Abstract:<p>Extracting lithium resources efficiently from brine at a low cost is becoming a key technology for addressing energy and environmental issues. The electrochemical extraction method has the advantages of high selectivity, low consumption, and environmental friendliness. Two advances are proposed in this work: first, a layered-spinel heterostructure lithium-rich material (LSNCM) was designed as a Li-insertion electrode to improve the diffusion of lithium ions in the crystal lattice and the stability of the layered structure by destroying the long-range order of the Mn Jahn-Teller distortion inside the particles. The high capacity, good cyclic stability, and rate performance were verified by ex-situ XRD, SEM, and electrochemical results. Second, instead of using Ag, Pt, or active carbon (AC) electrodes with a high cost or low adsorption efficiency, nanocrystalline bismuth (ncBi) was prepared as selective Cl- storage electrode with a conversion mechanism. The excellent chlorine storage capacity of the ncBi electrode was verified by a comparison of several key indexes during the cyclic lithium extraction process in LSNCM//ncBi and LSNCM//AC batteries. The lithium extraction recovery efficiency was as high as 99%. The lithium extraction results in simulated brine indicated that the LSNCM//ncBi desalination battery is a feasible and promising method for lithium extraction.</p>
