Abstract:Motivated by questions arising in signal processing, computational complexity, and other areas, we study the ranks and border ranks of symmetric tensors using geometric methods. We provide improved lower bounds for the rank of a symmetric tensor (i.e., a homogeneous polynomial) obtained by considering the singularities of the hypersurface defined by the polynomial. We obtain normal forms for polynomials of border rank up to five, and compute or bound the ranks of several classes of polynomials, including monomials, the determinant, and the permanent.

Abstract:We consider the problem of determining the symmetric tensor rank for symmetric tensors with an algebraic geometry approach. We give algorithms for computing the symmetric rank for $2\times ... \times 2$ tensors and for tensors of small border rank. From a geometric point of view, we describe the symmetric rank strata for some secant varieties of Veronese varieties.

Abstract:We give the stratification by the symmetric tensor rank of all degree $d \ge 9$ homogeneous polynomials with border rank $5$ and which depend essentially on at least 5 variables, extending previous works (A. Bernardi, A. Gimigliano, M. Idà, E. Ballico) on lower border ranks. For the polynomials which depend on at least 5 variables only 5 ranks are possible: $5$, $d+3$, $2d+1$, $3d-1$, $4d-3$, but each of the ranks $3d-1$ and $2d+1$ is achieved in two geometrically different situations. These ranks are uniquely determined by a certain degree 5 zero-dimensional scheme $A$ associated to the polynomial. The polynomial $f$ depends essentially on at least 5 variables if and only if $A$ is linearly independent (in all cases $f$ essentially depends on exactly 5 variables). The polynomial has rank $4d-3$ (resp $3d-1$, resp. $2d+1$, resp. $d+3$, resp. $5$) if $A$ has $1$ (resp. $2$, resp. $3$, resp. $4$, resp. $5$) connected components. The assumption $d\ge 9$ guarantees that each polynomial has a uniquely determined associated scheme $A$. In each case we describe the dimension of the families of the polynomials with prescribed rank, each irreducible family being determined by the degrees of the connected components of the associated scheme $A$.

Abstract:We study the tensor rank of the tensor corresponding to the algebra of n-variate complex polynomials modulo the dth power of each variable. As a result we find a sequence of tensors with a large gap between rank and border rank, and thus a counterexample to a conjecture of Rhodes. At the same time we obtain a new lower bound on the tensor rank of tensor powers of the generalised W-state tensor. In addition, we exactly determine the tensor rank of the tensor cube of the three-party W-state tensor, thus answering a question of Chen et al.

Using a fragmentation technique, we characterise (h+1) ‐tuples (R1,⋯,Rh,R) of non‐empty families of partitions of {1,⋯,d} such that it suffices that an order‐d tensor has bounded Ri ‐rank for each i=1,⋯,h for it to have bounded R ‐rank. On the way, we prove power lower bounds on suitable products of diagonal tensors, providing a qualitative answer to a question of Naslund.

Abstract:One of the fundamental open problems in the field of tensors is the border Comon's conjecture: given a symmetric tensor $F\in(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes d}$ for $d\geq 3$, its border and symmetric border ranks are equal. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for large classes of concise tensors in $(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes d}$ of border rank $n$, i.e., tensors of minimal border rank. These families include all tame tensors and all tensors whenever $n\leq d+1$. Our technical tools are border apolarity and border varieties of sums of powers.

Abstract:We determine defining equations for the set of concise tensors of minimal border rank in $C^m\otimes C^m\otimes C^m$ when $m=5$ and the set of concise minimal border rank $1_*$-generic tensors when $m=5,6$. We solve this classical problem in algebraic complexity theory with the aid of two recent developments: the 111-equations defined by Buczyńska-Buczyński and results of Jelisiejew-Šivic on the variety of commuting matrices. We introduce a new algebraic invariant of a concise tensor, its 111-algebra, and exploit it to give a strengthening of Friedland's normal form for $1$-degenerate tensors satisfying Strassen's equations. We use the 111-algebra to characterize wild minimal border rank tensors and classify them in $C^5\otimes C^5\otimes C^5$.

A Gap in the Subrank of Tensors

Abstract:The subrank of tensors is a measure of how much a tensor can be ''diagonalized''. This parameter was introduced by Strassen to study fast matrix multiplication algorithms in algebraic complexity theory and is closely related to many central tensor parameters (e.g. slice rank, partition rank, analytic rank, geometric rank, G-stable rank) and problems in combinatorics, computer science and quantum information theory. Strassen (J. Reine Angew. Math., 1988) proved that there is a gap in the subrank when taking large powers under the tensor product: either the subrank of all powers is at most one, or it grows as a power of a constant strictly larger than one. In this paper, we precisely determine this constant for tensors of any order. Additionally, for tensors of order three, we prove that there is a second gap in the possible rates of growth. Our results strengthen the recent work of Costa and Dalai (J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A, 2021), who proved a similar gap for the slice rank. Our theorem on the subrank has wider applications by implying such gaps not only for the slice rank, but for any ``normalized monotone''. In order to prove the main result, we characterize when a tensor has a very structured tensor (the W-tensor) in its orbit closure. Our methods include degenerations in Grassmanians, which may be of independent interest.

Border Ranks of Positive and Invariant Tensor Decompositions: Applications to Correlations

Abstract:The matrix rank and its positive versions are robust for small approximations, i.e. they do not decrease under small perturbations. In contrast, the multipartite tensor rank can collapse for arbitrarily small errors, i.e. there may be a gap between rank and border rank, leading to instabilities in the optimization over sets with fixed tensor rank. Can multipartite positive ranks also collapse for small perturbations? In this work, we prove that multipartite positive and invariant tensor decompositions exhibit gaps between rank and border rank, including tensor rank purifications and cyclic separable decompositions. We also prove a correspondence between positive decompositions and membership in certain sets of multipartite probability distributions, and leverage the gaps between rank and border rank to prove that these correlation sets are not closed. It follows that testing membership of probability distributions arising from resources like translational invariant Matrix Product States is impossible in finite time. Overall, this work sheds light on the instability of ranks and the unique behavior of bipartite systems.

Border rank bounds for $GL(V)$-invariant tensors arising from matrices of constant rank

Abstract:We prove border rank bounds for a class of $GL(V)$-invariant tensors in $V^*\otimes U\otimes W$, where $U$ and $W$ are $GL(V)$-modules. These tensors correspond to spaces of matrices of constant rank. In particular we prove lower bounds for tensors in $\mathbb{C}^l\otimes\mathbb{C}^m\otimes\mathbb{C}^n$ that are not $1_A$-generic, where no nontrivial bounds were known, and also when $l,m\ll n$, where previously only bounds for unbalanced matrix multiplication tensors were known. We give the first explicit use of Young flattenings for tensors beyond Koszul to obtain border rank lower bounds, and determine the border rank of three tensors.

Abstract:We study the case of a real homogeneous polynomial $P$ whose minimal real and complex decompositions in terms of powers of linear forms are different. We prove that, if the sum of the complex and the real ranks of $P$ is at most $ 3°(P)-1$, then the difference of the two decompositions is completely determined either on a line or on a conic or two disjoint lines.

Abstract:It is shown that the relative distance in Frobenius norm of a real symmetric order-$d$ tensor of rank two to its best rank-one approximation is upper bounded by $\sqrt{1-(1-1/d)^{d-1}}$. This is achieved by determining the minimal possible ratio between spectral and Frobenius norm for symmetric tensors of border rank two, which equals $\left(1-{1}/{d}\right)^{(d-1)/{2}}$. These bounds are also verified for arbitrary real rank-two tensors by reducing to the symmetric case.

Abstract:In this paper we study typical ranks of real $m\times n \times \ell$ tensors. In the case $ (m-1)(n-1)+1 \leq \ell \leq mn$ the typical ranks are contained in $\{\ell, \ell +1\}$, and $\ell$ is always a typical rank. We provide a geometric proof of this fact. We express the probabilities of these ranks in terms of the probabilities of the numbers of intersection points of a random linear space with the Segre variety. In addition, we give some heuristics to understand how the probabilities of these ranks behave, based on asymptotic results on the average number of real points in a random linear slice of a Segre variety with a subspace of complementary dimension. The typical ranks of real $3\times 3\times 5$ tensors are $5$ and $6$. We link the rank probabilities of a $3\times 3 \times 5$ tensor with i.i.d.\ Gaussian entries to the probability of a random cubic surface in $¶^3$ having real lines. As a consequence, we get a bound on the expected number of real lines on such a surface.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the notion of singular vector tuples of a complex valued $d$-mode tensor of dimension m_1 x ... x m_d. We show that a generic tensor has a finite number of singular vector tuples, viewed as points in the corresponding Segre product. We give the formula for the number of singular vector tuples. We show similar results for tensors with partial symmetry. We give analogous results for the homogeneous pencil eigenvalue problem for cubic tensors, i.e. m_1=...=m_d. We show uniqueness of best approximations for almost all real tensors in the following cases: rank one approximation; rank one approximation for partially symmetric tensors (this approximation is also partially symmetric); rank-(r_1,...,r_d) approximation for $d$-mode tensors.

Abstract:Motivated by problems in algebraic complexity theory (e.g., matrix multiplication) and extremal combinatorics (e.g., the cap set problem and the sunflower problem), we introduce the geometric rank as a new tool in the study of tensors and hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is an upper bound on the subrank of tensors and the independence number of hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is smaller than the slice rank of Tao, and relate geometric rank to the analytic rank of Gowers and Wolf in an asymptotic fashion. As a first application, we use geometric rank to prove a tight upper bound on the (border) subrank of the matrix multiplication tensors, matching Strassen's well-known lower bound from 1987.
Higher-degree symmetric rank-metric codes

Abstract:Over fields of characteristic unequal to $2$, we can identify symmetric matrices with homogeneous polynomials of degree $2$. This allows us to view symmetric rank-metric codes as living inside the space of such polynomials. In this paper, we generalize the construction of symmetric Gabidulin codes to polynomials of degree $d>2$ over field of characteristic $0$ or $>d$. To do so, we equip the space of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d\geq 2$ with the metric induced by the essential rank, which is the minimal number of linear forms needed to express a polynomial. We provide bounds on the minimal distance and dimension of the essential-rank metric codes we construct and provide an efficient decoding algorithm. Finally, we show how essential-rank metric codes can be seen as special instances of rank-metric codes and compare our construction to known rank-metric codes with the same parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, we first introduce the invertibility of even-order tensors and the separable tensors, including separable symmetry tensors and separable anti-symmetry tensors, defined respectively as the sum and the algebraic sum of rank-1 tensors generated by the tensor product of some vectors, say, $v_{1}, v_{2}, \ldots, v_{m}$. We show that the $m!$ sumrands, each in form $v_{\sigma(1)}\times v_{\sigma(2)}\times\ldots\times v_{\sigma(m)}$, are linearly independent if $v_{1},v_{2}, \ldots, v_{m}$ are linearly independent, where $\sigma$ is any permutation on $\set{1,2,\ldots,m}$. We offer a class of tensors to achieve the upper bound for $\rank(A) \leq 6$ for all $A\in R^{3\times 3\times 3}$. We also show that each $3\times 3\times 3$ anti-symmetric tensor is separable.

For a semialgebraic subset of $A \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and a vector subspace $\mathcal{H} \subset \mathcal{H}_{n,d}$, we define a PSD cone $\mathcal{P}(A$, $\mathcal{H})$ by $\mathcal{P}(A$, $\mathcal{H}) := \big\{f \in \mathcal{H}$ $\big|$ $f(a) \geq 0$ ($\forall a \in A$)$\big\}$. In this article, we study a family of extremal symmetric polynomials of $\mathcal{P}_{3,6} := \mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}^3$, $\mathcal{H}_{3,6})$ and that of $\mathcal{P}_{4,4} := \mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}^4$, $\mathcal{H}_{4,4})$. We also determine all the extremal polynomials of $\mathcal{P}_{3,5}^{s+} := \mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}_+^3$, $\mathcal{H}_{3,5}^s)$ where $\mathbb{R}_+ := \big\{ x \in \mathbb{R}$, $x \geq 0 \big\}$. Some of them provide extremal polynomials of $\mathcal{P}_{3,10}$.

Abstract:We give a self-contained classification of $1_*$-generic minimal border rank tensors in $C^m \otimes C^m \otimes C^m$ for $m \leq 5$. Together with previous results, this gives a classification of all minimal border rank tensors in $C^m \otimes C^m \otimes C^m$ for $m \leq 5$: there are $37$ isomorphism classes. We fully describe possible degenerations among the tensors. We prove that there are no $1$-degenerate minimal border rank tensors in $C^m \otimes C^m \otimes C^m $ for $m \leq 4$.
