Abstract:We proposed a multilayered spatial optical differentiator designing method by use of the deep neural network (DNN). After trained for approximately 30 h, the DNN is able to predict the reflection coefficient of a 12-layer multilayer film with high fidelity (validation mean squared error < 2.4x10(-4)). As a useful example, a second-order spatial optical differentiator was then designed. Compared with the general optimization method, the machine learning could help to quickly generate a wavefront computing device at an about 6-times faster speed. The performance of the designed device is confirmed from the comparison with the theoretical ideal operation output. Another first-order spatial optical differentiator was also designed to validate the generality of the method. The results indicate that the DNN may have a bright future in designing devices capable of all kinds of complex time-space wavefront mathematical operation, in particular based on the multilayer material systems.
Optimized high-speed all-optical 2-bit ADCbased on two-dimensional photonic crystal nanoresonators

Abstract:In the present paper, a new 2-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) was designed and simulated by using 2D photonic crystal (PC) structures to create a relatively faster and smaller structure. For this purpose, a PC structure with a square lattice and silicon rods in the air bed was used. In the proposed structure, a combination of an optical filter with a linear waveguide, optical nanoresonators, and interference effects was used to create a 2-bit ADC. To create a structure in optimal conditions with maximum output optical power, the size of nanoresonators was scanned to reach the best size. The proposed structure operated at the operating wavelength of 1550 nm with a response time of about 1.63 ps, a sampling rate of about 613 GS/s, and a resolution sampling rate product (RSRP) value of about 2453 ks. Additionally, the size of the structure was about 194µm2, which is small compared with other structures proposed in this field; it also enjoys high simplicity and flexibility like structures with other functions, including 4-bit converters. The amount of power used to create different logic states was at the rate of mW/µm2, which is much lower than the amount used in similar structures and is achieved using nonlinear effects and materials. Therefore, due to the excellent results obtained, this structure is recommended to be used in optical integrated circuits. The plane wave expansion method was used to extract the photonic bandgap, and the finite-difference time-domain method was used to obtain the results related to the output spectrum of the designed structures.

Abstract:In this paper, we present novel designs for all optical analog-to-digital converters simulated and realized in photonic crystal platforms. The designs presented were implemented on both photonic bandgap based structures as well as self collimation based structures. Numerical simulation results as well as fabrication results are also included. Characterization results validate the designs presented for a functional all optical two bit analog to digital converters in photonic crystals. The design presented can be further scaled to higher resolution conversion as well as to no optical frequencies if necessary.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a 2-bit optical analog-to-digital (A/D) converter. This converter consists of three cascaded splitters constructed in a self-guiding photonic crystal through the perturbation of the uniform lattice. The A/D conversion is achieved by adjusting splitting ratios of the splitters through changing the degree of perturbation. In this way, output ports reach a state of '1' at different input power levels to generate unique states desired for an A/D converter. To validate this design concept, we first experimentally characterize the relation between the splitting ratio and the degree of lattice perturbation. Based on this understanding, we then fabricate the 2-bit A/D converter and successfully observe four unique states corresponding to different power levels of input analog signal. Abstract:In this paper, an all-optical analog-to-digital converter based on nonlinear with silicon materials is designed and simulated. The proposed structure consists of three nonlinear nanocavity that control the optical signal power intensity. The nonlinear material used is aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs). Aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) with a linear refractive index of n 0 = 1.4 and a nonlinear refractive index of n 2 = 1.5 × 10 − 17 . Due to the small path length of the waveguides, the optical signals move a short distance and as a result, the power optical losses along the path are reduced and on the other hand, the speed of the structure is increased. The transmission percentage is between 90% and 100%. The overall dimensions of the structure are 324 μm2. The plane wave expansion (PWE) method is used to calculate the band structure. The two-dimensional finite difference time domain (2D-FDTD) method is used to calculate the transmission power spectrum and the simulation results.

Abstract:In this paper, by integrating InP/InGaAsP/InP Photonic crystal semiconductor optical amplifier (PhC-SOA) with photonic crystal channel drop filters (PhC-CDF), we present a novel fully integrated ultra-small low-power all-optical analog to digital converter (AO-ADC). The self-phase modulation in the PhC-SOA can shift the frequency of the Gaussian input pulse. The two output PhC-CDFs are designed in a way that appropriately codes the frequency-shifted pulse by the PhC-SOA, which consequently converts them to four desired digital output levels. The numerical results indicated that the center wavelength of an amplitude modulated Gaussian pulse with a center wavelength of 1551.228 nm, temporal pulse-width of 10.6 ps, and energy of 74.4 fJ can be shifted by 1.652 nm. This shift is accommodated by utilizing a PhC-SOA with a length of 9 µm and an injection current of 6.5 mA. The shifted pulse is then quantized and coded to the four digital levels of (00, 01, 10, 11) by two point-defect PhC-CDFs. The PhC-CDFs minimize the AO-ADC integral and differential nonlinearity (INL/DNL) errors by compensating for the effect of the nonlinear frequency shift induced by PhC-SOA. The proposed design offers a footprint of 142 µm<sup>2</sup> AO-ADC working at 10 Gs/s.

Abstract:An optical analog to digital converter (OADC) comprises two main components: a nonlinear demultiplexer and an optical encoder. The nonlinear multiplexer converts the continuous input signal into three quantized discrete levels, while the optical encoder generates standard two-bit codes according to the different quantized levels. The optical Kerr effect is used to perform this process. For this purpose, several nonlinear rods that form a ring resonator are placed in the multiplexer. It can be said that their optical behavior can be controlled by light intensity. In this paper, analog to digital photonic crystal converters is investigated. The main purpose of this study is to provide designs that lead to the design of ADCs with high speed, small dimensions, high accuracy, and maximum sampling rate.

Abstract:Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) must be high speed, broadband, and accurate for the development of modern information systems, such as radar, imaging, and communications systems; photonic technologies are regarded as promising technologies for realizing these advanced requirements. Here, we present a deep-learning-powered photonic ADC architecture that simultaneously exploits the advantages of electronics and photonics and overcomes the bottlenecks of the two technologies, thereby overcoming the ADC tradeoff among speed, bandwidth, and accuracy. Via supervised training, the adopted deep neural networks learn the patterns of photonic system defects and recover the distorted data, thereby maintaining the high quality of the electronic quantized data succinctly and adaptively. The numerical and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed architecture outperforms state-of-the-art ADCs with developable high throughput; hence, deep learning performs well in photonic ADC systems. We anticipate that the proposed architecture will inspire future high-performance photonic ADC design and provide opportunities for substantial performance enhancement for the next-generation information systems.

Abstract:Wide deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) is inducing exponentially growing energy consumption. Traditional digital platforms are becoming difficult to fulfill such ever-growing demands on energy efficiency as well as computing latency, which necessitates the development of high efficiency analog hardware platforms for AI. Recently, optical and electrooptic hybrid computing is reactivated as a promising analog hardware alternative because it can accelerate the information processing in an energy-efficient way. Integrated photonic circuits offer such an analog hardware solution for implementing photonic AI and machine learning. For this purpose, we proposed a photonic analog of support vector machine and experimentally demonstrated low-latency and low-energy classification computing, which evidences the latency and energy advantages of optical analog computing over traditional digital computing. We also proposed an electrooptic Hopfield network for classifying and recognizing time-series data. This paper will review our work on implementing classification computing and Hopfield network by leveraging silicon photonic circuits.

Digital-analog hybrid matrix multiplication processor for optical neural networks

Abstract:The computational demands of modern AI have spurred interest in optical neural networks (ONNs) which offer the potential benefits of increased speed and lower power consumption. However, current ONNs face various challenges,most significantly a limited calculation precision (typically around 4 bits) and the requirement for high-resolution signal format converters (digital-to-analogue conversions (DACs) and analogue-to-digital conversions (ADCs)). These challenges are inherent to their analog computing nature and pose significant obstacles in practical implementation. Here, we propose a digital-analog hybrid optical computing architecture for ONNs, which utilizes digital optical inputs in the form of binary words. By introducing the logic levels and decisions based on thresholding, the calculation precision can be significantly enhanced. The DACs for input data can be removed and the resolution of the ADCs can be greatly reduced. This can increase the operating speed at a high calculation precision and facilitate the compatibility with microelectronics. To validate our approach, we have fabricated a proof-of-concept photonic chip and built up a hybrid optical processor (HOP) system for neural network applications. We have demonstrated an unprecedented 16-bit calculation precision for high-definition image processing, with a pixel error rate (PER) as low as $1.8\times10^{-3}$ at an signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 18.2 dB. We have also implemented a convolutional neural network for handwritten digit recognition that shows the same accuracy as the one achieved by a desktop computer. The concept of the digital-analog hybrid optical computing architecture offers a methodology that could potentially be applied to various ONN implementations and may intrigue new research into efficient and accurate domain-specific optical computing architectures for neural networks.

Abstract:Switching functionality is pivotal in advancing communication systems, serving as a paramount mechanism. Despite numerous innovations in this field, optical switch design, fabrication, and characterization have traditionally followed an iterative approach. Within this paradigm, the designer formulates an informed conjecture regarding the switch's structural configuration and subsequently resolves Maxwell's equations to ascertain its performance. Conversely, the inverse problem, which entails deriving a switch geometry to achieve a targeted electromagnetic response, continues to pose formidable challenges and necessitates substantial time and effort, particularly under the constraints of specific assumptions. In this work, we propose a deep neural network-based method to approximate the spectral transmittance of all-optical switches. The findings substantiate the efficacy of deep learning in the design of all-optical plasmonic switches, which are renowned as the fastest switches at the nanoscale. The nonlinear Kerr effect in square resonators is leveraged to demonstrate the switching performance. Juxtaposed with conventional simulations, the proposed model showcases a remarkable improvement in computational efficiency. Furthermore, deep learning can resolve nanophotonic inverse design problems without reliance on trial-and-error or empirical strategies. Compared to simulations, the mean squared error for both forward and inverse models is meager, with values of around 0.03 and 0.02, respectively. The deep learning-proposed switches exhibit excellent suitability for integration into photonic integrated circuits, substantially influencing the progression of all-optical signal processing.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel interference-based nanostructure was designed and simulated to realize an all-optical 2-bit reversible comparator by employing a novel technique. The plane wave expansion (PWE) method was adopted to analyze the encoder design and frequency modes. Aside from downsizing, the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was utilized for the simulation and numerical analysis of the design proposed herein. An ultra-compact nanostructure with a 129.8 μm2 footprint was utilized for the all-optical 2-bit reversible comparator. One of the noteworthy characteristics of the proposed nanostructure was its excellent contrast ratio (i.e., 13.8 dB) in comparison to other nanostructures. The bitrate and delay time in this nanostructure were 3.33 Tb/s and 300 fs, respectively. Based on the findings of the simulations conducted at a central wavelength of 1.55 μm, it is recommended to employ the nanostructure proposed herein during the third telecom window. A photonic crystal nano-resonator was utilized to design the high-performance all-optical 2-bit reversible comparator, which may also be employed in integrated optical circuits (IOCs).

Abstract:The rapid growth in artificial intelligence and modern communication systems demands innovative solutions for increased computational power and advanced signaling capabilities. Integrated photonics, leveraging the analog nature of electromagnetic waves at the chip scale, offers a promising complement to approaches based on digital electronics. To fully unlock their potential as analog processors, establishing a common technological base between conventional digital electronic systems and analog photonics is imperative to building next-generation computing and communications hardware. However, the absence of an efficient interface has critically challenged comprehensive demonstrations of analog advantage thus far, with the scalability, speed, and energy consumption as primary bottlenecks. Here, we address this challenge and demonstrate a general electro-optic digital-to-analog link (EO-DiAL) enabled by foundry-based lithium niobate nanophotonics. Using purely digital inputs, we achieve on-demand generation of (i) optical and (ii) electronic waveforms at information rates up to 186 Gbit/s. The former addresses the digital-to-analog electro-optic conversion challenge in photonic computing, showcasing high-fidelity MNIST encoding while consuming 0.058 pJ/bit. The latter enables a pulse-shaping-free microwave arbitrary waveform generation method with ultrabroadband tunable delay and gain. Our results pave the way for efficient and compact digital-to-analog conversion paradigms enabled by integrated photonics and underscore the transformative impact analog photonic hardware may have on various applications, such as computing, optical interconnects, and high-speed ranging.

Abstract:We propose a new type of photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC), designed for high-resolution (>7 bit) and high sampling rates (scalable to tens of GS/s). It is based on encoding the input analog voltage signal onto the phase of an optical pulse stream originating from a mode-locked laser, and uses spatial oversampling as a means to improve the conversion resolution. This paper describes the concept of spatial oversampling and draws its similarities to the commonly used temporal oversampling. The design and fabrication of a LiNbO(3)/silica hybrid photonic integrated circuit for implementing the spatial oversampling is shown, and its abilities are demonstrated experimentally by digitizing gigahertz signals (frequencies up to 18GHz) at an undersampled rate of 2.56GS/s with a conversion resolution of up to 7.6 effective bits. Oversampling factors of 1-4 are demonstrated.

Abstract:A novel approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion with Gray-code-like property is proposed and demonstrated. Instead of using Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs) with different half-wave voltages, an array of MZMs with identical half-wave voltages are applied to realize quantization and encoding, which greatly simplifies the implementation. Multiple comparators with preset thresholds are applied at the output of each MZM to improve the number of bits. Through properly setting the bias voltages of the MZMs, a photonic analog to digital converter (ADC) based on the robust symmetrical number system (RSNS) coding method is realized. As an example, a 3-channel structure with maximum quantization level of 17 (corresponding to 4.09 bits) is investigated in detail. We show that the differential encoding technique can be applied in the proposed structure, which increases the equivalent number of bits of the ADC system.

Abstract:Recently, different nanophotonic computational design methods based on optimization algorithms have been proposed which revolutionized the conventional design techniques of photonic integrated devices. The intelligently designed photonic devices have small footprints and high operating performance along with their fabrication feasibility. In this study, we introduce a new approach based on attractor selection algorithm to design photonic integrated devices. In order to demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach, we designed two structures: an optical coupler and an asymmetric light transmitter. The designed photonic devices operate at telecom wavelengths and have compact dimensions. The designed optical coupler has a footprint of only 4 × 2 μm2 and coupling efficiency of 87.5% at a design wavelength of 1550 nm with spatial beam width compression ratio of 10:1. Moreover, the designed optical coupler operates at a wide bandwidth of 6.45% where the transmission efficiency is above 80%. In addition, the designed asymmetric light transmitter with a size of 2 × 2 μm2 has the forward and backward transmission efficiencies of 88.1% and 8.6%, respectively. The bandwidth of 3.47% was calculated for the designed asymmetric light transmitter where the forward transmission efficiency is higher than 80% and the backward efficiency transmission is under 10%. In order to evaluate the operating performance of the designed photonic devices, coupling losses are analyzed. The presented results show that the attractor selection algorithm, which is based on artificial neural networks, can bring a conceptual breakthrough for the design of efficient integrated nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:Optical computation, especially the optical neural network, has gained great attention recently due to their high computation throughput and low energy consumption. The 22 optical processor, as a building block of high-order matrix multiplication circuit, can be an essential part for optical neural networks. For the first time, we demonstrate a compact and general optical processor on silicon-on-isolator platform with a footprint of 1.683.6 m. The transfer matrix of an optical processor is determined by its nanostructured pattern, which has 2420 possible combinations. To accelerate the design process of arbitrary optical processors, a two-step trained tandem model consisting of a forward model and an inverse model based on deep convolutional neural networks is proposed. After training, the forward model is able to predict the transfer matrix for a given optical processor with prediction accuracy of 98.8, while the calculation speed is more than one thousand times faster than the electromagnetic simulation. The inverse model can predict the geometry of an optical processor for a target transfer matrix with prediction accuracy of 96.5 and its prediction time is also within a second. This two-step trained tandem model paves a new way for optical processors design.
