We show that, under a diffusive scaling involving different parameters of the system, the normalized point-to-point partition function of the polymer converges in law to the solution of the stochastic heat equation with fractional Laplacian and Gaussian multiplicative noise.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study a one-dimensional polymer penalized by its range and placed in a random environment $\omega$. The law of the simple symmetric random walk up to time $n$ is modified by the exponential of the sum of $\beta \omega_z - h$ sitting on its range, with~$h$ and $\beta$ positive parameters. It is known that, at first order, the polymer folds itself to a segment of optimal size $c_h n^{1/3}$ with $c_h = \pi^{2/3} h^{-1/3}$. Here we study how disorder influences finer quantities. If the random variables $\omega_z$ are i.i.d.\ with a finite second moment, we prove that the left-most point of the range is located near $-u_* n^{1/3}$, where $u_* \in [0,c_h]$ is a constant that only depends on the disorder. This contrast with the homogeneous model (i.e. when $\beta=0$), where the left-most point has a random location between $-c_h n^{1/3}$ and $0$. With an additional moment assumption, we are able to show that the left-most point of the range is at distance $\mathcal U n^{2/9}$ from $-u_* n^{1/3}$ and the right-most point at distance $\mathcal V n^{2/9}$ from $(c_h-u_*) n^{1/3}$. Here again, $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{V}$ are constants that depend only on $\omega$.

The proposed approach allows us to compute the scaling exponent θ of the free energy fluctuations as well as the left tail of its probability distribution function. Abstract:The breakdown of dynamical scaling for a dilute polymer solution in 2D has been suggested by Shannon and Choy [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 79}, 1455 (1997)]. However, we show here both numerically and analytically that dynamical scaling holds when the finite-size dependence of the relevant dynamical quantities is properly taken into account. We carry out large-scale simulations in 2D for a polymer chain in a good solvent with full hydrodynamic interactions to verify dynamical scaling. This is achieved by novel mesoscopic simulation techniques.

Abstract:Although it is recognized that Anderson localization takes place for all states at a dimension $d$ less or equal $2$, while delocalization is expected for hopping $V(r)$ decreasing with the distance slower or as $r^{-d}$, the localization problem in the crossover regime for the dimension $d=2$ and hopping $V(r) \propto r^{-2}$ is not resolved yet. Following earlier suggestions we show that for the hopping determined by two-dimensional anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions in the presence of time-reversal symmetry there exist two distinguishable phases at weak and strong disorder. The first phase is characterized by ergodic dynamics and superdiffusive transport, while the second phase is characterized by diffusive transport and delocalized eigenstates with fractal dimension less than $2$. The transition between phases is resolved analytically using the extension of scaling theory of localization and verified numerically using an exact numerical diagonalization.

Abstract:Using a finite size scaling form for reunion probability, we show numerically the existence of a binding-unbinding transition for Directed polymers with random interaction. The cases studied are (A1) two chains in 1+1 dimensions, (A2) two chains in 2+1 dimensions and (B) three chains in 1+1 dimensions. A similar finite size scaling form for fluctuation establishes a disorder induced transition with identical exponents for cases A2 and B. The length scale exponents in all the three cases are in agreement with previous exact renormalization group results.

Universal scaling of the diffusivity of dendrimers in a semidilute solution of linear polymers

Abstract:The static and dynamic properties of dendrimers in semidilute solutions of linear chains of comparable size are investigated using Brownian dynamics simulations. The radius of gyration and diffusivity of a wide variety of low generation dendrimers and linear chains in solution follow universal scaling laws independent of their topology. Analysis of the shape functions and internal density of dendrimers shows that they are more spherical than linear chains and have a dense core. At intermediate times, dendrimers become subdiffusive, with an exponent higher than that previously reported for nanoparticles in semidilute polymer solutions. The long-time diffusivity of dendrimers does not follow theoretical predictions for nanoparticles. We propose a new scaling law for the long-time diffusion coefficients of dendrimers which accounts for the fact that, unlike nanoparticles, dendrimers shrink with an increase in background solution concentration. Analysis of the properties of a special case of a higher functionality dendrimer shows a transition from polymer-like to nanoparticle-like behaviour.

Abstract:We introduce a new self-interacting random walk on the integers in a dynamic random environment and show that it converges to a pure diffusion in the scaling limit. We also find a lower bound on the diffusion coefficient in some special cases. With minor changes the same argument can be used to prove the scaling limit of the corresponding walk in Z^d.

Abstract:We consider the long-time behavior of a diffusion process on $\mathbb{R}^d$ advected by a stationary random vector field which is assumed to be divergence-free, dihedrally symmetric in law and have a log-correlated potential. A special case includes $\nabla^\perp$ of the Gaussian free field in two dimensions. We show the variance of the diffusion process at a large time $t$ behaves like $2 c_* t (\log t)^{1/2}$, in a quenched sense and with a precisely determined, universal prefactor constant $c_*>0$. We also prove a quenched invariance principle under this superdiffusive scaling. The proof is based on a rigorous renormalization group argument in which we inductively analyze coarse-grained diffusivities, scale-by-scale. Our analysis leads to sharp homogenization and large-scale regularity estimates on the infinitesimal generator, which are subsequently transferred into quantitative information on the process.

Abstract:We consider the model of the directed polymer in a random medium of dimension 1+3, and investigate its multifractal properties at the localization/delocalization transition. In close analogy with models of the quantum Anderson localization transition, where the multifractality of critical wavefunctions is well established, we analyse the statistics of the position weights $w_L(\vec r)$ of the end-point of the polymer of length $L$ via the moments $Y_q(L) = \sum_{\vec r} [w_L(\vec r)]^q$. We measure the generalized exponents $\tau(q)$ and $\tilde \tau(q)$ governing the decay of the typical values $Y^{typ}_q(L) = e^{\bar{\ln Y_q(L)}} \sim L^{- \tau(q)} $ and disorder-averaged values $\bar{Y_q(L)} \sim L^{- \tilde \tau(q)} $ respectively. To understand the difference between these exponents, $ \tau(q) \neq \tilde \tau(q)$ above some threshold $q>q_c \sim 2$, we compute the probability distributions of $y=Y_q(L)/Y^{typ}_q(L) $ over the samples : we find that these distributions becomes scale invariant with a power-law tail $1/y^{1+x_q}$. These results thus correspond to the Ever-Mirlin scenario [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 3690 (2000)] for the statistics of Inverse Participation Ratios at the Anderson localization transitions. Finally, the finite-size scaling analysis in the critical region yields the correlation length exponent $\nu \sim 2$.

Random walkers in one-dimensional random environments: exact renormalization group analysis

Abstract:Sinai's model of diffusion in one dimension with random local bias is studied by a real space renormalization group, which yields exact results at long times. The effects of an additional small uniform bias force are also studied. We obtain analytically the scaling form of the distribution of the position x(t) of a particle, the probability of it not returning to the origin, and the distributions of first passage times, in an infinite sample as well as in the presence of a boundary and in a finite but large sample. We compute the distribution of the meeting time of two particles in the same environment. We also obtain a detailed analytic description of the thermally averaged trajectories by computing quantities such as the joint distribution of the number of returns and of the number of jumps forward. These quantities obey multifractal scaling, characterized by generalized persistence exponents theta(g) which we compute. In the presence of a small bias, the number of returns to the origin becomes finite, characterized by a universal scaling function which we obtain. The full statistics of the distribution of successive times of return of thermally averaged trajectories is obtained, as well as detailed analytical information about correlations between directions and times of successive jumps. The two-time distribution of the positions of a particle, x(t) and x(t') with t>t', is also computed exactly. It is found to exhibit "aging" with several time regimes characterized by different behaviors. In the unbiased case, for t-t' approximately t'alpha with alpha>1, it exhibits a ln t/ln t' scaling, with a singularity at coinciding rescaled positions x(t)=x(t'). This singularity is a novel feature, and corresponds to particles that remain in a renormalized valley. For closer times alpha<1, the two-time diffusion front exhibits a quasiequilibrium regime with a ln(t-t')/ln t' behavior which we compute. The crossover to a t/t' aging form in the presence of a small bias is also obtained analytically. Rare events corresponding to intermittent splitting of the thermal packet between separated wells which dominate some averaged observables are also characterized in detail. Connections with the Green function of a one-dimensional Schrödinger problem and quantum spin chains are discussed.
Superdiffusive Scaling Limits for the Symmetric Exclusion Process with Slow Bonds

Abstract:In \cite{fgn1}, the hydrodynamic limit in the diffusive scaling of the symmetric simple exclusion process with a finite number of slow bonds of strength $n^{-\beta}$ has been studied. Here $n$ is the scaling parameter and $\beta>0$ is fixed. As shown in \cite{fgn1}, when $\beta>1$, such a limit is given by the heat equation with Neumann boundary conditions. In this work, we find more non-trivial super-diffusive scaling limits for this dynamics. Assume that there are $k$ equally spaced slow bonds in the system. If $k$ is fixed and the time scale is $k^2n^\theta$, with $\theta\in (2,1+\beta)$, the density is asymptotically constant in each of the $k$ boxes, and equal to the initial expected mass in that box, i.e., there is no time evolution. If $k$ is fixed and the time scale is $k^2n^{1+\beta}$, then the density is also spatially constant in each box, but evolves in time according to the discrete heat equation. Finally, if the time scale is $k^2n^{1+\beta}$ and, additionally, the number of boxes $k$ increases to infinity, then the system converges to the continuous heat equation on the torus, with no boundary conditions.

An invariance principle for the 2d weakly self-repelling Brownian polymer

Abstract:We investigate the large-scale behaviour of the Self-Repelling Brownian Polymer (SRBP) in the critical dimension $d=2$. The SRBP is a model of self-repelling motion, which is formally given by the solution a stochastic differential equation driven by a standard Brownian motion and with a drift given by the negative gradient of its own local time. As with its discrete counterpart, the "true" self-avoiding walk (TSAW) of [D.J. Amit, G. Parisi, & L. Peliti, Asymptotic behaviour of the "true" self-avoiding walk, Phys. Rev. B, 1983], it is conjectured to be logarithmically superdiffusive, i.e. to be such that its mean-square displacement grows as $t(\log t)^\beta$ for $t$ large and some currently unknown $\beta\in(0,1)$. The main result of the paper is an invariance principle for the SRBP under the weak coupling scaling, which corresponds to scaling the SRBP diffusively and simultaneously tuning down the strength of the self-interaction in a scale-dependent way. The diffusivity for the limiting Brownian motion is explicit and its expression provides compelling evidence that the $\beta$ above should be $1/2$. Further, we derive the scaling limit of the so-called environment seen by the particle process, which formally solves a non-linear singular stochastic PDE of transport-type, and prove this is given by the solution of a stochastic linear transport equation with enhanced diffusivity.

Diffusion in a two-dimensional energy landscape in the presence of dynamical correlations and validity of random walk model

Abstract:Diffusion in a multidimensional energy surface with minima and barriers is a problem of importance in statistical mechanics and it also has wide applications, such as protein folding. To understand it in such a system, we carry out theory and simulations of a tagged particle moving on a two-dimensional periodic potential energy surface, both in the presence and absence of noise. Langevin dynamics simulations at multiple temperatures are carried out to obtain the diffusion coefficient of a solute particle. Friction is varied from zero to large values. Diffusive motion emerges in the limit of a long time, even in the absence of noise. Noise destroys the correlations and increases diffusion at small friction. Diffusion thus exhibits a nonmonotonic friction dependence at the intermediate value of the damping, ultimately converging to our theoretically predicted value. The latter is obtained using the well-established relationship between diffusion and random walk. An excellent agreement is obtained between theory and simulations in the high-friction limit but not so in the intermediate regime. We explain the deviation in the low- to intermediate-friction regime using the modified random walk theory. The rate of escape from one cell to another is obtained from the multidimensional rate theory of Langer. We find that enhanced dimensionality plays an important role. To quantify the effects of noise on the potential-imposed coherence on the trajectories, we calculate the Lyapunov exponent. At small friction values, the Lyapunov exponent mimics the friction dependence of the rate.
Irregularity of polymer domain boundaries in two-dimensional polymer solution

Abstract:Polymer chains composing a polymer solution in strict two dimensions (2D) are characterized with irregular domain boundaries, whose fractal dimension ($\mathcal{D}^{\partial}$) varies with the area fraction of the solution and the solvent quality. {\color{black}Our analysis of numerical simulations of polymer solutions finds} that $\mathcal{D}^{\partial}$ in good solvents changes non-monotonically from $\mathcal{D}^{\partial}=4/3$ in dilute phase to $\mathcal{D}^{\partial}=5/4$ in dense phase, maximizing to $\mathcal{D}^{\partial}\approx 3/2$ at a crossover area fraction $\phi_{\rm cr}\approx 0.2$, whereas for polymers in $\Theta$ solvents $\mathcal{D}^{\partial}$ remains constant at $\mathcal{D}^{\partial}=4/3$ from dilute to semi-dilute phase. Using polymer physics arguments, we rationalize these values, and show that the maximum irregularity of $\mathcal{D}^\partial\approx 3/2$ is due to "fjord"-like corrugations formed along the domain boundaries which also maximize at the same crossover area fraction. Our finding of $\mathcal{D}^\partial\approx 3/2$ is, in fact, in perfect agreement with the upper bound for the fractal dimension of the external perimeter of 2D random curves at scaling limit, which is predicted by the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE).

Our contributions are in three directions: a conditional law of large numbers and regeneration structures for RWRE in Gibbsian environments, quenched invariance principles for balanced elliptic (but non uniformly elliptic) environments, and a proof of the Einstein relation for balanced iid uniformly elliptic environments.
