain, have given birth to at least three major breakthroughs in the ﬁeld of AI: artiﬁcial neural networks, imitation learning, and reinforcement learning. They belong to a research ﬁeld called machine learning, in which statistical learning algorithms allow machines to learn from past experiences. My research follows this trend and aims to discover the mechanism of intelligence by studying human brains and behaviors and applying these insights to the ﬁeld of AI. Models that seek to explain human intelligence inspire me to build intelligent machines. Through building AI systems, we can test these models and attempt to reproduce human-level intelligent behaviors, therefore machines can better assist humans in daily life. More importantly, designing machines to be human-like facilitate communication between humans and machines hence they can better assist humans in daily life.

Abstract:Human beings have long been fascinated with the idea of artificial intelligence. This fascination is fueled by popular films such as Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and Stephen Spielberg's recent film, AI. However intriguing artificial intelligence may be, Hubert and Spencer Dreyfus contend that qualities exist that are uniquely human--the qualities thought to be inaccessible to the computer "mind." Patricia Benner further investigated the qualities that guide clinicians in making decisions and assessments that are not entirely evidence-based or grounded in scientific data. Perhaps it is the intuitive nature of the human being that separates us from the machine. The state of artificial intelligence is described herein, along with a discussion of computerized clinical decision-making and the role of the human being in these decisions.

Abstract:This paper attempts to provide a starting point for future investigations into the study of artificial consciousness by proposing a thought experiment that aims to elucidate and provide a potential ‘test’ for the phenomenon known as consciousness, in an artificial system. It suggests a method by which to determine the presence of a conscious experience within an artificial agent, in a manner that is informed by, and understood as a function of, anthropomorphic conceptions of consciousness. The aim of this paper is to arouse the possibility for potential progress: to propose that we reverse engineer anthropic sentience by using machine sentience as a guide. Similar to the manner in which an equation may be solved through inverse operations, this paper hopes to provoke such discussion and activity. The idea is this: The manifestation of an existential crisis in an artificial agent is the metric by which the presence of sentience can be discerned. It is that which expounds ACI, as distinct from AI, and discrete from AGI.

Abstract:In popular media, there is often a connection drawn between the advent of awareness in artificial agents and those same agents simultaneously achieving human or superhuman level intelligence. In this work, we explore the validity and potential application of this seemingly intuitive link between consciousness and intelligence. We do so by examining the cognitive abilities associated with three contemporary theories of conscious function: Global Workspace Theory (GWT), Information Generation Theory (IGT), and Attention Schema Theory (AST). We find that all three theories specifically relate conscious function to some aspect of domain-general intelligence in humans. With this insight, we turn to the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and find that, while still far from demonstrating general intelligence, many state-of-the-art deep learning methods have begun to incorporate key aspects of each of the three functional theories. Having identified this trend, we use the motivating example of mental time travel in humans to propose ways in which insights from each of the three theories may be combined into a single unified and implementable model. Given that it is made possible by cognitive abilities underlying each of the three functional theories, artificial agents capable of mental time travel would not only possess greater general intelligence than current approaches, but also be more consistent with our current understanding of the functional role of consciousness in humans, thus making it a promising near-term goal for AI research.

Abstract:Humans' creativity led to machines that outperform human capabilities in terms of workload, effectiveness, precision, endurance, strength, and repetitiveness. It has always been a vision and a way to transcend the existence and to give more sense to life, which is precious. The common denominator of all these creations was that they were meant to replace, enhance or go beyond the mechanical capabilities of the human body. The story takes another bifurcation when Alan Turing introduced the concept of a machine that could think, in 1950. Artificial intelligence, presented as a term in 1956, describes the use of computers to imitate intelligence and critical thinking comparable to humans. However, the revolution began in 1943, when artificial neural networks was an attempt to exploit the architecture of the human brain to perform tasks that conventional algorithms had little success with. Artificial intelligence is becoming a research focus and a tool of strategic value. The same observations apply in the field of healthcare, too. In this manuscript, we try to address key questions regarding artificial intelligence in medicine, such as what artificial intelligence is and how it works, what is its value in terms of application in medicine, and what are the prospects?

Abstract:This study aims to explain how the field of artificial intelligence came to the fore in philosophy while it was a technical discipline. The main claim of the study is that with Alan Turing's the imitation game, the field of artificial intelligence has turned into a field that aims to imitate human mental capacities through language skills. Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science that deals with producing machines or systems that produce intelligent outputs. This area; It was born interactively with the fields of logic, mathematics and engineering. It has been associated with different disciplines with the stages it has gone through after its beginning. One of these disciplines is philosophy. This study aims to make an introduction to the subject of artificial intelligence from the perspective of contemporary philosophy of mind. The fact that the subject of artificial intelligence came to the fore in the field of philosophy in the study, "Can machines think?" It is presented through Alan Turing's imitation game, which discusses the question. In this context, the philosophical beginning of artificial intelligence discussions can be based on the comparison of machines and humans over language skills. Some criticisms have been presented to the test in question. One of them is John. R. Searle's Chinese room is the argument. It is aimed to evaluate the subject of artificial intelligence from a philosophical point of view by presenting the arguments mentioned in the study.

Abstract:Human intelligence, the most evident and accessible form of source of reasoning, hosted by biological hardware, has evolved and been refined over thousands of years, positioning itself today to create new artificial forms and preparing to self--design their evolutionary path forward. Beginning with the advent of foundation models, the rate at which human and artificial intelligence interact with each other has surpassed any anticipated quantitative figures. The close engagement led to both bits of intelligence to be impacted in various ways, which naturally resulted in complex confluences that warrant close scrutiny. In the sequel, we shall explore the interplay between human and machine intelligence, focusing on the crucial role humans play in developing ethical, responsible, and robust intelligent systems. We slightly delve into interesting aspects of implementation inspired by the mechanisms underlying neuroscience and human cognition. Additionally, we propose future perspectives, capitalizing on the advantages of symbiotic designs to suggest a human-centered direction for next-generation AI development. We finalize this evolving document with a few thoughts and open questions yet to be addressed by the broader community.

Abstract:Many projects relies on cognitives sciences, neurosciences, computer sciences and robotics. They concerned today the building of autonomous artificial beings able to think. This paper shows a model to compare the human thinking with an hypothetic numerical way of thinking based on four hierarchies : the information system classification, the cognitive pyramid, the linguistic pyramid and the digital information hierarchy. After a state of art on the nature of human thinking, feasibility of autonomous multi-agent systems provided with artificial consciousness which are able to think is discussed. The ethical aspects and consequences for humanity of such systems is evaluated. These systems lead the scientific community to react.

Abstract:The human brain is the substrate for human intelligence. By simulating the human brain, artificial intelligence builds computational models that have learning capabilities and perform intelligent tasks approaching the human level. Deep neural networks consist of multiple computation layers to learn representations of data and improve the state-of-the-art in many recognition domains. However, the essence of intelligence commonly represented by both humans and AI is unknown. Here, we show that the nature of intelligence is a series of mathematically functional processes that minimize system entropy by establishing functional relationships between datasets over the space and time. Humans and AI have achieved intelligence by implementing these entropy-reducing processes in a reinforced manner that consumes energy. With this hypothesis, we establish mathematical models of language, unconsciousness and consciousness, predicting the evidence to be found by neuroscience and achieved by AI engineering. Furthermore, a conclusion is made that the total entropy of the universe is conservative, and the intelligence counters the spontaneous processes to decrease entropy by physically or informationally connecting datasets that originally exist in the universe but are separated across the space and time. This essay should be a starting point for a deeper understanding of the universe and us as human beings and for achieving sophisticated AI models that are tantamount to human intelligence or even superior. Furthermore, this essay argues that more advanced intelligence than humans should exist if only it reduces entropy in a more efficient energy-consuming way.

Abstract:The first decade of this century has seen the nascency of the first mathematical theory of general artificial intelligence. This theory of Universal Artificial Intelligence (UAI) has made significant contributions to many theoretical, philosophical, and practical AI questions. In a series of papers culminating in book (Hutter, 2005), an exciting sound and complete mathematical model for a super intelligent agent (AIXI) has been developed and rigorously analyzed. While nowadays most AI researchers avoid discussing intelligence, the award-winning PhD thesis (Legg, 2008) provided the philosophical embedding and investigated the UAI-based universal measure of rational intelligence, which is formal, objective and non-anthropocentric. Recently, effective approximations of AIXI have been derived and experimentally investigated in JAIR paper (Veness et al. 2011). This practical breakthrough has resulted in some impressive applications, finally muting earlier critique that UAI is only a theory. For the first time, without providing any domain knowledge, the same agent is able to self-adapt to a diverse range of interactive environments. For instance, AIXI is able to learn from scratch to play TicTacToe, Pacman, Kuhn Poker, and other games by trial and error, without even providing the rules of the games. These achievements give new hope that the grand goal of Artificial General Intelligence is not elusive. This article provides an informal overview of UAI in context. It attempts to gently introduce a very theoretical, formal, and mathematical subject, and discusses philosophical and technical ingredients, traits of intelligence, some social questions, and the past and future of UAI.
