Abstract:The solar wind-magnetosphere energy transfer is one major way of quantifying the impacts of space weather on the Earth's environment. Studies on solar wind-magnetosphere energy transfer in terms of sub-daily time scales are quite sparse. Consequently, in order to investigate storm-time characteristics of the solar wind-magnetosphere energy transfer at a 4-hourly time scale over solar cycle 23, a total of 85 major geomagnetic storms (Dst ≤ -100 nT) were categorized into bins, using the points of minimum Dst values as reference points. Additionally, the monthly statistics of the storms occurrences over the solar cycle was carried out. The statistics followed a semi-annual periodicity, with a lesser peak in the months of May and August, and a major peak in October and November. Furthermore, the energy dissipated was estimated by the summation of aurora precipitation, Joule heating, and the ring current injection. Overall, from the data analyzed, we observed storm-time intensification of energy transfer. The magnetosphere received the highest energy during the time interval 0400–0800 UT (0900–1300 LT in the American sector, and most impactful there), while the lowest energy transfer was recorded between 0000–0400 UT (0200–0600 LT in the African/European sector, and least impactful there). We observed a synchrony between the energy dissipated and energy input for the storms' main phases. Generally, storms driven by a composite of two Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) transients transferred highest energy into the magnetosphere, while those driven by Co-rotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) transferred lowest energy.

Abstract:Based on the data of the solar wind (SW) measurements of the OMNI database for the period 1976–2019, we investigate the behavior of SW types, as well as plasma and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) parameters, for 21–24 solar cycles (SCs). Our analysis shows that with the beginning of the period of low solar activity (SC 23), the number of all types of disturbed events in the interplanetary medium decreased, but the proportion of magnetic storms initiated by CIR increased. In addition, a change in the nature of SW interaction with the magnetosphere could occur due to a decrease in the density, temperature, and IMF of solar wind.

Abstract:We study the variation in plasma beta, Alfven Mach number, and magnetosonic Mach number during different geomagnetic storms of solar cycles 23, 24, and 25. In addition, we employ measurements of the solar wind's flow pressure, proton density, interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) along the z-direction (Bz), temperature, velocity, and geomagnetic index SYM-H. Here, the wavelet coherence (WTC) approach of plasma beta, the Alfven Mach number, and the magnetosonic Mach number have been used with the symmetrical H component (SYM-H) index, which are critical indicators of the plasma behavior and magnetic field interactions. A solar CME or, much less severely, a corotating interaction region (CIR), which is formed at the leading edge of a high-speed stream, is the source of the magnetic storm. The key objective of this study is to reveal the possible dependencies of the geomagnetic indices on whether a storm is driven by a CME or CIR. For CIR-associated storms, large amplitude waves occur preferentially with the rising Alfven Mach number and plasma beta. At the same time, the magnetosonic Mach number lacks variability during the storms caused by shock on the arrival of Earth's environment. This is different for CME-driven storms, where the variations of the magnetosonic Mach number do not show much fluctuation compared to the Alfven Mach number and plasma beta. WTC between SYM-H and our derived parameters indicates periodicities between 64 and 512 minutes and noticeable regions of significantly enhanced power on November 07-09, 2004, and June 21-23, 2015. However, the magnetosonic Mach number showed a noticeable coherence with SYM-H between 64 and 250 minutes on September 06-08, 2017. Although, during March 19-21, 2021, both the Alfven Mach number and magnetosonic Mach number showed a noticeable coherence with SYM-H, plasma beta showed none. These parameters can be used in the prediction of geomagnetic storms of the category above G3.
Distribution and Recovery Phase of Geomagnetic Storms During Solar Cycles 23 and 24

Abstract:Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and Stream Interaction Regions (SIRs) are the main drivers of intense geomagnetic storms. We study the distribution of geomagnetic storms associated with different drivers during solar cycles 23 and 24 (1996-2019). Although the annual occurrence rate of geomagnetic storms in both cycles tracks the sunspot cycle, the second peak in storm activity lags the second sunspot peak. SIRs contribute significantly to the second peak in storm numbers in both cycles, particularly for moderate to stronger-than-moderate storms. We note semiannual peaks in storm numbers much closer to equinoxes for moderate storms, and slightly shifted from equinoxes for intense and stronger-than-intense storms. We note a significant fraction of multiple-peak storms in both cycles due to isolated ICMEs/SIRs, while single-peak storms from multiple interacting drivers, suggesting a complex relationship between storm steps and their drivers. Our study focuses on investigating the recovery phases of geomagnetic storms and examining their dependencies on various storm parameters. Multiple-peak storms in both cycles have recovery phase duration strongly influenced by slow and fast decay phases with no correlation with the main phase buildup rate and Dst peak. However, the recovery phase in single-peak storms for both cycles depends to some extent on the main phase buildup rate and Dst peak, in addition to slow and fast decay phases. Future research should explore recovery phases of single and multiple-peak storms incorporating in-situ solar wind observations for a deeper understanding of storm evolution and decay processes.

Impact of Solar and Interplanetary Disturbances on Space Weather

Abstract:Solar activity is the dynamic energy source behind all solar phenomena driving space weather. During an active solar period, violent eruptions occur more often on the Sun. The solar flares (SFs) and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) shoot energetic and highly charged particles towards Earth that ensuing ionospheric and geomagnetic disturbances. The some geomagnetic disturbances illuminate night skies with brilliant sheets of red and green known as auroras or northern and southern lights. All these phenomena are most frequent near the maximum of each 11-year cycle of solar activity. The Maunder minimum (1645-1715) refers to a period when very few sunspots were observed. During this period, the Earth climate was cooler than normal. This period mimics the solar cycle climate change connections. The particles and electromagnetic radiations flowing from solar activity outbursts are important for long-term climate variations. The geomagnetosphere and upper atmosphere can be greatly perturbed by variations in the solar wind caused by disturbances on the Sun. In recent years, these in situ data have resulted in explosive growth in our knowledge and understanding of solar-interplanetaryterrestrial process. The magnetic reconnection provides opportunity to enter solar plasma within geomagnetosphere. Two kinds of flows dominate the large scale structure of solar wind: corotating flows and transient disturbances. Corotating flows are associated with spatial variability in coronal expansion and solar rotation, whereas transient disturbances are associated with episodic ejections of material into interplanetary space from coronal regions. There are two types of geomagnetic field variations termed as long-time variation and storm-time variations. The long-term variations are very useful to solar cyclical study of geomagnetic field variation as well as change in polarity of the Sun, climate change, plants growth rate and geological change of Earth’s pole. Abstract:We develop a preliminary interplanetary disturbance index (J s W ) by applying the spectral whitening method to an energy coupling function with solar wind measurements during the years 1998–2014 as the input, which can be used as an indicator of perturbations in the near-Earth solar wind. The correlation and temporal variation between J s W and the geomagnetic disturbance index (J p G ) constructed from the same method have been analyzed in detail for 167 geomagnetic storms with the minimum D st index less than or equal to −50 nT. The time delay between J s W and J p G is clearly observable and varies for different events, according to which J s W is shifted backward with respect to J p G . We obtain a fairly good negative correlation between the shifted J s W and the J p G indices for the majority of events, and the significance level for 88% of the events (i.e., 147 events) does not exceed 0.05. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between solar wind parameters, such as solar wind speed (V), interplanetary magnetic field IMF (B, Bz) and geomagnetic activity index (Dst, Ap). We identified 103 intense geomagnetic storms (GMS) associated with decrease in Dst (disturbance storm time) ≤ -100nT during 1997- 2006 and 2011-2018, the period spanning over solar cycle 23 and 24. A comparative study has been done using the superposed epoch analysis, often used to demonstrate an effect or a periodicity (Chree analysis). The strength of the geomagnetic storm (Dst) shows significant dependency on the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) B. The average correlations during solar cycles 23 and 24 are -0.60 and -0.62 respectively, which is quite reasonable. Considering previous studies, Dst is strongly dependent on the southward magnetic field component (Bz), whereas in our present study the average correlation coefficient has been found to be weak and the time lag between Bz minimum and Dst minimum has found up to 5 hours. These results indicate that significant growth in Bz occurs before the main phase of the GMS and not during the main phase. Dst shows high correlation with solar wind speed V during solar cycle 23 (-0.71) than 24 (-0.58) whereas the Ap index exhibits low average correlation with V for solar cycle 23 (+0.51) and SC 24 (+0.31). The correlation coefficient between Dst and Ap index for solar cycle 23 (−0.62) is lower than that for solar cycle 24 (-0.72). Dst shows higher anti-correlation with BV then with B alone but shows low correlation with BzV.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Similar to the Sun, other stars shed mass and magnetic flux via ubiquitous quasi-steady wind and episodic stellar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We investigate the mass loss rate via solar wind and CMEs as a function of solar magnetic variability represented in terms of sunspot number and solar X-ray background luminosity. We estimate the contribution of CMEs to the total solar wind mass flux in the ecliptic and beyond, and its variation over different phases of the solar activity cycles. The study exploits the number of sunspots observed, coronagraphic observations of CMEs near the Sun by SOHO/LASCO, in situ observations of the solar wind at 1 AU by WIND, and GOES X-ray flux during solar cycles 23 and 24. We note that the X-ray background luminosity, occurrence rate of CMEs and ICMEs, solar wind mass flux, and associated mass loss rates from the Sun do not decrease as strongly as the sunspot number from the maximum of solar cycle 23 to the next maximum. Our study confirms a true physical increase in CME activity relative to the sunspot number in cycle 24. We show that the CME occurrence rate and associated mass loss rate can be better predicted by X-ray background luminosity than the sunspot number. The solar wind mass loss rate which is an order of magnitude more than the CME mass loss rate shows no obvious dependency on cyclic variation in sunspot number and solar X-ray background luminosity. These results have implications for the study of solar-type stars.

Abstract:Transient and recurrent solar activity drive geomagnetic disturbances; these are quantified (amongst others) by DST, AE indices time-series. Transient disturbances are related to the Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) while recurrent disturbances are related to corotating interaction regions (CIR). We study the relationship of the geomagnetic disturbances to the solar wind drivers within solar Cycle 23 where the drivers are represented by ICMEs and CIRs occurrence rate and compared to the DST and AE as follows: terms with common periodicity in both the geomagnetic disturbances and the solar drivers are, firstly, detected using continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Then, common power and phase coherence of these periodic terms are calculated from the cross-wavelet spectra (XWT) and waveletcoherence (WTC) respectively. In time-scales of about 27 days our results indicate an anti-correlation of the effects of ICMEs and CIRs on the geomagnetic disturbances. The former modulates the DST and AE time series during the cycle maximum the latter during periods of reduced solar activity. The phase relationship of these modulation is highly non-linear. Only the annual frequency component of the ICMEs is phase-locked with DST and AE. In time-scales of about 1.3-1.7 years the CIR seem to be the dominant driver for both geomagnetic indices throughout the whole solar cycle 23.

Abstract:Intense geomagnetic storms are characterized by a minimum value of the Dst index at or below -100 nT. It is well known that these storms are caused by the southward magnetic fields in coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and corotating interaction regions (CIRs). While CIR storms are confined to Dst values at or above -150 nT, CME storms can reach Dst -500 nT or lower. Abstract:The loss of electron flux of the outer radiation belt has been widely studied in terms of the mechanism that brings in these losses. There are a few studies which have attempted to explain the interplanetary conditions that favor the depletions. As the Sun is the prime cause of any change happening in the magnetosphere, it is important to look at the solar drivers that bring in such changes. In this study, we attempt to understand the effect of solar structures and substructures on the loss of radiation belt high-energy electrons during intense geomagnetic storms. The superposed epoch analysis is used to observe any peculiar changes in GOES electron flux data during the storms that are associated with solar structures such as CME and CIR, ICME substructures such as the magnetic cloud, magnetic cloud with sheath, ejecta, ejecta with sheath, and only sheath. The long-term data also give an opportunity to compare the flux decrease during solar cycles 23 and 24. It has been observed that 1) CIR-associated storms cause a comparatively higher flux decrease than CME-associated storms, 2) sheath-related storms bring out a higher flux decrease, and 3) there is no significant change in flux for the storms of both the solar cycles. The flux decrease in intense storms at the geostationary orbit is essentially triggered by the “Dst effect.” Apart from this, the minimum IMF Bz and northward IMF Bz before turning southward add to the flux decrease. These results hold true for the electron depletions occurring only during intense geomagnetic storms and may alter otherwise.

Abstract:This review article summarizes the advancement in the studies of Earth-affecting solar transients in the last decade that encompasses most of solar cycle 24. The Sun Earth is an integrated physical system in which the space environment of the Earth sustains continuous influence from mass, magnetic field and radiation energy output of the Sun in varying time scales from minutes to millennium. This article addresses short time scale events, from minutes to days that directly cause transient disturbances in the Earth space environment and generate intense adverse effects on advanced technological systems of human society. Such transient events largely fall into the following four types: (1) solar flares, (2) coronal mass ejections (CMEs) including their interplanetary counterparts ICMEs, (3) solar energetic particle (SEP) events, and (4) stream interaction regions (SIRs) including corotating interaction regions (CIRs). In the last decade, the unprecedented multi viewpoint observations of the Sun from space, enabled by STEREO Ahead/Behind spacecraft in combination with a suite of observatories along the Sun-Earth lines, have provided much more accurate and global measurements of the size, speed, propagation direction and morphology of CMEs in both 3-D and over a large volume in the heliosphere. Several advanced MHD models have been developed to simulate realistic CME events from the initiation on the Sun until their arrival at 1 AU. Much progress has been made on detailed kinematic and dynamic behaviors of CMEs, including non-radial motion, rotation and deformation of CMEs, CME-CME interaction, and stealth CMEs and problematic ICMEs. The knowledge about SEPs has also been significantly improved.

Dynamics and solar wind control of the recovery of strong geomagnetic storms

Abstract:In this work, we studied the characteristics and dynamical changes during the recovery time of moderate and strong geomagnetic storms (Dst $<-50$ nT). Investigating 57 storms triggered by CMEs/CIRs, we focused on the solar wind's influence on their decay phases. Selected storms were classified into distinct groups based on their recovery characteristics. Using superposed epoch analysis and best fit methods, we scrutinized several interplanetary solar wind plasma and field parameters/functions. The analysis included single, dual, and multiple interplanetary plasma and field parameters/functions. We determined the most representative characteristic time for the storm's recovery profile by fitting an exponential curve. A correlation analysis between Dst and solar wind parameters/functions isolated a coupling function ($\rho^{1/2}$Ey) best describing the decay rate of the ring current. This shows that the electric field term (Ey) coupled with a viscous term ($\rho^{1/2}$) plays a pivotal role in determining the recovery rate of geomagnetic storms. Additionally, we modeled the complex patterns of Dst recovery in relation to solar wind parameters/functions using a second-order polynomial. During the recovery phase, a dynamic correlation between Dst and solar wind parameters/functions was revealed. The three-parameter solar wind-magnetosphere electrodynamical coupling function, combining the viscous term ($\rho^{1/2}$) and the electric field-related function (v$^{4/3}$B) ($\rho^{1/2}$v$^{4/3}$B), significantly impacts the recovery phase of geomagnetic disturbances. Our investigation extended to the relationship between main and recovery phase durations, providing valuable insights into the solar wind's control over the decay of geomagnetic disturbances. These findings advance our comprehension of the complex relationship between solar wind dynamics and the evolution of geomagnetic disturbances.

Abstract:The Sun is an active star and its magnetic field fluctuates from a fraction of a second to a long period of time. The solar wind, CME, solar prominence, solar flares, solar particle and solar filament are the direct result of solar magnetic activity effects on the interplanetary space, Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere. The intensity of irruption of these phenomena from the Sun's surface depends upon its phases. The extreme events affect technology both in space and on the ground.The data obtained from series of observations can help to predict solar activities and safekeeping to the space technology. In this study the cross correlations between IMF Bz, solar wind velocity(Vsw) and interplanetary electric field(Ey) with AE and SYM-H are studied. The results reveal that strong geomagnetic disturbances have high impact on the components of space weather than weak disturbances have.

Abstract:Statistical relations between the geomagnetic Dst index, cosmic ray variations, and solar wind characteristics are compared for Forbush decreases associated with: (i) coronal mass ejections from active regions (AR-CMEs) accompanied by solar flares, (ii) filament eruptions outside active regions, (iii) corotating interaction regions (CIRs) caused by high-speed streams from coronal holes, (iv) mixed events induced by two or more solar sources. Relationships of geomagnetic indices and parameters of cosmic rays and the solar wind are also compared between sporadic events with or without magnetic clouds (MCs) and between Solar Cycles (SCs) 23 and 24. The results reveal that interplanetary disturbances originated by AR-CMEs associated with an MC are most geoeffective and cause powerful geomagnetic storms, while CIRs create only moderate and weak storms. Sporadic and recurrent events differ in values of the Dst index and southward component of the magnetic field, as well as in the relationship between them. For sporadic events, geomagnetic activity is more affected by the presence or absence of an MC than by the type of solar source. Interplanetary disturbances associated with AR-CMEs are more effective in SC 23 while those associated with other types of solar sources have approximately the same geoeffectiveness in both SCs.

The Delayed Time Response of Geomagnetic Activity to the Solar Wind

Abstract:We investigate the lagged correlation between a selection of geomagnetic indices and solar wind parameters for a complete solar cycle, from 2000 to 2011. We first discuss the mathematical assumptions required for such a correlation analysis. The solar wind parameters and geomagnetic indices have inherent timescales that smooth the variations of the correlation coefficients with time lag. Furthermore, the solar wind structure associated with corotating interaction regions and coronal mass ejections, and the compression regions ahead of them, strongly impacts the lagged correlation analysis results. This work shows that such bias must be taken into account in a correct interpretation of correlations. We then evidence that the magnetospheric response time to solar wind parameters involves multiple timescales. The simultaneous and quick response of the PC and AE indices to solar wind dynamic pressure with a delay of ~5 min suggests that magnetospheric compression by solar wind can trigger substorm activity. We find that the PC and AE indices respond to interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) BZ with a response time of respectively ~20 and ~35 min. The response of the SYM‐H index takes longer (~80 min) and is less sharp, SYM‐H being statistically significantly correlated to the IMF BZ observed up to more than ~10 h before. Our results suggest that the solar wind velocity's dominant impact on geomagnetic activity is caused by the compression regions at the interface of fast/slow solar wind regimes, which are very geo‐effective as they are associated with high solar wind pressure and strong interplanetary magnetic field.

Classification of Enhanced Geoeffectiveness Resulting from High-Speed Solar Wind Streams Compressing Slower Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections

Abstract:High-speed solar wind streams (HSSs) interact with the preceding ambient solar wind to form Stream Interaction Regions (SIRs), which are a primary source of recurrent geomagnetic storms. However, HSSs may also encounter and subsequently interact with Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs). In particular, the impact of the interaction between slower ICMEs and faster HSSs, represents an unexplored area that requires further in-depth investigation. This specific interaction can give rise to unexpected geomagnetic storm signatures, diverging from the conventional expectations of individual SIR events sharing similar HSS properties. Our study presents a comprehensive analysis of solar wind data spanning from 1996 to 2020, capturing 23 instances where such encounters led to geomagnetic storms ($SymH$ $< -30$ nT). We determined that interaction events between preceding slower ICMEs and faster HSSs possess the potential to induce substantial storm activity, statistically nearly doubling the geoeffective impact in comparison to SIR storm events. The increase in the amplitude of the $SymH$ index appears to result from heightened dynamic pressure, often coupled with the concurrent amplification of the CMEs rearward $|B|$ and/or $B_z$ components.
