Abstract:We prove border rank bounds for a class of $GL(V)$-invariant tensors in $V^*\otimes U\otimes W$, where $U$ and $W$ are $GL(V)$-modules. These tensors correspond to spaces of matrices of constant rank. In particular we prove lower bounds for tensors in $\mathbb{C}^l\otimes\mathbb{C}^m\otimes\mathbb{C}^n$ that are not $1_A$-generic, where no nontrivial bounds were known, and also when $l,m\ll n$, where previously only bounds for unbalanced matrix multiplication tensors were known. We give the first explicit use of Young flattenings for tensors beyond Koszul to obtain border rank lower bounds, and determine the border rank of three tensors.

Abstract:We determine defining equations for the set of concise tensors of minimal border rank in $C^m\otimes C^m\otimes C^m$ when $m=5$ and the set of concise minimal border rank $1_*$-generic tensors when $m=5,6$. We solve this classical problem in algebraic complexity theory with the aid of two recent developments: the 111-equations defined by Buczyńska-Buczyński and results of Jelisiejew-Šivic on the variety of commuting matrices. We introduce a new algebraic invariant of a concise tensor, its 111-algebra, and exploit it to give a strengthening of Friedland's normal form for $1$-degenerate tensors satisfying Strassen's equations. We use the 111-algebra to characterize wild minimal border rank tensors and classify them in $C^5\otimes C^5\otimes C^5$.

Abstract:Motivated by questions arising in signal processing, computational complexity, and other areas, we study the ranks and border ranks of symmetric tensors using geometric methods. We provide improved lower bounds for the rank of a symmetric tensor (i.e., a homogeneous polynomial) obtained by considering the singularities of the hypersurface defined by the polynomial. We obtain normal forms for polynomials of border rank up to five, and compute or bound the ranks of several classes of polynomials, including monomials, the determinant, and the permanent.

Classification and degenerations of small minimal border rank tensors via modules

Abstract:We give a self-contained classification of $1_*$-generic minimal border rank tensors in $C^m \otimes C^m \otimes C^m$ for $m \leq 5$. Together with previous results, this gives a classification of all minimal border rank tensors in $C^m \otimes C^m \otimes C^m$ for $m \leq 5$: there are $37$ isomorphism classes. We fully describe possible degenerations among the tensors. We prove that there are no $1$-degenerate minimal border rank tensors in $C^m \otimes C^m \otimes C^m $ for $m \leq 4$.

Abstract:One of the fundamental open problems in the field of tensors is the border Comon's conjecture: given a symmetric tensor $F\in(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes d}$ for $d\geq 3$, its border and symmetric border ranks are equal. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for large classes of concise tensors in $(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes d}$ of border rank $n$, i.e., tensors of minimal border rank. These families include all tame tensors and all tensors whenever $n\leq d+1$. Our technical tools are border apolarity and border varieties of sums of powers.

Abstract:We present an $O^*\left(|\mathbb{F}|^{(R-n_*)\left(\sum_d n_d\right)+n_*}\right)$-time algorithm for determining whether a tensor of shape $n_0\times\dots\times n_{D-1}$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ has rank $\le R$, where $n_*:=\max_d n_d$; we assume without loss of generality that $\forall d:n_d\le R$. We also extend this problem to its border rank analog, i.e., determining tensor rank over rings of the form $\mathbb{F}[x]/(x^H)$, and give an $O^*\left(|\mathbb{F}|^{H\sum_{1\le r\le R} \sum_d \min(r,n_d)}\right)$-time algorithm. Both of our algorithms use polynomial space.

We give algorithms for computing the symmetric rank for $2\times ... \times 2$ tensors and for tensors of small border rank. Abstract:In this paper we study typical ranks of real $m\times n \times \ell$ tensors. In the case $ (m-1)(n-1)+1 \leq \ell \leq mn$ the typical ranks are contained in $\{\ell, \ell +1\}$, and $\ell$ is always a typical rank. We provide a geometric proof of this fact. We express the probabilities of these ranks in terms of the probabilities of the numbers of intersection points of a random linear space with the Segre variety. In addition, we give some heuristics to understand how the probabilities of these ranks behave, based on asymptotic results on the average number of real points in a random linear slice of a Segre variety with a subspace of complementary dimension. The typical ranks of real $3\times 3\times 5$ tensors are $5$ and $6$. We link the rank probabilities of a $3\times 3 \times 5$ tensor with i.i.d.\ Gaussian entries to the probability of a random cubic surface in $¶^3$ having real lines. As a consequence, we get a bound on the expected number of real lines on such a surface.

Abstract:We study the tensor rank of the tensor corresponding to the algebra of n-variate complex polynomials modulo the dth power of each variable. As a result we find a sequence of tensors with a large gap between rank and border rank, and thus a counterexample to a conjecture of Rhodes. At the same time we obtain a new lower bound on the tensor rank of tensor powers of the generalised W-state tensor. In addition, we exactly determine the tensor rank of the tensor cube of the three-party W-state tensor, thus answering a question of Chen et al.

Abstract:We show that the border subrank of a sufficiently general tensor in $(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes d}$ is $\mathcal{O}(n^{1/(d-1)})$ for $n \to \infty$. Since this matches the growth rate $\Theta(n^{1/(d-1)})$ for the generic (non-border) subrank recently established by Derksen-Makam-Zuiddam, we find that the generic border subrank has the same growth rate. In our proof, we use a generalisation of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion that we believe will be of independent interest.

Abstract:Motivated by problems in algebraic complexity theory (e.g., matrix multiplication) and extremal combinatorics (e.g., the cap set problem and the sunflower problem), we introduce the geometric rank as a new tool in the study of tensors and hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is an upper bound on the subrank of tensors and the independence number of hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is smaller than the slice rank of Tao, and relate geometric rank to the analytic rank of Gowers and Wolf in an asymptotic fashion. As a first application, we use geometric rank to prove a tight upper bound on the (border) subrank of the matrix multiplication tensors, matching Strassen's well-known lower bound from 1987.
A Gap in the Subrank of Tensors

Abstract:The subrank of tensors is a measure of how much a tensor can be ''diagonalized''. This parameter was introduced by Strassen to study fast matrix multiplication algorithms in algebraic complexity theory and is closely related to many central tensor parameters (e.g. slice rank, partition rank, analytic rank, geometric rank, G-stable rank) and problems in combinatorics, computer science and quantum information theory. Strassen (J. Reine Angew. Math., 1988) proved that there is a gap in the subrank when taking large powers under the tensor product: either the subrank of all powers is at most one, or it grows as a power of a constant strictly larger than one. In this paper, we precisely determine this constant for tensors of any order. Additionally, for tensors of order three, we prove that there is a second gap in the possible rates of growth. Our results strengthen the recent work of Costa and Dalai (J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A, 2021), who proved a similar gap for the slice rank. Our theorem on the subrank has wider applications by implying such gaps not only for the slice rank, but for any ``normalized monotone''. In order to prove the main result, we characterize when a tensor has a very structured tensor (the W-tensor) in its orbit closure. Our methods include degenerations in Grassmanians, which may be of independent interest.

Using a fragmentation technique, we characterise (h+1) ‐tuples (R1,⋯,Rh,R) of non‐empty families of partitions of {1,⋯,d} such that it suffices that an order‐d tensor has bounded Ri ‐rank for each i=1,⋯,h for it to have bounded R ‐rank. On the way, we prove power lower bounds on suitable products of diagonal tensors, providing a qualitative answer to a question of Naslund.

Abstract:We study the semialgebraic structure of $D_r$, the set of nonnegative tensors of nonnegative rank not more than $r$, and use the results to infer various properties of nonnegative tensor rank. We determine all nonnegative typical ranks for cubical nonnegative tensors and show that the direct sum conjecture is true for nonnegative tensor rank. We show that nonnegative, real, and complex ranks are all equal for a general nonnegative tensor of nonnegative rank strictly less than the complex generic rank. In addition, such nonnegative tensors always have unique nonnegative rank-$r$ decompositions if the real tensor space is $r$-identifiable. We determine conditions under which a best nonnegative rank-$r$ approximation has a unique nonnegative rank-$r$ decomposition: for $r \le 3$, this is always the case; for general $r$, this is the case when the best nonnegative rank-$r$ approximation does not lie on the boundary of $D_r$. Many of our general identifiability results also apply to real tensors and real symmetric tensors.

Abstract:Tensors, or multi-linear forms, are important objects in a variety of areas from analytics, to combinatorics, to computational complexity theory. Notions of tensor rank aim to quantify the "complexity" of these forms, and are thus also important. While there is one single definition of rank that completely captures the complexity of matrices (and thus linear transformations), there is no definitive analog for tensors. Rather, many notions of tensor rank have been defined over the years, each with their own set of uses. In this paper we survey the popular notions of tensor rank. We give a brief history of their introduction, motivating their existence, and discuss some of their applications in computer science. We also give proof sketches of recent results by Lovett, and Cohen and Moshkovitz, which prove asymptotic equivalence between three key notions of tensor rank over finite fields with at least three elements.

Abstract:The tensor rank and border rank of the $3 \times 3$ determinant tensor is known to be $5$ if characteristic is not two. In this paper, we show that the tensor rank remains $5$ for fields of characteristic two as well. We also include an analysis of $5 \times 5$ and $7 \times 7$ determinant and permanent tensors, as well as the symmetric $3 \times 3$ permanent and determinant tensors. We end with some remarks on binary tensors.

For a tensor $T$, let $\underline R(T)$ denote its border rank. We (i) give the first hand-checkable algebraic proof that $\underline R(M_2)=7$,(ii) prove $\underline R(M_{\langle 223\rangle})=10$, and $\underline R(M_{\langle 233\rangle})=14$, where previously the only nontrivial matrix multiplication tensor whose border rank had been determined was $M_2$,(iii) prove $\underline R( M_3)\geq 17$, (iv) prove $\underline R( det_3)=17$, improving the previous lower bound of $12$, (v) prove $\underline R(M_{\langle 2nn\rangle})\geq n^2+1.32n$ for all $n\geq 25$ (previously only $\underline R(M_{\langle 2nn\rangle})\geq n^2+1$ was known) as well as lower bounds for $4\leq n\leq 25$, and (vi) prove $\underline R(M_{\langle 3nn\rangle})\geq n^2+2 n+1$ for all $ n\geq 21$, where previously only $\underline R(M_{\langle 3nn\rangle})\geq n^2+2$ was known, as well as lower boundsfor $4\leq n\leq 21$. Our results utilize a new technique initiated by Buczy\'{n}ska and Buczy\'{n}ski, called border apolarity. The two key ingredients are: (i) the use of a multi-graded ideal associated to a border rank $r$ decomposition of any tensor, and (ii) the exploitation of the large symmetry group of $T$ to restrict to $B_T$-invariant ideals, where $B_T$ is a maximal solvable subgroup of the symmetry group of $T$.
