Abstract:Flexible and wearable strain/pressure sensors are of extraordinary interest in underwater applications such as underwater motion monitoring and marine environmental exploration. With tunable mechanical properties, biocompatibility and multifunctional characteristics, gel can be structurally designed and network cross-linked to obtain excellent swelling resistance in underwater environments, making them one of the most promising materials for constructing strain/pressure sensors for underwater applications. However, the complex underwater environment and different application scenarios put higher demands on the sensing sensitivity and accuracy of gel sensors. In recent years, gel sensors with multifunctional underwater properties have been developed to ensure long-term stable sensing underwater. In this review we first summarized the sensing mechanism of gel-based underwater strain/pressure sensors, and then summarized the strategy for designing gel sensors with multifunctional underwater characteristics by analyzing the relationship between different functional characteristics and sensing parameters. According to the development trend in recent years, we summarized the common application fields for underwater strain/pressure gel sensors. Finally, we presented our views on the challenges of building underwater gel sensors in the future, with the expectation of providing useful insights for the design and development of next-generation underwater strain/pressure sensors.

Abstract:Mechanosensing, the transduction of extracellular mechanical stimuli into intracellular biochemical signals, is a fundamental property of living cells. However, endowing synthetic materials with mechanosensing capabilities comparable to biological levels is challenging. Here, we developed ultrasensitive and robust mechanoluminescent living composites using hydrogels embedded with dinoflagellates, unicellular microalgae with a near-instantaneous and ultrasensitive bioluminescent response to mechanical stress. Not only did embedded dinoflagellates retain their intrinsic mechanoluminescence, but with hydrophobic coatings, living composites had a lifetime of ~5 months under harsh conditions with minimal maintenance. We 3D-printed living composites into large-scale mechanoluminescent structures with high spatial resolution, and we also enhanced their mechanical properties with double-network hydrogels. We propose a counterpart mathematical model that captured experimental mechanoluminescent observations to predict mechanoluminescence based on deformation and applied stress. We also demonstrated the use of the mechanosensing composites for biomimetic soft actuators that emitted colored light upon magnetic actuation. These mechanosensing composites have substantial potential in biohybrid sensors and robotics.

Abstract:Smart flexible electronics with underwater motion detection have become a promising research aspect in intelligent perception. Inspired by the strong adaptability of marine creatures to complex underwater environments, conventional biocompatible hydrogels are worth developing into organogels with preferred underwater adhesive properties, hydrophobic and antiswelling performance, and motion perception ability. Herein, a highly sensitive organogel sensor exhibiting good hydrophobicity, electromechanical properties, and adhesion properties was prepared for underwater utilization by regulating the chemical components and internal interactions. The synergistic effect of massive reversible non-covalent bonds ensures the organogel's excellent underwater adhesion to multifarious substrates. Meanwhile, the interactions of hydrophobic conductive fillers and the dynamic hydrophobic associations in the organogel endow it with satisfactory hydrophobic performance (contact angle of 111.8°) and antiswelling property (equilibrium swelling ratio of −31% after 15-day immersion). The fabricated flexible organogel strain sensor exhibits high sensitivity (gauge factor of 1.96), ultrafast response rate (79.1 ms), low limit of detection (0.45 Pa), and excellent cyclic stability (1044 tensile cycles followed by 3981 compressive cycles). Results demonstrate the proposed organogel's precise perception of sophisticated human motions in air and underwater, which expands its application scenarios.

Abstract:In the present work, sensing functionalities are introduced into structural composites via embedded magnetic microwires. A systematic study on the structure and functionalities of microwires and their composites is performed. The single-wire composite shows a significant giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect of up to 320% in a frequency range of 1–100MHz due to stress enhanced transverse magneto-anisotropy. With increasing quantities of embedded wires from 1 to 3, the maximum GMI ratio is enhanced significantly by more than 35%, making the resultant composite favourable for field sensing applications. The microwire-composite also shows superior stress-sensing resolution as high as 134.5kHz/microstrain, which is about 26 times higher than the recently proposed SRR-based sensor. As evidenced by the structural examination and tensile tests, the extremely small volume fraction of microwires (∼0.01vol.%) allows the wire-composites to retain their mechanical integrity and performance.

Abstract:Multifunctional composites realized by embedded sensing materials draw much attention to structural health monitoring applications. However, conventional composites are not able to recognize their strain behavior, meanwhile, the embedded sensing elements lack compatibility with host structures and inevitably cause the degradation of the properties. Herein, flexible and micro magnetic fibers (MFs) as embedded sensing units enable conventional composites to possess intelligent self-sensing ability. Combining impedance measurement with mechanical test, the sensing mechanism of MFs is elucidated that the stress-sensitivity of MFs derives from the natural ferromagnetic resonance induced by its intrinsic magnetic anisotropy. The uniaxial tensile and cyclic loading are executed to investigate the electromechanical response ability and monitoring stability of MF monofilament as a sensing element. Then, MFs are embedded into glass fiber (GF) reinforced composites to realize multi-functional MF/GF composites with self-sensing capability, which also do not deteriorate their original mechanical properties. The MF/GF composites inherit high strain sensitivity with a maximum gauge factor of 376, and simultaneously exhibit the ability of bending orientation recognition and damage detection. The MF as a low invasive and embedded functional fiber has great potential to realize self-sensing ability of fiber-reinforced composites, which find particular priority application in pressure vessels and pipes.
A Universal Interfacial Strategy Enabling Ultra‐Robust Gel Hybrids for Extreme Epidermal Bio‐Monitoring

Abstract:This study demonstrates a surfactant mediated interfacial chemistry to achieve seamless and tough interfaces in soft multi‐layer structures, which inspires a series of ultra‐robust gel hybrid based mechano‐sensors for epidermal bio‐monitoring in a wide range of conditions, i.e., open air, underwater, various solvents, and temperatures. A seamless and tough interface to integrate incompatible/immiscible soft materials is highly desired for flexible/wearable electronics and many soft devices with multi‐layer structures. Here, a surfactant‐mediated interfacial chemistry is introduced to achieve seamless and tough interfaces in soft multi‐layer structures, with an ultra‐high interfacial toughness up to ≈1300 J m−2 for the architectural gel hybrid (AGH). The reversible noncovalent interfacial interactions efficiently dissipate energy at the interface, thereby providing excellent durability. The interfacial toughness only decreases by ≈6.9% after 10 000 tensile cycles. This strategy can be universally applied to hybrid systems with various interfaces between an interior hydrogel (PAA, PVA, PAAm, and gelatin) and an exterior hydrophobic soft matter (ionogel, lipogel and elastomer). The AGH‐based mechano‐sensor presents high robustness and stability in a wide range of conditions, including open air, underwater, and various solvents and temperatures. Epidermal bio‐monitoring, tactile trajectory, and facial expression recognition are demonstrated using the AGH sensors in various environments. A rich set of electrophysiological signals of high quality are acquired.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have a remarkable potential for applications in soft electronics and robotics, owing to their noteworthy attributes, including electrical conductivity, stretchability, biocompatibility, etc. However, the limited strength and toughness of these hydrogels have traditionally impeded their practical implementation. Inspired by the hierarchical architecture of high-performance biological composites found in nature, we successfully fabricate a robust and sensitive conductive nanocomposite hydrogel through self-assembly–induced bridge cross-linking of MgB 2 nanosheets and polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels. By combining the hierarchical lamellar microstructure with robust molecular B─O─C covalent bonds, the resulting conductive hydrogel exhibits an exceptional strength and toughness. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrates exceptional sensitivity (response/relaxation time, 20 milliseconds; detection lower limit, ~1 Pascal) under external deformation. Such characteristics enable the conductive hydrogel to exhibit superior performance in soft sensing applications. This study introduces a high-performance conductive hydrogel and opens up exciting possibilities for the development of soft electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogel-based sensors are increasingly favored for flexible electronics due to their skin-like characteristics. However, conventional hydrogels suffer from significant swelling in humid environments and poor mechanical properties which largely restrict their applications in wearable electronic devices, especially for underwater sensing. Herein, drawing inspiration from the extracellular matrix (ECM) structure, a TPU-PVAc@AgNPs/MXene nanofibrous hydrogel composite (TPAMH) with excellent mechanical robustness and anti-swelling properties is developed. The TPAMH nanofibrous hydrogel composite is created by integrating the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and MXene nanosheets into an interwoven network comprising of stiff TPU nanofibers as fibril scaffold and formic acid-crosslinked PVA hydrogel fibers as the elastic matrix (PVAc). Benefiting from the unique ECM structure, the obtained nanofibrous hydrogel composites exhibit exceptional tensile strength (4.47 MPa), remarkable elongation at break (621%), excellent anti-swelling property, and high detection sensitivity (maximum gauge factor = 105.02), which are sufficient to monitor body motions in both air and water environments effectively. They can detect large strain movements of fingers, elbows, wrists, and knees, as well as small strain physiological signals such as frown, smile, and pulse beats, with high accuracy. Particularly noteworthy is their ability to accurately identify underwater multidirectional motions and facilitate underwater smart alarms using Morse code.

Abstract:Conductive gels have been extensively explored in the field of wearable electronics due to their excellent flexibility and deformability. Traditional gels constructed from synthetic networks pose risks to biosecurity due to residual monomers like acrylamide, while pure biological hydrogels are plagued by inadequate mechanical performance. This study explores an innovative strategy, employing a dual-network (DN) system with purely biological components, as a superior alternative to conventional synthetic networks. By integrating gelatin and chitosan, two natural polymers with inherent biocompatibility and advantageous biomedical properties, this approach successfully avoids the toxic risk of synthetic polymers. By utilizing emodin, a natural extract from Rheum officinale, as a cross-linking agent for chitosan by Schiff base reactions, and Hofmeister effect of gelatin induced by sodium carbonate, the DN gelatin/chitosan/emodin organohydrogels achieve ultrahigh tensile strength (up to 9.45 MPa), tunable moduli (ranging from 0.07 to 3.42 MPa), excellent toughness (∼9.64 MJ/m3), and high ionic conductivity (7.63 mS/cm). Remarkably, these conductive organohydrogels also exhibit high sensitivity (gauge factor up to 1.5) and ultrahigh linearity (R2 up to 0.9995), making them promising candidates for soft human-motion sensors capable of accurately detecting and monitoring human movements in real time with high sensitivity and durability.

Abstract:Integration of both excellent mechanical performance and remarkable durability into composite hydrogel materials is highly demanded yet challenging. Herein, a synergistic strategy of combining covalent crosslinks with nanosheet-reinforced dynamic interactions is developed for the design and fabrication of deformable and recoverable nanocomposite hydrogels. Layered double hydroxide nanosheets and a trace amount of covalent crosslinks are simultaneously incorporated into the network, providing profound synergy in mechanical enhancement and durability extension. The resultant materials displayed high deformability (stretchability >1100%, compressibility >90%), considerable springiness and resilience, rapid and excellent recovery over 2000 cycles of compression and retraction as well as a 100% hysteresis ratio after only 1 min during large stretching. Notably, these networks are also transparent and ionically conductive. To demonstrate the utility, a wearable strain sensor is constructed for sensing and detecting human motions (e.g., subtle movement of mouth-opening and large motion of joint-bending), exhibiting a linear response with high sensitivity (gauge factor as high as 7.66) over 100-300% strain. This line of research will inspire renewed interest and work into synergic exploitation of nanospecies-reinforced interactions and covalent crosslinks into the design of high-performance composite materials.

Abstract:The emerging soft electronics and robots are eagerly seeking for soft materials possessing not only comprehensive mechanical properties but also smart stimuli-responsive property, whose fabrication however remains a great challenge. Herein, we develop a series of high-performance smart hydrogels crosslinked and reinforced by an organic-inorganic hybridized crosslinker composed of multi-functional polymer adsorbed molybdenum disulfide (v-MoS2). The multi-functional polymer is synthesized by grafting polyethyleneimine with multiple vinyl groups. Such molecular design enables it to serve as a surfactant to assist the exfoliation and stabilization of v-MoS2 nanosheets through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, thereby forming the hybridized crosslinker to crosslink polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogels through both chemical bonds and physical interactions. The crosslinking points can effectively transfer load between the molecular chains and v-MoS2, and moreover dissipate energy through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. Therefore, the hydrogels not only are mechanically robust with tensile strain up to 3500% and strength up to 645 kPa, but also show outstanding notch-insensitivity and anti-fatigue property. Combining with the photothermal effect of MoS2, robust biomimetic fish and butterfly with dual photoresponsivity and thermosensitivity are designed, which can well mimic the self-defense process of marine and terrestrial organisms under external stimulations.

Abstract:Thermosensitive hydrogels have found extensive applications in soft devices, but they often suffer from limited functionalities, low response rate and small response amplitude. In this work, double layered asymmetrical hydrogels composed of a thermosensitive layer and a non-thermosensitive layer are developed to simultaneously achieve high-performance mechanosensing and actuating properties in a single hydrogel. In thermosensitive layer, thermosensitive microgels are introduced to construct hierarchical structure, which accounts for the enhanced thermosensitive behaviors by cooperative responsiveness. In non-thermosensitive layer, poly(acrylamide- co -acrylic acid) (P(AM- co -AA)) hydrogel is constructed. KCl is introduced as conductive component. Mechanosensors for monitoring various mechanical stimuli in daily life have been fabricated utilizing such hydrogels and high gauge factors (GF) have been achieved, 0.38 for resistive strain sensors, 9.40 kPa −1 for piezoresistive pressure sensors and 3.92 kPa −1 for capacitive pressure sensors. Because of the asymmetrical structure, such hydrogels also exhibit outstanding actuating properties with a fast response rate of 863°/min and a bending amplitude about 360°. Interestingly, grasping-releasing of target objects utilizing an octopus-shaped hydrogel actuator and temperature alerting based on hydrogel actuator are also demonstrated. Overall, the double layered asymmetrical ionic hydrogels have provided a new clue to construct hydrogel devices with multiple functionalities and enhanced response properties.

Abstract:Conducting polymer hydrogels are widely used as strain sensors in light of their distinct skin‐like softness, strain sensitivity, and environmental adaptiveness in the fields of wearable devices, soft robots, and human‐machine interface. However, the mechanical and electrical properties of existing conducting polymer hydrogels, especially fatigue‐resistance and sensing robustness during long‐term application, are unsatisfactory, which severely hamper their practical utilities. Herein, a strategy to fabricate conducting polymer hydrogels with anisotropic structures and mechanics is presented through a combined freeze‐casting and salting‐out process. The as‐fabricated conducting polymer hydrogels exhibit high fatigue threshold (>300 J m−2), low Young's modulus (≈100 kPa), as well as long‐term strain sensing robustness (over 10 000 cycles). Such superior performance enables their application as strain sensors to monitor the real‐time movement of underwater robotics. The design and fabrication strategy for conducting polymer hydrogels reported in this study may open up an enticing avenue for functional soft materials in soft electronics and robotics.

Here, a highly stretchable, sensitive, and multifunctional polysaccharide-based dual-network hydrogel sensor was constructed using dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose (DCMC), chitosan (CS), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and aluminum ions (Al3+). The obtained DCMC/CS/PAA (DCP) composite hydrogels exhibit robust mechanical strength and good adhesive and self-healing properties, due to the reversible dynamic chemical bonds and physical interactions such as Schiff base bonds and metal coordination. The conductivity of hydrogel is 2.6 S/m, and the sensitivity (gauge factor (GF)) is up to 15.56. Notably, the DCP hydrogel shows excellent underwater repeatable adhesion to animal tissues and good self-healing properties in water (self-healing rate > 90%, self-healing time < 10 min). The DCP hydrogel strain sensor can sensitively monitor human motion including finger bending, smiling, and wrist pulse, and it can steadily detect human movement underwater. This work is expected to provide a new strategy for the design of high-performance intelligent sensors, particularly for applications in wet and underwater environments.

Abstract:Gel with satisfactory mechanical performance and reliability have received tremendous attention for their application. In this study, an elaborately designed dual cross-linked polyacrylamide/chitosan (PAM/CS) composite gel containing hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds was prepared by introducing phytic acid and cobalt ions into gel. During the preparation process, the oxidative polymerization and free water evaporation proceed simultaneously to obtain the gel by a water bath heating process. The PAM/CS gels possess excellent stretchability (∼3630%), self-adhesiveness, self-healing properties as well as self-extinguishing. Notably, the gel (PAM/CS-II) remains high strain after being placed for one month (0.22 MPa, 1022%) and even after heating or under the cold environment, demonstrating a long-term stability at room temperature and an extraordinary flexibility under a wide temperature spectrum. Extraordinary comprehensive properties can offer substantial benefit to their application, life span and security. PAM/CS-II gel can be directly employed as a strain sensor to evaluate the human motions, such as the subtle motion of the face and laryngeal knot. The human motions had been accurately detected with short response time by the strain sensor. This study strongly contributes to the strategy for the preparation and application for gel.

Abstract:Flexible wearable sensors are of interest for underwater applications such as aquatic robots and marine exploration. Non‐swelling hydrogels would be a preferable candidate for underwater sensing with stable sensing performance. Herein, hydrogels comprised of MXene and polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate (PHEMA) are designed and manufactured. Owing to the synergistic effect of phase separation zones and hydrophilic/hydrophobic interaction, MXene/PHEMA hydrogels exhibit non‐swelling performance in various liquid media (e.g., water, seawater) and effectively avoid the adhesion of proteins and bacteria. In addition, MXene/PHEMA hydrogels exhibit a large sensing range (more than 400%), high tensile strength (0.54 MPa), and skin‐compliance modulus (120 kPa). Furthermore, the resulted hydrogel‐based sensors possess superior sensibility (4.42 at 150–450% strain), fast responsiveness (200 ms), and durable sensing ability (over 1000 cycles). The hydrogel‐based sensors can accurately monitor human motions (both large and subtle motions) in air and in various liquid media. Benefiting from the non‐swelling and anti‐fouling ability, the hydrogels could maintain high mechanical strength and cyclic stability after being immersed in water for 30 days, and precisely detect the movement of human and shark models underwater. It is conceivable that non‐swelling and anti‐fouling MXene/PHEMA hydrogels provide a feasible material to construct electronic skins for various harsh liquid environments. Nanocomposite hydrogels comprised of MXene and polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate are prepared by in situ polymerization. The synergistic effect of phase separation zones and hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions enables the hydrogel non‐swelling performance in various media. Besides, hydration layers avoid the formation of biofouling films on the hydrogel. These edges endow hydrogel‐based sensors to detect underwater movements with long‐term stability.
