Abstract:The author considers the largest eigenvalues of random matrices from Gaussian unitaryensemble and Laguerre unitary ensemble,and the rightmost charge in certain random growth models.We obtain some precise asymptotics results,which are in a sense similar to the precise asymptoticsfor sums of independent random variables in the context of the law of large numbers and completeconvergence.Our proofs depend heavily upon the upper and lower tail estimates for random matricesand random growth models.The Tracy-Widom distribution plays a central role as well.
Bordered and Framed Toeplitz and Hankel Determinants with Applications to Integrable Probability

Abstract:Bordered and framed Toeplitz/Hankel determinants have the same structure as Toeplitz/Hankel determinants except in small number of matrix rows and/or columns. We review these structured determinants and their connections to orthogonal polynomials, collecting well-known and perhaps less well-known results. We present some applications for these structured determinants to ensembles of non-intersecting paths and the six-vertex model, with an eye towards asymptotic analysis. We also prove some asymptotic formulae for the probability of non-intersection for an ensemble of continuous time random walks for certain choices of starting and ending points as the number of random walkers tends to infinity.

Integrable Lattices: Random Matrices and Random Permutations

Abstract:These lectures present a survey of recent developments in the area of random matrices (finite and infinite) and random permutations. These probabilistic problems suggest matrix integrals (or Fredholm determinants), which arise very naturally as integrals over the tangent space to symmetric spaces, as integrals over groups and finally as integrals over symmetric spaces. An important part of these lectures is devoted to showing that these matrix integrals, upon apropriately adding time-parameters, are natural tau-functions for integrable lattices, like the Toda, Pfaff and Toeplitz lattices, but also for integrable PDE's, like the KdV equation. These matrix integrals or Fredholm determinants also satisfy Virasoro constraints, which combined with the integrable equations lead to (partial) differential equations for the original probabilities.

Abstract:We determine the asymptotics of the block Toeplitz determinants detTn(φ) as n→∞ for N×N matrix‐valued piecewise continuous functions φ with a finitely many jumps under mild additional conditions. In particular, we prove that detTn(φ)∼GnnΩEasn→∞, where G , E , and Ω are constants that depend on the matrix symbol φ and are described in our main results. Our approach is based on a new localization theorem for Toeplitz determinants, a new method of computing the Fredholm index of Toeplitz operators with piecewise continuous matrix‐valued symbols, and other operator theoretic methods. As an application of our results, we consider piecewise continuous symbols that arise in the study of entanglement entropy in quantum spin chain models.

A survey of asymptotics of determinants for structured matrices

Abstract:In this survey we show how to produce asymptotics of determinants of structured matrices using operator theory methods. We describe the asymptotics for finite Toeplitz matrices, finite Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices and generalizations of these, and also finite sections of functions of Toeplitz operators, all with smooth matrix-valued symbols. Many of these results are well-known. However, the results for certain Toeplitz plus Hankel operators with matrix-valued symbol are presented for the first time and the result for the finite sections of functions of Toeplitz operators is new.

Abstract:In this short article we propose a full large $N$ asymptotic expansion of the probability that the $m^{\text{th}}$ power of a random unitary matrix of size $N$ has all its eigenvalues in a given arc-interval centered in $1$ when $N$ is large. This corresponds to the asymptotic expansion of a Toeplitz determinant whose symbol is the indicator function of several intervals having a discrete rotational symmetry. This solves and improves a conjecture left opened by the author. It also provides a rare example of the explicit computation of a full asymptotic expansion of a genus $g>0$ classical spectral curve, including the oscillating non-perturbative terms, using the topological recursion.

Abstract:The problem of counting the $\mathbb{F}_q$-valued points of a variety has been well-studied from algebro-geometric, topological, and combinatorial perspectives. We explore a combinatorially flavored version of this problem studied by Anzis et al. (2018), which is similar to work of Kontsevich, Elkies, and Haglund. Anzis et al. considered the question: what is the probability that the determinant of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix vanishes if the variables are chosen uniformly at random from a finite field? They gave a formula for various partitions such as hooks, staircases, and rectangles. We give a formula for partitions whose parts form an arithmetic progression, verifying and generalizing one of their conjectures. More generally, we compute the probability of the determinant vanishing for a class of matrices (``multislant matrices'') made of Toeplitz blocks with certain properties. We furthermore show that the determinant of a skew Jacobi-Trudi matrix is equidistributed across the finite field if the skew partition is a ribbon.

Abstract:The four major asymptotic level density laws of random matrix theory may all be showcased though their Jacobi parameter representation as having a bordered Toeplitz form. We compare and contrast these laws, completing and exploring their representations in one place. Inspired by the bordered Toeplitz form, we propose an algorithm for the finite moment problem by proposing a solution whose density has a bordered Toeplitz form.

Strong Szegő Limit Theorems for Multi-Bordered, Framed, and Multi-Framed Toeplitz Determinants

Abstract:This work provides the general framework for obtaining strong Szegő limit theorems for multi-bordered, semi-framed, framed, and multi-framed Toeplitz determinants, extending the results of Basor et al. (2022) beyond the (single) bordered Toeplitz case. For the two-bordered and also the semi-framed Toeplitz determinants, we compute the strong Szegő limit theorems associated with certain classes of symbols, and for the $k$-bordered (${k \geq 3}$), framed, and multi-framed Toeplitz determinants we demonstrate the recursive fashion offered by the Dodgson condensation identities via which strong Szegő limit theorems can be obtained. One instance of appearance of semi-framed Toeplitz determinants is in calculations related to the entanglement entropy for disjoint subsystems in the XX spin chain (Brightmore et al. (2020) and Jin-Korepin (2011)). In addition, in the recent work Gharakhloo and Liechty (2024) and in an unpublished work of Professor Nicholas Witte, such determinants have found relevance respectively in the study of ensembles of nonintersecting paths and in the study of off-diagonal correlations of the anisotropic square-lattice Ising model. Besides the intrinsic mathematical interest in these structured determinants, the aforementioned applications have further motivated the study of the present work.

Abstract:It is shown that the polynuclear growth model is a completely integrable Markov process in the sense that its transition probabilities are given by Fredholm determinants of kernels produced by a scattering transform based on the invariant measures modulo the absolute height, continuous time simple random walks. From the linear evolution of the kernels, it is shown that the $n$-point distributions are determinants of $n\times n$ matrices evolving according to the two dimensional non-Abelian Toda lattice.

Toeplitz determinants with a one-cut regular potential and Fisher--Hartwig singularities I. Equilibrium measure supported on the unit circle

Abstract:We consider Toeplitz determinants whose symbol has: (i) a one-cut regular potential $V$, (ii) Fisher--Hartwig singularities, and (iii) a smooth function in the background. The potential $V$ is associated with an equilibrium measure that is assumed to be supported on the whole unit circle. For constant potentials $V$, the equilibrium measure is the uniform measure on the unit circle and our formulas reduce to well-known results for Toeplitz determinants with Fisher--Hartwig singularities. For non-constant $V$, our results appear to be new even in the case of no Fisher--Hartwig singularities. As applications of our results, we derive various statistical properties of a determinantal point process which generalizes the circular unitary ensemble.

On $λ$-determinants and tiling problems

Abstract:We review the connections between the octahedral recurrence, $\lambda$-determinants and tiling problems. This provides in particular a direct combinatorial interpretation of the $\lambda$-determinant (and generalizations thereof) of an arbitrary matrix in terms of domino tilings of Aztec diamonds. We also reinterpret the general Robbins-Rumsey formula for the rational function of consecutive minors, given by a summation over pairs of compatible alternating sign matrices, as the partition function for tilings of Aztec diamonds equipped with a general measure.

Local limits in $p$-adic random matrix theory

Abstract:We study the distribution of singular numbers of products of certain classes of $p$-adic random matrices, as both the matrix size and number of products go to $\infty$ simultaneously. In this limit, we prove convergence of the local statistics to a new random point configuration on $\mathbb{Z}$, defined explicitly in terms of certain intricate mixed $q$-series/exponential sums. This object may be viewed as a nontrivial $p$-adic analogue of the interpolating distributions of Akemann-Burda-Kieburg <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1809.05905" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.05905">arXiv:1809.05905</a>, which generalize the sine and Airy kernels and govern limits of complex matrix products. Our proof uses new Macdonald process computations and holds for matrices with iid additive Haar entries, corners of Haar matrices from $\mathrm{GL}_N(\mathbb{Z}_p)$, and the $p$-adic analogue of Dyson Brownian motion studied in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2112.03725" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.03725">arXiv:2112.03725</a>.

Outliers of perturbations of banded Toeplitz matrices

Abstract:Toeplitz matrices form a rich class of possibly non-normal matrices whose asymptotic spectral analysis in high dimension is well-understood. The spectra of these matrices are notoriously highly sensitive to small perturbations. In this work, we analyze the spectrum of a banded Toeplitz matrix perturbed by a random matrix with iid entries of variance $\sigma_n^2 / n$ in the asymptotic of high dimension and $\sigma_n$ converging to $\sigma \geq 0$. Our results complement and provide new proofs on recent progresses in the case $\sigma = 0$. For any $\sigma \geq 0$, we show that the point process of outlier eigenvalues is governed by a low-dimensional random analytic matrix field, typically Gaussian, alongside an explicit deterministic matrix that captures the algebraic structure of the resonances responsible for the outlier eigenvalues. On our way, we prove a new functional central limit theorem for trace of polynomials in deterministic and random matrices and present new variations around Szego's strong limit theorem.

Asymptotic behaviour of determinants through the expansion of the Moyal star product

Abstract:We work out a generalization of the Szegö limit theorems on the determinant of large matrices. We focus on matrices with nonzero leading principal minors and elements that decay to zero exponentially fast with the distance from the main diagonal, but we relax the constraint of the Toeplitz structure. We obtain an expression for the asymptotic behaviour of the determinant written in terms of the factors of a left and right Wiener-Hopf type factorization of an appropriately defined symbol. For matrices with elements varying slowly along the diagonals (e.g., in locally Toeplitz sequences), we propose to apply the analogue of the semiclassical expansion of the Moyal star product in phase-space quantum mechanics. This is a systematic method that provides approximations up to any order in the typical scale of the inhomogeneity and allows us to obtain explicit asymptotic formulas.

Abstract:Random matrices are used in fields as different as the study of multi-orthogonal polynomials or the enumeration of discrete surfaces. Both of them are based on the study of a matrix integral. However, this term can be confusing since the definition of a matrix integral in these two applications is not the same. These two definitions, perturbative and non-perturbative, are discussed in this chapter as well as their relation. The so-called loop equations satisfied by integrals over random matrices coupled in chain is discussed as well as their recursive solution in the perturbative case when the matrices are Hermitean.
