Abstract:Heisenberg's uncertainty principle in application to energy and time is a powerful heuristics. This statement plays the important role in foundations of quantum theory and statistical physics. If some state exists for a finite interval of time, then it cannot have a completely definite value of energy. It is well known that the case of energy and time principally differs from more familiar examples of two non-commuting observables. Since quantum theory was originating, many approaches to energy-time uncertainties have been proposed. Entropic way to formulate the uncertainty principle is currently the subject of active researches. Using the Pegg concept of complementarity of the Hamiltonian, we obtain uncertainty relations of the "energy-time" type in terms of the Rényi and Tsallis entropies. Although this concept is somehow restricted in scope, derived relations can be applied to systems typically used in quantum information processing. Both the state-dependent and state-independent formulations are of interest. Some of the derived state-independent bounds are similar to the results obtained within a more general approach on the basis of sandwiched relative entropies. The developed method allows us to address the case of detection inefficiencies.

Abstract:Heisenberg guessed, after he established the matrix quantum mechanics, that the non-commutativity of the matrices of position and momentum implied that the position and momentum of a particle could not be precisely simultaneously determined. He consequently conjectured that time and energy should also have a similar relationship. Soon after, Robertson derived an inequality concerning the space coordinate and momentum, which was thought to be the mathematical expression of the uncertainty relation guessed by Heisenberg. Since then, people have tried various devices to prove the correctness of these two relations. However, no one conducted a careful analysis of Heisenberg's primary paper. In this work, we point out some serious problems in Heisenberg's paper and the literature talking about the uncertainty relationships: the physical concepts involved in the uncertainty relations are not clear; one physical concept had more than one explanation, i.e., switching concepts; there has never been measurement experiment to support the relations. The conclusions are that the so-called coordinate–momentum uncertainty relation has never been related to actual measurement and there does not exist a time–energy uncertainty relation.

Abstract:The uncertainty relation and the probability interpretation of quantum mechanics are intrinsically connected, as is evidenced by the evaluation of standard deviations. It is thus natural to ask if one can associate a very small uncertainty product of suitably sampled events with a very small probability. We have shown elsewhere that some examples of the evasion of the uncertainty relation noted in the past are in fact understood in this way. We here numerically illustrate that a very small uncertainty product is realized if one performs a suitable sampling of measured data which occur with a very small probability. It is also shown that our analysis is consistent with the Landau-Pollak type uncertainty relation. It is suggested that the present analysis may help reconcile the contradicting views about the "standard quantum limit" in the detection of gravitational waves.

Abstract:The time-energy uncertainty relation in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics has been intensely debated with regard to its formal derivation, validity, and physical meaning. Here, we analyze two formal relations proposed by Mandelstam and Tamm and by Margolus and Levitin and evaluate their validity using a minimal quantum toy model composed of a single qubit inside an external magnetic field. We show that the $\ell_1$ norm of energy coherence $\mathcal{C}$ is invariant with respect to the unitary evolution of the quantum state. Thus, the $\ell_1$ norm of energy coherence $\mathcal{C}$ of an initial quantum state is useful for the classification of the ability of quantum observables to change in time or the ability of the quantum state to evolve into an orthogonal state. In the single-qubit toy model, for quantum states with the submaximal $\ell_1$ norm of energy coherence, $\mathcal{C}<1$, the Mandelstam-Tamm and Margolus-Levitin relations generate instances of infinite "time uncertainty" that is devoid of physical meaning. Only for quantum states with the maximal $\ell_1$ norm of energy coherence, $\mathcal{C}=1$, the Mandelstam-Tamm and Margolus-Levitin relations avoid infinite "time uncertainty", but they both reduce to a strict equality that expresses the Einstein-Planck relation between energy and frequency. The presented results elucidate the fact that the time in the Schrödinger equation is a scalar variable that commutes with the quantum Hamiltonian and is not subject to statistical variance.

Abstract:The time energy uncertainty relation has been a controversial issue since the advent of quantum theory, with respect to appropriate formalisation, validity and possible meanings. A comprehensive account of the development of this subject up to the 1980s is provided by a combination of the reviews of Jammer (1974), Bauer and Mello (1978), and Busch (1990). More recent reviews are concerned with different specific aspects of the subject. The purpose of this chapter is to show that different types of time energy uncertainty relation can indeed be deduced in specific contexts, but that there is no unique universal relation that could stand on equal footing with the position-momentum uncertainty relation. To this end, we will survey the various formulations of a time energy uncertainty relation, with a brief assessment of their validity, and along the way we will indicate some new developments that emerged since the 1990s.

It can be used to facilitate the discussion of several profound questions, such as computational capacity and thermodynamic properties of the universe and the origin of holographic dark energy. Abstract:Associate Professor Hasegawa Yuji of the Vienna University of Technology and Professor Masaaki Ozawa of Nagoya University and other scholars published empirical results against Heisenberg's uncertainty principle on January 15, 2012.They got a measurement result with a smaller error than the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which proved the measurement advocated by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.This article follows the method I used to study super-radiation and connects the uncertainty principle with the super-radiation effect. I found that under the super-radiation effect, the measurement limit of the uncertainty principle can be smaller.

Abstract:It is well known that the problem of divergence in the physical interpretation of quantum mechanics originating from the uncertainty principle has not yet been resolved. Attempting to clear the constraints and confusion of this situation for the further development of quantum technology, this article traces the original derivation and the physical meaning of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, analyzes the Einstein photon-box thought-experiment, and studies the limits of the relationships under different action scenarios. By analyzing the statistical distribution of quantum mechanical quantities, the result of the destruction of the non-statistical interpretation uncertainty relation in the electromagnetic interaction scenarios is obtained; through analyzing of the photon box thought experiment, the logical contradiction of Bohr's argument was discovered; by examining the set of interaction scenarios, a description method for determining the mechanical state of microscopic particles was put forward; according to the analysis of the hydrogen atom transition radiation process, basing on the principle of conservation of energy, the result of the lower limit of the uncertainty relation in the gravitational scene is much smaller than that in the existing electromagnetic scene is obtained, which mean the lower limit of uncertainty principle is broken. The research in this article has received an affirmative answer to Einstein's God does not play dice with the Universe. The research of this article is helpful to enhance the understanding of quantum physical phenomena in the microscopic world, and we hope it could render some theoretical support to investigating the physical basis of quantum technology.

Abstract:This paper explores the consequences of discretization of space in quantum mechanics. Specifically, I show that under normal conditions in space where the wave function is uniform across a quantum of space, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is identically satisfied, where the "normal conditions" are defined as with characterizing the size of a quantum of position space or equivalently with characterizing the size of a quantum of momentum space (this limiting behavior is also at the core of Nyquist sampling theorem; see Jerri (1977); Vaidyanathan (IEEE Trans. Circ. Syst. I Fundam. Theory Appl. 48 (9), 1094–1109, 2001); Ozaktas et al. (2001)). Moreover, I derive an equation similar to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle which imposes a constraint on the minimum values of "precision" of space (i.e. the maximum values for and ). Additionally, I show that in discretized space the simultaneous minimum position and minimum momentum uncertainties are unphysical.

Abstract:The new uncertainty relation is derived in the context of the canonical quantum theory with gravity for the case of the maximally symmetric space. This relation establishes a connection between fluctuations of the quantities which determine the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures of the spacelike hypersurface in spacetime and introduces the uncertainty principle for quantum gravitational systems. The generalized time-energy uncertainty relation, which takes into account gravity, is proposed. It is shown that known Unruh's uncertainty relation follows, as a particular case, from the new uncertainty relation. As an example, the sizes of fluctuations of the scale factor and its conjugate momentum are calculated within an exactly solvable model. All known modifications of the uncertainty principle deduced previously from different approaches in the theory of gravity and string theory are obtained as particular cases of the proposed general expression.

Abstract:I explain in what sense the structure of space and time is probably vague or indefinite, a notion I define. This leads to the mathematical representation of location in space and time by a vague interval. From this, a principle of complementary inaccuracy between spatial location and velocity is derived, and its relation to the Uncertainty Principle discussed. In addition, even if the laws of nature are deterministic, the behaviour of systems will be random to some degree. These and other considerations draw classical physics closer to Quantum Mechanics. An arrow of entropy is also derived, given an arrow of time. Lastly, chaos is given an additional, objective meaning.

Abstract:As a foundation of quantum physics, uncertainty relations describe ultimate limit for the measurement uncertainty of incompatible observables. Traditionally, uncertainty relations are formulated by mathematical bounds for a specific state. Here we present a method for geometrically characterizing uncertainty relations as an entire area of variances of the observables, ranging over all possible input states. We find that for the pair of position and momentum operators, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle points exactly to the attainable area of the variances of position and momentum. Moreover, for finite-dimensional systems, we prove that the corresponding area is necessarily semialgebraic; in other words, this set can be represented via finite polynomial equations and inequalities, or any finite union of such sets. In particular, we give the analytical characterization of the areas of variances of (a) a pair of one-qubit observables and (b) a pair of projective observables for arbitrary dimension, and give the first experimental observation of such areas in a photonic system.

Abstract:Some of the possible consequences of a generalized uncertainty principle (which emerges in the context of string theory and quantum gravity models as a consequence of fluctuations of the background metric) are analyzed considering the case of a quantum particle immersed in a homogeneous gravitational field. It will be shown that the expectation value of the momentum operator depends in a novel way on the mass of the involved particle. This kind of physical characteristics could be, in principle, detected. In other words, one way of confronting against the experiment some of the models around quantum gravity is given by the detection of the dependence upon the mass parameter of the expectation value of the momentum operator.

Abstract:We study the variance in the measurement of observables during scattering events, as computed using amplitudes. The classical regime, characterised by negligible uncertainty, emerges as a consequence of an infinite set of relationships among multileg, multiloop amplitudes in a momentum-transfer expansion. We discuss two non-trivial examples in detail: the six-point tree and the five-point one-loop amplitudes in scalar QED. We interpret these relationships in terms or a coherent exponentiation of radiative effects in the classical limit which generalises the eikonal formula, and show how to recover the impulse, including radiation reaction, from this generalised eikonal. Finally, we incorporate the physics of spin into our framework.

Abstract:We show how a number of well-known uncertainty principles for the Fourier transform, such as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the Donoho–Stark uncertainty principle, and Meshulam’s nonabelian uncertainty principle, have little to do with the structure of the Fourier transform itself. Rather, all of these results follow from very weak properties of the Fourier transform (shared by numerous linear operators), namely that it is bounded as an operator L1→L∞L^1 \rightarrow L^\infty, and that it is unitary. Using a single, simple proof template, and only these (or weaker) properties, we obtain some new proofs and many generalizations of these basic uncertainty principles, to new operators and to new settings, in a completely unified way. Together with our general overview, this paper can also serve as a survey of the many facets of the phenomena known as uncertainty principles.

Abstract:Several models of quantum gravity predict the emergence of a minimal length at Planck scale. This is commonly taken into consideration by modifying the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle into the Generalized Uncertainty Principle. In this work, we study the implications of a polynomial Generalized Uncertainty Principle on the harmonic oscillator. We revisit both the analytic and algebraic methods, deriving the exact form of the generalized Heisenberg algebra in terms of the new position and momentum operators. We show that the energy spectrum and eigenfunctions are affected in a non-trivial way. Furthermore, a new set of ladder operators is derived which factorize the Hamiltonian exactly. The above formalism is finally exploited to construct a quantum field theoretic toy model based on the Generalized Uncertainty Principle.

Abstract:A proper deformation of the underlying coordinate and momentum commutation relations in quantum mechanics provides a phenomenological approach to account for the influence of gravity on small scales. Introducing the squared momentum term results in a generalized uncertainty principle, which limits the minimum uncertainty in particle position to the Planck length. However, such a deformation of the commutator significantly changes the formalism, making it separate from the canonical formalism of quantum mechanics. In this study, it is shown that the deformed algebra of position and momentum operators can be incorporated into the framework of ordinary quantum mechanics.
