Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) systems leverage solid-state illumination devices to create high-speed communication links. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered for these intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical channels, however, it suffers from high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Moreover, the implementation of linear, power-efficient, high-current, wideband drivers is challenging. In this paper, the concept of spatial summing is developed where wideband, high PAPR OFDM signals are partitioned into many low-PAPR narrowband signals that are transmitted from multiple LEDs. The signals from different LEDs are allowed to sum in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. Spatial optical-OFDM (SO-OFDM) is proposed in which filtered subsets of carriers are emitted by each LED. In addition, low-PAPR optical single-carrier FDMA (OSC-FDMA) is developed where different collections of LEDs act as virtual users in a multiple-access scheme. The different variations of SO-OFDM and OSC-FDMA are compared to conventional DC-biased optical (DCO) OFDM and are shown to achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to LED nonlinearities leading to error rate performance gains at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration of unidirectional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) -wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) -VLC system adopting quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Based on this configuration, we successfully demonstrate a 3x1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM-VLC transmission experiment using three blue phosphor LEDs. The transmission distance can be as long as 140cm. We also demonstrate an 800-Mb/s MISO SCM-WDM VLC transmission experiment based on RGB-LED with 66-cm transmission distance. In the two experiments, pre-equalization and post-equalization both are implemented to compensate for the poor frequency response of LEDs. And the properties of EVM and BER in all channels are measured and analysed.

Abstract:Visible-light communications (VLCs) are energy-efficient communication means and a popular alternative to the radio-frequency technology. VLCs are referred to as free-space optical communication systems which can be built upon the existing lighting infrastructure. Due to the cost-effectiveness concern, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are adopted as the visible-light sources. In this paper, we demonstrate a VLC prototype using white LEDs and pulse position modulation (PPM), which is aimed for short-range communications. Based on the acquired VLC signal waveforms, characteristics related to electronic components, LEDs, and photo diodes (PDs) are studied thoroughly. The non-square shape of received pulses is modeled by new template functions involving rising and setting time intervals. A new PPM demodulator is devised thereupon. Meanwhile, the probability density function of noise is derived using the Edgeworth expansion. As all of the aforementioned aspects are taken into account, the VLC quality-of-service (QoS) in terms of package error rate and throughput is studied in this work. Experiments are taken to justify the theoretical QoS metric and evaluate our proposed new PPM demodulator.

Abstract:Recent developments in wireless digital communication have made Visible Light Communication (VLC) a promising technology. Comparatively speaking, the VLC system used in this task offers better performance and efficiency. In this study, a modified Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (indoor VLC communication model) was proposed. To overcome channel capacity restrictions caused by a constrained LED modulation bandwidth, MIMO VLC systems must meet the high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) criteria needed for SISO channel LED lighting. Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM), Space–Time Block Coded OFDM (STBC-OFDM), and Electro-Optical OFDM (EO-OFDM) are frequently compared and contrasted in wideband technology (Enhanced Optical OFDM). The suggested system, when compared to other systems, increases BER (Bit Error Rate) performance and throughput for all MIMO via SISO VLC communication channel gains that may be available. The suggested approach keeps the standard method's data rate constant while BER is improved by 20 dB and 10–5. EO-OFDM offers better data rates than OFDM, but is less effective than PAPR, according to research on channels with limited bandwidth (peak-to-average power ratio). To assess the SNR throughput of the proposed EO-OFDM scheme in comparison to O-OFDM, OAK-OFDM, and PWM-OFDM in order to get a throughput of 20 Mbit/s. In comparison to MIMO-based O-OFDM, OAK-OFDM, and STBC-OFDM, the suggested EO-OFDM technology runs at speeds faster than 7.6 Mbits/s. This experiment's overall performance is superior to state-of-the-art considering that LEDs are linear and have a constrained dynamic range.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed communication becomes a new area which draws increasing attention. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed VLC system based on Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) for the first time. We change the value of different factors and compare the performance of the system in order to find the effect of different factors. The experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) for an overall 1.2Gb/s 64QAM and 32QAM signal over 40 cm transmission can be under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10 -3 . Meanwhile, we clearly demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of DFT-S OFDM modulation format for the high speed VLC system.

Abstract:In recent times, the need for ubiquitous and assisted wireless integration has increased in improvident proportions due to an inconceivable surge in the amount of wirelessly connected devices and nodes. This has led to a multiplication of consumption of data, thereby generating a capacity crunch on the electromagnetic spectrum. In the past few years, Visible Light Communication (VLC) has become immensely popular with researchers around the world due to its enormous freely available bandwidth and the varied applications that it can support. This experimental paper provides a detailed stepwise understanding of system implementation for VLC using off-the-shelf components. Four phosphor-coated ultra-bright white Light Emitting Diodes (LED) and a silicon Positive Intrinsic Negative (PIN) photodetector are used in the experimental study. The system accomplishes a data rate of up to 2 Mb/s over a distance of one meter by employing On–Off Keying (OOK) modulation. The transmitted and received optical powers are documented and analyzed using Microsoft® Excel. The paper has made an effort to list down the need, advantages, procurement websites, and detailed procedures for smooth implementation of the VLC system with minimum financial aid.

Abstract:Next-generation visible light communication (VLC) is envisioned to evolve into a high-speed and multi-user system. In this work, a 75-µm single layer quantum dot (QD) micro-LED was fabricated, packaged and used to experimentally demonstrate a 3-meter QAM-OFDMA VLC system affording multiple users with a 1.06-GHz modulation bandwidth. The OFDMA system realized data rates of 1.2 Gbps and 750 Mbps with a BER of 0 and 3.6×10−3 for two independent users with a 1:1 bandwidth ratio, respectively. Additional sub-carrier allocation strategies and scenarios of 2∼6 users have been further evaluated, and all proposed strategies reach the sum-rate of beyond 1.41 Gbps while satisfying the forward error correction (FEC) criteria.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely studied and adopted in visible-light communication (VLC) systems because of its high spectral efficiency and low-complexity implementation. However, OFDM-based VLC systems suffer from a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), along with the nonlinear transfer characteristics of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this paper, a subcarrier grouping scheme for an OFDM-based VLC system is proposed. This scheme exploits the property that one LED lamp usually contains multiple independent LED chips. In the proposed scheme, all OFDM signal subcarriers are divided into groups, and each group is transmitted by an individual LED chip while the same receiver structure is maintained. The PAPR is reduced significantly because only some of the subcarriers are located on each LED chip. Hence, the achievable input power can be increased, leading to a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a lower bit error rate (BER). Simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the BER performance can be improved by over two orders of magnitude. Moreover, an adaptive switching mechanism is also proposed in this paper, in which a subcarrier grouping scheme is employed adaptively when the required input power is high. Simulation results validate that the proposed mechanism can enhance system robustness significantly.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) has the advantage of high spectral efficiency due to non-requirement of cyclic prefix (CP) and guard band. However, the high direct current (DC) used in OFDM/OQAM is power inefficient for visible light communication (VLC). In this letter, an enhanced OFDM/OQAM (EO-OFDM/OQAM) scheme is proposed for VLC, which is inspired by the idea of the pulse-amplitude-modulation based hybrid optical OFDM (PHO-OFDM) scheme. In this system, the half of subcarriers of the normal branch carry useful data while the remaining subcarriers are selected to carry negative clipping noise instead of useful data for improving the power efficiency, and a flexible power allocation method is introduced. The simulation results show that compared with the PHO-OFDM, the proposed scheme has a better bit error rate (BER) performance under the same average bit rate without additional operations of interference regeneration and cancellation.

Abstract:Achieving large system capacity is a challenge due to the narrow modulation bandwidth of the white light- emitting diode (LED) in visible light communication. The system capacity can be improved by the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique which can reuse power. A NOMA-DCO-OFDM system which is a combination of NOMA technology and direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) is proposed. Furthermore, a modeling method for VLC multipath channel is proposed based on the recursive method when a single LED is used. The signal to interference and noise ratio of users is derived when the clipping noise is considered. We also study the relationship among average sum rate of system, half power semi-angles of LED, field of views (FOV) of photoelectric detector and power distribution factor with methods of fractional order power allocation, gain ratio power allocation and static power allocation. The simulation results indicate that the average sum rate of system changes with the changing of half power semi-angles of LED, field of views (FOV) of photoelectric detector and power distribution factor, and the maximum average sum rate can be achieved when we optimize the half power semi-angles, FOV and power distribution factor.

Abstract:White light-emitting diode (LED) consisting of red, green, blue, and amber chips (RGBA-LED) has recently been adopted as transmitter in visible light communication (VLC) systems. In the R-OFDM, the signal is adjusted by separation and biasing after clipping (BAC) operations for transmitting in RGBA-LED. Then, the biasing factor of BAC is derived according to the color mix ratio (CMR) of RGBA-LED. At the receiver, We develop a direct detection algorithm to recover the original data, and analyze its the theoretical bit error rate (BER). Furthermore, a lower bound of the BER is analyzed under high clipping ratio (CR) by using SNR upper bound. Finally, simulation results confirm our theoretical analysis and verify that R-OFDM outperforms the ACO-OFDM in term of BER.

Abstract:This paper proposes a reshaped orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (R-OFDM) scheme for intensity modulation/direct detection visible light communication (VLC) systems, where an LED consisting of red, green, blue, and amber chips (RGBA-LED) is adopted as the transmitter. In R-OFDM, the signal is adjusted by signal separation and biasing after clipping (BAC)/scaling before clipping (SBC) operations for transmitting in the RGBA-LED. We optimize both biasing and scaling factors for the BAC and SBC operations, respectively. Correspondingly, a direct detection algorithm is developed for data recovery at receiver. Theoretical bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed R-OFDM scheme is further analyzed. Specifically for the multicolor LED transmission, a low complexity parallel interference cancellation algorithm is also proposed for eliminating the interference caused by cross-talk in multicolor VLC channels. Numerical results over practical optical channels are presented to validate the advantage of the proposed R-OFDM scheme. It is revealed that the R-OFDM achieves noticeable performance gain in term of BER than the conventional Flip-OFDM and ACO-OFDM.

Abstract:We demonstrate a visible light communication system based on DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing(DCO-OFDM) and achieve a bit rate of 481 Mb/s at a communication distance of 65 cm by employing single 1 W commercial phosphorescent light-emitting diode(LED). The average bit error rate of the received data is 2.3×10-3, which is below the forward error correction limit, 3.8×10-3. The effect of signal clipping in DCO-OFDM system is studied and resource allocation algorithms are utilized. At least 13% capacity improvement can be obtained by suitable signal clipping and resource allocation.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is a kind of high-efficiency wireless communication technology. As one of the key issues in VLC, the modulation bandwidth of light-conversion materials based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has gained considerable attention in recent years. However, few people focus on theoretical analyses of the light-conversion process during modulation, which show significant influence on the modulation bandwidth of a white LED. In this work, we proposed low-pass filter based models of light-conversion materials of YAG:Ce phosphor and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots, to build the relationship between fluorescence lifetime of these light-conversion materials and their modulation bandwidth. Furthermore, the modulation bandwidth of light source with polychromatic light was obtained and analyzed based on the proposed model. The experimental results of the modulation bandwidth showed a highly consistency with the results from simulation models. These analyses were believed to help realizing white-light illumination with high bandwidth. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the modulation mechanisms of light-conversion materials in VLC have been comprehensively discussed in literature.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is an advanced, highly developed optical wireless communication (OWC) technology that can simultaneously provide lighting and high-speed wireless data transmission. A VLC system has several key advantages: ultra-high data rate, secure communication channels, and a lack of interference from electromagnetic (EM) waves, which enable a wide range of applications. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been considered the optimal choice for VLC systems since they can provide excellent illumination performance. However, the quantum confinement Stark effect (QCSE), crystal orientation, carrier lifetime, and recombination factor will influence the modulation bandwidth, and the transmission performance is severely limited. To solve the insufficient modulation bandwidth, micro-LEDs (μ-LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) are considered as new ideal light sources. Additionally, the development of modulation technology has dramatically increased the transmission capacity of the system. The performance of the VLC system is briefly discussed in this review article, as well as some of its prospective applications in the realms of the industrial Internet of Things (IoT), vehicle communications, and underwater wireless network applications.

Abstract:We are seeing a growing use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) in a range of applications including lighting, TV and backlight board screen, display etc. In comparison with the traditional incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs offer long life-space, much higher energy efficiency, high performance cost ratio and above all very fast switching capability. LED based Visible Light Communications (VLC) is an emerging field of optical communications that focuses on the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. Depending on the transmission distance, we can divide the whole optical network into two categories, long haul and short haul. Visible light communication can be a promising candidate for short haul applications. In this paper, we outline the configuration of VLC, its unique benefits, and describe the state of the art research contributions consisting of advanced modulation formats including adaptive bit loading OFDM, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and single carrier Nyquist, linear equalization and nonlinear distortion mitigation based on machine learning, quasi-balanced coding and phase-shifted Manchester coding. These enabling technologies can support VLC up to 10Gb/s class free space transmission.
