Abstract:High power Light-Emitting Diodes are used as the illuminating system of the portable projection system more recently. Through analysis the optical structure of high-power LEDs, the LED's optical model and package were simulated and the luminous intensity distribution diagram was obtained. According to the rectangle illuminating requirement of the projection system (the ratio of illuminating length and width is 4:3), a pair of reflective fly eye lens illuminating system with the characteristic of high-bright and uniformity illuminating was designed. Experimental results showed that greater than 85% of the uniform degree of illumination, the output light energy utilization ratio of 80% and the angle of divergence of 38 degree on the object plane were obtained while using the white LED as the light source with illuminating model of Lambertian distribution, luminous flux of 120lm and angle of divergence of 150 degree. This system will be fit for the portable and mini-projection system and other small light-emitting area, uniformity illuminating projection system.

Abstract:A pair of reflective fly eye lens with a high brightness LED as light source is put forward for micro-display projector. Because of reflective system, the embodiment is shorter than 20 mm. The uniformity is above 80% and the efficiency of the illuminator is better than 75%. The design method with induced equations for calculating the lens surface is given. Computer simulated results are also presented.

Abstract:Reflective fly-eye condenser with a high brightness LED as light source for micro-display projector is presented. The structure consists of a pair of identical symmetrical elliptical surfaces on which arranged curved mirror arrays. The advantages are compact volume, no chromatism, and uniform intensity profile. The embodiment is shorter than 20 mm. The uniformity is above 80% and the efficiency of the illuminator is better than 75%.

Abstract:Light-pipe system is a commonly used projection display illumination system, which affects the brightness and uniformity of the whole system greatly. In this paper, the theory of non-imaging optics is used to analyze the liquid crystal projection display system, especially the light efficiency. The theoretical design method of the light-pipe system is presented first. Issues that have to be considered in the procedure of a real light-pipe illumination system are analyzed. The detailed analysis shows that a balance between the section size of the light-pipe and the F/# of the light beam that could be utilized by the following optical system after light-pipe should be reached to acquire best performance. Results of the simulations for different light-pipe systems are presented at the end, and an optimized system is given.

Abstract:A compact LCD projection display system and its optical performance are discussed in this paper. In order to improve optical performance, two flyingeye lens have been employed in the system. It can improve the brightness uniformity of display image. Also, a polarized light transformer, which involves two functions: polarizing light radiation and converting unpolarized light into the same polarization direction light beam for LCD panels, has been developed to increase the optical efficiency and contrast ratio. Moreover, color separation and combination system has been designed and developed. Under these construction, the system with good optical performance and outstanding picture quality has been achieved.

Abandoning the traditional method, we proposed a LED color mixing method which can produce an illumination pattern with both high color uniformity and irradiance uniformity. This method is composed of the two main aspects: arrangement of irradiance array and design of LED lens. With the method, an independent rectangular irradiance distribution is generated by each lens unit, and the large scale color uniform illumination is obtained by arraying the irradiance distribution. A 3x3 array of LED module units consisting of 36 LED lens units with 4 different colors are designed, and a desired result with high color uniformity is obtained. This color mixing method is feasible and practical, and is superior to the existing methods.

Abstract:Light-emitting diode (LED) large-scale uniform rectangular illumination has a wide range of applications and is usually created by an irradiance superposition scheme. Abandoning the traditional method, we propose an approach to generate this illumination mode and enhance efficiency. With this method, an independent rectangular irradiance distribution is generated by each LED lens unit, and the large-scale illumination is obtained by arraying the irradiance distribution. Two slim direct-lit LED backlightings with a distance-height ratio of 3 were designed. An optical performance with irradiance nonuniformity less than 0.0228 and efficiency greater than 96% were obtained. Compared with the traditional methods, the efficiency is significantly enhanced and the number of the LED units is dramatically reduced by this new method. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The calculation method for light emission efficiency splits external quantum efficiency (EQE) into internal quantum efficiency (IQE) and light extraction efficiency (LEE) independently. Consequently, the IQE connected to Purcell factor and the LEE are calculated separately. This traditional method ignores the interplays between the Purcell factor and transmittance coefficient in spectral domain, which all strongly depend on emitting directions. In this work, we propose a new figure of merit to describe the light emission process accurately by using the direction-dependent Purcell factor and transmittance coefficient simultaneously. We use a specific LED structure as a numerical example to illustrate the calculation method and optimization procedure.

Abstract:An optimization method is proposed for designing an LED freeform lens which produces a uniform circular pattern with high energy efficiency. The results of design examples show that the irradiance distribution is well controlled with excellent uniformity and energy efficiency. This optimization method can be generalized to design freeform lenses with different lighting patterns or without rotational symmetry.

Abstract:The Improvement of light extraction efficiency of LED light source is the key and precondition in improving the lighting efficiency of micro projector.The max factor in restricting the light extraction rate of LED is the configuration of light source.A novel optical design of LED ' s encapsulation lens with multiple spherical surfaces is introduced and simulated.By using this single stage lens for both encapsulation and optical distribution,the light extraction efficiency of this new designed LED light source is improved to 94.9%,and the beam angle and the etendue are both excellently condensed.Also,the configuration of light source system is simplified as well.

Abstract:Illumination system is the key factor influencing both the luminous efficiency and the size of the optical engine of a projector.The traditional illumination system aims at the collection and distribution only for Lambert source,failing to radically overcome the disadvantages of low luminous efficiency or big size.A design in illumination system using Gradient-Index(GRIN) lens arrays for single chip digital light processing(DLP) laser projector is introduced.The complex optical components of traditional illumination system are substituted by single-stage lens.Also,the optical performance is simulated and evaluated by the ray tracing software.The results show that the luminous efficiency of the entire illumination system is 69.5%,the uniformity of illumination is 90.9%,and the volume is only 3.06 cm3,reaching the goal of improving the luminous efficiency and reducing the size of optical engine.

Abstract:With the advance in LCOS panel,LCOS projector is the only way to utilize a high resolution and micromation of the projector.Thus we require more intense,focused light with lower extended values.In this paper,we used two panel LEDs and a FF optical system,which includes a polarization conversion system,a light pipe and an illuminating lens.The simulation result shows that the light is uniform on the LCOS and the efficiency is high.The illumination system has a good performance,with also a simple and compact structure.

Abstract:Illumination system is an important component of projection display system, and decides the brightness and uniformity of the whole system. Fly-eye system is a commonly used illumination configuration. In traditional fly-eye illumination systems, the elemental lens of fly-eye always has the same aspect ratio as the LCD device. But when applied to wide screen projection systems, this will lead to a certain energy loss. This paper presents a new method for improving the performance of wide screen projection display illumination systems, which introduces cylinder lenses. With these cylinder lenses, fly-eye lenses of normal aspect ratio can be utilized in the novel wide screen illumination system. Result of simulation shows that a total increment of about 5% to 10% of the output lumens is available with this improved system.

Abstract:A parametric optimization method is proposed in the design of a high-efficiency free-form illumination system. The proposed method is intended to provide rectangular uniform illumination with a light emitting diode (LED) source. An initial illumination system is first constructed and parameterized. The parameters of the initial system are optimized according to actual simulation results, and one design sample is presented. A liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) micro-projector test module is fabricated and tested based on the design sample. Compared with the conventional micro-projectors using rotational symmetry devices, the micro-projector system designed with the parametric optimization method can send 1.65 times the source power to the LCoS active area with a 4:3 target ratio, and the uniformity reaches 98%.

Abstract:A novel structure of illumination system based on laser sources and gradient-index (GRIN) lens arrays for single-plate digital light processing (DLP) projector is proposed. Under the evaluation of light collection efficiency and illumination uniformity, we designed two different architectures of GRIN lens arrays: the unit lens cross section being either square or circular. Also, we designed the one-to-one coupling mechanism between GRIN lens array and Gaussian beam array. By means of three-dimensional modeling and ray tracing, we simulated the optical characteristics of illumination system, and the optical parameters are evaluated. Results show that the total light collection efficiency is 37.9%, the illumination uniformity is 89.7% and the volume is only 12.4 cm(3). Abstract:An optimization method is proposed for designing an LED freeform lens which produces a uniform circular pattern with high energy efficiency.This method is composed of three main aspects:design of the initial guess,parameterization of the freeform surface,and construction of the merit function.The initial guess is created by solving an ordinary differential equation numerically.An approach of selecting optimization points is introduced for parameterization of the freeform surface.The merit function is constructed by use of the irradiance uniformity and the efficiency of the lens.Design examples are given,and the results show that the irradiance distribution is well controlled with a maximum uniformity（the relative standard deviation of irradiance,RSD） of 0.0122 and a maximum efficiency of 93.88%.This optimization method can be generalized to design freeform lenses with different lighting patterns or without rotational symmetry.

Abstract:Abstract. Optimization of the illumination system of an ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UVLED)-based lithography system by reducing the system complexity and spatial volume has been a research focus. This work proposes a compact lithography illumination system that applies a specially designed embedded compound parabolic concentrator (ECPC) to replace the traditional collimation module and the zoom lenses module. The ECPC, comprised of two detachable parabolic surfaces, precisely collimates all light beams from the UVLED to a preset divergence angle of 6 deg and provides an adjustable lithography coherent factor. The final illumination system offers a square illumination field with a uniformity of up to 1.3% in the large coherent factor and a linearly adjustable numerical aperture in the range of 0.02 ∼ 0.04. The final exposure result of 0.7 μm based on the experiment setup further verifies the performance of the designed illumination system.
