Abstract:Recently introduced surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) makes it possible to fabricate high-Q-factor microresonators and other photonic microdevices by dramatically small deformation of the optical fiber surface. To become a practical and robust technology, the SNAP platform requires methods enabling reproducible modification of the optical fiber radius at nanoscale. In this Letter, we demonstrate superaccurate fabrication of high-Q-factor microresonators by nanoscale modification of the optical fiber radius and refractive index using CO2 laser and UV excimer laser beam exposures. The achieved fabrication accuracy is better than 2 Å in variation of the effective fiber radius.

Abstract:Fabricating a surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) microresonator with a specific profile is a challenging and important issue since its advent. We propose a powerful approach for the flexible fabrication of the SNAP structures with arbitrary profiles by a femtosecond laser. Our method is to design the profile of the length distribution of the inscribed lines to match the profile of the required SNAP microresonator, and to combine it with other fabrication parameters to precisely control the radius variation of the SNAP structure. In experiments, we demonstrate the design and fabrication of the SNAP structures with the parabolic, semi-parabolic, and bat profiles. The developed approach is expected to be universal for the fabrication of complex high Q-factor SNAP structures, which lays the groundwork for exploring the versatile performances of the SNAP devices.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate series of identical two, three, and five coupled high Q-factor Surface Nanoscale Axial Photonics (SNAP) microresonators formed by periodic nanoscale variation of the optical fiber radius. These microresonators are fabricated with a 100 \mum period along an 18 \mum radius optical fiber. The axial FWHM of these microresonators is 80 \mum and their Q-factor exceeds 107. In addition, we demonstrate a SNAP microresonator with the axial FWHM as small as 30 \mum and the axial FWHM of the fundamental mode as small as 10 \mum. These results may potentially enable the dense integration of record low loss coupled photonic microdevices on the optical fiber platform.

Abstract:The fabrication of surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) microresonators, utilizing the approach of electric arc discharge (EAD), is accomplished, achieving a precision at the angstrom level. This paper thoroughly investigates the effects that discharge intensity and discharge duration have on SNAP microresonators, respectively, through the manipulation of relevant discharge parameters. The results indicate that, within a specified range of discharge intensity, a linear relationship is observed between the effective radius variation (ERV) and the discharge intensity, characterized by a slope of 0.325 nm/intensity unit. As the discharge duration is extended, the ERV gradually increases, eventually reaching a saturation value, which is inherently determined by the discharge intensity. Additionally, as the discharge intensity (or time) continues to increase, a “convex–concave–convex” shape is observed on the fiber, providing a method for fabricating bat microresonators. These discoveries derived from our study contribute toward providing a strong foundation for the progressive enhancement and refinement of EAD-based SNAP fabrication techniques.

Abstract:Surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) microresonators, which are fabricated by nanoscale effective radius variation (ERV) of the optical fiber with subangstrom precision, can be potentially used as miniature classical and quantum signal processors, frequency comb generators, and ultraprecise microfluidic and environmental optical sensors. Many of these applications require the introduction of nanoscale ERV with a large contrast α, which is defined as the maximum shift of the fiber cutoff wavelength introduced per unit length of the fiber axis. The previously developed fabrication methods of SNAP structures, which used focused CO<sub>2</sub> and femtosecond laser beams, achieved α∼0.02 nm/μm. Here we develop a new, to the best of our knowledge, fabrication method of SNAP microresonators with a femtosecond laser, which allows us to demonstrate a 50-fold improvement of previous results and achieve α∼1 nm/μm. Furthermore, our fabrication method enables the introduction of ERV that is several times larger than the maximum ERV demonstrated previously. As an example, we fabricate a rectangular SNAP resonator and investigate its group delay characteristics. Our experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical simulations. Overall, the developed approach allows us to reduce the axial scale of SNAP structures by an order of magnitude.

Abstract:Surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) microresonators with nanoscale effective radius variations (ERVs) along the optical fiber axis can be fabricated by inscribing axially oriented lines inside the fiber with a femtosecond laser. Here, we propose the multi-dimensional fabrication parameter system for the femtosecond laser fabrication of SNAP devices and systematically investigate the relationships between the introduced ERV and the multidimensionally controllable fabrication parameters. Specifically, both the qualitative and quantitative processing principles are revealed. As a proof-of-principle, by multidimensionally optimizing the fabrication parameters, we realize a SNAP microresonator with the characteristics of both small axial size and maximal ERV. The achieved ERV is almost 5 times larger than the ERV achieved with the previous unoptimized method. Our work promotes the fs laser inscription technology to be a flexible and versatile approach for fabricating the SNAP devices with ultra-high precision, ultra-low loss and high robustness.

Abstract:Surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) microresonators with nanoscale effective radius variation (ERV) along optical fiber axis can be fabricated by inscribing axially oriented lines inside the fiber with a femtosecond laser. The optimization of variable parameters in the femtosecond laser inscription technique is of great significance for flexible and ultra-high precision control of ERV, which is vital to the performance of SNAP devices. Here, we present the first systematical investigation on the relationships between the various controllable fabrication parameters and the introduced ERV of the SNAP microresonators. Specifically, both the qualitative and quantitative processing principles were revealed. As a proof-of-principle, by comprehensively optimizing the fabrication parameters, we realized a SNAP microresonator with the characteristics of both small axial size and maximal ERV, which is almost impossible to realize with other SNAP fabrication techniques. Our work promotes the fs laser inscription technology to be a flexible and versatile approach for fabricating the SNAP devices with ultra-high precision, ultra-low loss and high robustness.

Abstract:We introduce multiple series of uncoupled and coupled surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) microresonators along the 30 micron diameter germanium-doped photosensitive silica optical fiber and demonstrate their permanent trimming and temporary tuning with a CO2 laser and a wire heater. Hydrogen loading allows us to increase the introduced variation of the effective fiber radius by an order of magnitude compared to the unloaded case, i.e., to around 5 nm. It is demonstrated that the CO2 laser annealing of the fabricated microresonator chain can be used to modify the fiber radius variation. Depending on the CO2 laser beam power, the microresonator effective radius variation can be increased in depth up to the factor of two or completely erased. In addition, we demonstrate temporary tuning of a microresonator chain with a wire heater.

Abstract:The construction of multilayered arched nanobridges and nanocantilever structures from silver nanowires using a photothermal-induced nanobonding technique is reported by Qiang Li and co-workers in article number 1800807. The multilayered arch nanobridges are used as short-circuit-free multipronged electronic connections in nanoelectronic devices. Both types of nanostructure also exhibit excellent mechanical strength and show potential for use in biological sensors.

Abstract:We demonstrated the subangstrom precise correction of surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) micro-resonators by the femtosecond (fs) laser postprocessing technique for the first time. The internal stress can be induced by fs laser inscriptions in the fiber, causing nanoscale effective radius variation (ERV). However, the obtained ultraprecise fabrication usually undergoes multiple tries. Here, we propose a novel postprocessing technique based on the fs laser that significantly reduces the ERV errors and improves the fabrication precision without iterative corrections. The postexposure process is achieved at the original exposure locations using lower pulse energy than that in the initial fabrication process. The results show that the ERV is nearly proportional to the pulse energy of the postexposure process. The slope of the ERV versus the pulse energy is 0.07 Å/nJ. The maximum of the postprocessed ERV can reach 8.0 Å. The repeatability was experimentally verified by accomplishing the correction on three SNAP microresonators with the precision of 0.75 Å. The developed fabrication technique with fs laser enables SNAP microresonators with new breakthrough applications for optomechanics and filters.
Configurable SNAP microresonators induced by axial pre-strain-assisted CO2 laser exposure

Abstract:Flexible engineering of the complex shapes of the surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) bottle microresonators (SBMs) is challenging for future nanophotonic technology applications. Here, we experimentally propose a powerful approach for the one-step fabrication of SBMs with simultaneous negative and positive radius variations, exhibiting a distinctive "bump-well-bump" profile. It is executed by utilizing two focused and symmetrical CO2 laser beams exposed on the fiber surface for only several hundred milliseconds. The spectral characteristics of different eigenmodes are analyzed, providing deep insights into the complex physical processes during the CO2 laser exposure. The shapes of the SBMs can be flexibly adjusted by the exposure time, laser power, and applied pre-strains. As a proof of this technique, the developed approach enables the efficient production of a bat SBM, ensuring a uniform field amplitude of the bat mode over the length exceeding 120 µm with 7% deviation. Our proposed technique provides a powerful technique for the efficient fabrication of SBMs with predetermined shapes, laying the groundwork for its applications on microscale optical signal processing, quantum computing, and so on.

Abstract:If the originally flat bottom of a wide quantum well with multiple eigenstates is periodically modulated, its eigenvalues rearrange into denser groups separated by wider gaps. We show that this effect, if implemented in an elongated bottle microresonator (also called a SNAP microresonator) allows to design microwave photonic tunable filters with an outstanding performance.

Considering the ZnO is a piezoelectric and semiconductive materials, its electric properties change when deformed. Thus technique has potential applications in tunable electronics, optoelectronics, and piezotronics.

Microresonator devices lithographically introduced at the optical fiber surface

Abstract:We present a simple lithographic method for fabrication of microresonator devices at the optical fiber surface. First, we undress the predetermined surface areas of a fiber segment from the polymer coating with a focused CO2 laser beam. Next, using the remaining coating as a mask, we etch the fiber in a hydrofluoric acid solution. Finally, we completely undress the fiber segment from coating to create a chain of silica bottle microresonators with nanoscale radius variation (SNAP microresonators). We demonstrate the developed method by fabrication of a chain of five 1 mm long and 30 nm high microresonators at the surface of a 125 micron diameter optical fiber and a single 0.5 mm long and 291 nm high microresonator at the surface of a 38 micron diameter fiber. As another application, we fabricate a rectangular 5 mm long SNAP microresonator at the surface of a 38 micron diameter fiber and investigate its performance as a miniature delay line. The propagation of a 100 ps pulse with 1 ns delay, 0.035c velocity, and negligible dispersion is demonstrated. In contrast to the previously developed approaches in SNAP technology, the developed method allows the introduction of much larger fiber radius variation ranging from nanoscale to microscale.

Abstract:The recent development of the superlattice nanowire pattern transfer (SNAP) technique allows for the fabrication of arrays of nanowires at a diameter, pitch, aspect ratio, and regularity beyond competing approaches. Here, we report the fabrication of conducting Si nanowire arrays with wire widths and pitches of 10-20 nm and 40-50 nm, respectively, and resistivity values comparable to the bulk through the selection of appropriate silicon-on-insulator substrates, careful reactive-ion etching, and spin-on glass doping. These results promise the realization of interesting nano-electronic circuits and devices, including chemical and biological sensors, nano-scale mosaics for molecular electronics, and ultra-dense field-effect transistor (FET) arrays.

Abstract:Abstract Circuit-integrated electromagnets are fundamental building blocks for on-chip signal transduction, modulation, and tunability, with specific applications in environmental and biomedical micromagnetometry. A primary challenge for improving performance is pushing quality limitations while minimizing size and fabrication complexity and retaining spatial capabilities. Recent efforts have exploited highly involved three-dimensional synthesis, advanced insulation, and exotic material compositions. Here, we present a rapid nanofabrication process that employs electron beam dose control for high-turn-density diamond-embedded flat spiral coils; these coils achieve efficient on-chip electromagnetic-to-optical signal conversion. Our fabrication process relies on fast 12.3 s direct writing on standard poly(methyl methacrylate) as a basis for the metal lift-off process. Prototypes with 70 micrometer overall diameters and 49–470 nm interturn spacings with corresponding inductances of 12.3–12.8 nH are developed. We utilize optical micromagnetometry to demonstrate that magnetic field generation at the center of the structure effectively correlates with finite element modeling predictions. Further designs based on our process can be integrated with photolithography to broadly enable optical magnetic sensing and spin-based computation.

Abstract:The development of broadband emissive micro/nanoscale structures has enabled unprecedented opportunities to innovate multifunctional devices with applications in lighting, display, sensing, biomedical, photovoltaics, and optical communication. Realization of these micro/nanostructures require multi-step processing, and depends on sophisticated, complex, time-consuming, expensive, and conventional nanofabrication techniques such as mask-based photolithography, electron beam lithography, reactive ion etching. Precise control over z-axis features with a subwavelength resolution for the fabrication of 3D features is a challenge using these methods. Thus, the traditional methods often fall short of meeting these requirements simultaneously. Fabrication of emissive structures demand techniques that offer material compatibility, high resolution, and structural complexity. Here, we report single-step fabrication of 1D, 2D, and 3D broadband emissive micro/nanostructures using two-photon lithography (TPL). The broadband emissive resin used for fabricating these structures is made by combining synthesized functionalized carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with a commercially available acrylate-based resin. The resulting structures demonstrate excellent broadband emissive properties in the visible range under UV-Vis excitation.We have observed consistent emission across the fabricated structures along with good thermal and optical stability. Furthermore, we can tune the emission properties of the micro/nanostructures by modifying the functionalization/doping of the quantum dots. These micro/nanostructures have the potential to be used as fundamental components in photonics, particularly in the fields of biophotonics, sensing, and optoelectronics, and could drive new innovations in these areas.
