Abstract:We have considered the persistence of unvisited sites of a lattice, i.e., the probability $S(t)$ that a site remains unvisited till time $t$ in presence of mutually repulsive random walkers. The dynamics of this system has direct correspondence to that of the domain walls in a certain system of Ising spins where the number of domain walls become fixed following a zero termperature quench. Here we get the result that $S(t) \propto \exp(-\alpha t^{\beta})$ where $\beta$ is close to 0.5 and $\alpha$ a function of the density of the walkers $\rho$. The number of persistent sites in presence of independent walkers of density $\rho^\prime$ is known to be $S^\prime (t) = \exp(-2 \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi}} \rho^\prime t^{1/2})$. We show that a mapping of the interacting walkers' problem to the independent walkers' problem is possible with $\rho^\prime = \rho/(1-\rho)$ provided $\rho^\prime, \rho$ are small. We also discuss some other intricate results obtained in the interacting walkers' case.

Abstract:We consider lattice self-avoiding walks and discuss the dynamic critical behavior of two dynamics that use local and bilocal moves and generalize the usual reptation dynamics. We determine the integrated and exponential autocorrelation times for several observables, perform a dynamic finite-size scaling study of the autocorrelation functions, and compute the associated dynamic critical exponents $z$. For the variables that describe the size of the walks, in the absence of interactions we find $z \approx 2.2$ in two dimensions and $z\approx 2.1$ in three dimensions. At the $\theta$-point in two dimensions we have $z\approx 2.3$.

Abstract:The discrete stochastic dynamics of a random walker in the presence of resetting and memory is analyzed. Resetting and memory effects may compete in certain parameter regimes, and lead to significant changes in the long-time dynamics of the walker. Analytic exact results are obtained for a model memory where the walker remembers all the past events equally. In most cases, resetting effects dominate at long times and dictate the asymptotic dynamics. The random walk of intermittently self-propelled particles

Abstract:Motivated by various recent experimental findings, we propose a dynamical model of intermittently self-propelled particles: active particles that recurrently switch between two modes of motion, namely an active run-state and a turn state, in which self-propulsion is absent. The durations of these motility modes are derived from arbitrary waiting-time distributions. We derive the expressions for exact forms of transport characteristics like mean-square displacements and diffusion coefficients to describe such processes. Furthermore, the conditions for the emergence of sub- and superdiffusion in the long-time limit are presented. We give examples of some important processes that occur as limiting cases of our system, including run-and-tumble motion of bacteria, Lévy walks, hop-and-trap dynamics, intermittent diffusion and continuous time random walks.

Weakly self-avoiding walk in a pareto-distributed random potential

Abstract:We investigate a model of continuous-time simple random walk paths in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ undergoing two competing interactions: an attractive one towards the large values of a random potential, and a self-repellent one in the spirit of the well-known weakly self-avoiding random walk. We take the potential to be i.i.d.~Pareto-distributed with parameter $\alpha>d$, and we tune the strength of the interactions in such a way that they both contribute on the same scale as $t\to\infty$. Our main results are (1) the identification of the logarithmic asymptotics of the partition function of the model in terms of a random variational formula, and, (2) the identification of the path behaviour that gives the overwhelming contribution to the partition function for $\alpha>2d$: the random-walk path follows an optimal trajectory that visits each of a finite number of random lattice sites for a positive random fraction of time. We prove a law of large numbers for this behaviour, i.e., that all other path behaviours give strictly less contribution to the partition function. The joint distribution of the variational problem and of the optimal path can be expressed in terms of a limiting Poisson point process arising by a rescaling of the random potential. The latter convergence is in distribution and is in the spirit of a standard extreme-value setting for a rescaling of an i.i.d. potential in large boxes, like in \cite{KLMS09}.

Abstract:We quantify superdiffusive transience for a two-dimensional random walk in which the vertical coordinate is a martingale and the horizontal coordinate has a positive drift that is a polynomial function of the individual coordinates and of the present time. We describe how the model was motivated through an heuristic connection to a self-interacting, planar random walk which interacts with its own centre of mass via an excluded-volume mechanism, and is conjectured to be superdiffusive with a scale exponent $3/4$. The self-interacting process originated in discussions with Francis Comets.

Repelling Random Walks

Abstract:We present a novel quasi-Monte Carlo mechanism to improve graph-based sampling, coined repelling random walks. By inducing correlations between the trajectories of an interacting ensemble such that their marginal transition probabilities are unmodified, we are able to explore the graph more efficiently, improving the concentration of statistical estimators whilst leaving them unbiased. The mechanism has a trivial drop-in implementation. We showcase the effectiveness of repelling random walks in a range of settings including estimation of graph kernels, the PageRank vector and graphlet concentrations. We provide detailed experimental evaluation and robust theoretical guarantees. To our knowledge, repelling random walks constitute the first rigorously studied quasi-Monte Carlo scheme correlating the directions of walkers on a graph, inviting new research in this exciting nascent domain.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a model for a $1+1$ dimensional self-interacting and partially directed self-avoiding walk, usually referred to by the acronym IPDSAW. The interaction intensity and the free energy of the system are denoted by $\beta$ and $f$, respectively. The IPDSAW is known to undergo a collapse transition at $\beta_c$. We provide the precise asymptotic of the free energy close to criticality, that is we show that $f(\beta_c-\epsilon)\sim \gamma \epsilon^{3/2}$ where $\gamma$ is computed explicitly and interpreted in terms of an associated continuous model. We also establish some path properties of the random walk inside the collapsed phase $(\beta>\beta_c)$. We prove that the geometric conformation adopted by the polymer is made of a succession of long vertical stretches that attract each other to form a unique macroscopic bead, we identify the horizontal extension of the random walk inside the collapsed phase and we establish the convergence of the rescaled envelope of the macroscopic bead towards a deterministic Wulff shape.

Abstract:We analyze a one-dimensional intermittent random walk on an unbounded domain in the presence of stochastic resetting. In this process, the walker alternates between local intensive search, diffusion, and rapid ballistic relocations in which it does not react to the target. We demonstrate that Poissonian resetting leads to the existence of a non-equilibrium steady state. We calculate the distribution of the first arrival time to a target along with its mean and show the existence of an optimal reset rate. In particular, we prove that the initial condition of the walker, i.e., either starting diffusely or relocating, can significantly affect the long-time properties of the search process. Moreover, we demonstrate the presence of distinct parameter regimes for the global optimization of the mean first arrival time when ballistic and diffusive movements are in direct competition. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.034103 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We examine the diffusive dynamics of a lattice random walk subject to resetting in a one-dimensional spatially heterogeneous environment composed of two media separated by an interface. At random times the walker may reset its position to the interface, but only when in the left medium. In addition the spatial heterogeneity results from having unequal diffusivities and biases in the two media. We construct the Master equation for the dynamics of the walker occupation probability in unbounded space, solve it exactly in terms of generating functions, and analyse the dynamics of the first and second moment. Making use of the closed form solution in the unbounded case, we build the analytic solution of the Master equation in finite and semi-infinite domains. By bounding the space on the right with a reflecting boundary we study the first-passage dynamics to a single fully absorbing target placed in the left medium away from the interface. As reset strongly increases the time to reach the target, we find that the first-passage dynamics enter the motion-limited regime even for relative small resetting probability. We also identify a surprising non-monotonic dependence of the first-passage probability mode as a function of the bias. By deriving an analytic expression for the mean first-passage time, we show when its value is independent of the diffusivity and bias in the left medium, uncovering another example of the so-called mean disorder indifference phenomenon.

Abstract:It is usually expected that time delays cause oscillations in dynamical systems-there might appear cycles around stationary points. Here we study random walks with asymmetric time delays. In our models, the probability of a walker to move to the right or to the left depends on the difference between two state-dependent fitness functions evaluated at two different times. We observe a different behavior-a dependence of the mean position of the walker on time delays. Moreover, the effect of time delays is reversed when one shifts (in a symmetric way) fitness functions. This is a joint effect of both stochasticity and time delays present in the system. The position of a random walker may be interpreted as a frequency of a given strategy in discrete replicator dynamics of evolutionary games. Then our results show that the effect of asymmetric time delays on the equilibrium structure of a population depends not only on time delays, but also on details of the fitness functions.

Abstract:Active walker models have proved to be extremely effective in understanding the evolution of a large class of systems in biology like ant trail formation and pedestrian trails. We propose a simple model of a random walker which modifies its local environment that in turn influences the motion of the walker at a {\em later} time. We perform direct numerical simulations of the walker in a discrete lattice with the walker actively depositing a chemical which attracts the walker trajectory and also evaporates in time. We propose a method to look at the structural transitions of the trajectory using radius of gyration for finite time walks. The extension over a definite time-window shows a non-monotonic change with the deposition rate characteristic of a coil-globule transition. At certain regions of the parameter space of the chemical deposition and evaporation rates, the extensions of the walker shows a re-entrant behavior. The dynamics, characterised by the mean-squared displacement, shows deviation from diffusive scaling at intermediate time scales, returning to diffusive behavior asymptotically. A mean field theory captures the variation of the asymptotic diffusivity.

Random walks on random walks: non-perturbative results in high dimensions

Abstract:Consider the dynamic environment governed by a Poissonian field of independent particles evolving as simple random walks on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The random walk on random walks model refers to a particular stochastic process on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ whose evolution at time $t$ depends on the number of such particles at its location. We derive classical limit theorems for this instrumental model of a random walk in a dynamic random environment, applicable in sufficiently high dimensions. More precisely, for $d \geq 5$, we prove a strong law of large numbers and large deviation estimates. Further, for $d\geq 9$, we obtain a functional central limit theorem under the annealed law. These results are non-perturbative in the sense that they hold for any positive density of the Poissonian field. Under the aforementioned assumptions on the dimension they therefore improve on previous work on the model. Moreover, they stand in contrast to the anomalous behaviour predicted in low dimensions.

Abstract:The self-repelling random walk with directed edges was introduced by Tóth and Vető in 2008 as a nearest-neighbor random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ that is non-Markovian: at each step, the probability to cross a directed edge depends on the number of previous crossings of this directed edge. Tóth and Vető found this walk to have a very peculiar behavior, and conjectured that, denoting the walk by $(X_m)_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$, for any $t \geq 0$ the quantity $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}X_{\lfloor Nt \rfloor}$ converges in distribution to a non-trivial limit when $N$ tends to $+\infty$, but the process $(\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}X_{\lfloor Nt \rfloor})_{t \geq 0}$ does not converge in distribution. In this paper, we prove not only that $(\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}X_{\lfloor Nt \rfloor})_{t \geq 0}$ admits no limit in distribution in the standard Skorohod topology, but more importantly that the trajectories of the random walk still satisfy another limit theorem, of a new kind. Indeed, we show that for $n$ suitably smaller than $N$ and $T_N$ in a large family of stopping times, the process $(\frac{1}{n}(X_{T_N+tn^{3/2}}-X_{T_N}))_{t \geq 0}$ admits a non-trivial limit in distribution. The proof partly relies on combinations of reflected and absorbed Brownian motions which may be interesting in their own right.

Abstract:The model of a tired random walker, whose jump-length decays exponentially in time, is proposed and the motion of such a tired random walker is studied systematically in one, two and three dimensional contin- uum. In all cases, the diffusive nature of walker, breaks down due to tiring which is quite obvious. In one dimension, the distribution of the displace- ment of a tired walker remains Gaussian (as observed in normal walker) with reduced width. In two and three dimensions, the probability distribution of displacement becomes nonmonotonic and unimodal. The most probable displacement and the deviation reduces as the tiring factor increases. The probability of return of a tired walker, decreases as the tiring factor increases in one and two dimensions. However, in three dimensions, it is found that the probability of return almost insensitive to the tiring factor. The prob- ability distributions of first return time of a tired random walker do not show the scale invariance as observed for a normal walker in continuum. The exponents, of such power law distributions of first return time, in all three dimensions are estimated for normal walker. The exit probability and the probability distribution of first passage time are found in all three dimensions. A few results are compared with available analytical calculations for normal walker.

Abstract:We introduce a persistent random walk model with finite velocity and self-reinforcing directionality, which explains how exponentially distributed runs self-organize into truncated Lévy walks observed in active intracellular transport by Chen et. al. [\textit{Nat. mat.}, 2015]. We derive the non-homogeneous in space and time, hyperbolic PDE for the probability density function (PDF) of particle position. This PDF exhibits a bimodal density (aggregation phenomena) in the superdiffusive regime, which is not observed in classical linear hyperbolic and Lévy walk models. We find the exact solutions for the first and second moments and criteria for the transition to superdiffusion.

Abstract:We explore rectification phenomena in a system where two-dimensional random walkers interact with a funnel-shaped ratchet under two distinct classes of reflection rules. The two classes include the angle of reflection exceeding the angle of incidence ($\theta_{reflect} > \theta_{incident}$), or vice versa ($\theta_{reflect} < \theta_{incident}$). These generalized boundary reflection rules are indicative of non-equilibrium conditions due to the introduction of energy flows at the boundary. Our findings reveal that the nature of such particle-wall interactions dictates the system's behavior: the funnel either acts as a pump, directing flow, or as a collector, demonstrating a ratchet reversal. Importantly, we provide a geometric proof elucidating the underlying mechanism of rectification, thereby offering insights into why certain interactions lead to directed motion, while others do not.
