Abstract:The combination of ferrite and carbon materials with core-shell nanostructures has attracted tremendous interest in microwave absorption field. Herein, Fe/Fe3C-C core-shell nanoparticles with diameters of 10–70 nm were synthesized by one-step metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The nanocores of the nanoparticles can be tailored from Fe3C, to Fe3C/Fe, and then Fe by simply changing the reaction temperature. The Fe/Fe3C-C core-shell nanoparticles exhibited an optimal reflection loss (RL) value of −58.5 dB and effective absorption bandwidth (frequency range for RL <  − 10 dB) of 6.2 GHz at a low thickness of 2.0 mm. The microwave absorption performances of the as-synthesized Fe/Fe3C-C core-shell composites could be easily tuned by the phase composition of nanocores. The achieved results demonstrated that the as-synthesized Fe/Fe3C-C core-shell nanoparticles have considerable potential as an effective microwave absorber with tunable absorption performance.

Abstract:Carbonaceous-magnetic composites are the most appealing candidates for electromagnetic wave absorption, and creating hollow interiors and nanopores in the composites is commonly recognized as an essential strategy to reinforce their overall performances. Herein, we propose a spatial confinement strategy mediated by Co-2(OH)(2)CO3 nanosheet assemblies for achieving highly dispersed Co nanoparticles into hollow porous N-doped carbon shells (HP-Co@NCS). Systematic multi-technique characterizations indicate that the Co-2(OH)(2)CO3 nanosheet assemblies simultaneously play a trifunctional role during the synthesis, including Co source, template of the hollow interior cavities, and micro-/mesopore porogen. The chemical composition can be modulated by simply varying the ratio of Co-2(OH)(2)CO3 and carbon source (dopamine). The optimized HP-Co@NCS absorber exhibits a well-defined hollow structure and unprecedented high porosity (specific surface area of 742 m2 g-1) even with a high metallic Co content of 35.8 wt%. These profitable structural characteristics can facilitate incident EM waves penetrating the absorber's interior and promoting multiple reflections and scattering. Therefore, the HP-Co@NCS absorber exhibits efficient microwave absorption ability with a minimum reflection loss of-39.0 dB at a thin thickness of 2.5 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth up to 5.5 GHz (12.5 18.0 GHz) at a thin thickness of 2.0 mm. Construction of core-shell ZnO@ZnO/FeNi microrods with improved impedance matching and electromagnetic wave absorption performance

Abstract:Functional core-shell heterostructure, which can integrate the characteristics of multiple components to achieve synergistic effects, have been widely explored in electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials. In this work, core-shell ZnO@ZnO/FeNi microrods (MRs) derived from ZnO@ZnFeNi hydroxide (ZnFeNi OH) are prepared by a simple hydrothermal reaction and subsequent pyrolysis process. The introduction of FeNi alloy helps to optimize the impedance matching of ZnO, thus improving the EMW absorption performance. The different impedance matching properties of core-shell ZnO@ZnO/FeNi MRs are realized by adjusting the ZnO/FeNi shell thickness by changing the hydrothermal reaction time. When the hydrothermal time is 10 h, the core-shell ZnO@ZnO/FeNi MRs supplies the optimal EMW absorption performance with the minimum reflection loss of −53.7 dB and the widest absorption bandwidth of 5.3 GHz at a filler content of 33%. The synergistic effect of ZnO–FeNi interfacial polarization and the strong dielectric-magnetic loss are responsible for its superior EMW absorption performance. This work provides a valuable strategy for constructing core-shell dielectric@ magnetic composites to obtained high efficiency absorber.

Abstract:Reasonable structure and composition are essential for electromagnetic wave absorption (EMW). Herein, ZnO hollow spheres were prepared with carbon spheres as templates and then synthesized ZnO/ZnCo2O4 composites by the solvothermal method and annealing treatment. The flower-like ZnCo2O4 material was produced by self-assembly of ZnCo2O4 nanosheets. The absorbing material with the complex structure has multiple scattering and reflection, conduction loss, resonance, and eddy current loss characteristics. Furthermore, the addition of ZnO hollow spheres has a significant impact on electromagnetic parameters and absorption properties. As a result, the addition of ZnO hollow spheres can greatly enhance the complex permittivity of the ZnO/ZnCo2O4 composites and obtain excellent EMW absorbing properties. It is worth noting that ZnO/ZnCo2O4 composites show the best EMW absorption properties when the ZnO hollow spheres were added up to 5 mg. The minimum reflection loss is-55.42 dB and a matching thickness of 1.99 mm while the maximum effective absorption bandwidth can also reach 7.44 GHz with a matching thickness of 2.4 mm. Our research can prove that the structure and composition have a significant influence on the properties of the absorbing material, which provides ideas for the development of absorbing materials with high-performance. Abstract:It is widely accepted that building a core shell structure is an effective way to modify impedance matching behavior and induce interfacial polarization relaxtion. In this work, we adopted a novel impregnation process and subsequent calcination treatment to construct Fe3O4 nanocrystals/mesoporous carbon hollow spheres (MCHS) core shell hybrids. From the perspective of microwave absorption, MCHS possess favorable dielectric loss ability and lightweight features. Fe3O4 could produce magnetic loss and regulate impedance matching characteristics. Besides, hollow voids and mesopores facilitate microwave absorption, while multiple interfacial polarization induced between Fe3O4 nanocrystals and MCHS contributes to microwave attenuation. Combining these advantages, a maximum reflection loss value of -60.2 dB at 15.5 GHz and a broad effective bandwidth of 5.7 GHz can be achieved for the as-prepared sample at a thickness of 2.3 mm. Furthermore, the excellent microwave absorption properties with a ultrawide bandwidth of 8.0 GHz (10.0-18.0 GHz) at 2.6 mm of thickness was achieved. Therefore, the as-prepared hybrids can act as a lightweight and broadband microwave absorber; moreover, the corresponding method could be a sustainable and low-cost route for designing multicore shell hybrids.
Hollow porous magnetic/magnetic heterostructured CoFe/defective spinel microspheres template-free synthesis and effective modulation of microwave absorption performance

Abstract:To create a spinel ferrite with excellent performance for electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption in the low frequency range of 4–6 GHz, compositions based on Co0.75Zn0.125Fe0.125Fe2O4 (CZF–1) and Co0.5Zn0.25Fe0.25Fe2O4 (CZF–2) with multiple elements substituted for A sites were synthesized by using solvothermal method. Hollow porous magnetic/magnetic heterostructure microspheres (HHMs) of CZF–A1 and CZF–A2 with multiple interfaces were prepared by hydrogen–thermal reduction of CZF–1 and CZF–2, and their unique structure and EM absorption properties were investigated in detail. The widest effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of CZF–A1 and CZF–A2 was 4.1 GHz (13.6–17.7 GHz) and 3.7 GHz (8.0–11.7 GHz) for a corresponding thickness of 1.4 mm and 2.0 mm, respectively. In addition, the minimum reflection loss (R.L min) of CZF–A1 and CZF–A2 reached –49.1 dB (at f m = 13.4 GHz) and –45.0 dB (at f m = 4.2 GHz) at a thicknesses of 1.6 mm and 3.7 mm, respectively. More specifically, in the low frequency region of 4–6 GHz, CZF–A1 and CZF–A2 exhibited excellent EM wave absorption due to the effective regulation of their natural resonance frequency. The EM wave absorption frequency band of CZF–A1 and CZF–A2 samples was able to completely cover the 4–6 GHz frequency region for at coating thickness of CZF–A1 and CZF–A2 was only 3.5 mm and 3.3 mm respectively, and their R.Lmin reached –36.5 dB and –22.6 dB. Moreover, the absorption mechanisms of CZF–A1 and CZF–A2 including magnetic resonance, eddy current loss, interfacial polarization and dipole polarization were also investigated in detail. This research provides new insights and guidance for the development of spinel ferrite-based EM absorbers for high efficiency EM wave absorption in the low frequency (4–6 GHz) region.

Rational Design of Yolk Core-Shell Structure MnO-Co@C Nanospheres for High-Performance Microwave Absorption

Abstract:MnO-Co@C nanospheres were fabricated by in situ polymerizing and high-temperature carbonizing processes. This unique synthesis method does not require any template or reducing gas. The synthesized multicore-shell structure has a shell of about 500 nm and multiple nuclei of several tens of nanometers. Subsequently, extensive experiments were conducted to adjust the material composition of the nanospheres by adjusting the amount of resorcinol and formaldehyde. The results showed that the obtained material performed best when resorcinol and formaldehyde were added to 0.2 g MnCo2O4 at 0.3 g and 0.42 mL, respectively. The efficient absorption bandwidth (EAB) value reaches 3.3 GHz when the absorber thickness is 3 mm. The reflection loss (RL) is up to −23.8 dB when the frequency is at 8.6 GHz. The unique yolk core-shell structure gives the material a heterogeneous interface, and the enhanced interfacial polarization loss causes the enhanced dielectric loss. The carbon layer with microporosity also causes conduction loss and multiple reflections. The composite structure formed by metallic Co, MnO, and carbon has better impedance matching and improved microwave absorption capability.

Abstract:Regulating the composition and microstructure of nanomaterials is a major challenge in the development of high-performance materials for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. This paper introduces a new lightweight EMW-absorbing material Co@N/C with a yolk–shell structure and compositions of ferromagnetic metal and carbon materials. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of the as-designed Co@N/C nanospheres with a filler loading of 25 wt% reaches −67.68 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth of a 1.9 mm thickness is 5.3 GHz. The exceptional absorption performance of the EMW absorption is primarily achieved through the synergistic effect between the Co–carbonaceous material and the yolk–shell structure, which optimizes the impedance matching. The polarization loss, conductivity loss, magnetic loss, and multiple scattering mainly contribute to the excellent EMW-absorption ability of the materials. The proposed method for regulating the structure and morphology of Co@N/C can efficiently construct high-performance EMW absorbers.

Abstract:The derivatives of metal–organic frameworks have been proven to be ideal candidates for microwave absorption due to their ability to form diverse microstructures of metals/heteroatom doped-carbon composites. In this study, we synthesized three types of zinc oxide (ZnO)@ZIF-8 with varying ZIF-8 shell thicknesses using ZnO colloidal spheres as sacrificial templates. Subsequently, we investigated the microwave absorption properties of a series of non-magnetic ZnO/N-doped carbon nanospheres pyrolyzed by ZnO@ZIF-8 at different temperatures. Remarkably, the non-magnetic samples (30 wt% filler loading) with a hollow structure pyrolyzed at 800 °C exhibited a broad effective absorption band exceeding 6 GHz. The excellent microwave absorbing performance of the samples pyrolyzed at 800 °C can be attributed to the reduction of the ZnO core to Zn 0 , anchoring it in the graphitized N-carbon layer, and the formation of an inner hollow cavity that enhances impedance matching. Therefore, this research not only provides an array of excellent dielectric-type microwave absorbing materials but also presents a novel strategy for developing lightweight and high-performance non-magnetic carbon-based microwave absorbing materials.

Abstract:It is well-known that suitable optimization of electromagnetic parameters is a feature to achieve outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption performances (EMWAPs). Accordingly, an effective way to develop high-performance microwave absorbers is to construct dielectric-magnetic core/shell structure nanocomposites with a controllable microstructure and composition parameters. Herein, we propose a simple route to synthesize core/shell structure nanocomposites consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the core and magnetic nanoparticles as the shellviaa one-step hydrothermal method. By adjusting the experimental parameters, core/shell structure CNTs/Co(x)Fe(3-x)O(4)nanocomposites with different morphologies, contents of CNTs, Co : Fe molar ratios and types of CNTs were selectively synthesized. Also, the electromagnetic properties and EMWAPs of the obtained samples were highly dependent on their microstructure and composition parameters. Thus, by optimizing these parameters, the designed nanocomposites simultaneously exhibited very small values of minimum reflection loss and broad absorption bandwidth with very thin matching thicknesses. Additionally, the outstanding comprehensive EMWAPs of samples were proven to be attributed to their improved impedance matching, attenuation loss characteristics, dielectric loss abilities and excellent synergetic effect. Generally, considering the simple process, environment-friendly, low cost, controllable production and high stability of the nanocomposites, our findings provide an effective way to optimize electromagnetic properties and design high-performance microwave absorbers.
Hollow Fe 3 O 4 /Fe@C nanocubes for broadband microwave absorption spanning low- and high-frequency bands

Abstract:Rationally constructing hollow structures with heterogeneous interface is usually an effective strategy to regulate the electromagnetic response behavior for lightweight and strong absorption, but achieving low-frequency and broadband absorption is a major challenge. This work adopts a novel Fe(II)/Fe(III) ions regulation strategy to design and synthesize hollow Fe(OH) X (x = 2, 3) nanocubes, which addresses the disadvantages of time-consuming or using etchant. Subsequently, a unique hollow Fe 3 O 4 /Fe@C nanoboxes with adjustable magnetic composition and uniformly coated shell have been successfully synthesized by in-situ carbonization with the assistance of phenolic resin and hydrogen thermal reduction. Notably, the different magnetic components induce the magnetic coupling assembly and play a crucial role in determining its electromagnetic parameters, whereas Fe 3 O 4 contributes to more dipole polarization and stronger low-frequency response characteristics. For Fe 3 O 4 @C hollow nanoboxes, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) is as low as –119.9 dB at 2.3 mm, and extremely wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 11.4 GHz is achieved spanning low-frequency band of 2.8 ∼ 7.2 GHz and high-frequency band of 11.0 ∼ 18 GHz at 5.0 mm. Surprisingly, the Fe 3 O 4 @C also has satisfactory EAB 20 (RL< –20 dB) reaching 7.1 GHz (14.9 ∼ 18 GHz) at a thin thickness of 1.8 mm. The RL min of other hollow nanoboxes is also below –30 dB, and the EAB is greater than 9 GHz. This study provides a competitive candidate for efficient microwave absorption in complex frequency bands, especially low-frequency bands.

Abstract:A facile method for the preparation of microwave absorbers with low density, high microwave absorptivity, and broad band is of paramount importance to the progress in practical application. Herein, commonly-used metal organic frameworks (MOFs) prepared just by mechanical stirring in methanol at room temperature were chosen as sacrificial templates to synthesize porous carbon composites with tunable dielectric and magnetic properties. With the replacement of Co atoms on the surface of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) by Zn atoms, a Co-doped porous carbon composite with a low-dielectric amorphous carbon /Zn shell was constructed after annealing, leading to excellent impedance matching condition. Consequently, the as-obtained composite (Co/C@C-800) shows marvelous microwave absorption properties with an absorption capacity of 43.97 dB and a corresponding effective absorption bandwidth of 4.1 GHz, far exceeding that of the traditional porous carbon and composites directly derived from ZIF-67. The results provide a convenient way to modify MOFs for enhanced microwave absorption materials from the synergy of dielectric and magnetic losses.
Microwave absorption enhancement of e-Fe3O4@C microspheres by core surface modification

Abstract:Magnetic particles can be combined with carbon materials to prepare core-shell microwave absorbers and the proper core/shell weight ratio yields the optimal absorption effects. However, few studies have focused on the influence of core surface modification on the microwave absorption performance. In this work, e-Fe3O4@C composite microspheres are synthesized by surface etching of core Fe3O4 microspheres in HCl followed by polymerization/carbonization. Core surface modification improves the microwave absorption capability of the e-Fe3O4@C microsphere films. The minimal reflection loss (RLmin) is -54.38 dB at 12.4 GHz for a film thickness of 2.6 mm and the maximum effective bandwidth is extended to 4.1 GHz (3 mm). Etching of the Fe3O4 core surface increases the interfacial contact area consequently enhancing interface polarization and defects created by surface etching produce additional dipole polarization to further increase the dielectric loss. The underlying mechanism is investigated and described. The results reveal a novel and effective strategy to enhance the properties of core-shell microwave absorption materials. Abstract:Rationally engineering on nanostructure of electromagnetic absorbers provides massive potential for eliminating the pollution caused by electromagnetic radiation. In this work, a series of core-shell Co@C nanotubes were produced via facile pyrolysis of cobalt carbonate hydroxide hydrate/dopamine precursor. Thanks to the well introduction of core-shell and nanotube structure, Co@C composite shows more superior microwave absorption than pristine Co nanoparticles. The unique microstructure provides abundant heterostructures and conductive paths to induce interfacial polarization and conductive loss for boosting dielectric loss. Through regulating the graphitization layer of C shell, the dielectric property could be further enhanced. Coupled with the favorable magnetic loss from the embedded Co nanoparticles, the products exhibit an optimal absorption intensity of -48 dB under low filler content of 30%. And effective absorption frequency bandwidth is up to 5.2 GHz at small thickness of 1.8 mm. Such excellent achievements demonstrate that the core-shell Co@C nanotube composites can be applied as a promising candidate for lightweight and thin electromagnetic absorption.

Abstract:The advancement of electromagnetic (EM) protection technology promotes the urgent demand for the structural design of electromagnetic functional materials. Here, tadpole-like Fe@SiO2@C-Ni (FSCN) composites with magnetic core–shell and nonspherical hollow architectures through multiple hydrolysis-polymerization reactions are reported. The Fe core and well-distributed Ni nanoparticles greatly promote the magnetic properties of FSCN and construct a multiscale magnetic coupling network. Meanwhile, the multishell composites consisting of carbon shell with Ni decorated possess an abundance of heterogeneous interfaces, generating effective interfacial polarization and relaxation. The hollow feature and the coordination of magnetic and dielectric capacities offer an optimized impedance balance, providing a fundament for the microwaves propagating into the absorber. Owing to the attractive effects resulted from the deliberate tadpole-like structure design, the FSCN composites ensure an effective EM energy conversion at the high-frequency region, which obtain the strongest reflection loss value of −45.2 dB and the extremely broad effective absorption bandwidth of 13.1 GHz. This work provides an important solution for magnetic-dielectric nanostructure design for microwave absorption and energy conversion materials.

Abstract:A facile method for the preparation of microwave absorbers with low density, high microwave absorptivity, and broad band is of paramount importance to the progress in practical application. Herein, commonly-used metal organic frameworks (MOFs) prepared just by mechanical stirring in methanol at room temperature were chosen as sacrificial templates to synthesize porous carbon composites with tunable dielectric and magnetic properties. With the replacement of Co atoms on the surface of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) by Zn atoms, a Co-doped porous carbon composite with a low-dielectric amorphous carbon/Zn shell was constructed after annealing, leading to excellent impedance matching condition. Consequently, the as-obtained composite (Co/C@C-800) shows marvelous microwave absorption properties with an absorption capacity of −43.97 dB and a corresponding effective absorption bandwidth of 4.1 GHz, far exceeding that of the traditional porous carbon and composites directly derived from ZIF-67. The results provide a convenient way to modify MOFs for enhanced microwave absorption materials from the synergy of dielectric and magnetic losses.
Carbon Encapsulated Core-Shell Structure Znfe2o4 Sphere Composites Coupled with Excellent Microwave Absorption and Corrosion Resistance

Abstract:Microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) have been identified as an efficient means to solve major electromagnetic pollution problems. Current core-shell composite MAMs are fabricated as single magnetic cores with dielectric shells, yielding decreased magnetic couplings and impedance mismatches. Herein, carbon shell encapsulated core-shell structured zinc ferrate (ZnFe2O4) sphere composites (CSZF@C) were fabricated using a hydrothermal method and subsequent carbonisation process. The complex permittivity and complex permeability of CSZF@C can be effectively adjusted by varying the parameters of the outer carbon shell. The synergistic effect of carbon shell and inner core-shell structured ZnFe2O4 (CSZF) not only meets impedance matching but also improves electromagnetic energy loss, a result of the unique microstructure. CSZF@C-1 exhibited a considerable reflection loss (RL) of -53.5 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of up to 6.56 GHz, the thickness is only 2.94 mm. Meanwhile, the epoxy resin coating of CSZF@C-1 substantially increases the corrosion resistance of the metal substrate owing to carbon encapsulation. This study presents new ideas for designing efficient multifunctional nanocomposites with high microwave absorption and corrosion resistance.
