Abstract:We establish a criterion that implies the acylindrical hyperbolicity of many Artin groups admitting a visual splitting. This gives a variety of new examples of acylindrically hyperbolic Artin groups, including many Artin groups of FC-type. Our approach relies on understanding when parabolic subgroups are weakly malnormal in a given Artin group. We formulate a conjecture for when this happens, and prove it for several classes of Artin groups, including all spherical-type, all two-dimensional, and all even FC-type Artin groups. In addition, we establish some connections between several conjectures about Artin groups, related to questions of acylindrical hyperbolicity, weak malnormality of parabolic subgroups, and intersections of parabolic subgroups.

Abstract:We generalize the retractions to standard parabolic subgroups for even Artin groups to FC-type Artin groups and other more general families. We prove that these retractions uniquely extend to any parabolic subgroup. We use retractions to generalize the results of Antolín and Foniqi that reduce the problem of intersection of parabolic subgroups to weaker conditions. As a corollary, we characterize coherence for the FC case.

Abstract:In this paper, we define the 2-complete Artin complex and show that it is systolic for locally reducible Artin groups. The stabilizers of simplices in this complex are exactly the proper parabolic subgroups which are "2-complete." We use this systolicity to show that parabolic subgroups, with 2-completions that are not the whole Artin group, are weakly malnormal. This allows us to conclude that many locally reducible Artin groups are acylindrically hyperbolic.

Abstract:We continue the study of the retraction from an Artin group to a standard parabolic subgroup introduced by Blufstein, Charney, Paris and the second author. Using right and left retractions we obtain new results on minimal parabolic subgroups, intersection of parabolic subgroups, double cosets with respect to parabolic subgroups and conjugacy classes in Artin groups.

Abstract:We prove a general combination theorem for discrete subgroups of $\mathrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ preserving properly convex open subsets in the projective space $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, in the spirit of Klein and Maskit. We use it in particular to prove that a free product of two $(\mathbb{Z}$-)linear groups is again ($\mathbb{Z}$-)linear, and to construct Zariski-dense discrete subgroups of $\mathrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ which are not lattices but contain a lattice of a smaller higher-rank simple Lie group. We also establish a version of our combination theorem for discrete groups that are convex cocompact in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ in the sense of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1704.08711" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.08711">arXiv:1704.08711</a>. In particular, we prove that a free product of two convex cocompact groups is convex cocompact, which implies that the free product of two Anosov groups is Anosov. We also prove a virtual amalgamation theorem over convex cocompact subgroups generalizing work of Baker-Cooper.

Random groups arising as graph products

Abstract:In this paper we study the hyperbolicity properties of a class of random groups arising as graph products associated to random graphs. Recall, that the construction of a graph product is a generalization of the constructions of right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups. We adopt the Erdos - Renyi model of a random graph and find precise threshold functions for the hyperbolicity (or relative hyperbolicity). We aslo study automorphism groups of right-angled Artin groups associated to random graphs. We show that with probability tending to one as $n\to \infty$, random right-angled Artin groups have finite outer automorphism groups, assuming that the probability parameter $p$ is constant and satisfies $0.2929 <p<1$.

Abstract:We generalize to (certain) Artin groups some results previously known for right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs). First, we generalize a result by Droms, B. Servatius, and H. Servatius, and prove that the derived subgroup of an Artin group is free if and only if the group is coherent. Second, coherent Artin groups over non complete graphs split as free amalgamated products along free abelian subgroups, and we extend to arbitrary Artin groups admitting such a splitting a recent result by Casals-Ruiz and the first author on finitely generated normal subgroups of RAAGs. Finally, we use splittings of even Artin groups of FC-type to generalize results of Minasyan and Osin on acylindrical hyperbolicity of their subgroups.

Strongly convergent unitary representations of right-angled Artin groups

Abstract:We prove using a novel random matrix model that all right-angled Artin groups have a sequence of finite dimensional unitary representations that strongly converge to the regular representation. We deduce that this result applies also to: the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic manifold that is either three dimensional or standard arithmetic type, any Coxeter group, and any word-hyperbolic cubulated group. One strong consequence of these results is that any closed hyperbolic three-manifold has a sequence of finite dimensional flat Hermitian vector bundles with bottom of the spectrum of the Laplacian asymptotically at least 1.

Abstract:Let G be a group and H be a subgroup of G. We say that H is left relatively convex in G if the left G-set G/H has at least one G-invariant order; when G is left orderable, this holds if and only if H is convex in G under some left ordering of G. We give a criterion for H to be left relatively convex in G that generalizes a famous theorem of Burns and Hale and has essentially the same proof. We show that all maximal cyclic subgroups are left relatively convex in free groups, in right-angled Artin groups, and in surface groups that are not the Klein-bottle group. The free-group case extends a result of Duncan and Howie. We show that if G is left orderable, then each free factor of G is left relatively convex in G. More generally, for any graph of groups, if each edge group is left relatively convex in each of its vertex groups, then each vertex group is left relatively convex in the fundamental group; this generalizes a result of Chiswell. We show that all maximal cyclic subgroups in locally residually torsion-free nilpotent groups are left relatively convex.

Abstract:We establish a concavity principle for solutions to elliptic and parabolic equations on complex projective space, generalizing the results of Langford and Scheuer. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a general concavity principle outside the constant sectional curvature regime, and in particular, our result partially answers a question raised by Korevaar in 1985 regarding the concavity of solutions to elliptic equations on manifolds with non-constant sectional curvature.

Abstract:We study the acylindrical hyperbolicity of the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group $A_\Gamma$. When the defining graph $\Gamma$ has no SIL-pair (separating intersection of links), we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for $\mathrm{Out}(A_\Gamma)$ to be acylindrically hyperbolic. As a corollary, if $\Gamma$ is a random connected graph satisfying a certain probabilistic condition, then $\mathrm{Out}(A_\Gamma)$ is not acylindrically hyperbolic with high probability. When $\Gamma$ has a maximal SIL-pair system, we derive a classification theorem for partial conjugations. Such a classification theorem allows us to show that the acylindrical hyperbolicity of $\mathrm{Out}(A_\Gamma)$ is closely related to the existence of a specific type of partial conjugations.

Abstract:We prove that every right-angled Artin group occurs as a finite-index subgroup of the outer automorphism group of another right-angled Artin group. We furthermore show that the latter group can be chosen in such a way that the quotient is isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^N$ for some $N$. For these, we give explicit constructions using the group of pure symmetric outer automorphisms. Moreover, we need two conditions by Day-Wade and Wade-Brück about when this group is a right-angled Artin group and when it has finite index.

Abstract:Charney and Morris-Wright showed acylindrical hyperbolicity of Artin groups of infinite type associated with graphs that are not joins, by studying clique-cube complexes and the actions on them. The authors developed their study and clarified when acylindrical hyperbolicity holds for Artin groups of infinite type associated with graphs that are not cones. In this paper, we introduce reduced clique-cube complexes. By using them, we show acylindrical hyperbolicity of irreducible Artin groups associated with graphs that are not cliques, that is, irreducible Artin groups that are not free of infinity. Such Artin groups contain infinite type Artin groups of type FC. As an application, we see that the centers of such Artin groups are finite, and that actually they are trivial in many cases.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of normal subgroups of mapping class groups that are isomorphic to non-free right-angled Artin groups. Our construction also gives normal, non-free right-angled Artin subgroups of other groups, such as braid groups and pure braid groups, as well as many subgroups of the mapping class group, such as the Torelli subgroup. Our work recovers and generalizes the seminal result of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin, which gives free, purely pseudo-Anosov normal subgroups of mapping class groups. We give two applications of our methods: (1) we produce an explicit proper normal subgroup of the mapping class group that is not contained in any level $m$ congruence subgroup, and (2) we produce an explicit example of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class with the property that all of its even powers have free normal closure and its odd powers normally generate the entire mapping class group. The technical theorem at the heart of our work is a new version of the windmill apparatus of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin, which is tailored to the setting of group actions on the projection complexes of Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara.

Abstract:We show that in any right-angled Artin group whose defining graph has chromatic number $k$, every non-trivial element has stable commutator length at least $1/(6k)$. Secondly, if the defining graph does not contain triangles, then every non-trivial element has stable commutator length at least $1/20$. These results are obtained via an elementary geometric argument based on earlier work of Culler.

Abstract:We propose a criterion for preserving the regularity of a formal language representation when passing from groups to subgroups. We use this criterion to show that the regularity of a positive cone language in a left-orderable group passes to its finite index subgroups, and to show that there exists no left order on a finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic group such that the corresponding positive cone is represented by a quasi-geodesic regular language. We also answer one of Navas' questions by giving an example of an infinite family of groups which admit a positive cone that is generated by exactly $k$ generators, for every $k \geq 3$. As a special case of our construction, we obtain a finitely generated positive cone for $F_2 \times \mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the class of parabolically geometrically finite (PGF) subgroups of mapping class groups, introduced by Dowdall-Durham-Leininger-Sisto. We prove a combination theorem for graphs of PGF groups (and other generalizations) by utilizing subsurface projection to obtain control on the geometry of fundamental groups of graphs of PGF groups, generalizing and strengthening methods of Leininger-Reid. From this result, we construct new examples of PGF groups and provide methods for how to apply the combination theorem in practice. We also show that PGF groups are undistorted in their corresponding mapping class group.
