Abstract:These lectures present a survey of recent developments in the area of random matrices (finite and infinite) and random permutations. These probabilistic problems suggest matrix integrals (or Fredholm determinants), which arise very naturally as integrals over the tangent space to symmetric spaces, as integrals over groups and finally as integrals over symmetric spaces. An important part of these lectures is devoted to showing that these matrix integrals, upon apropriately adding time-parameters, are natural tau-functions for integrable lattices, like the Toda, Pfaff and Toeplitz lattices, but also for integrable PDE's, like the KdV equation. These matrix integrals or Fredholm determinants also satisfy Virasoro constraints, which combined with the integrable equations lead to (partial) differential equations for the original probabilities.

Random Matrices: Theory and Application

Abstract:Random Matrices: Theory and Applications, Ahead of Print. A determinantal point process (DPP) is an ensemble of random nonnegative-integer-valued Radon measures [math] on a space [math] with measure [math], whose correlation functions are all given by determinants specified by an integral kernel [math] called the correlation kernel. We consider a pair of Hilbert spaces, [math], which are assumed to be realized as [math]-spaces, [math], [math], and introduce a bounded linear operator [math] and its adjoint [math]. We show that if [math] is a partial isometry of locally Hilbert–Schmidt class, then we have a unique DPP [math] associated with [math]. In addition, if [math] is also of locally Hilbert–Schmidt class, then we have a unique pair of DPPs, [math], [math]. We also give a practical framework which makes [math] and [math] satisfy the above conditions. Our framework to construct pairs of DPPs implies useful duality relations between DPPs making pairs. For a correlation kernel of a given DPP our formula can provide plural different expressions, which reveal different aspects of the DPP. In order to demonstrate these advantages of our framework as well as to show that the class of DPPs obtained by this method is large enough to study universal structures in a variety of DPPs, we report plenty of examples of DPPs in one-, two- and higher-dimensional spaces [math], where several types of weak convergence from finite DPPs to infinite DPPs are given. One-parameter ([math]) series of infinite DPPs on [math] and [math] are discussed, which we call the Euclidean and the Heisenberg families of DPPs, respectively, following the terminologies of Zelditch.
Determinantal Point Processes in Randomized Numerical Linear Algebra

Abstract:Randomized Numerical Linear Algebra (RandNLA) uses randomness to develop improved algorithms for matrix problems that arise in scientific computing, data science, machine learning, etc. Determinantal Point Processes (DPPs), a seemingly unrelated topic in pure and applied mathematics, is a class of stochastic point processes with probability distribution characterized by sub-determinants of a kernel matrix. Recent work has uncovered deep and fruitful connections between DPPs and RandNLA which lead to new guarantees and improved algorithms that are of interest to both areas. We provide an overview of this exciting new line of research, including brief introductions to RandNLA and DPPs, as well as applications of DPPs to classical linear algebra tasks such as least squares regression, low-rank approximation and the Nyström method. For example, random sampling with a DPP leads to new kinds of unbiased estimators for least squares, enabling more refined statistical and inferential understanding of these algorithms; a DPP is, in some sense, an optimal randomized algorithm for the Nyström method; and a RandNLA technique called leverage score sampling can be derived as the marginal distribution of a DPP. We also discuss recent algorithmic developments, illustrating that, while not quite as efficient as standard RandNLA techniques, DPP-based algorithms are only moderately more expensive.

Abstract:Adding a column of numbers produces "carries" along the way. We show that random digits produce a pattern of carries with a neat probabilistic description: the carries form a one-dependent determinantal point process. This makes it easy to answer natural questions: How many carries are typical? Where are they located? We show that many further examples, from combinatorics, algebra and group theory, have essentially the same neat formulae, and that any one-dependent point process on the integers is determinantal. The examples give a gentle introduction to the emerging fields of one-dependent and determinantal point processes.

Abstract:We consider the behavior of a random stepped surface near a turning point, that is, a point at which the limit shape is not smooth. When the turning point is a smooth point of the frozen boundary, the resulting point process is identified with the standard Gaussian measure on infinite Hermitian matrices. A different point process appears if the turning point is a cusp of the frozen boundary.

Abstract:These lecture notes are a concise introduction of recent techniques to prove local spectral universality for a large class of random matrices. The general strategy is presented following the recent book with H.T. Yau. We extend the scope of this book by focusing on new techniques developed to deal with generalizations of Wigner matrices that allow for non-identically distributed entries and even for correlated entries. This requires to analyze a system of nonlinear equations, or more generally a nonlinear matrix equation called the Matrix Dyson Equation (MDE). We demonstrate that stability properties of the MDE play a central role in random matrix theory. The analysis of MDE is based upon joint works with J. Alt, O. Ajanki, D. Schröder and T. Krüger that are supported by the ERC Advanced Grant, RANMAT 338804 of the European Research Council. The lecture notes were written for the 27th Annual PCMI Summer Session on Random Matrices held in 2017. The current edited version will appear in the IAS/Park City Mathematics Series, Vol. 26.

Abstract:It is well known that there are close connections between non-intersecting processes in one dimension and random matrices, based on the reflection principle. There is a generalisation of the reflection principle for more general (e.g. planar) processes, due to S. Fomin, in which the non-intersection condition is replaced by a condition involving loop-erased paths. In the context of independent Brownian motions in suitable planar domains, this also has close connections to random matrices. An example of this was first observed by Sato and Katori (Phys. Rev. E, 83, 2011). We present further examples which give rise to various Cauchy-type ensembles. We also extend Fomin's identity to the affine setting and show that in this case, by considering independent Brownian motions in an annulus, one obtains a novel interpretation of the circular orthogonal ensemble.

Abstract:Random matrices are used in fields as different as the study of multi-orthogonal polynomials or the enumeration of discrete surfaces. Both of them are based on the study of a matrix integral. However, this term can be confusing since the definition of a matrix integral in these two applications is not the same. These two definitions, perturbative and non-perturbative, are discussed in this chapter as well as their relation. The so-called loop equations satisfied by integrals over random matrices coupled in chain is discussed as well as their recursive solution in the perturbative case when the matrices are Hermitean.

Dynamical correlation functions for products of random matrices

Abstract:We introduce and study a family of random processes with a discrete time related to products of random matrices. Such processes are formed by singular values of random matrix products, and the number of factors in a random matrix product plays a role of a discrete time. We consider in detail the case when the (squared) singular values of the initial random matrix form a polynomial ensemble, and the initial random matrix is multiplied by standard complex Gaussian matrices. In this case we show that the random process is a discrete-time determinantal point process. For three special cases (the case when the initial random matrix is a standard complex Gaussian matrix, the case when it is a truncated unitary matrix, or the case when it is a standard complex Gaussian matrix with a source) we compute the dynamical correlations functions explicitly, and find the hard edge scaling limits of the correlation kernels. The proofs rely on the Eynard-Mehta theorem, and on contour integral representations for the correlation kernels suitable for an asymptotic analysis.

Abstract:The four major asymptotic level density laws of random matrix theory may all be showcased though their Jacobi parameter representation as having a bordered Toeplitz form. We compare and contrast these laws, completing and exploring their representations in one place. Inspired by the bordered Toeplitz form, we propose an algorithm for the finite moment problem by proposing a solution whose density has a bordered Toeplitz form.

Abstract:The evolution of complex correlated quantum systems such as random circuit networks is governed by the dynamical buildup of both entanglement and entropy. We here introduce a real-time field theory approach -- essentially a fusion of the $G \Sigma$-functional of the SYK-model and the field theory of disordered systems -- enigneered to microscopically describe the full range of such crossover dynamics: from initial product states to a maximum entropy ergodic state. To showcase this approach in the simplest nontrivial setting, we consider a tensor product of coupled random matrices, and compare to exact diagonalization.

Abstract:We review the connections between the octahedral recurrence, $\lambda$-determinants and tiling problems. This provides in particular a direct combinatorial interpretation of the $\lambda$-determinant (and generalizations thereof) of an arbitrary matrix in terms of domino tilings of Aztec diamonds. We also reinterpret the general Robbins-Rumsey formula for the rational function of consecutive minors, given by a summation over pairs of compatible alternating sign matrices, as the partition function for tilings of Aztec diamonds equipped with a general measure.

Bordered and Framed Toeplitz and Hankel Determinants with Applications to Integrable Probability

Abstract:Bordered and framed Toeplitz/Hankel determinants have the same structure as Toeplitz/Hankel determinants except in small number of matrix rows and/or columns. We review these structured determinants and their connections to orthogonal polynomials, collecting well-known and perhaps less well-known results. We present some applications for these structured determinants to ensembles of non-intersecting paths and the six-vertex model, with an eye towards asymptotic analysis. We also prove some asymptotic formulae for the probability of non-intersection for an ensemble of continuous time random walks for certain choices of starting and ending points as the number of random walkers tends to infinity.

Abstract:Over the past decades, a great body of theoretical and mathematical work has been devoted to random-matrix descriptions of open quantum systems. This chapter reviews the physical origins and mathematical structures of the underlying models, and collects key predictions which give insight into the typical system behaviour. In particular, the aim is to give an idea how the different features are interlinked. The chapter mainly focuses on elastic scattering but also includes a short detour to interacting systems, which are motivated by the overarching question of ergodicity. The first sections introduce general notions from random matrix theory, such as the 10 universality classes and ensembles of Hermitian, unitary, positive-definite, and non-Hermitian matrices. The following sections then review microscopic scattering models that form the basis for statistical descriptions, and consider signatures of random scattering in decay, dynamics, and transport. The last section touches on Anderson localization and localization in interacting systems.
Local limits in $p$-adic random matrix theory

Abstract:We study the distribution of singular numbers of products of certain classes of $p$-adic random matrices, as both the matrix size and number of products go to $\infty$ simultaneously. In this limit, we prove convergence of the local statistics to a new random point configuration on $\mathbb{Z}$, defined explicitly in terms of certain intricate mixed $q$-series/exponential sums. This object may be viewed as a nontrivial $p$-adic analogue of the interpolating distributions of Akemann-Burda-Kieburg <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1809.05905" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.05905">arXiv:1809.05905</a>, which generalize the sine and Airy kernels and govern limits of complex matrix products. Our proof uses new Macdonald process computations and holds for matrices with iid additive Haar entries, corners of Haar matrices from $\mathrm{GL}_N(\mathbb{Z}_p)$, and the $p$-adic analogue of Dyson Brownian motion studied in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2112.03725" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.03725">arXiv:2112.03725</a>.

Abstract:We present the conditional determinantal point process (DPP) approach to obtain new (mostly Fredholm determinantal) expressions for various eigenvalue statistics in random matrix theory. It is well-known that many (especially $\beta=2$) eigenvalue $n$-point correlation functions are given in terms of $n\times n$ determinants, i.e., they are continuous DPPs. We exploit a derived kernel of the conditional DPP which gives the $n$-point correlation function conditioned on the event of some eigenvalues already existing at fixed locations. Using such kernels we obtain new determinantal expressions for the joint densities of the $k$ largest eigenvalues, probability density functions of the $k^\text{th}$ largest eigenvalue, density of the first eigenvalue spacing, and more. Our formulae are highly amenable to numerical computations and we provide various numerical experiments. Several numerical values that required hours of computing time could now be computed in seconds with our expressions, which proves the effectiveness of our approach. We also demonstrate that our technique can be applied to an efficient sampling of DR paths of the Aztec diamond domino tiling. Further extending the conditional DPP sampling technique, we sample Airy processes from the extended Airy kernel. Additionally we propose a sampling method for non-Hermitian projection DPPs.

Abstract:It is known that determinantal point processes have an intimate relation to operator algebras. In the paper, we extend this relationship to encompass dynamical aspects. Especially, we delve into two types of determinantal point processes. One is related to discrete orthogonal polynomials of hypergeometric type, and another is z -measures, which arise in the asymptotic representation theory of the symmetric groups. Within the framework of operator algebras, we investigate both unitary and stochastic dynamics on these point processes.
