Abstract:We compute analytically the probability $S(t)$ that a set of $N$ Brownian paths do not cross each other and stay below a moving boundary $g(\tau)= W \sqrt{\tau}$ up to time $t$. We show that for large $t$ it decays as a power law $S(t) \sim t^{- \beta(N,W)}$. The decay exponent $\beta(N,W)$ is obtained as the ground state energy of a quantum system of $N$ non-interacting fermions in a harmonic well in the presence of an infinite hard wall at position $W$. Explicit expressions for $\beta(N,W)$ are obtained in various limits of $N$ and $W$, in particular for large $N$ and large $W$. We obtain the joint distribution of the positions of the walkers in the presence of the moving barrier $g(\tau) =W \sqrt{\tau}$ at large time. We extend our results to the case of $N$ Dyson Brownian motions (corresponding to the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) in the presence of the same moving boundary $g(\tau)=W\sqrt{\tau}$. For $W=0$ we show that the system provides a realization of a Laguerre biorthogonal ensemble in random matrix theory. We obtain explicitly the average density near the barrier, as well as in the bulk far away from the barrier. Finally we apply our results to $N$ non-crossing Brownian bridges on the interval $[0,T]$ under a time-dependent barrier $g_B(\tau)= W \sqrt{\tau(1- \frac{\tau}{T})}$.

Extremal statistics for a one-dimensional Brownian motion with a reflective boundary

Abstract:We investigate the extreme value statistics of a one-dimensional Brownian motion (with the diffusion constant $D$) during a time interval $\left[0, t \right]$ in the presence of a reflective boundary at the origin, starting from a positive position $x_0$. By deriving the survival probability of the Brownian particle without hitting an absorbing boundary at $x=M$, we obtain the distribution $P(M|x_0,t)$ of the maximum displacement $M$ and its expectation $\langle M \rangle$. In the short-time limit, i.e., $t \ll t_d$ where $t_d=x_0^2/D$ is the diffusion time from the starting position $x_0$ to the reflective boundary at the origin, the particle behaves like a free Brownian motion without any boundaries. In the long-time limit, $t \gg t_d$, $\langle M \rangle$ grows with $t$ as $\langle M \rangle \sim \sqrt{t}$, which is similar to the free Brownian motion, but the prefactor is $\pi/2$ times of the free Brownian motion, embodying the effect of the reflective boundary. By solving the propagator and using a path decomposition technique, we obtain the joint distribution $P(M,t_m|x_0,t)$ of $M$ and the time $t_m$ at which this maximum is achieved, from which the marginal distribution $P(t_m|x_0,t)$ is also obtained. For $t \ll t_d$, $P(t_m|x_0,t)$ looks like a U-shaped attributed to the arcsine law of free Brownian motion. For $t$ equal to or larger than order of magnitude of $t_m$, $P(t_m|x_0,t)$ deviates from the U-shaped distribution and becomes asymmetric with respect to $t/2$. Moreover, we compute the expectation $\langle t_m \rangle$ of $t_m$, and find that $\langle t_m \rangle/t$ is an increasing function of $t$. In two limiting cases, $\langle t_m \rangle/t \to 1/2$ for $t \ll t_d$ and $\langle t_m \rangle/t \to (1+2G)/4 \approx 0.708$ for $t \gg t_d$, where $G\approx0.916$ is the Catalan's constant. All the theoretical results are validated by numerical simulations.

Abstract:In the context of order statistics of discrete time random walks (RW), we investigate the statistics of the gap, Gn, and the number of time steps, Ln, between the two highest positions of a Markovian one-dimensional random walker, starting from x0 = 0, after n time steps (taking the x-axis vertical). The jumps ηi = xi −xi − 1 are independent and identically distributed random variables drawn from a symmetric probability distribution function (PDF), f(η), the Fourier transform of which has the small k behavior , with 0 < μ ⩽ 2. For μ = 2, the variance of the jump distribution is finite and the RW (properly scaled) converges to a Brownian motion. For 0 < μ < 2, the RW is a Lévy flight of index μ. We show that the joint PDF of Gn and Ln converges to a well defined stationary bi-variate distribution p(g, l) as the RW duration n goes to infinity. We present a thorough analytical study of the limiting joint distribution p(g, l), as well as of its associated marginals pgap(g) and ptime(l), revealing a rich variety of behaviors depending on the tail of f(η) (from slow decreasing algebraic tail to fast decreasing super-exponential tail). We also address the problem for a random bridge where the RW starts and ends at the origin after n time steps. We show that in the large n limit, the PDF of Gn and Ln converges to the same stationary distribution p(g, l) as in the case of the free-end RW. Finally, we present a numerical check of our analytical predictions. Some of these results were announced in a recent letter (Majumdar et al 2013 Phys. Rev. Lett. 111 070601)

Abstract:We study the extreme statistics of N non-intersecting Brownian motions (vicious walkers) over a unit time interval in one dimension. Using path-integral techniques we compute exactly the joint distribution of the maximum M and of the time \tau_M at which this maximum is reached. We focus in particular on non-intersecting Brownian bridges ("watermelons without wall") and non-intersecting Brownian excursions ("watermelons with a wall"). We discuss in detail the relationships between such vicious walkers models in watermelons configurations and stochastic growth models in curved geometry on the one hand and the directed polymer in a disordered medium (DPRM) with one free end-point on the other hand. We also check our results using numerical simulations of Dyson's Brownian motion and confront them with numerical simulations of the Polynuclear Growth Model (PNG) and of a model of DPRM on a discrete lattice. Some of the results presented here were announced in a recent letter [J. Rambeau and G. Schehr, Europhys. Lett. 91, 60006 (2010)].

Abstract:We study the asymptotic tail probability of the first-passage time over a moving boundary for a random walk conditioned to return to zero, where the increments of the random walk have finite variance. Typically, the asymptotic tail behavior may be described through a regularly varying function with exponent -1/2, where the impact of the boundary is captured by the slowly varying function. Yet, the moving boundary may have a stronger effect when the tail is considered at a time close to the return point of the random walk bridge. In the latter case, a phase transition appears in the asymptotics, of which the precise nature depends on the order of distance between zero and the moving boundary.

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional sluggish random walk with space-dependent transition probabilities between nearest-neighbour lattice sites. Motivated by trap models of slow dynamics, we consider a model in which the trap depth increases logarithmically with distance from the origin. This leads to a random walk which has symmetric transition probabilities that decrease with distance $|k|$ from the origin as $1/|k|$ for large $|k|$. We show that the typical position after time $t$ scales as $t^{1/3}$ with a nontrivial scaling function for the position distribution which has a trough (a cusp singularity) at the origin. Therefore an effective central bias away from the origin emerges even though the transition probabilities are symmetric. We also compute the survival probability of the walker in the presence of a sink at the origin and show that it decays as $t^{-1/3}$ at late times. Furthermore we compute the distribution of the maximum position, $M(t)$, to the right of the origin up to time $t$, and show that it has a nontrivial scaling function. Finally we provide a generalisation of this model where the transition probabilities decay as $1/|k|^\alpha$ with $\alpha >0$.

Dating a random walk: Statistics of the duration time of a random walk given its present position

Abstract:We consider the distribution of the duration time, the time elapsed since it began, of a diffusion process given its present position, under the assumption that the process began at the origin. For unbiased diffusion, the distribution does not exist (it is identically zero) for one and two dimensional systems. We find the explicit expression for the distribution for three and higher dimensions and discuss the behavior of the duration time statistics: we find that the expected duration time exists only for dimensions five and higher, whereas the variance becomes finite for seven dimensions and above. We then turn to the case of biased diffusion. The drift velocity introduces a new time scale and the resulting statistics arise from the interplay of the diffusive time scale and the drift time scale. For these systems all the moments exist and explicit expressions are presented and discussed for the expected duration time and its variance for all dimensions.

Random walkers in one-dimensional random environments: exact renormalization group analysis

Abstract:Sinai's model of diffusion in one dimension with random local bias is studied by a real space renormalization group, which yields exact results at long times. The effects of an additional small uniform bias force are also studied. We obtain analytically the scaling form of the distribution of the position x(t) of a particle, the probability of it not returning to the origin, and the distributions of first passage times, in an infinite sample as well as in the presence of a boundary and in a finite but large sample. We compute the distribution of the meeting time of two particles in the same environment. We also obtain a detailed analytic description of the thermally averaged trajectories by computing quantities such as the joint distribution of the number of returns and of the number of jumps forward. These quantities obey multifractal scaling, characterized by generalized persistence exponents theta(g) which we compute. In the presence of a small bias, the number of returns to the origin becomes finite, characterized by a universal scaling function which we obtain. The full statistics of the distribution of successive times of return of thermally averaged trajectories is obtained, as well as detailed analytical information about correlations between directions and times of successive jumps. The two-time distribution of the positions of a particle, x(t) and x(t') with t>t', is also computed exactly. It is found to exhibit "aging" with several time regimes characterized by different behaviors. In the unbiased case, for t-t' approximately t'alpha with alpha>1, it exhibits a ln t/ln t' scaling, with a singularity at coinciding rescaled positions x(t)=x(t'). This singularity is a novel feature, and corresponds to particles that remain in a renormalized valley. For closer times alpha<1, the two-time diffusion front exhibits a quasiequilibrium regime with a ln(t-t')/ln t' behavior which we compute. The crossover to a t/t' aging form in the presence of a small bias is also obtained analytically. Rare events corresponding to intermittent splitting of the thermal packet between separated wells which dominate some averaged observables are also characterized in detail. Connections with the Green function of a one-dimensional Schrödinger problem and quantum spin chains are discussed.
Superdiffusive planar random walks with polynomial space-time drifts

Abstract:We quantify superdiffusive transience for a two-dimensional random walk in which the vertical coordinate is a martingale and the horizontal coordinate has a positive drift that is a polynomial function of the individual coordinates and of the present time. We describe how the model was motivated through an heuristic connection to a self-interacting, planar random walk which interacts with its own centre of mass via an excluded-volume mechanism, and is conjectured to be superdiffusive with a scale exponent $3/4$. The self-interacting process originated in discussions with Francis Comets.

Abstract:We study a simple one dimensional sluggish random walk model with subdiffusive growth. In the continuum hydrodynamic limit, the model corresponds to a particle diffusing on a line with a space dependent diffusion constant D(x)= |x|^{-\alpha} and a drift potential U(x)=|x|^{-\alpha}, where \alpha\geq 0 parametrizes the model. For \alpha=0 it reduces to the standard diffusion, while for \alpha>0 it leads to a slow subdiffusive dynamics with the distance scaling as x\sim t^{\mu} at late times with \mu= 1/(\alpha+2)\leq 1/2. In this paper, we compute exactly, for all \alpha\ge 0, the full probability distributions of three observables for a sluggish walker of duration T starting at the origin: (i) the occupation time t_+ denoting the time spent on the positive side of the origin, (ii) the last passage time t_{\rm l} through the origin before T, and (iii) the time t_M at which the walker is maximally displaced on the positive side of the origin. We show that while for \alpha=0 all three distributions are identical and exhibit the celebrated arcsine laws of Lévy, they become different from each other for any \alpha>0 and have nontrivial shapes dependent on \alpha. This generalizes the Lévy's three arcsine laws for normal diffusion (\alpha=0) to the subdiffusive sluggish walker model with a general \alpha\geq 0. Numerical simulations are in excellent agreement with our analytical predictions.

Abstract:This article investigates the behavior of the continuous-time simple random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \geq 3$. We derive an asymptotic lower bound on the principal exponential rate of decay for the probability that the average value over a large box of some non-decreasing local function of the field of occupation times of the walk exceeds a given positive value. This bound matches at leading order the corresponding upper bound derived by Sznitman in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1906.05809" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1906.05809">arXiv:1906.05809</a>, and is given in terms of a certain constrained minimum of the Dirichlet energy of functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$ decaying at infinity. Our proof utilizes a version of tilted random walks, a model originally constructed by Li in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1412.3959" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1412.3959">arXiv:1412.3959</a> to derive lower bounds on the probability of the event that the trace of a simple random walk disconnects a macroscopic set from an enclosing box.

Diffusive persistence and the `sign-time' distribution

Abstract:We present a new method for extracting the persistence exponent theta for the diffusion equation, based on the distribution P of `sign-times'. With the aid of a numerically verified Ansatz for P we derive an exact formula for theta in arbitrary spatial dimension d. Our results are in excellent agreement with previous numerical studies. Furthermore, our results indicate a qualitative change in P above d ~ 36, signalling the existence of a sharp change in the ergodic properties of the diffusion field.

On Random Walks with A General Moving Barrier

Abstract:Random walks with a general, nonlinear barrier have found recent applications ranging from reionization topology to refinements in the excursion set theory of halos. Here we derive the first-crossing distribution of random walks with a moving barrier of arbitrary shape. Such a distribution is shown to satisfy an integral equation that can be solved by a simple matrix inversion, without the need for Monte Carlo simulations, making this useful for exploring a large parameter space. We discuss examples in which common analytic approximations fail, a failure that can be remedied using the method described here.

Abstract:We analyze the stochastic solutions to the Wigner equation, which explain the nonlocal oscillatory integral operator Theta(V) with an antisymmetric kernel as the generator of two branches of jump processes. All existing branching random walk solutions are formulated based on the Hahn-Jordan decomposition Theta(V) = Theta(+)(V) - Theta(-)(V), i.e., treating Theta(V) as the difference of two positive operators Theta(+/-)(V), each of which characterizes the transition of states for one branch of particles. Despite v the fact that the first moments of such models solve the Wigner equation, we prove that the bounds of corresponding variances grow exponentially in time, with the rate depending on the upper bound of Theta(+/-)(V) instead of Theta(V). In other words, the decay of high-frequency components is totally ignored, resulting in a severe numerical sign problem. To fully utilize such a decay property, we turn to the stationary phase approximation for Theta(V), which captures essential contributions from the stationary phase points as well as from the near-cancellation of positive and negative weights. The resulting branching random walk solutions are then proved to asymptotically solve the Wigner equation, but they gain a substantial reduction in variances, thereby ameliorating the sign problem. Numerical experiments in 4-D phase space validate our theoretical findings.
Survival probability of a run-and-tumble particle in the presence of a drift

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional run-and-tumble particle, or persistent random walk, in the presence of an absorbing boundary located at the origin. After each tumbling event, which occurs at a constant rate $\gamma$, the (new) velocity of the particle is drawn randomly from a distribution $W(v)$. We study the survival probability $S(x,t)$ of a particle starting from $x \geq 0$ up to time $t$ and obtain an explicit expression for its double Laplace transform (with respect to both $x$ and $t$) for an arbitrary velocity distribution $W(v)$, not necessarily symmetric. This result is obtained as a consequence of Spitzer's formula, which is well known in the theory of random walks and can be viewed as a generalization of the Sparre Andersen theorem. We then apply this general result to the specific case of a two-state particle with velocity $\pm v_0$, the so-called persistent random walk (PRW), and in the presence of a constant drift $\mu$ and obtain an explicit expression for $S(x,t)$, for which we present more detailed results. Depending on the drift $\mu$, we find a rich variety of behaviours for $S(x,t)$, leading to three distinct cases: (i) subcritical drift $-v_0\!<\!\mu\!<\! v_0$, (ii) supercritical drift $\mu < -v_0$ and (iii) critical drift $\mu=-v_0$. In these three cases, we obtain exact analytical expressions for the survival probability $S(x,t)$ and establish connections with existing formulae in the mathematics literature. Finally, we discuss some applications of these results to record statistics and to the statistics of last-passage times.

Abstract:We have considered the persistence of unvisited sites of a lattice, i.e., the probability $S(t)$ that a site remains unvisited till time $t$ in presence of mutually repulsive random walkers. The dynamics of this system has direct correspondence to that of the domain walls in a certain system of Ising spins where the number of domain walls become fixed following a zero termperature quench. Here we get the result that $S(t) \propto \exp(-\alpha t^{\beta})$ where $\beta$ is close to 0.5 and $\alpha$ a function of the density of the walkers $\rho$. The number of persistent sites in presence of independent walkers of density $\rho^\prime$ is known to be $S^\prime (t) = \exp(-2 \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi}} \rho^\prime t^{1/2})$. We show that a mapping of the interacting walkers' problem to the independent walkers' problem is possible with $\rho^\prime = \rho/(1-\rho)$ provided $\rho^\prime, \rho$ are small. We also discuss some other intricate results obtained in the interacting walkers' case.

Abstract:The model of a tired random walker, whose jump-length decays exponentially in time, is proposed and the motion of such a tired random walker is studied systematically in one, two and three dimensional contin- uum. In all cases, the diffusive nature of walker, breaks down due to tiring which is quite obvious. In one dimension, the distribution of the displace- ment of a tired walker remains Gaussian (as observed in normal walker) with reduced width. In two and three dimensions, the probability distribution of displacement becomes nonmonotonic and unimodal. The most probable displacement and the deviation reduces as the tiring factor increases. The probability of return of a tired walker, decreases as the tiring factor increases in one and two dimensions. However, in three dimensions, it is found that the probability of return almost insensitive to the tiring factor. The prob- ability distributions of first return time of a tired random walker do not show the scale invariance as observed for a normal walker in continuum. The exponents, of such power law distributions of first return time, in all three dimensions are estimated for normal walker. The exit probability and the probability distribution of first passage time are found in all three dimensions. A few results are compared with available analytical calculations for normal walker.

Abstract:We present analytical results for the joint probability distribution $P(T_{FR}=t,S=s)$ of first return (FR) times t and of the number of distinct sites s visited by a random walk (RW) on a one dimensional lattice before returning to the origin. The RW on a one dimensional lattice is recurrent, namely the probability to return to the origin is $P_{R}=1$. However the mean $\langle T_{FR}\rangle$ of the distribution $P(T_{FR}=t)$ of first return times diverges. Similarly, the mean $\langle S\rangle$ of the distribution $P(S=s)$ of the number of distinct sites visited before returning to the origin also diverges. The joint distribution $P(T_{FR}=t,S=s)$ provides a formulation that controls these divergences and accounts for the interplay between the kinetic and geometric properties of first return trajectories. We calculate the conditional distributions $P(T_{FR}=t|S=s)$ and $P(S=s|T_{FR}=t)$. We find that the conditional expectation value of first return times of trajectories that visit s distinct sites is ${\mathbb E}[T_{FR}|S=s]=\frac{2}{3}(s^2+s+1)$, and the variance is $Var(T_{FR}|S=s)=\frac{4}{45}(s-1)(s+2)(s^2+s-1)$. We also find that in the asymptotic limit, the conditional expectation value of the number of distinct sites visited by an RW that first returns to the origin at time $t=2n$ is ${\mathbb E}[S|T_{FR}=2n] \simeq \sqrt{\pi n}$, and the variance is $Var(S|T_{FR}=2n) \simeq \pi\left(\frac{\pi}{3}-1\right)n$. These results go beyond the important recent results of Klinger et al. [{\it Phys. Rev. E} {\bf 105}, 034116 (2022)], who derived a closed form expression for the generating function of the joint distribution, but did not go further to extract an explicit expression for the joint distribution itself. The joint distribution provides useful insight on the efficiency of random search processes, in which the aim is to cover as many sites as possible in a given number of steps.

Number of distinct and common sites visited by $N$ independent random walkers

Abstract:In this Chapter, we consider a model of $N$ independent random walkers, each of duration $t$, and each starting from the origin, on a lattice in $d$ dimensions. We focus on two observables, namely $D_N(t)$ and $C_N(t)$ denoting respectively the number of distinct and common sites visited by the walkers. For large $t$, where the lattice random walkers converge to independent Brownian motions, we compute exactly the mean $\langle D_N(t) \rangle$ and $\langle C_N(t) \rangle$. Our main interest is on the $N$-dependence of these quantities. While for $\langle D_N(t) \rangle$ the $N$-dependence only appears in the prefactor of the power-law growth with time, a more interesting behavior emerges for $\langle C_N(t) \rangle$. For this latter case, we show that there is a ``phase transition'' in the $(N, d)$ plane where the two critical line $d=2$ and $d=d_c(N) = 2N/(N-1)$ separate three phases of the growth of $\langle C_N(t)\rangle$. The results are extended to the mean number of sites visited exactly by $K$ of the $N$ walkers. Furthermore in $d=1$, the full distribution of $D_N(t)$ and $C_N(t)$ are computed, exploiting a mapping to the extreme value statistics. Extensions to two other models, namely $N$ independent Brownian bridges and $N$ independent resetting Brownian motions/bridges are also discussed.
