Abstract:Background. The optimal timing of temporary ileostomy closure with respect to the time of adjuvant chemotherapy following sphincter-saving surgery for rectal cancer remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical and oncological outcomes of ileostomy closure before, during, and after adjuvant chemotherapy following curative rectal cancer resection. Methods. Patients diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma who underwent low anterior resection and temporary loop ileostomy during May 2015 and September 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. Patients undergoing ileostomy closure before adjuvant chemotherapy (Group I) were compared to patients undergoing closure during (Group II) and after (Group III) adjuvant chemotherapy. Results. A total of 225 patients were evaluated for eligibility, and 132 were finally selected and divided into 3 groups (24 in Group I, 53 in Group II, and 55 in Group III). No significant differences were observed in operative time, postoperative hospital stay, postoperative complications, total adjuvant chemotherapy cycles, and low anterior resection syndrome scores among the three groups. There was no significant difference in disease-free survival (p=0.834) and overall survival (p=0.462) between the three groups. Conclusion. Temporary ileostomy closure before adjuvant chemotherapy following curative rectal cancer resection can achieve a clinical and oncological safety level equal to stoma closure during or after chemotherapy in selected patients.

Abstract:Objective To explore the combination of Chinese and Western medicine combined with minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery in the clinical eff icacy of the treatment of acute intestinal obstruction.Methods Retrospective analysis of surgery in Baiyun people's hospital from October 2001 to October 2009 were treated 146 cases of clinical data in patients with adhesive intestinal obstruction were randomly divided into two groups,treatment group 73 cases,the purposes of the combined Chinese and Western medicine treatment of adhesive intestinal laparoscopic surgery obstruction in the control group,73 patients taking laparoscopic surgery adhesive intestinal obstruction.Results There were no deaths in the treatment group mean operative time was(65±18)min,control group,mean operative time was(64±19)min,no signifi cant difference between the two groups(P0.05);the treatment group The average time for the fi rst time,exhaust(1.3±1.2)d,the control group mean time to fi rst exhaust time(2.1±1.8)d,signifi cant difference between the two groups(P0.01);treatment group complication rate was 4.1%(6/146),the control group complication rate was 11.6%(17/146),the difference was statistically signifi cant(P0.05);The treatment group complication rate was 4.1%(6/146),the control group complication rate was 11.6%(17/146),the difference was statistically signifi cant(P0.05);treatment group,average length of stay(7.2±4.3)d,the average treatment time of the control group(9.3±4.7)d,statistically significant difference between the two groups(P0.05);The average hospitalization cost of the treatment group(6964±2539)yuan,the control group mean hospitalization costs(7534±2813)yuan,the difference was statistically signifi cant(P0.05).Conclusion Chinese and Western medicine combined with laparoscopic surgery and minimally invasive treatment of adhesive intestinal obstruction in patients with trauma,faster postoperative recovery,fewer complications and shorter hospital stay and hospitalization cost less and so on.
Ostomy in continuity: A novel approach for the management of children with complex short bowel syndrome

Abstract:Introduction: Despite medical and surgical management, a subset of children with short bowel syndrome (SBS) who have discrepancy between proximal small bowel and distal colon have persistent feeding intolerance. We propose the use of an Ostomy in Continuity (OIC) (Bishop-Koop or Santulli) as a salvage procedure to decompress the proximal bowel while still maintaining maximal intestinal length, in these patients. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 104 SBS patients identified sixteen patients who underwent an OIC. Measures of reliance on parenteral nutrition (PN), growth, intestinal failure associated liver disease, the rate of central venous catheter infections and enterocolitis were collected. These parameters were compared before and after the placement of OIC in the same patients at a median follow-up period of 24months (range 3-52months). Outcome measures include intestinal autonomy and survival without intestinal and liver transplant. Results: All 16 patients showed significant improvement in their enteral tolerance after OIC. The mean PN caloric requirement decreased from 95% to 21% (p=0.0001). The median weight Z score improved from -1.18 to 0.20 (p=0.0006) and the median height Z score improved from -2.74 to -1 (p=0.0001). The mean conjugated bilirubin decreased from 10.3mg/dl to 0.3mg/dl (p=0.0001) in nine patients with hyperbilirubinemia. There was no decrease in central venous catheter infections (CVCI) but there was a decrease in the rate of enterocolitis. None of the patients required intestinal or liver transplant. There was one minor skin excoriation complication in one patient with a Bishop-Koop stoma. Conclusions: The application of an ostomy in continuity within a comprehensive intestinal rehabilitation program is a novel approach in the treatment of refractory short bowel syndrome that improves intestinal autonomy and decreases the rate of enterocolitis. Congenital duodenal obstruction in neonates: a decade’s experience from one center

Abstract:Background Congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) is one of the most common anomalies in newborns, and accounting for nearly half of all cases of neonatal intestinal obstruction. This study aimed to review our single-center experience in managing congenital duodenal obstruction while evaluate the outcomes. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of the records of all neonates dianogsed with congenital duodenal obstruction admitted to our center between January 2003 and December 2012. We analyzed demographic criteria, clinical manifestations, associated anomalies, radiologic findings, surgical methods, postoperative complications, and final outcomes. Results The study comprised 287 newborns (193 boys and 94 girls). Birth weight ranged from 950 g to 4850 g. Fifty-three patients were born prematurely between 28 and 36 weeks’ gestation. Malrotation was diagnosed in 174 patients, annular pancreas in 66, duodenal web in 55, duodenal atresia or stenosis in 9, preduodenal portal vein in 2, and congenital band compression in 1. Twenty patients had various combinations of these conditions. Presenting symptoms included bilious vomiting, dehydration, and weight loss. X-rays of the upper abdomen demonstrated the presence of a typical double-bubble sign or air-fluid levels in 68.64% of patients, and confirmatory upper and/or lower gastrointestinal contrast studies were obtained in 64.11%. Multiple associated abnormalities were observed in 50.52% of the patients. Various surgical approaches were used, including Ladd’s procedure, duodenoplasty, duodenoduodenostomy, duodenojejunostomy, or a combination of these. Seventeen patients died postoperatively and 14 required re-operation. Conclusions Congenital duodenal obstruction is a complex entity with various etiologies and often includes multiple concomitant disorders. Timely diagnosis and aggressive surgery are key to improving prognosis. Care should be taken to address all of the causes of duodenal obstruction and/or associated alimentary tract anomalies during surgery.
Clinical Characteristics and Surgical Treatment of Intestinal Stenosis after Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Neonates

Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical features and surgical treatment of intestinal stenosis after necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in neonates.Methods The clinical data were retrospectively analyzed for patients diagnosed as NEC-related intestinal stenosis from 2011 to 2016.Results A total of 107 children were enrolled and there were 68 boys and 39 girls.Sixty-seven cases suffered intestinal stenosis after conservative treatment.The major symptom of intestinal obstruction was feeding intolerance.Radiology indicated flatulence or low ileum obstruction.Colonic stenosis was detected with colonography in some patients.Forty children undergoing ostomy had bowel stenosis during routine exploration of distal bowel and had no symptoms associated with intestinal stenosis.All but 2 cases underwent staged operations with resection of strictures and primary end-to-end anastomosis.Among 31 children with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA),4 cases underwent intraoperative PDA ligation.One PDA case died postoperatively of pulmonary fibrosis without ligation and there were 2 cases of postoperative incision dehiscence.The remainder recovered well.Conclusions Feeding intolerance of patients with NEC after conservative treatment may raise an alert of bowel stenosis.An optimal prognosis may be achieved with primary end-to-end anastomosis.Staged operation is feasible for children with severe illness.During stage Ⅱ surgery for NEC children with stage Ⅰ ostomy,attention should be paid to exploring distal bowel and watching for secondary intestinal stenosis.Concomitant malformations can be synchronized intraoperatively.

Abstract:Background: Intestinal obstruction in neonates remains a critical medical emergency in the field of pediatric surgery. Clinical conditions often experience a sudden deterioration in their appearance. Multiple factors contribute to unfavorable clinical outcomes in underdeveloped nations. The study was conducted to identify the etiology, management, and outcomes of neonatal intestinal obstruction at a specialized medical facility. Methods: This retrospective study included 168 newborns who had to be operated on in the neonatal intensive care unit between 2021 and 2023 due to intestinal obstruction. The clinical and demographic characteristics of the infants, final diagnosis, surgical complications, and mortality rate were documented. In addition, the relationship between risk factors such as birth weight, gestational age, length of surgery, and postoperative problems was evaluated. Results: The majority of neonatal intestinal obstruction occurred within seven days of birth, with 8-15 days being the second most common. Most babies were born at full term (53.57%) and weighed 2 kg or more (75%). In newborns in our region, duodenal, ileal, jejunal, and colonic atresias were found to be the most common causes of neonatal intestinal obstruction that requires surgery. The study detected 45 postoperative problems, 26.79% of the total. Out of 168 patients, twelve (7.14%) had septicemia, seven (4.17%) had anastomotic leak, seven (4.17%) had aspiration pneumonitis, and two (1.19%) needed re-exploration. Overall mortality was 10.12%, with 17 patients dying. Moreover, 119 patients (70.83%) survived without issues, while 32 (19.05%) survived with complications. Conclusion: Our findings emphasize the significance of promptly diagnosing, intervening, and implementing suitable management approaches to enhance outcomes for newborns with intestinal obstruction. Furthermore, it highlights valuable perspectives for healthcare professionals in enhancing care for this specific group of patients.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate clinical manifestations,diagnosis and treatment of congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) in neonates.Methods Retrospective analysis of 246 neonatal patients with CDO admitted between January 2002 and December 2011 was conducted.Clinical data including demographic criteria,clinical manifestations,associated anomalies,radiologic findings,operations,postoperative complications and final outcomes were recorded and analyzed.Total 246 newborns were enrolled in this study,with 173 boys and 73 girls.Birth weight (BW) ranged from 950 g to 4 850 g.Forty-three babies were born prematurely.One hundred and fifty eight cases were diagnosed with malrotation,49 cases with annular pancreas,45 cases with duodenal web,7 cases with duodenal atresia or stenosis and 1 case of duodenal abnormal bands,while 14 cases had various combinations of these conditions.One hundred and twenty four patients had associated anomalies.Results Operative procedures included Ladd's procedure,duodenoduodenostomy,excision of the web and duodenoplasty,duodenojejunostomy or combination of the above.Seventeen patients died or withdraw treatment postoperatively.The causes of death were combinations of prematurity,sepsis,pneumonia,pulmonary hemorrhage,short bowel,or cardiac anomaly.Fourteen patients were reoperated for wound dehiscence,adhesive intestinal obstruction,anastomotic leak,cholestasis,missed diagnosis or recurrence of malrotation.Enteral feeding was started at an average of 8.51 ± 3.17 days after operation,and the mean hospital stay was 14.87 ± 5.60 days.Conclusions CDO is a complex entity with various causations and multiple accompanied diseases.Timely diagnosis and aggressive surgery are key points for better prognosis.Multiple causes of duodenal obstruction and/or associated alimentary tract anomalies should always be aware during operation.

Abstract:Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a common acute abdomen in newborns.Premature infants,especially who have ever involved in infection or anoxia,are quite liable to NEC.NEC is likely to cause intestinal necrosis or intestinal perforation.As the neonatology develops,the survival rate of premature infant and very low birth weight(VLBW) improves too,which at the same time increases the incidence of NEC in newborns.The increasing early diagnosis rate of necrotizing enterocolitis,effective conservative or surgical treatments are saving more and more NEC infants,which also bring higher incidences of NEC complications.Enterostenosis is the most common complication of NEC patient who was given a conservative treatment,and its incidence is as high as 15％～ 57 ％.It is difficult to differentiate from feeding difficulties and gastroenteritis due to the lack of specific clinical manifestations in early enterostenosis,which makes the early diagnosis of enterostenosis seems difficult and missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis occurred.Enterostenosis may cause growth retardation,malnutrition or even severe consequences such as enterobrosis,sepsis or death.At present,enterostenosis of NEC has already attracted various medical workers 'attention.Basing on all of the above,our paper took a review on the progress of diagnosis and surgical treatments to enterostenosis.
Abdominal Cocoon with Early Postoperative Small Bowel Obstruction A Case Report and Review of Literature in China

Abstract:Rationale: Abdominal cocoon is a condition in which intestinal obstruction results from the encasement of part or whole of the small bowel by a thick fibrous membrane, giving the appearance of a cocoon. The preoperative diagnosis is difficult to be made and the treatment is still controversial. Patient concerns: Here we describe the case of a 62-year-old male presented with a 24-h history of continual colicky abdominal pain, which was accompanied with nausea and vomiting. Diagnosis: Accurate diagnosis of abdominal cocoon was made intraoperatively. Interventions: Membrane excision and adhesiolysis were performed and the patient experienced early postoperative small bowel obstruction. Nasointestinal obstruction tube was then installed and bowel function was gradually recovered by the 20th postoperative day. Outcomes: The patient recovered well and was discharged from the hospital on the 30th postoperative day Lessons: Abdominal cocoon can occur at any age. The possibility of abdominal cocoon should also be considered in infertile patients. Imaging studies may be helpful to make the correct diagnosis, and surgery should be performed for patients with recurrent acute or chronic intestinal obstruction.
Clinical Features and Management of Intestinal Strictures after Neonatal Necrotizing Enterocolitis:Analysis of 79 Cases

Abstract:Objective To summarize the clinical features and management of intestinal stricture following neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC).Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 79 infants with intestinal stricture following NEC treated in our hospital between April,2014 and June,2018.Of the 79 infants,20 were diagnosed to have Bell stage I NEC,52 were in Bell stageⅡand 7 in Bell stageⅢ.All the infants underwent preoperative X-Ray examination,73 had gastrointestinal contrast study and 69 had rectal mucosal biopsy.Results In these infants,the clinical signs of intestinal stricture occurred at a mean of 46.5d following NEC.Among the 73 infants receiving gastrointestinal contrast study,58 were found to have intestinal stenosis and 6 had fetal colon.Rectal mucosal biopsy in 69 infants revealed Hirschsprung disease in 3 cases.Intraoperative exploration showed that intestinal stenosis occurred mostly in the ascending colon,transverse colon and descending colon,and multiple stenosis was detected in 32 cases.Surgical resection of stricture and primary end-to-end anastomosis were performed in 71 cases,and the remaining 8 cases underwent staged surgeries.In the 73 cases with complete follow-up data,3 had postoperative adhesions,and 2 of them received conservative treatment and the other underwent a second operation.Eight infants were hospitalized for 1 to 3 times for malnutrition and dehydration due to repeated diarrhea,and eventually recovered and were discharged smoothly;all the other infants had uneventful recovery without stricture recurrence.Conclusion Intestinal stenosis following NEC occurs most frequently in the colon,and some cases may have multiple strictures.Gastrointestinal contrast study is the primary option for examination.Surgical resection of the stricture and primary end-to-end anastomosis can achieve good therapeutic effect with favorable prognoses in the patients.
Comparison of outcomes between two surgical techniques for patients with Intestinal Neuronal Dysplasia

Abstract:Abstract Objective: To investigate the clinical analysis of ileal Santulli stoma and ileal double-lumen stoma in children diagnosed with intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND).Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on the children who were admitted to our hospital for intestinal obstruction from January 2014 to January 2019, underwent fistula operation and fistula closure operation, and were diagnosed with IND. The children with Hirschsprung's disease and other types of hirscholon homology, anorectal malformation, accompanied by other serious organic diseases and lost to follow-up were excluded. According to the different modes of fistula, the children were divided into ileal Santulli stoma group and ileal double-lumen stoma group. The body weight of the children in the two groups during the second stage of fistula closure operation was compared. The number of hospitalizations due to enteritis and dehydration during the two operations was compared.Results: A total of 23 cases (12 males and 11 females) were included in this study, including 10 cases in the Santulli group and 13 cases in the ileal double-lumen stoma group. There were no significant differences in baseline data (including gender, preoperative age and weight) and fistula location between the two groups. Compared with the ileal double-lumen stoma group, Santulli stoma group had significantly higher weight of fistula precursor (P<0.05), the interval between two operations was shorter (P<0.05), and less hospitalization for enteritis and dehydration during the two operations (P<0.05) Less economic cost after fistula (P<0.05).Conclusion: The clinical effect of ileum Santulli fistula is significantly better than double-lumen ileum fistula, which is not only beneficial to the growth and development of children after the first fistula, but also can shorten the time of fistula closure, reduce the incidence of dehydration, and reduce the economic burden of family members. Therefore, it is worthy of clinical promotion and application.
The safety and effectiveness of Santulli enterostomy in neonatal intestinal conditions

Abstract:Background: As an end stoma, Santulli enterostomy provides early restoration of intestinal continuity without formal laparotomy. Short amputation of the common limb enables closure on a side to restore anatomic continuity without sacrificing valuable intestine; additionally, the procedure is simple and safe. Most newborns who require enterostomy might benefit from Santulli enterostomy; however, several pediatric surgeons lack information regarding this procedure. Therefore, we have reviewed our experience about Santulli enterostomy and explore the advantages and indications in neonatal intestinal conditions. Methods: The clinical data of 76 neonates who underwent enterostomywere obtained. The patients were divided into two groups: the Santulli group with 33 cases who underwent Santulli enterostomy, and the control group with 43 cases who underwent double- or single-lumen ostomy. The general data of the two groups were analyzed, and the perioperative/postoperative complications, clinical data and the long-term outcomes were compared. Results: There was no difference in the demographic informations, the level of enterostomy, the rate of high-sight stoma, the operative time and bleeding of enterostomy between the two groups. Compared to the control group, the operative time of ostomy closure was less in the Santulli group (53.00 vs. 152.47, P < 0.001). The duration of parenteral nutrition (27.45 vs. 44.56, P = 0.010), the mean interval of initial enterostomy to stomal closure (131.21 vs. 216.42, P < 0.001), and length of stay (46.00 vs. 67.60, P = 0.007) were shorter, while the incidence of postoperative complications and hospitalization costs (11.21 vs. 15.49, P = 0.006) were lower. The Santulli procedure can reduce the morbidity of high output ostomy (2 vs. 10, P = 0.042) and short bowel syndrome (3 vs. 132, P = 0.025), shorten the discrepancy of diameter between the proximal and distal segments, maximize the available intestine, and monitor the movement of the distal bowel. The length of incision was shorter, and the catch-up growth was significantly faster in the Santulli group. Conclusion: Santulli enterostomy is a superior procedure in the treatment of neonatal intestinal conditions, in terms of fewer complications, faster catch-up growth, shorter hospitalization time and treatment duration. It should be the procedure of choice in several newborns with intestinal conditions that require ostomy.

Treatment of Chronic Radiation Intestinal Injury by Ileostomy Combined with Perioperative Nutrition Support Therapy

Abstract:Objective: To review the application of ileostomy combined with perioperative nutrition support therapy in the treatment of chronic radiation intestinal injury. Methods: The clinical data of patients with chronic radiation intestinal injury who received ileostomy combined with perioperative nutrition support therapy in the department of general surgery, Nanjing General Hospital of Nanjing Military Command from January 2012 to December 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. The short-term complications and perioperative nutrition process were recorded, and the long-term prognoses were followed up. Results: Forty-six patients were included in the study. The overall postoperative complication rate was 36. 96％. All the patients restored total enteral nutrition at the time of discharge (18±15) days. There was no post-operative mortality. Thirty-six patients were followed up (follow-up rate of 78. 26％), and the follow-up time was (25 ± 17) months. Tumor recurrence was occurred in 7 patients (19. 44％) during follow-up and 6 deaths (16. 67％). All of the 30 (83. 33％) survived patients maintained total enteral feeding, 27 of whom (75％) returned to normal diet. Twenty-one patients (58. 33％) underwent a second staging ostomy surgery in our hospital and recovered well. Conclusion: For selected patients with chronic radiation intestinal injury, ileostomy combined with perioperative nutrition support therapy could effectively restore intestinal patency and total enteral nutrition, and reduce the mortality.

Abstract:Background: Total colonic atresia is an uncommon congenital anomaly associated with neonatal intestinal obstruction, often necessitating prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention to prevent life-threatening complications. Understanding the etiology and optimal management strategies is crucial for ensuring favorable outcomes. Case Presentation: We present a case of a full-term male neonate with total colonic atresia, who presented with failure to pass meconium, abdominal distension, and vomiting. Diagnostic imaging confirmed intestinal obstruction, leading to surgical exploration revealing an atretic colon extending from the Ileocolic Junction to the Rectosigmoid Junction. An ileostomy was performed, followed by meticulous postoperative care, resulting in a successful resolution of symptoms and discharge from the hospital. Conclusion: Timely recognition and staged surgical management are paramount in addressing total colonic atresia, emphasizing the importance of early intervention for optimal patient outcomes. Long-term follow-up and comprehensive care are essential to ensure the overall well-being of affected newborns.
Comparison of the effect between traditional conservation and nasointestinal tube placement in adhesive small bowel obstruction: A matched case-control study

Abstract:Adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO) causes a major burden in emergency medicine. Owing to in situ decompression, nasointestinal tube (NIT) placement has been increasingly used in clinical practice compared with traditional conservation (TC); however, the indications remain controversial. This study was designed to explore the indications for each treatment in ASBOs and then suggest the optimal strategy. After propensity score matching, 128 pairs were included (the NIT and TC groups). The occurrence of severe adverse events (SAEs), peri-treatment clinical parameters, and radiological features were compared between the successful and failed treatment groups. According to different stages of the entire treatment, the independent risk factors for adverse effects for ASBO were analysed in phase I and phase II. In phase I, normal red blood cells (RBC) levels (p = 0.011) and a balanced sodium ion level (p = 0.016) positively affected the outcomes of TC treatment. In phase II, for the TC group, the successful treatment rate reached 79.5% for patients with ASBOs whose normal RBC levels (p = 0.006) or decreasing white blood cells (WBC) levels (p = 0.014) after treatment. For the NIT group, the treatment success rate was 68.1% for patients whose electrolyte imbalance could be reversed or whose neutrophil count/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) levels was lower than 4.3 (p = 0.018). TC treatment is highly recommended for patients with normal RBC counts and sodium levels pretreatment. After dynamic monitoring of the treatment process, for both the TC and NIT groups, once ASBOs had elevated inflammatory biomarkers or irreversible electrolyte disturbances, surgical interference was preferred.

Abstract:Background: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is common and usually requires surgical intervention. Intestinal plication is a traditional but critical strategy for SBO in certain scenarios. This study is to compare the short-term and long-term outcome between internal and external plications in the management of SBO. Methods: All patients receiving intestinal plication in our hospital were retrospectively collected. Short-term outcome including postoperative complications, reoperation, postoperative ICU stay, starting day of liquid diet and postoperative hospitalization, as well as long-term outcome including recurrence of obstruction, readmission, reoperation and death were compared between groups. Gut function at annual follow-up visits was evaluated as well. Results: Nine internal and 11 external candidates were recruited into each group. The major causes of plication were adhesive obstruction, abdominal cocoon, volvulus and intussusception. Lower incidence of postoperative complication (p = 0.043) and shorter postoperative hospitalization (p = 0.049) was observed in internal group. One patient receiving external plication died from anastomosis leakage. During the 5-year follow-up period, the readmission rate was low in both groups (22.2 % vs. 9.1 %), and none of patients required reoperation or deceased. None of patients exhibited gut dysfunction, and all patients restored normal gut function after 4 years. Patients in external group demonstrated accelerated recovery of gut function after surgery. Conclusions: This study compares short-term and long-term outcome of patients receiving internal or external intestinal plication. We suggest a conservative attitude toward external plication strategy. Surgical indication for intestinal plication is critical and awaits future investigations.

Abstract:Background Anastomotic leakage is a life-threatening complication. Improvement of the anastomosis technique is needed, especially in patients with an inflamed edematous intestine. The aim of our study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of an asymmetric figure-of-eight single-layer suture technique for intestinal anastomosis in pediatric patients. Methods A total of 23 patients underwent intestinal anastomosis at the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Binzhou Medical University Hospital. Demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters, anastomosis time, duration of nasogastric tube placement, day of first postoperative bowel movement, complications, and length of hospital stay were statistically analyzed. The follow-up was conducted for 3–6 months after discharge. Results Patients were divided into two groups: the single-layer asymmetric figure-of-eight suture technique (group 1) and the traditional suture technique (group 2). Body mass index in group 1 was lower than in group 2 (14.43 ± 3.23 vs. 19.38 ± 6.74; P = 0.036). The mean intestine anastomosis time in group 1 (18.83 ± 0.83 min) was less than that in group 2 (22.70 ± 4.11 min; P = 0.005). Patients in group 1 had an earlier first postoperative bowel movement (2.17 ± 0.72 vs. 2.80 ± 0.42; P = 0.023). The duration of nasogastric tube placement in group 1 was shorter than that in group 2 (4.12 ± 1.42 vs. 5.60 ± 1.57; P = 0.043). There was no significant difference in laboratory variables, complication occurrence, and length of hospital stay between the two groups. Conclusion The asymmetric figure-of-eight single-layer suture technique for intestinal anastomosis was feasible and effective. More studies are needed to compare the novel technique with the traditional single-layer suture.
