Abstract:We investigate the quantum discord dynamics in a cavity quantum electrodynamics system, which consists of two noninteracting two-level atoms driven by independent optical fields and classical fields, and find that the quantum discord vanishes only asymptotically although entanglement disappears suddenly during the time evolution in the absence of classical fields. It is shown that the amount of quantum discord can be increased by adjusting the classical driving fields because the increasing degree of the amount of quantum mutual information is greater than classical correlation by applying the classical driving fields. Finally, the influence of the classical driving field on the fidelity of the system is also examined.

Abstract:The discrete states resulting from three-dimensional confinement in semiconductor quantum dots retain much of the character of their bulk-band origins, for example their angular momentum and effective mass. In addition they have many features of discrete atomic-like single particle states. Strong optical field interactions and reasonable dephasing rates make this system attractive for basic quantum optics experiments, as well as applications in quantum information sciences. However, semiconductor quantum dots have large inhomogeneous state broadens due to variations in size and shape. In addition, epitaxial semiconductor quantum dots, one of the classes in common use, rarely have ideal symmetry. Here we show how an optical technique can be used to fine-tune the transition energies of semiconductor quantum dots states and if desired restore targeted symmetry elements. This approach can be applied to establish degeneracies in biexciton-exciton decays to form discrete entangled photon pairs or to establish indistinguishability between different quantum dots.
Coherence limitations in the optical control of the singlet-triplet qubit in a quantum dot molecule

Abstract:We analyze the optically driven dynamics of a qubit implemented on a singlet-triplet subspace of two-electron states in a self-assembled quantum dot molecule. We study two possible control schemes based on the coupling to an excited (four-particle) state either by two spectrally separated laser pulses or by a single spectrally broad pulse. We quantitatively characterize the imperfections of the qubit operation resulting from nonadiabatic evolution and from limited spectral selectivity in a real system, as compared to the ideal adiabatic Raman transfer of occupation in the Λ system. Next, we study the effects of decoherence induced by the coupling to the phonons of the surrounding crystal lattice and by radiative recombination. As a result, we are able to identify the optimization trade-offs between different sources of errors and indicate the most favorable conditions for quantum control of the singlet-triplet qubit in the two optical control schemes. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.106.125308 ©2022 American Physical Society

Suppression of exciton dephasing in quantum dots through ultrafast multipulse control

Abstract:We investigate the usefulness and viability of the scheme developed by Viola and Lloyd [Phys. Rev. A 58, 2733 (1998)] to control dephasing in the context of exciton-based quantum computation with self-assembled quantum dots. We demonstrate that optical coherence of a confined exciton qubit exposed to phonon-induced dephasing can be substantially enhanced through the application of a simple periodic sequence of control pulses. The shape of the quantum dot has a significant effect on the dephasing properties. Remarkably, we find that quantum dots with parameters optimized for implementing quantum computation are among the most susceptible to dephasing, yet periodic decoupling is most efficient for exactly that type of dot. We also show that the presence of an electric field, which is a necessary ingredient for many exciton-based quantum computing schemes, may further increase the control efficiency. Our results suggest that dynamical decoupling may be a method of choice for robust storage of exciton qubits during idle stages of quantum algorithms.

Abstract:We use the Magnus expansion method to study the problem of coherent population transfer from the ground state to the indirect exciton state in a three-level asymmetric double quantum-dot system driven by a single laser pulse. By the first-order Magnus expansion of the time-evolution unitary operator of the quantum system , we analytically obtain the pulse-area conditions for achieving complete population transfer of the asymmetric double quantum-dot system without rotation wave approximation. Then, we solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation of the system for numerical verification of the pulse-area conditions. Furthermore, we compare the performance of the Gaussian pulse, the multi-period cosine pulse, and the single-period cosine pulse in population transfer. The results show that all three pulses can achieve complete population transfers as long as the pulse-area conditions are satisfied, which reveals the physical significance of optical field amplitude in population transfer. The robustness analysis of the three pulse schemes indicates that the single-period cosine pulse is superior to the other two in the resistance against unstable laser pulse parameters and the decoherence effect. This work offers a vital reference for precise optical field control over the quantum state of asymmetric quantum-dot systems, which is of significant value in quantum optics and quantum information science fields.

Abstract:We use the spin-polarized excitons in a single quantum dot to design optical controls for basic operations in quantum computing. We examine the ultrafast nonlinear optical processes required and use the coherent nonlinear optical responses to deduce if such processes are physically reasonable. The importance and construction of an entangled state of polarized exciton states in a single quantum dot is explained. We put our proposal in perspective with respect to a number of theoretical suggestions of utilizing the semiconductor quantum dots.

Abstract:Coherent single electron spin oscillation in a double quantum dot system driven by a magnetic electron spin resonance field is studied theoretically using a Bloch-type rate equation approach. The oscillation frequency and relaxation time obtained using typical model parameters are consistent with experiment findings. The dominant decoherence mechanism is identified to be a leakage current through a Coulomb blockade barrier at a quantum dot during the spin manipulation. Nuclear field fluctuations which induce a long relaxation time are found to contribute only negligibly to the decoherence despite an earlier suggestion.
Coherent Control of an Optical Quantum Dot Using Phonons and Photons

Abstract:Genuine quantum-mechanical effects are readily observable in modern optomechanical systems comprising bosonic ("classical") optical resonators. Here we describe unique features and advantages of optical two-level systems, or qubits, for optomechanics. The qubit state can be coherently controlled using both phonons and resonant or detuned photons. We experimentally demonstrate this using charge-controlled InAs quantum dots (QDs) in surface-acoustic-wave resonators. Time-correlated single-photon counting measurements reveal the control of QD population dynamics using engineered optical pulses and mechanical motion. As a first example, at moderate acoustic drive strengths, we demonstrate the potential of this technique to maximize fidelity in quantum microwave-to-optical transduction. Specifically, we tailor the scheme so that mechanically assisted photon scattering is enhanced over the direct detuned photon scattering from the QD. Spectral analysis reveals distinct scattering channels related to Rayleigh scattering and luminescence in our pulsed excitation measurements which lead to time-dependent scattering spectra. Quantum-mechanical calculations show good agreement with our experimental results, together providing a comprehensive description of excitation, scattering and emission in a coupled QD-phonon optomechanical system.

Limits for coherent optical control of quantum emitters in layered materials

Abstract:The coherent control of a two-level system is among the most essential challenges in modern quantum optics. Understanding its fundamental limitations is crucial, also for the realization of next generation quantum devices. The quantum coherence of a two level system is fragile in particular, when the two levels are connected via an optical transition. When such quantum emitters are located in solids the coherence suffers from the interaction of the optical transition with the solid state environment, which requires the sample to be cooled to temperatures of a few Kelvin or below. Here, we use a mechanically isolated quantum emitter in hexagonal boron nitride to explore the individual mechanisms which affect the coherence of an optical transition under resonant drive. We operate the system at the threshold where the mechanical isolation collapses in order to study the onset and temperature-dependence of dephasing and independently of spectral diffusion. The new insights on the underlying physical decoherence mechanisms reveals a limit in temperature until which coherent driving of the system is possible. This study enables to increase the operation temperature of quantum devices, therefore reducing the need for cryogenic cooling.

High fidelity all-optical control of quantum dot spins: detailed study of the adiabatic approach

Abstract:Confined electron spins are preferred candidates for embodying quantum information in the solid state. A popular idea is the use of optical excitation to achieve the ``best of both worlds'', i.e. marrying the long spin decoherence times with rapid gating. Here we study an all-optical adiabatic approach to generating single qubit phase gates. We find that such a gate can be extremely robust against the combined effect of all principal sources of decoherence, with an achievable fidelity of 0.999 even at finite temperature. Crucially this performance can be obtained with only a small time cost: the adiabatic gate duration is within about an order of magnitude of a simple dynamic implementation. An experimental verification of these predictions is immediately feasible with only modest resources.

Hybrid acousto-optical swing-up state control in a quantum dot

Abstract:State transfer between different quantum systems is key for successful quantum technologies. Over long distances, photons are irreplaceable, but on short ranges in miniaturized complex devices or hybrid systems, coupling via orders of magnitude shorter wavelength acoustic waves has great potential. With interfaces to light, acoustic waves, and more, optically active quantum dots (QDs) are essential for multi-component systems. Here, we propose a hybrid acousto-optical method of non-resonant QD charge state control as an extension of the recent all-optical swing-up state preparation. We show that exciton and biexciton states or other superpositions of charge states can be prepared. Each field can act as a trigger, so an optically gated acoustic control and the opposite scheme, where an optical pulse controls the transition during acoustic modulation, can be implemented. Thus, we introduce acoustic state control into a system that lacks direct acoustic coupling between the states. The method does not rely on pulse shaping and is expected to work with arbitrary pulse shapes. Evaluating the phonon impact, we find an almost decoherence-free exciton preparation even at elevated temperatures with current QD and acoustic technology. This approach may also pave the way for optically controlled entanglement between emitters and acoustic modes and further on-chip state transfer via quantum acoustic busses.

Abstract:An all-optical scheme to polarize nuclear spins in a single quantum dot is analyzed. The hyperfine interaction with randomly oriented nuclear spins presents a fundamental limit for electron spin coherence in a quantum dot; by cooling the nuclear spins, this decoherence mechanism could be suppressed. The proposed scheme is inspired by laser cooling methods of atomic physics and implements a "controlled Overhauser effect" in a zero-dimensional structure.

Abstract:A basic requirement for quantum information processing is the ability to universally control the state of a single qubit on timescales much shorter than the coherence time. Although ultrafast optical control of a single spin has been achieved in quantum dots, scaling up such methods remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate complete control of the quantum-dot charge qubit on the picosecond scale [corrected], orders of magnitude faster than the previously measured electrically controlled charge- or spin-based qubits. We observe tunable qubit dynamics in a charge-stability diagram, in a time domain, and in a pulse amplitude space of the driven pulse. The observations are well described by Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interference. These results establish the feasibility of a full set of all-electrical single-qubit operations. Although our experiment is carried out in a solid-state architecture, the technique is independent of the physical encoding of the quantum information and has the potential for wider applications.
Dynamical Quantum Interference and Its Controllability in Semiconductors Irradiated by an Intense Terahertz Laser

Abstract:The ionization of excitons by an intense terahertz (THz) laser, in nature, results from the dynamic quantum interference between the discrete state and the THz–photon sidebands of the continuum. As the acceleration of quasimomentum states hinders the simultaneous conservation of the momentum and energy, an intense THz field can block the momentum transfer in the ionization process, and thus suppress the ionization (dephasing) rate. Considering the fact that momentum transfer is essential in various scattering processes, an intense THz field is expected to control and even suppress other dephasing channels. This idea is demonstrated by a seminal example, i.e., the dephasing due to the conventional Fano resonance associated with the subband structures in low-dimensional semiconductors.

Abstract:The similarities between gated quantum dots and the transistors in modern microelectronics - in fabrication methods, physical structure, and voltage scales for manipulation - have led to great interest in the development of quantum bits (qubits) in semiconductor quantum dots. While quantum dot spin qubits have demonstrated long coherence times, their manipulation is often slower than desired for important future applications, such as factoring. Further, scalability and manufacturability are enhanced when qubits are as simple as possible. Previous work has increased the speed of spin qubit rotations by making use of integrated micromagnets, dynamic pumping of nuclear spins, or the addition of a third quantum dot. Here we demonstrate a new qubit that offers both simplicity - it requires no special preparation and lives in a double quantum dot with no added complexity - and is very fast: we demonstrate full control on the Bloch sphere with $\pi$-rotation times less than 100 ps in two orthogonal directions. We report full process tomography, extracting high fidelities equal to or greater than 85% for X-rotations and 94% for Z-rotations. We discuss a path forward to fidelities better than the threshold for quantum error correction.

Abstract:We calculate the dephasing rate of an electron state in a pinched quantum dot, due to Coulomb interactions between the electron in the dot and electrons in a nearby voltage-biased ballistic nanostructure. The dephasing is caused by nonequilibrium time fluctuations of the electron density in the nanostructure, which create random electric fields in the dot. As a result, the electron level in the dot fluctuates in time, and the coherent part of the resonant transmission through the dot is suppressed.

Abstract:Modern quantum technologies rely crucially on techniques to mitigate quantum decoherence; these techniques can be either passive, achieved for example via materials engineering, or active, typically achieved via pulsed monochromatic driving fields applied to the qubit. Using a solid-state defect spin coupled to a microwave-driven spin bath, we experimentally demonstrate a decoherence mitigation method based on spectral engineering of the environmental noise with a polychromatic drive waveform, and show that it outperforms monochromatic techniques. Results are in agreement with quantitative modeling, and open the path to active decoherence protection using custom-designed waveforms applied to the environment rather than the qubit.
