Abstract:Brace members in steel braced frames are under axial, transverse, and out-of-plane motions during an earthquake event. This is while due to test limitations, they are usually tested only under axial loading. Therefore, the predicted behavior may not resemble the reality. This problem is explored in this study to assess the nonlinear behavior of a steel brace equipped with a pure bending yielding damper. It is clamped at its two ends for stability reasons because of the required discontinuity at its midlength where the damper is inserted. The steel brace is simultaneously loaded in three perpendicular directions to monitor how the plastic action spreads within the damper and if it deviates too much from the intended nonlinear axial behavior. While the in-plane components of the cyclic displacement are proportional according to the inclination angle of the brace, its out-of-plane displacement is taken to be 30 % of the in-plane displacement at each moment. It is shown that in three-dimensional behavior, still up to 80 % of the plastic energy dissipation corresponds to yielding of the intended damper plates. No instability is observed in the damper and it can survive concurrent displacements in three perpendicular directions.
