Abstract:Superhydrophobic titanium (Ti) and its alloys have attracted considerable attention due to their application potentials; however, it is very difficult to obtain directly superhydrophobic surfaces on the Ti substrate by the anodization method. In the present work, TiO2 pinecone-like micro/nanostructures (TPSs) were fabricated on the Ti substrate by the anodization method. It was found that the sample surfaces without chemical modification were superhydrophilic and then became superhydrophobic after their exposure to air for a long time. After the high-temperature annealing treatment, the time required for the superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic wettability transition with the maximum water contact angle (WCA) of similar to 153 degrees and sliding angle (SA) of similar to 0 degrees was reduced from 81 days to 63 days. The surface chemistry and morphology analysis indicated that the wettability transition mainly occurred by the adsorption of organic compounds from ambient air and the trapped air in the microstructure. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic surfaces had excellent anti-icing and self-cleaning properties and long-term stability

An All-Hydrophobic Fluid Diode for Continuous and Reduced-Wastage Water Transport

Abstract:Directional water transport that occurs in natural insects and plants is important to both organisms and advanced science and technology. Despite the many studies conducted to facilitate directional liquid transport by constructing double-layered hydrophilic/hydrophobic materials, it remains difficult to achieve continuous water transport and reduce liquid wastage due to the hydrophilic regions. Herein, a directional water transport fabric (DWTF) was fabricated using a simple single-side coating method based on entirely hydrophobic materials. With coating thicknesses of 13-29 μm, the fabric could guide the continuous water motion from the coated to the uncoated side and can be utilized as a "liquid diode". In addition, the DWTF exhibited a water wastage reduction during the transport process, benefiting from the intrinsic hydrophobic properties of the material. Moreover, a plausible mechanism of water transport is proposed to explain the water droplet transfer in the bilayered hydrophobic materials. Consequently, the resulting DWTF exhibited an excellent accumulative one-way transport capability (AOTC) of 965.7% and a desirable overall moisture management capability (OMMC) of 0.92. This work provides an avenue for fabricating smart fluid delivery materials to various applications such as flexible microfluidics, wound dressing, oil-water separation processes, and engineered desiccant materials.

Abstract:The superhydrophobic surface (SHS) is attractive for drag reduction, anti-icing, and anti-fouling, but its insufficient non-wetting property has limited its applications. This study aims to fabricate, characterize, and evaluate SHS with excellent non-wetting properties. The SHS is fabricated via electrochemical treatments and silanization, changing superhydrophilic porous titanium substrates into superhydrophobicity. Hierarchical micro/nano-structures and low-energy coating are created on substrates with interconnected micropores, resulting in high static contact angle (SCA) air-permeable SHS (i.e. SCA = 152.5 degrees). The non-wetting property of the SHS, characterized by the interfacial reflection intensity, is reversibly recovered in the turbulent water flow test. An excellent non-wetting property is achieved by actively minimizing the pressure difference across the surface.

Abstract:Inspired by natural creatures, bubble manipulation by surface microstructures in aqueous media has attracted great attention due to its promising applications in industrial production. Herein, a superhydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus aluminum membrane with tapered micropore arrays was fabricated by femtosecond laser drilling, surface fluorination, and subsequent fluorination removal. Compared with the single interception or penetration of double-faced hydrophilic or superhydrophobic membranes, the Janus membrane showed a distinctive unidirectional air bubble transport ability. In experiment, the air bubbles introduced on the lower hydrophilic surface could spontaneously move to the upper superhydrophobic surface, but they were prevented in the inverse direction. The dynamic process of unidirectional transport was in-situ monitored, and the physical mechanism was systemically investigated. In addition, the concepts of air-participating chemical/physical processes were demonstrated such as discoloration of purple litmus solution by CO2 injection, which proved the Janus membrane practicability. Directional Transport of Centimeter-Scale Object on Anisotropic Microcilia Surface under Water

Abstract:Natural organisms such as cactus spines or trachea cilia have unique directional transport ability, owing to their anisotropic surface structures or asymmetric motion. However, most artificial interfacial materials are incapable of transporting macroscale object underwater. Herein, we report that anisotropic microcilia arrays, composed of cobalt fine powder and PDMS, can successfully transport the centimeter-scale hydrogel underwater by periodically asymmetric stroke under alternative magnetic field. Reciprocal collective stroke of anisotropic microcilia can generate directional flow, propelling the centimeter-scale hydrogel slice forward. Accompanying computational simulation results are consistent with the directional transport behaviors observed in our experiments. This study provides a clue to design artificial anisotropic interfacial materials with capability of transporting macroscale object at low Reynolds number.
Smart design of wettability-patterned gradients on substrate-independent coated surfaces to control unidirectional spreading of droplets.

Abstract:Highly adherent wettability patterns on the substrate-independent superhydrophobic surfaces of trimethoxyoctadecylsilane modified titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based coatings were prepared by using commercial photolithography. Three custom unidirectional channels with gradient wettability patterns were obtained by spatially selective wettability conversion from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic when the coatings were exposed to ultraviolet light (∼365 nm). The movement behavior of droplets on these unidirectional channels was studied and the displacement of droplet movement was effectively controlled. Integrating the idea of gradient wettability patterns into planar microfluidic devices (microreactors), a self-driven fluid transport was achieved to realize droplet metering, merging or reaction, and rapid transport. This self-driven fluid transport with gradient wettability patterns has great potential in fabricating a new category of pump-free microfluidic systems that can be used in various conditions.

Abstract:Janus membranes with superwetting play an important role in many fields, such as oil/water separation, unidirectional fluid transportation, microfluidic devices, intelligent ion valve, mass/heat transfer applications, etc. Although there has been some progress in the preparation of the Janus membranes with unidirectional penetration, it still remains a great difficulty for facile fabrication of two dimensional Janus membranes with a large pore structure and stable bubble unidirectional transport in the water. Herein, a signal-layer Janus membrane with superwetting is fabricated via the method of liquid-regulated hydrophobic modification strategy. The resultant Janus mesh achieves underwater unidirectional penetration. Namely, Underwater bubbles can pass unidirectionally from superhydrophobic side to hydrophilic side, but are blocked from passing through in the opposite direction. Thus, this Janus membrane with the unidirectional underwater bubbles penetration "diode" performance. We believe this work can promote the development of multi-dimensional Janus materials for fluid directional transport.

Abstract:A fluid diode that allows fluid flow in one direction but blocks fluid flow in the opposite direction has wide applications including oil recovery, drug delivery, and lab‐on‐a‐chip microfluidics. Many studies are conducted to facilitate directional liquid motion on the solid surface or across thin porous layers. However, the self‐driven one‐way flow inside porous systems still remains a significant challenge. Here, a novel all‐hydrophilic fluid diode (AHFD) made of porous materials with asymmetric pores is reported, which allows capillary flow in a chosen direction. The direction‐dependent flow process and the breakthrough pressure are experimentally and theoretically examined. The proposed AHFD can have many potential applications such as functional protective clothing, microfluidic valve, and oil–water separator, and the idea can be extended to develop other all lyophilic fluid diodes such as oleophilic diode. A novel all hydrophilic fluid diode (AHFD) that allows capillary flow in one direction but blocks capillary flow in the opposite direction is demonstrated. The flow unidirectionality within the multilayer hydrophilic diode results from the difference of pore size of the layers. The fabrication of AHFDs follows a simple procedure and uses inexpensive commercial available materials.

Abstract:As a widely existing phenomenon of the surface of natural organisms, anisotropic wetting arouses much attention for their wide applications in fields as liquid transportation, fog collection, microfluidic devices and oil-water separation. Here, we presented unidirectional water spreading on the surface of oblique polyimide (PI) nanowires (NWs) array and directional moving of water droplet on hydrophobically treated oblique PI NWs array. Directional water transportation and fog collection were realized using the oblique PI NWs array. As the NWs array could be easily fabricated on PI films with our method, it is beneficial for the applications.

Abstract:Unidirectional liquid transport, facilitated by asymmetric properties or structures, has gained prominence in applications, such as liquid manipulation, water harvesting, and microfluidic systems. Janus two-dimensional (2D) porous materials, known for their unique capacity for unidirectional liquid transport, have attracted significant interest. This phenomenon is driven by the capillary force and Laplace pressure, enabling efficient liquid flow in a preferred manner. Leveraging this process, Janus 2D porous materials have found applications in a series of multiphase processes without additional energy input. Despite a growing body of researches in this area, there is a notable absence of a comprehensive review focusing on the fundamentals of Janus 2D porous materials with unidirectional liquid transport capacity. This Review aims to address this gap by summarizing present hypotheses, factors influencing unidirectional transport, construction strategies, and potential applications. Furthermore, the future of this field is forecast to present challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Inspired by nature, a strategy for directional water self‐transport is proposed on a lubricant‐infused heterogeneous superwettability surface, which is fabricated via femtosecond laser direct writing and lubricant infusion. The water droplet on the sample surface can be transported to the trapped droplet by an asymmetrical wetting ridge. This work extends the applications of multifunctional slippery surfaces and directional water self‐transport. Directional water self‐transport plays a crucial role in diverse applications such as biosensing and water harvesting. Despite extensive progress, current strategies for directional water self‐transport are restricted to a short self‐driving distance, single function, and complicated fabrication methods. Here, a lubricant‐infused heterogeneous superwettability surface (LIHSS) for directional water self‐transport is proposed on polyimide (PI) film through femtosecond laser direct writing and lubricant infusion. By tuning the parameters of the femtosecond laser, the wettability of PI film can be transformed into superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic. After trapping water droplets on the superhydrophilic surface and depositing excess lubricant, the asymmetrical wetting ridge drives water droplets by an attractive capillary force on the LIHSS. Notably, the maximum droplet self‐driving distance can approach ≈3 mm, which is nearly twice as long as the previously reported strategies for direction water self‐transport. Significantly, it is demonstrated that this strategy makes it possible to achieve water self‐transport, anti‐gravity pumping, and chemical microreaction on a tilted LIHSS. This work provides an efficient method to fabricate a promising platform for realizing directional water self‐transport.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) membranes represented by graphene oxide (GO) exhibit great potential in developing high-performance separation membranes. However, insufficient interlayer chemical microenvironment and unstable laminar structure are still huge challenge to achieve high-efficiency water-selective transport. Herein, we construct high-density hydrophilic microregions in GO membrane through introducing sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSSNa) with abundant ionized sulfonate groups to provide good hydrophilic chemical microenvironment, further facilitating fast water-selective permeation. Meanwhile, the obtained well-stacked lamina structure driven by self-assembly between PSSNa and GO nanosheets conduce to achieve superior separation of water-butanol mixture through strict size sieving effect. Consequently, the as-prepared PSSNa/GO membrane on polyethersulfone (PES) substrate exhibit excellent separation performance with flux of 5.28 kg m −2 h −1 and excellent separation factor of 3487 for water/butanol at 343 K, representing the state-of-the-art selective separation membranes. This strategy provides new insight to finely construct better chemical microenvironment in 2D confined channels for precise and high-efficiency aqueous molecular separation process.

High‐Performance Directional Water Transport Using a Two‐Dimensional Periodic Janus Gradient Structure

Abstract:A 2D bioinspired water transport system with periodic Janus gradient structure demonstrates a long‐range, ultrafast, and directional water propel approach with an averaged velocity of over 400 mm s−1 and a maximum normalized transport distance of 23.4 for a 3 μL droplet, as well as an ultralow volume loss of ≈6.02% upon high‐flux water transport. Numerous materials in micro‐ or nanoscale hierarchical structures with surface gradients serve as the enablers in directional liquid transportation. However, concurrent high‐speed and long‐range liquid transport is yet to be fully realized so far. Here, an overall‐improved approach is achieved in both water transport distance and velocity aspects using a 2D periodic Janus gradient structure, which is inspired by the Janus‐wettable desert beetle back, tapered asymmetric cacti spine, and periodic Nepenthes alata microcavity. This 2D channel can efficiently regulate the kinetics of liquid transport within its confined structure, in which the terminal potential well and periodic Janus topological structure enable sustaining water propelling through a long distance. In addition, the rapidly formed aqueous film facilitates a high initial momentum and fast transport of liquid droplets along the channel, achieving an averaged velocity of over 400 mm s−1 and a maximum normalized transport distance of 23.4 for a 3 μL droplet, as well as an ultralow liquid volume loss of 6.02% upon high‐flux water transport. This scalable, controllable, and easy‐fabricable 2D water transport system provides an insightful pathway in realizing high‐performance water manipulation and possibly facilitates substantial innovative applications in multidisciplinary fields.

Abstract:Biomimetic asymmetric nanochannels have recently attracted increasing attention from researchers, especially in the aspect of the asymmetric wettability (a hydrophilic-hydrophobic system), which can be utilized to control the wetting behavior of aqueous media and to offer a means for guiding water motion. By using molecular dynamics simulations, a design for a potentially efficient water filter is presented based on (n, n) single-walled carbon nanotubes, where n = 6, 8, 10 and 12, asymmetrically modified with hydrophilic groups (carboxyl, -COOH) at one tip and hydrophobic groups (trifluoromethyl, -CF(3) ) at the other. The reduced water density on the hydrophobic sides of the functionalized nanotubes are observed in both pure water and aqueous electrolyte solution, except for the functionalized (6, 6) tube, due to the change of dipole orientation of the single-file water wire within it. The functionalized (8, 8) tube can significantly maintain the low water density on the hydrophobic side. Both (6, 6) and (8, 8) tubes have relatively high energy barriers at their tips for ion permeation, which can be obtained by calculating the potential of mean force. Such tip functionalization of a nanotube therefore suggests the great possibilities of water transport and filtration, dominated by asymmetric wettability. The functionalized (8, 8) tube could act as a nanofluidic channel for water purification, not only for ion exclusion but also as a stable water column structure.
Unidirectional Transport of Water Nanodroplets Entrapped Inside a Nonparallel Smooth Surface: a Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

Abstract:The unidirectional transport of liquid nanodroplets is an important topic of research in the field of drug delivery, labs on chips, micro/nanofluidics, and water collection. Inspired by nature a nonparallel surface (NPS) is modelled in this study for pumpless water transport applications. The dynamics of water transport is analyzed with the aid of Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. There were five different types of NPSs namely A1, A2, A3, A4, and A5 utilized in this study, with separation angles equal to 5°, 7°, 9°, 11°, and 13° respectively. The water droplet was placed at the beginning of the open end of the NPS and it moved spontaneously towards the cusp of the surface in all cases except for the 13° NPS. The size of the water droplet, too, was altered and four different sizes of water droplets (3000, 4000, 5000, and 6000 molecules) were utilized in this study. Furthermore, the surface energy parameter of the NPS was also changed and four different values, i.e. 7.5 eV, 17.5 eV, 27.56 eV, 37.5 eV were assigned to the surface in order to represent a surface with hydrophobic to hydrophilic characteristics. In addition the importance of water bridge formation for its spontaneous propulsion with the influence of surface energy and droplet size is also discussed in this study. Moreover, a unique design is modelled for the practical application of water harvesting and a large size water droplet is formed by combining two water droplets placed inside a NPS.

Abstract:Directional liquid transport has gradually drawn worldwide attention due to its diverse potential applications in precision medicine, microfluidics, and microreactors. However, previous directional liquid control usually resorts to complex hierarchical micro‐nano structures, heterogeneous wettability, or external driving fields, which inevitably limits the flexibility and applicability of liquid manipulation. Here, a novel open channel surface is presented, which exhibits an on‐demand directional transport performance via a shifting mechanism of weak area on liquid precursor. The coupling effect of sidewall wettability and bottom hydrophobic barrier patterns redistributes the surface pressure from the front and rear meniscus of liquid precursor, which determine the position of weak area and transport direction. The impacts of wettability and various barrier patterns on anisotropic liquid transport ability are made clear, and the design principle of unidirectional open channels without complex microstructure is validated. Smart directional transport can also be easily built by use of various stimulus materials, such as thermal responsive polymer. This controllable directional liquid transport can introduce ways for various on‐demand liquid manipulations. A novel open channel surface that exhibits on‐demand directional liquid transport via a shifting mechanism of a weak area on liquid precursor is presented. The coalescence effects of sidewall wettability and bottom barrier patterns are validated. This easy‐fabricated surface offers new opportunities to design smart liquid manipulation systems and has potential in various fields including microfluidics and microreactors.

Abstract:Controlling water transport and management is crucial for continuous and reliable system operation in harsh weather conditions. Passive strategies based on nonwetting surfaces are desirable, but so far, the implementation of superhydrophobic coatings into real-world applications has been limited by durability issues and, in some cases, lack of compliance with environmental regulations. Inspired by surface patterning observed on living organisms, in this study we have developed durable surfaces based on contrast wettability for capillary-driven water transport and management. The surface fabrication process combines a hydrophobic coating with hard-anodized aluminum patterning, using a scalable femtosecond laser microtexturing technique. The concept targets heavy-duty engineering applications; particularly in aggressive weather conditions where corrosion is prevalent and typically the anodic aluminum oxide-based coating is used to protect the surface from corrosion, the concept has been validated on anodic aluminum oxide coated aluminum alloy substrates. Such substrates with contrast wettable characteristics show long-term durability in both natural and lab-based artificial UV and corrosion tests where superhydrophobic coatings tend to degrade.
Tunable Giant Anisotropic Diffusion of Water Sub-Monolayers Between Graphene Layers

Abstract:We investigate the in-plane confinement effect of two graphene layers on the diffusion behaviour of water sub-monolayers using molecular dynamics simulations. An unexpected fast diffusion state with giant anisotropy is observed when the two confining graphene walls have certain shifts applied to their relative positions. The phenomenon is mainly attributed to the smooth one-dimensional potential channels produced by the composition effect of the potential energy landscapes of the two graphene walls, and the concerted motion of water molecules due to hydrogen bonding. Unique duality in the diffusion mechanism is observed in the fast diffusion state, as is ballistic motion along the potential channels and Fickian diffusion across such channels. The smooth potential channels can be created in certain directions simply by shifting the confining walls, which provides a novel measure to manipulate the motion of confined molecules in real-time.

In article number 2211596, Moyuan Cao and co‐workers present superhydrophilic origami with dual‐asymmetric channels to realize a spontaneous, unidirectional, adaptive, and gravity‐independent fluid‐collection process. The further integration of a radiative layer can improve fog and steam collection, proving a potential application in water reusage.
