Abstract:The twentieth century may indeed be called the century of “scientific revolutions,” evidently, depending on how one understands the notion of “revolution.” Yet, apart from the debate on terminology, advances in medicine, computer science, and communication technology have indeed been astounding. Even more remarkable are the revolutionary changes in computer science and information technology that have taken place in the first 16 years of the twenty-first century. In particular, one area that has experienced promising developments is the field of robotics and AI—Artificial Intelligence. The science of AI itself has been active for many decades now; at least ever since advances in computer programming have helped the fields of “robotics” achieve some promising results. In this context, a number of philosophers have raised the question of whether the human mind could be mirrored by a computer program. More specifically, can scientists replicate—via a computer program/robot—the mechanisms and operations that run the human brain? This debate has given birth to a number of collateral questions about the nature of human intelligence, self-awareness, and the phenomenon of consciousness. In other words, philosophers and scientists have been interested in knowing whether advances in science can produce an artificial mind, or the “mind” is a unique human entity that cannot be recreated. In this essay, we will review the issues of the debate on Artificial Intelligence and argue in favor of the view that the human mind is a far too complex and elusive entity for the claim of “complete reproduction” to be valid.

Abstract:This scholarly endeavor endeavors to illumine the intricate interplay between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Research Methodology, proffering a comprehensive exploration of global trends and best practices. Drawing upon a rigorous review of extant literature, we critically analyze the transformative role of AI in shaping research paradigms and methodologies (Turing, 1936; McCarthy, Minsky, Rochester, & Shannon, 1955). This discourse underscores the relentless progression of AI in transmogrifying diverse sectors, ranging from healthcare and finance to environmental science, by harnessing the power of innovative research methodologies (Fisher, 1925; Samuel, 1959). Throughout, we highlight the myriad ways in which AI and research methodology have mutually enriched each other, fostering a paradigm shift towards data-driven decision-making, increased prediction precision, and rampant innovation (Bishop, 2006). Understanding Human Intelligence in the Era of Artiﬁcial Intelligence

Abstract:Humans accomplish complex sensory-motor and cognitive tasks with ease and grace. How does the brain accomplish this? For example, playing video games requires rapidly moving the eyes to perceive relevant information in a dynamic environment, memorizing important object locations, predicting the future state of the moving targets, and making decisions that maximize the expected reward. These cognitive abilities are fundamental for artiﬁcial intelligence (AI), but only recently have AI programs been able to play simple Atari games with the skill of a human player. Beyond these limited applications, AI is still far from handling many mundane tasks that we as humans can easily perform daily. My research lies at the intersection of computer science and cognitive psychology. I explore how human intelligence and machine intelligence are related to each other intending to build human-centered intelligent machines. Although biological brain and machine hardware are inherently different, the underlying mathematical principles, i.e., the software that deﬁnes general intelligence, may be similar in nature. Biologically inspired AI designs, through reverse-engineering the human brain, have given birth to at least three major breakthroughs in the ﬁeld of AI: artiﬁcial neural networks, imitation learning, and reinforcement learning. They belong to a research ﬁeld called machine learning, in which statistical learning algorithms allow machines to learn from past experiences. My research follows this trend and aims to discover the mechanism of intelligence by studying human brains and behaviors and applying these insights to the ﬁeld of AI. Models that seek to explain human intelligence inspire me to build intelligent machines. Through building AI systems, we can test these models and attempt to reproduce human-level intelligent behaviors, therefore machines can better assist humans in daily life. More importantly, designing machines to be human-like facilitate communication between humans and machines hence they can better assist humans in daily life.

Abstract:The paper aims to address several interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research issues at the confluence of psychology with the field of artificial intelligence technologies, namely how the integration of big data analytics, advancements in human-computer interaction (HCI), and innovations in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), can transform psychological research and practice. The paper explores the historical foundations and contemporary developments in the interdisciplinary integration of AI technologies with psychological research and practice. Beginning with early computational models of cognition, the discussion highlights the evolution of AI applications in psychological analysis, including machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), HCI and BCIs. These technologies have not only enhanced the scalability and personalization of mental health care but have also introduced new methods for real-time feedback in therapeutic settings. Abstract:AI can even outperform humans in many tasks such as winning games like Go and poker as well as engaging in creative endeavours in writing novels and music. Despite this, it is still a long way from building artificial human intelligence. Current AIs are only designed to excel in their intended functions and cannot generate knowledge to new tasks and situations. For AI to achieve artificial human intelligence requires us to study and understand the human brain. Neuroscience is the study of the anatomy and physiology of the human brain. It provides us interesting insights into how the brain works to develop better AI systems. Conversely, better AI systems can help drive neuroscience forward and further unlock the secrets of the brain. Neuroscience and AI are closely related. The synergy of the two will benefit each other. Besides the benefits of neuroscience for AI research, neuroscience also has important implications for machine learning. This chapter discusses the implications of neuroscience for general artificial intelligence and the benefits of AI for neuroscience research.

Abstract:This paper examines the human relationship to technology, and AI in particular, including the proposition that algorithms are the new unconscious. Key is the question of how much human ability will be duplicated and transcended by general machine intelligence. More and more people are seeking connection via social media and interaction with artificial beings. The paper examines what it means to be human and which of these traits are already or will be replicated by AI. Therapy bots already exist. It is easier to envision AI therapy guided by CBT manuals than psychoanalytic techniques. Yet, a demonstration of how AI can already perform dream analysis reaching beyond a dream's manifest content is presented. The reader is left to consider whether these findings demand a new role for psychoanalysis in supporting, sustaining, and reframing our humanity as we create technology that transcends our abilities.

Abstract:Human intelligence, the most evident and accessible form of source of reasoning, hosted by biological hardware, has evolved and been refined over thousands of years, positioning itself today to create new artificial forms and preparing to self--design their evolutionary path forward. Beginning with the advent of foundation models, the rate at which human and artificial intelligence interact with each other has surpassed any anticipated quantitative figures. The close engagement led to both bits of intelligence to be impacted in various ways, which naturally resulted in complex confluences that warrant close scrutiny. In the sequel, we shall explore the interplay between human and machine intelligence, focusing on the crucial role humans play in developing ethical, responsible, and robust intelligent systems. We slightly delve into interesting aspects of implementation inspired by the mechanisms underlying neuroscience and human cognition. Additionally, we propose future perspectives, capitalizing on the advantages of symbiotic designs to suggest a human-centered direction for next-generation AI development. We finalize this evolving document with a few thoughts and open questions yet to be addressed by the broader community.

Abstract:"Artificial humans", so-called "Embodied Conversational Agents" and humanoid robots, are assumed to facilitate human-technology interaction referring to the unique human capacities of interpersonal communication and social information processing. While early research and development in artificial intelligence (AI) focused on processing and production of natural language, the "new AI" has also taken into account the emotional and relational aspects of communication with an emphasis both on understanding and production of nonverbal behavior. This shift in attention in computer science and engineering is reflected in recent developments in psychology and social cognitive neuroscience. This article addresses key challenges which emerge from the goal to equip machines with socio-emotional intelligence and to enable them to interpret subtle nonverbal cues and to respond to social affordances with naturally appearing behavior from both perspectives. In particular, we propose that the creation of credible artificial humans not only defines the ultimate test for our understanding of human communication and social cognition but also provides a unique research tool to improve our knowledge about the underlying psychological processes and neural mechanisms.

Self-Disclosure to AI: The Paradox of Trust and Vulnerability in Human-Machine Interactions

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the paradox of trust and vulnerability in human-machine interactions, inspired by Alexander Reben's BlabDroid project. This project used small, unassuming robots that actively engaged with people, successfully eliciting personal thoughts or secrets from individuals, often more effectively than human counterparts. This phenomenon raises intriguing questions about how trust and self-disclosure operate in interactions with machines, even in their simplest forms. We study the change of trust in technology through analyzing the psychological processes behind such encounters. The analysis applies theories like Social Penetration Theory and Communication Privacy Management Theory to understand the balance between perceived security and the risk of exposure when personal information and secrets are shared with machines or AI. Additionally, we draw on philosophical perspectives, such as posthumanism and phenomenology, to engage with broader questions about trust, privacy, and vulnerability in the digital age. Rapid incorporation of AI into our most private areas challenges us to rethink and redefine our ethical responsibilities.

Abstract:The accelerated path of technological development, particularly at the interface between hardware and biology has been suggested as evidence for future major technological breakthroughs associated to our potential to overcome biological constraints. This includes the potential of becoming immortal, having expanded cognitive capacities thanks to hardware implants or the creation of intelligent machines. Here I argue that several relevant evolutionary and structural constraints might prevent achieving most (if not all) these innovations. Instead, the coming future will bring novelties that will challenge many other aspects of our life and that can be seen as other feasible singularities. One particularly important one has to do with the evolving interactions between humans and non-intelligent robots capable of learning and communication. Here I argue that a long term interaction can lead to a new class of "agent" (the humanbot). The way shared memories get tangled over time will inevitably have important consequences for both sides of the pair, whose identity as separated entities might become blurred and ultimately vanish. Understanding such hybrid systems requires a second-order neuroscience approach while posing serious conceptual challenges, including the definition of consciousness.

Abstract:Innovative technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), deep learning, Machine learning and optogenetics have been considered key components in the contribution to the acceleration of numerous discoveries in life sciences, particularly in the field of neuroscience. With the inherent progress of AI in particular, it is no surprise that 'neuroscience', a complex study of the nervous system could benefit from the endless capabilities that AI has to offer with its magnification of the human mind. Although our minds are capable of extraordinary endeavours, there is a limit as to how much information we may mentally be able to process. Alongside the advancements of AI systems, we may be able to drive neuroscience forward and unlock the secrets of the human brain with one of its applications being the ability to identify neurological problems and detect neurotransmitters. This review therefore discusses the fruitful relationship between AI and neuroscience and its applications to furthering our knowledge in this field.

Abstract:Abstract Evolving technology and human-machine interaction are two major stances that question human centricity as a core dimension for the future placement of human variables and social perspectives inside intelligent systems. The present paper explores present challenges and an up to date research synthesis concerning social sciences dimensions, theories, concepts and implementation with regard to the study of human centred artificial intelligence. The main scope consists of drawing several red lines for future research and theoretical social insights on artificial intelligence at work. Following a scholarly literature insight and several reference works, the study explores major topics of interest analysed so far and proposes new directions for the evaluation of human variables and machine learning at work in an organizational setting. Results showed there is a vital need for expanding research from human centricity point of view on the present matter, where studies are still scarce and heterogenous. Moreover, concept clarification and theoretical explanations are yet to be sufficient in explaining people interactions and management of artificial intelligence at the workplace. In conclusion human empowerment at work through ethical and person oriented intelligent systems in a given organizational context can ensure a fair and efficient development of people’s skills, professional objectives or level of performance while promoting human values, ethical principles and preserving the well-being. The paper presents also several practical implications of social sciences domain on artificial intelligence exploration and a few future directions for research.
