Abstract:Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and Stream Interaction Regions (SIRs) are the main drivers of intense geomagnetic storms. We study the distribution of geomagnetic storms associated with different drivers during solar cycles 23 and 24 (1996-2019). Although the annual occurrence rate of geomagnetic storms in both cycles tracks the sunspot cycle, the second peak in storm activity lags the second sunspot peak. SIRs contribute significantly to the second peak in storm numbers in both cycles, particularly for moderate to stronger-than-moderate storms. We note semiannual peaks in storm numbers much closer to equinoxes for moderate storms, and slightly shifted from equinoxes for intense and stronger-than-intense storms. We note a significant fraction of multiple-peak storms in both cycles due to isolated ICMEs/SIRs, while single-peak storms from multiple interacting drivers, suggesting a complex relationship between storm steps and their drivers. Our study focuses on investigating the recovery phases of geomagnetic storms and examining their dependencies on various storm parameters. Multiple-peak storms in both cycles have recovery phase duration strongly influenced by slow and fast decay phases with no correlation with the main phase buildup rate and Dst peak. However, the recovery phase in single-peak storms for both cycles depends to some extent on the main phase buildup rate and Dst peak, in addition to slow and fast decay phases. Future research should explore recovery phases of single and multiple-peak storms incorporating in-situ solar wind observations for a deeper understanding of storm evolution and decay processes.

Abstract:Intense geomagnetic storms are characterized by a minimum value of the Dst index at or below -100 nT. It is well known that these storms are caused by the southward magnetic fields in coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and corotating interaction regions (CIRs). While CIR storms are confined to Dst values at or above -150 nT, CME storms can reach Dst -500 nT or lower. In this report, we illustrate the need to understand the storm evolution based on solar source and solar wind parameters using a recent storm (2023 April 24) by way of providing the motivation to catalog such events for a better understanding of the main phase time structure of geomagnetic storms

Abstract:It is widely accepted that eruptive phenomena on the Sun are related to the solar magnetic field, which is closely tied to the observed magnetic concentrations (MCs). Therefore, studying MCs is critical in order to understand the origin and evolution of all forms of solar activity. In this paper, we investigate the statistics of characteristic physical parameters of MCs during a whole solar cycle by analyzing magnetograms from 2010 to 2021 observed by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We discover that there are differences between large- and small-scale MCs in diffenent phases of the solar cycle. By analyzing the distributions of the magnetic flux, area, and magnetic energy of MCs, we find that the small-scale MCs obey a power-law distribution, and that the power indices vary very little with the phases of the solar cycle. However, for the large-scale MCs, although they also obey the power-law distribution, the power indices are clearly modulated by the different phases of the solar cycle. We also investigate the relation between the maximum magnetic field strength (Bmax) and the area of MCs (S) and find the same property. The relation for the large-scale MCs is modulated by the phases of the solar cycle, while it is still independent of the phases of the solar cycle for the small-scale MCs. Our results suggest that small- and large-scale MCs could be generated by different physical mechanisms.
Impact of Solar and Interplanetary Disturbances on Space Weather

Abstract:Solar activity is the dynamic energy source behind all solar phenomena driving space weather. During an active solar period, violent eruptions occur more often on the Sun. The solar flares (SFs) and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) shoot energetic and highly charged particles towards Earth that ensuing ionospheric and geomagnetic disturbances. The some geomagnetic disturbances illuminate night skies with brilliant sheets of red and green known as auroras or northern and southern lights. All these phenomena are most frequent near the maximum of each 11-year cycle of solar activity. The Maunder minimum (1645-1715) refers to a period when very few sunspots were observed. During this period, the Earth climate was cooler than normal. This period mimics the solar cycle climate change connections. The particles and electromagnetic radiations flowing from solar activity outbursts are important for long-term climate variations. The geomagnetosphere and upper atmosphere can be greatly perturbed by variations in the solar wind caused by disturbances on the Sun. In recent years, these in situ data have resulted in explosive growth in our knowledge and understanding of solar-interplanetaryterrestrial process. The magnetic reconnection provides opportunity to enter solar plasma within geomagnetosphere. Two kinds of flows dominate the large scale structure of solar wind: corotating flows and transient disturbances. Corotating flows are associated with spatial variability in coronal expansion and solar rotation, whereas transient disturbances are associated with episodic ejections of material into interplanetary space from coronal regions. There are two types of geomagnetic field variations termed as long-time variation and storm-time variations. The long-term variations are very useful to solar cyclical study of geomagnetic field variation as well as change in polarity of the Sun, climate change, plants growth rate and geological change of Earth’s pole. Extreme Solar Eruptions and their Space Weather Consequences

Abstract:Solar eruptions generally refer to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and flares. Both are important sources of space weather. Solar flares cause sudden change in the ionization level in the ionosphere. CMEs cause solar energetic particle (SEP) events and geomagnetic storms. A flare with unusually high intensity and/or a CME with extremely high energy can be thought of examples of extreme events on the Sun. These events can also lead to extreme SEP events and/or geomagnetic storms. Ultimately, the energy that powers CMEs and flares are stored in magnetic regions on the Sun, known as active regions. Active regions with extraordinary size and magnetic field have the potential to produce extreme events. Based on current data sets, we estimate the sizes of one-in-hundred and one-in-thousand year events as an indicator of the extremeness of the events. We consider both the extremeness in the source of eruptions and in the consequences. We then compare the estimated 100-year and 1000-year sizes with the sizes of historical extreme events measured or inferred.

Abstract:Abstract The solar cycle is a complex phenomenon, a comprehensive understanding of which requires the study of various tracers. Here, we consider the solar cycle as manifested in the harmonics of the solar large-scale surface magnetic field, including zonal, sectorial and tesseral harmonics, divided into odd and even relative to the solar equator. In addition to considering the amplitudes of the harmonics, we analyze their contribution to the magnetic energy. It turns out that the relative contribution of different types of harmonics to the magnetic energy is virtually independent of the cycle height. We identify different phases of the activity cycle using harmonics of different symmetries. A possible way to incorporate the obtained result into the solar dynamo theory is proposed.

Abstract:We present a detailed study on a solar storm occurred on 2014 January 7. By using the remote-sensing observations of solar activities at multiple wavelengths from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), the eruptions of the solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) are investigated. Based on the measurement of energetic protons from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and the in-situ plasma measurement from the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) at the solar-terrestrial L1 point, the solar energetic particle (SEP) event and interplanetary CME (ICME) accompanied by the solar storm, and the shock driven by the ICME are analyzed. The influence of the solar storm on the geomagnetic fields is also analyzed with the ground-based magnetic data. The results in this study show that: (1) The initial time of impulsive phase of the solar flare and the ejection time of the CME are temporally in accordance with each other. (2) The solar protons are mainly accelerated by the CME-driven shock, rather than by the magnetic reconnection in the flare, and the protons are released when the CME travels to 7.7 solar radius. (3) The widths of the interplanetary shock sheath and the ICME itself are derived to be 0.22 AU and 0.26 AU, respectively. (4) The interplanetary shock and the ICME give rise to substorms and aurora, whereas no obvious geomagnetic storm is detected. The reason is that the ICME does not contain a regular structure of magnetic cloud (MC) or evident southward component of magnetic field.
Magnetic storms during the space age: Occurrence and relation to varying solar activity

Abstract:We study the occurrence of magnetic storms in space age (1957-2021) using Dst and Dxt indices. We find 2526/2743 magnetic storms in the Dxt/Dst index, out of which 45% are weak, 40% moderate, 12% intense and 3% major storms. Occurrence of storms in space age follows the slow decrease of sunspot activity and the related change in solar magnetic structure. We quantify the sunspot - CME storm relation in the five cycles of space age. We explain how the varying solar activity changes the structure of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS), and how this affects the HSS/CIR storms. Space age started with a record number of storms in 1957-1960, with roughly one storm per week. Solar polar fields attained their maximum in cycle 22, which led to an exceptionally thin HCS, and a space age record of large HSS/CIR storms in 1990s. In the minimum of cycle 23, for the only time in space age, CME storm occurrence reduced below that predicted by sunspots. Weak sunspot activity since cycle 23 has weakened solar polar fields and widened the HCS, which has decreased the occurrence of large and moderate HSS/CIR storms. Because of a wide HCS, the Earth has spent 50% of its time in slow solar wind since cycle 23. The wide HCS has also made large and moderate HSS/CIR storms occur in the early declining phase in recent cycles, while in the more active cycles 20-22 they occurred in the late declining phase.

Properties of the recovery phase of extreme storms

Abstract:A geomagnetic storm is a phenomenon of weakening of Earth's magnetic field from a few hours to several days, which directly or indirectly affects navigation, transportation, communication, power grids, satellite electronics, etc. In general, the duration of the recovery phase is larger. Thus, its cumulative effect is greater than the main phase. Therefore, it is important to understand the physical processes involved during the recovery phase. In this paper, we have studied the recovery phase of 31 extreme geomagnetic storms that occurred from 1990 to 2020. Each storm demonstrates two distinct features of the recovery phase i.e. initial fast and later slow recovery phase. During the fast recovery phase, the rate of recovery either linearly or non-linearly depends on , which has been characterised by an exponential or hyperbolic decay function in various reported studies. In our study, we have noted that the hyperbolic function explains the complete recovery phase of only 11 extreme events. Furthermore, both decay functions fail to explain the late recovery phase of storms. Interestingly, we have found that the rate of recovery during the slow phase shows steady variation (independent to ), i.e., . Dynamics and solar wind control of the recovery of strong geomagnetic storms

Abstract:In this work, we studied the characteristics and dynamical changes during the recovery time of moderate and strong geomagnetic storms (Dst $<-50$ nT). Investigating 57 storms triggered by CMEs/CIRs, we focused on the solar wind's influence on their decay phases. Selected storms were classified into distinct groups based on their recovery characteristics. Using superposed epoch analysis and best fit methods, we scrutinized several interplanetary solar wind plasma and field parameters/functions. The analysis included single, dual, and multiple interplanetary plasma and field parameters/functions. We determined the most representative characteristic time for the storm's recovery profile by fitting an exponential curve. A correlation analysis between Dst and solar wind parameters/functions isolated a coupling function ($\rho^{1/2}$Ey) best describing the decay rate of the ring current. This shows that the electric field term (Ey) coupled with a viscous term ($\rho^{1/2}$) plays a pivotal role in determining the recovery rate of geomagnetic storms. Additionally, we modeled the complex patterns of Dst recovery in relation to solar wind parameters/functions using a second-order polynomial. During the recovery phase, a dynamic correlation between Dst and solar wind parameters/functions was revealed. The three-parameter solar wind-magnetosphere electrodynamical coupling function, combining the viscous term ($\rho^{1/2}$) and the electric field-related function (v$^{4/3}$B) ($\rho^{1/2}$v$^{4/3}$B), significantly impacts the recovery phase of geomagnetic disturbances. Our investigation extended to the relationship between main and recovery phase durations, providing valuable insights into the solar wind's control over the decay of geomagnetic disturbances. These findings advance our comprehension of the complex relationship between solar wind dynamics and the evolution of geomagnetic disturbances.

Abstract:Abstract We study solar wind anomalies and their associations with solar wind structures using the STEREO solar wind and suprathermal electron (STE) data from IMPACT and PLASTIC. We define solar wind anomalies as temporary and local excursions from the average solar wind state, regardless of their origins, for six anomalies: sunward strahls, counterstreaming suprathermal electrons, suprathermal electron depletions, nearly radial magnetic field episodes, anomalously low proton temperatures, and anomalously low proton beta. We first establish the solar wind synoptic contour displays, which show the expected variations in solar wind structure during the solar cycle: recurrent corotating heliospheric magnetic field (HMF) and stream structures are dominant during solar quiet times around the solar minimum (2008 December) preceding cycle 24, while complex structures characterize solar active times around the solar maximum (2014 April). During the declining phase of the cycle (2016–2019), the stream structures remain complex, but the HMF sectors show the structures of the solar minimum. We then systematically study the six anomalies by analyzing the STE data using automated procedures. All anomalies present some degree of dependence on the large-scale solar wind structure, especially around the solar minimum, implying that the solar wind structure plays a role in either the generation or transportation of these anomalies. One common feature of all of the anomalies is that the distributions of the durations of the anomalous episodes all peak at the 1 hr data resolution, but monotonically decrease over longer durations, which may arguably imply that solar anomalies occur on a continuum of temporal and spatial scales.

A solar cycle clock for extreme space weather

Abstract:The variable solar cycle of activity is a long-standing problem in physics. It modulates the overall level of space weather activity at earth, which in turn can have significant societal impact. The Hilbert transform of the sunspot number is used to map the variable length, approximately 11 year Schwabe cycle onto a uniform clock. The clock is used to correlate extreme space weather seen in the aa index, the longest continuous geomagnetic record at earth, with the record of solar active region areas and latitudes since 1874. This shows that a clear switch-off of the most extreme space weather events occurs when % of solar active region areas have moved to within about 15° of the solar equator, from regions of high gradient in solar differential rotation which can power coronal mass ejections, to a region where solar differential rotation is almost constant with latitude. More moderate space weather events which coincide with 27 day solar rotation recurrences in the aa index, consistent with stable, persistent source regions of high speed streams, commence when the centroid of solar active region areas moves to within 15° of the solar equator. This offers a physical explanation for the longstanding identification of a two component cycle of activity in the aa index.

A statistical study of the likelihood of a super geomagnetic storm occurring in a mild solar cycle

Abstract:The activities of geomagnetic storms are generally controlled by solar activities. The current solar cycle (SC) 24 is found to be mild; compared to SCs 19-23, the storm occurrence and size derived by averaging the occurrence number and D-st around the solar maximum are reduced by about 50-82% and 36-61%, respectively. We estimate separately, for SC 19 to 24, the repeat intervals between geomagnetic storms of specific D-st, based on fits of power-law and log-normal distributions to the storm data for each SC. Repeat intervals between super geomagnetic storms with D-st <==-250 nT are found to be 0.36-2.95 year(s) for SCs 19-23, but about 20 years based on the data for SC 24. We also estimate the repeat intervals between coronal mass ejections (CMEs) of specific speed (V-CME) since CMEs are known to be the main drivers of intense storms and the related statistics may provide information about the potential occurrence of super geomagnetic storms from the location of the Sun. Our analysis finds that a CME with V-CME >= 1860 km/s may occur once per 3 and 5 months in SC 23 and 24, respectively. Based on a V-CME-D-st relationship, such a fast CME may cause a storm with D-st=-250 nT if arriving at the Earth. By comparing the observed geomagnetic storms to storms expected to be caused by CMEs, we derive the probability of CME caused storms, which is dependent on V-CME. For a CME faster than 1860 km/s, the probability of a CME caused storm with D-st <=-250 nT is about 1/5 for SC 23 or 1/25 for SC 24. All of the above results suggest that the likelihood of the occurrence of super geomagnetic storms is significantly reduced in a mild SC.
Statistical Characteristics of Substorms with Different Intensity

Abstract:Geomagnetic substorm is one of the essential solar wind‐magnetosphere energy coupling processes. In this study, we present a statistical analysis of substorms with different intensities that occurred from 1982 to 2012. We investigated the substorm occurrence rate, the time evolution of solar wind and geomagnetic parameters, as well as the SME, SMU and, SML indices during these substorms by using OMNI and SuperMag networks data sets. We find that substorms more frequently occur during solar declining phases and in spring and autumn due to the Russel‐McPherron effect. The superposed SME index shows a double‐peak near midnight and dusk during intense substorms, standing for comparable eastward and westward electrojets. We suggest that there is an additional current wedge during intense substorms located near the dusk. During the substorm expansion phase, eastward and westward electrojets are expanding against their current direction. The results presented in this study provide a comprehensive view of substorm characteristics with different intensities and may facilitate the understanding of the development of auroral electrojets in the ionosphere, even the current system in the magnetosphere.
Classification of Enhanced Geoeffectiveness Resulting from High-Speed Solar Wind Streams Compressing Slower Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections

Abstract:High-speed solar wind streams (HSSs) interact with the preceding ambient solar wind to form Stream Interaction Regions (SIRs), which are a primary source of recurrent geomagnetic storms. However, HSSs may also encounter and subsequently interact with Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs). In particular, the impact of the interaction between slower ICMEs and faster HSSs, represents an unexplored area that requires further in-depth investigation. This specific interaction can give rise to unexpected geomagnetic storm signatures, diverging from the conventional expectations of individual SIR events sharing similar HSS properties. Our study presents a comprehensive analysis of solar wind data spanning from 1996 to 2020, capturing 23 instances where such encounters led to geomagnetic storms ($SymH$ $< -30$ nT). We determined that interaction events between preceding slower ICMEs and faster HSSs possess the potential to induce substantial storm activity, statistically nearly doubling the geoeffective impact in comparison to SIR storm events. The increase in the amplitude of the $SymH$ index appears to result from heightened dynamic pressure, often coupled with the concurrent amplification of the CMEs rearward $|B|$ and/or $B_z$ components.

Abstract:The solar wind-magnetosphere energy transfer is one major way of quantifying the impacts of space weather on the Earth's environment. Studies on solar wind-magnetosphere energy transfer in terms of sub-daily time scales are quite sparse. Consequently, in order to investigate storm-time characteristics of the solar wind-magnetosphere energy transfer at a 4-hourly time scale over solar cycle 23, a total of 85 major geomagnetic storms (Dst ≤ -100 nT) were categorized into bins, using the points of minimum Dst values as reference points. Additionally, the monthly statistics of the storms occurrences over the solar cycle was carried out. The statistics followed a semi-annual periodicity, with a lesser peak in the months of May and August, and a major peak in October and November. Furthermore, the energy dissipated was estimated by the summation of aurora precipitation, Joule heating, and the ring current injection. Overall, from the data analyzed, we observed storm-time intensification of energy transfer. The magnetosphere received the highest energy during the time interval 0400–0800 UT (0900–1300 LT in the American sector, and most impactful there), while the lowest energy transfer was recorded between 0000–0400 UT (0200–0600 LT in the African/European sector, and least impactful there). We observed a synchrony between the energy dissipated and energy input for the storms' main phases. Generally, storms driven by a composite of two Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) transients transferred highest energy into the magnetosphere, while those driven by Co-rotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) transferred lowest energy.

Abstract:NOAA active region (AR) 13664/8 produced the most intense geomagnetic effects since the Halloween event of 2003. The resulting extreme solar storm is thought to be the consequence of multiple interacting coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Notably, this AR exhibits exceptionally rapid magnetic flux emergence. The eruptions on which we focus all occurred along collisional polarity inversion lines (PILs) through collisional shearing during a three-day period of extraordinarily high flux emergence (∼10 21 Mx h −1). Our key findings reveal how photospheric magnetic configurations in eruption sources influence solar superstorm formation and geomagnetic responses, and link exceptionally strong flux emergence to sequential homologous eruptions: (1) We identified the source regions of seven halo CMEs that were distributed primarily along two distinct PILs. This distribution suggests two groups of homologous CMEs. (2) The variations in the magnetic flux emergence rates in the source regions are correlated with the CME intensities. This might explain the two contrasting cases of complex ejecta that are observed at Earth. (3) Our calculations of the magnetic field gradients around the CME source regions show strong correlations with eruptions. This provides crucial insights into solar eruption mechanisms and enhances our prediction capabilities for future events.

Characteristics and development of the main phase disturbance in geomagnetic storms (Dst $\le$ -50 nT)

Abstract:We present geomagnetic storms (GSs) selected from three solar cycles, spanning the years 1995 to 2022. We studied the development of the main phase of storms within disturbance storm time (Dst) amplitudes ranging from Dst =-64 nT to Dst=- 422 nT. In order to determine the solar wind (SW) parameters that mainly influence the main phase development of a GS, which can best describe the SW-magnetosphere coupling, we divided our selected GSs into four groups based on main phase duration. Superposed epoch analysis was performed on the selected geomagnetic indices, SW plasma and field parameters, and their derivatives separately for each group. To that end, the dynamics of GS main phase development is mainly guided by interplanetary driver magnetic field southward component, (-Bz). It has been determined that there is a temporal difference between the peak values of Bz and Dst. As a result, Dst is delayed from Bz by 1-4 hours, which is crucial for space weather forecasting. The peak of Dst has a direct relationship with the amplitude of storm sudden commencement (SSC) and an inverse relationship with the duration of SSC. The inter-relationship between the peaks of the three indices (Dst, AE, and ap) during GS, is also obtained. Dst is found to be more closely related to ap than AE. To determine the best fit SW parameter to the geomagnetic activity indices, we used a linear correlation between the peak values of individual geomagnetic indices and SW plasma and field parameters and their derivatives. An electric field related function involving speed and IMF (v$^{4/3}$Bz) when coupled with a viscous term ($\rho^{1/2}$) correlates very well with the intensity of the GS (Dst$ _{min} $ or $ \Delta$Dst) and the magnitude of (ap$_{max}$) and (AE$_{max}$) during storms. However, a related function (v$^{4/3}$B$\rho^{1/2}$) represents slightly better the peak of AE$_{max}$ during the storms.
