Abstract:Motivated by strategies for targeted microfluidic transport of droplets, we investigate how sessile droplets can be steered toward a preferred direction using travelling waves in substrate wettability or deformations of the substrate. To perform our numerical study, we implement the boundary-element method to solve the governing Stokes equations for the fluid flow field inside the moving droplet. In both cases we find two distinct modes of droplet motion. For small wave speed the droplet surfs with a constant velocity on the wave, while beyond a critical wave speed a periodic wobbling motion occurs, the period of which diverges at the transition. These observation can be rationalized by the nonuniform oscillator model and the transition described by a SNIPER bifurcation. For the travelling waves in wettability the mean droplet velocity in the wobbling state decays with the inverse wave speed. In contrast, for travelling-wave deformations of the substrate it is proportional to the wave speed at large speed values since the droplet always has to move up and down. To rationalize this behavior, the nonuniform oscillator model has to be extended. Since the critical wave speed of the bifurcation depends on the droplet radius, this dependence can be used to sort droplets by size.

Steerable directional bouncing and contact time reduction of impacting droplets on superhydrophobic stepped surfaces

Abstract:Hypothesis: The unbalanced capillary force provided by wettability patterns, non-uniform/asymmetric microtextures enables directional droplet transport, while macrotextures have shown potentials in reducing the contact time. Inspired by these findings, we design millimeter superhydrophobic stepped surfaces to simultaneously achieve highly steerable directional bouncing and contact time reduction of impacting droplets. Experiments: The stepped surfaces are fabricated by computerized numerical control, chemical oxidation, hydrophobic treatment. Systematic impact experiments are conducted under Weber number ranging from 10.5 to 20.5, two step heights (0.5 mm and 1.0 mm) and extensive impact positions. Findings: Compared with known microtextured surfaces, the stepped surfaces exhibit excellent performance with the maximum lateral movement distance about 8 times of droplet radius, controllable rebound angle ranging from ∼ 32° to ∼ 90° and up to ∼ 30 % reduction in contact time. Particularly, we divide the directional bouncing characteristics into six regimes and attribute the variation of rebound velocity by the synergistic effects of viscous dissipation, excess surface energy, excess kinetic energy. It is demonstrated that the contact time is reduced by liquid mass redistribution and asymmetry enhancement. Predictive models of contact time that incorporate the coupling effects of impact position, impact velocity and step height are also established.

Abstract:<p>Directional transportation of liquid droplets plays a significant role in various processes including anti‐fogging, anti‐icing, and materials transportation. Diverse strategies have been developed to achieve lateral bouncing of impacting droplets. However, due to the complexity of the interactions on the interface between a droplet and the solid, quantitatively manipulating the directional movement of the droplet still remains challenging. Here, it is proposed that the directional transportation of a droplet with precise controllability can be achieved by impacting it on a heterogenously wettable surface. It is found that the droplet lateral momentum correlates with the surface area of a geometric region that depends on the position‐coupling between the droplet maximum spreading and the wettability pattern. The well‐controlled droplet directional movement has generality for different Weber numbers and diverse superhydrophilic patterns. Based on this principle, functional materials are orientated to achieve precise positioning of regents for demand‐on chemical reactions, and micro‐floats are driven with different moving velocities. It offers a promising strategy for accurate droplet manipulation based on patterned wettability, which shows great potential in applications such as functional materials transportation, microfluidics, and energy collection and utilization.</p>

Abstract:Liquid droplets on patterned hydrophobic substrates are typically observed either in the Wenzel or the Cassie state. Here we show that for droplets of comparable size to the roughness scale an additional local equilibrium state exists, where the droplet is immersed in the texture, but not yet contacts the bottom grooves. Upon evaporation, a droplet in this state enters the Cassie state, leading to a qualitatively new self-cleaning mechanism. The effect is of generic character and is expected to occur in any hydrophobic capillary wetting situation where a spherical liquid reservoir is involved.

Abstract:Three-dimensional droplet dynamics on surfaces with non-uniform wettability were investigated based on an improved lattice Boltzmann method(LBM)for multiphase flows.Both the accuracy and numerical stability were improved in this model.Droplet spreading and movement on surfaces with non-uniform wettability was analyzed.The mechanism of droplet movement and splitting under the action of wettability gradient was illustrated based on the analysis of velocity field during the droplet splitting process.

Abstract:Directed droplet manipulation is paramount in various applications, including chemical micro-reaction and biomedical analysis. The existing strategies include some kinds of gradients (structure, inherent wettability, and charge density), whereas they suffer from several limitations, such as low velocity, limited volume range, poor durability, and inefficient environmental suitability. Moreover, active bi-directional reversal of omni-droplets remains challenging because one kind of microstructure at a single scale cannot acquire two kinds of net results of mechanical interaction. Herein, we report an active and directional steering of omni-droplets utilizing bi-directional (vertical and horizontal) vibration on slippery cross-scale structures consisting of macro millimeter-scale circular arc arrays and micro/nanometer-scale slant ratchet arrays, which are fabricated by femtosecond laser patterned oblique etching and lubricant infusion. The physical mechanism of active droplet steering lies in the relative competition between the forces under vertical and horizontal vibration, which mainly arise from the circular arc arrays and slant ratchet arrays, respectively. Various steering modes, including climbing and programmable manipulation, can be realized. Our work is applicable to a wide range of potential applications, including circuit on/off and droplet-based chemical micro-reaction, particularly in the field of high-throughput omni-droplets operation.

Abstract:When a drop of water is placed on a rough surface, there are two possible extreme regimes of wetting: the one called Cassie-Baxter (CB) with air pockets trapped underneath the droplet and the one characterized by the homogeneous wetting of the surface, called the Wenzel (W) state. A way to investigate the transition between these two states is by means of evaporation experiments, in which the droplet starts in a CB state and, as its volume decreases, penetrates the surface's grooves, reaching a W state. Here we present a theoretical model based on the global interfacial energies for CB and W states that allows us to predict the thermodynamic wetting state of the droplet for a given volume and surface texture. We first analyze the influence of the surface geometric parameters on the droplet's final wetting state with constant volume, and show that it depends strongly on the surface texture. We then vary the volume of the droplet keeping fixed the geometric surface parameters to mimic evaporation and show that the drop experiences a transition from the CB to the W state when its volume reduces, as observed in experiments. To investigate the dependency of the wetting state on the initial state of the droplet, we implement a cellular Potts model in three dimensions. Simulations show a very good agreement with theory when the initial state is W, but it disagrees when the droplet is initialized in a CB state, in accordance with previous observations which show that the CB state is metastable in many cases. Both simulations and theoretical model can be modified to study other types of surface.

Abstract:To study the structural characteristics and physical properties of droplets sitting on the inclined substrates and cylindrical surfaces, wetting experiments are conducted in different cases. The profile curves of the droplets are recorded and extracted by a CCD camera and image processing, respectively. Contact angles are figured out by fitting the profile curves and taking the derivative at the front and rear triple points. Based on the experimental results, a Surface Evolver is employed to simulate the morphological changes by minimizing the total energy of the system. Furthermore, theoretical shapes and feature parameters, including the heights and the spreading distances of the droplets, which are hard to obtain by normal experimental measurements are provided. The contact-angle hysteresis when the heavy droplet sitting on the inclined substrate is discussed. Meanwhile, the evolutions of the contour of the three-phase contact line are predicted when heavy droplets spread on the convex and concave cylindrical surfaces, respectively. This study provides a finite-element analysis method to describe the surface properties of molten droplets on different substrates, and the simulation results agree well with the experimental results.

Abstract:Significance Step emulsification is one of the few methods that enables upscaled production of droplets with a monodispersity desired for many industrial processes. However, the physical mechanisms of the droplet formation process are poorly understood. We study the droplet breakup by experiments and simulations and find a simple theory predicting the transition from dripping to jetting and the minimal contact angle of α = 2π/3 = 120° for which droplets form. These results have important consequences for the development and design of novel microfluidic systems and reactors that address the growing demand for tools to manipulate fluids at the submillimeter scale.

Abstract:Surfaces with nonuniform wettability have attracted much attention recently due to their academic significance and applications in droplet lateral motion. In this study, numerical simulations and theoretical analyses are conducted to investigate the dynamic behaviors of a droplet impacting on a wettability-patterned surface, in which the superhydrophobic substrate is decorated with a hydrophilic pattern. An improved diffuse interface method coupled with the adaptive mesh-refinement technique and Kistler dynamic contact angle model is adopted to capture the interfacial evolution. After the validation of the numerical method, the dynamic mechanisms of impacting droplets are explored by analyzing the variation of the contact line and velocity profile. Then, systematic simulations are conducted using hydrophilic patterns with different geometric parameters. And the parameter of effective retraction area S is introduced to quantify the wettability patterns. On this basis, the general rules between the patterns and droplet lateral motion are established, and the design principles of hydrophilic patterns are obtained. The numerical results indicate that arc-shape hydrophilic patterns are more appropriate for realizing the droplet lateral motion, which can produce a larger lateral velocity and less residual liquid. In addition, the relevant motion parameters of the droplet are predicted more accurately by using the previous theoretical method. And the mechanism of energy transformation and dissipation is further revealed. Moreover, a simple and practical model is proposed to predict the lateral velocity using the effective retraction area.
Slip-Mediated Dewetting of Polymer Microdroplets

Abstract:Classical hydrodynamic models predict that infinite work is required to move a three-phase contact line, defined here as the line where a liquid/vapor interface intersects a solid surface. Assuming a slip boundary condition, in which the liquid slides against the solid, such an unphysical prediction is avoided. In this article, we present the results of experiments in which a contact line moves and where slip is a dominating and controllable factor. Spherical cap shaped polystyrene microdroplets, with non-equilibrium contact angle, are placed on solid self-assembled monolayer coatings from which they dewet. The relaxation is monitored using \textit{in situ} atomic force microscopy. We find that slip has a strong influence on the droplet evolutions, both on the transient non-spherical shapes and contact line dynamics. The observations are in agreement with scaling analysis and boundary element numerical integration of the governing Stokes equations, including a Navier slip boundary condition.

A simulation method for the wetting dynamics of liquid droplets on deformable membranes

Abstract:Biological cells utilize membranes and liquid-like droplets, known as biomolecular condensates, to structure their interior. The interaction of droplets and membranes, despite being involved in several key biological processes, is so far little understood. Here, we present a first numerical method to simulate the continuum dynamics of droplets interacting with deformable membranes via wetting. The method combines the advantages of the phase-field method for multi-phase flow simulation and the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method for an explicit description of the elastic surface. The model is thermodynamically consistent, coupling bulk hydrodynamics with capillary forces, as well as bending, tension, and stretching of a thin membrane. The method is validated by comparing simulations for single droplets to theoretical results of shape equations, and its capabilities are illustrated in 2D and 3D axisymmetric scenarios.

Abstract:Structured surfaces with micro and nanostructures have shown great potential for a wide range of applications, such as self-cleaning, deicing, and drag reduction. Previous research has extensively explored the interactions between droplets and microstructures, particularly in terms of Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel states. However, there is still a notable gap in systematically studying the interactions between droplets and various types of geometrical boundary features. In this study, we employed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how different geometric boundary features affect the wetting behavior and motion of water droplets. Our detailed analysis led to the derivation of a formula to calculate the critical contact angle for a droplet interacting with any geometric boundary feature from a mechanical perspective. Based on these findings, we successfully controlled motion direction of water droplets along a separation membrane. We observed that due to the influence of geometric boundary features at the holes, droplets exhibited unidirectional motion on the separation membrane. By considering the influence of geometric boundary features, our research provides valuable insights for preventing wetting transition, enhancing the storage of lubricating oil in grooves, facilitating efficient oil–water separation, and regulating fluid flow in microchannels.

Abstract:Wetting behavior of a water droplet on nanostructured surfaces is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the equilibrium states can be classified into four categories: the Wenzel, the metastable Cassie, the globally steady Cassie, and the Cross state. For the Wenzel state, the equilibrium state is independent of the initial state of the water droplet, and always in the Wenzel state no matter if the initial state is the Wenzel or the Cassie state. For the metastable Cassie state, the equilibrium state is dependent on the initial state: the equilibrium state presents as the Cassie state only when the initial state is the Cassie state, otherwise it presents as the Wenzel state. For the globally steady Cassie state, it is always in an equilibrium state of the Cassie state regardless of the initial state, which indicates that the transition from the Wenzel to the Cassie state can spontaneously happen. The results also show that the equilibrium state remains unchanged with the droplet size increasing for these three states. The Cross state is a state that can only be found on nanostructured surfaces, and the existence of this state should be attributed to the structured water molecules in the nanostructures. Furthermore, calculation from a criterion derived from a continuum mechanical analysis for the Cassie state is given, and the results demonstrate that the predictions from the criteria for the Cassie state agree with the results from molecular dynamics simulation for the globally steady Cassie state.

Abstract:When a droplet impacts a solid with a heterogeneous wettability surface, the generated asymmetric forces can manipulate the droplet, and its counterforces can also actuate the solid in theory. In this study, a water droplet impacting a movable hydrophobic substrate, which is decorated with a hydrophilic stripe and restrained by two linear dampers, is studied numerically. After preliminarily checking the effects of the solid mass and damping coefficient of linear dampers, the dynamic mechanisms of solid motion are explored by analysing the variations in the lateral force and instantaneous displacement distance of the solid. After that, the effects of the impact parameters on the solid lateral motion are mainly investigated, including the initial droplet diameter, impact velocity and offset distance between the impact point and hydrophilic stripe. On this basis, the reciprocating solid motion under successive droplet impacts is studied, and periodic motion with different amplitudes can be realized under appropriate impact conditions. The obtained results can shed some fresh insight into the potential applications of droplet–solid interactions, which are valuable for the collection and utilization of energy from natural environments.
Stiffness-guided motion of a droplet on a solid substrate

Abstract:A range of technologies require the directed motion of nanoscale droplets on solid substrates. A way of realizing this effect is durotaxis, whereby a stiffness gradient of a substrate can induce directional motion without requiring an energy source. Here, we report on the results of extensive molecular dynamics investigations of droplets on a surface with varying stiffness. We find that durotaxis is enhanced by increasing the stiffness gradient and, also, by increased wettability of the substrate, in particular, when droplet size decreases. We anticipate that our study will provide further insights into the mechanisms of nanoscale directional motion.

Abstract:<p>Controllable wetting transition on artificial microtextured surfaces has significant applications in many industrial fields. In this work, the droplet spreading and the directional wetting transition are investigated on the substrate surface with the patterned microcavities. The results show that the macroscopic inward wetting transition from the periphery to the center of the droplet strongly depends on the mesoscopic sequential transition from Cassie to Wenzel state in the microcavities on the substrate surfaces. The semiquantitative relationship between sagging depth of meniscus in the microcavities and the droplet spreading velocity is set up by utilizing scaling-law analysis in terms of mechanical equilibrium of the meniscus. This finding is expected to help to clarify the issues on the mechanism and main affecting factors of the wetting transition on the patterned surface.</p>

Abstract:Dropwise condensation on rough structures with different wettability are numerically simulated using Lattice Boltzmann method. The latent heat during condensation process together with the energy equation is taken into consideration in this paper by solving the temperature distribution equation with a source term for the phase change. Typical droplet nucleation positions and wetting states are found out at different surface wettability through numerical results. It is concluded that with the increase of strength coefficient of the fluid-solid interaction or surface hydrophobicity, the nucleation position rises from the bottom to top of the pillar, and the wetting state of droplet changes from the wetting Wenzel state to the nonwetting Cassie one. Abstract:Under partial wetting conditions, making a substrate uniformly rougher enhances the wetting characteristics of the corresponding smooth substrate-hydrophilic systems become even more hydrophilic and hydrophobic systems even more hydrophobic. Here we show theoretically that spatial texturing of the substrate topography may lead to spontaneous propulsion of droplets. Individual droplets tend to be driven toward regions of maximal roughness for intrinsically hydrophilic systems and toward regions of minimal roughness for intrinsically hydrophobic systems. Spatial texturing can be achieved by patterning the substrate with sinusoidal wrinkles whose wavelength varies in one direction (inhomogeneous wrinkling) or lithographically etching a radial pattern of fractal (Koch curve) grooves on the substrate. Richer energy landscapes for droplet trajectories can be designed by combining texturing of spatial topography with chemical or material patterning of the substrate.
