Abstract:The detrimental ecological impacts of engineered shoreline protection methods (e.g., seawalls) and the need to protect the coastal zone have prompted calls for greater use of natural and nature-based infrastructure (NNBI). To balance competing needs of structural stability and ecological functioning, managers require assessments of NNBI designs and materials for differing environmental settings (e.g., among wave-energy regimes). To examine the effects of setting and oyster-based NNBI design on the provision of shoreline protection, we constructed reefs from two substrates: a novel, biodegradable material (Oyster Catcher, OC) and traditional oyster shell bags (SB) on low- and high-energy eroding salt marsh shorelines, designated based on fetch and boat wake exposure. Both reef types buffered marsh elevation change on the high-energy shoreline relative to unaltered controls, but only SB reefs were able to do so on the low-energy shoreline. Additionally, both shorelines experienced high ambient rates of retreat and declines in marsh vegetation shoot density. Although constructed reefs did not mitigate marsh retreat on the low-energy shoreline, novel OC reefs significantly reduced retreat relative to SB reefs and control sites (no reefs) on the high-energy shoreline. Those SB reefs were severely damaged by storm events, increasing their areal footprints at the expense of vertical relief. Conversely, OC reefs on both shorelines exhibited steady oyster recruitment and growth and hosted higher densities of larger oysters. To successfully provide shoreline stabilization benefits, oyster-based NNBI must be structurally stable and able to promote sustained oyster recruitment and growth. Our results indicate that deliberate decisions regarding NNBI substrate, siting, and configuration can produce resilient reefs, which reduce rates of erosion and, in some cases, enhance vertical accretion along salt marsh edges. The growth trajectory, structural stability, and co-benefit provisioning of OC reefs demonstrate the potential of alternative restoration substrates to provide valuable oyster habitat along threatened marsh shorelines.

Abstract:Oysters have been recognized as ecological engineers for aquatic ecosystems, as oyster reefs provide critical habitats and foraging locations for other marine species. In the past few decades, anthropogenic activities have negatively impacted oyster reef ecosystems across the globe, resulting in a significant decline in their population. This review critically examines the causes and extent of oyster reef degradation, as well as the effectiveness of restoration initiatives employed to reverse this decline. Furthermore, this review evaluates the effectiveness of restoration strategies employed to rehabilitate oyster reefs. Different approaches, such as genetic improvement, suitable site selection, and oyster seeding to enhance oyster reef restorations, are critically reviewed in this paper. Furthermore, some advanced restoration approaches such as 3D printing, shell recycling, and acoustics technologies are also discussed in this paper, which opens the new doors for researchers in the field of restoration ecology. Challenges and barriers hindering successful restoration are also addressed, including financial constraints, regulatory complexities, and public engagement. The findings and insights presented herein contribute to the growing body of knowledge on oyster reef ecology and serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, scientists, and conservation practitioners seeking effective strategies for restoring these vital coastal ecosystems.

Abstract:Climate change is acidifying and warming our oceans, at an unprecedented rate posing a challenge for marine invertebrates vital across the globe for ecological services and food security. Here we show it is possible for resilience to climate change in an ecologically and economically significant oyster without detrimental effects to the energy budget. We exposed 24 pair-mated genetically distinct families of the Sydney rock oyster, Saccostrea glomerata to ocean acidification and warming for 4w and measured their resilience. Resilience was identified as the capacity to defend their acid-base balance without a loss of energy available for Scope for Growth (SFG). Of the 24 families, 13 were better able to defend their acid-base balance while eight had no loss of energy availability with a positive SFG. This study has found oyster families with reslience against climate change without a loss of SFG, is an essential mitigation strategy, in a critical mollusc.

Abstract:Abstract The ability of reefs to protect coastlines from storm-driven flooding hinges on their capacity to keep pace with sea-level rise. Here, we show how and whether coral restoration could achieve the often-cited goal of reversing the impacts of coral-reef degradation to preserve this essential function. We combined coral-growth measurements and carbonate-budget assessments of reef-accretion potential at Buck Island Reef, U.S. Virgin Islands, with hydrodynamic modeling to quantify future coastal flooding under various coral-restoration, sea-level rise, and storm scenarios. Our results provide guidance on how restoration of Acropora palmata , if successful, could mitigate the most extreme impacts of coastal flooding by reversing projected trajectories of reef erosion and allowing reefs to keep pace with the ~0.5 m of sea-level rise expected by 2100 with moderate carbon-emissions reductions. This highlights the potential long-term benefits of pursuing coral-reef restoration alongside climate-change mitigation to support the persistence of essential coral-reef ecosystem services.

Abstract:Restoration of foundation species promises to reverse environmental degradation and return lost ecosystem services, but a lack of standardized evaluation across projects limits understanding of recovery, especially in marine systems. Oyster reefs are restored to reverse massive global declines and reclaim valuable ecosystem services, but the success of these projects has not been systematically and comprehensively quantified. We synthesized data from 245 restored‐degraded reef pairs and 136 restored‐reference reef pairs across 3500 km of U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coastline. On average, restoration caused a 21‐fold increase in oyster production (mean log response ratio ± 95% CI: 3.08 ± 0.5), 34–97% enhancement of habitat provisioning (community abundance: 0.51 ± 0.1, richness: 0.29 ± 0.1, and biomass: 0.69 ± 0.3), 54% more nitrogen removal (0.43 ± 0.3), and 89–95% greater sediment nutrients (0.67 ± 0.4) and organic matter (0.64 ± 0.24) relative to degraded habitats. Moreover, restored reefs matched reference reefs for these ecosystem services. Our meta‐analysis supports the continued and expanded use of oyster restoration to enhance ecosystem services of degraded coastal systems and match many functions provided by reference reefs. Abstract:Over 85 % of oyster reefs have been lost globally due to disease, overharvesting, global warming, and pollution. Consideration of the ecosystem services provided by healthy oyster reefs (e.g., coastal protection, water purification and carbon burial) has driven recent research and restoration efforts worldwide. However, hydrodynamic studies, specifically looking at the effects of different levels of wave exposure on the ecomorphodynamics of oyster reefs, are scarce. In this study, we consider oyster reefs in microtidal estuaries under different levels of relative wave exposure to determine how hydrodynamics may shape reef morphology and how reef morphology affects wave dissipation. We quantify oyster reef morphology through spatial analysis, using morphometrics and spatial density and relate these to the ability of oyster reefs to dissipate wave energy. Field campaigns were undertaken at three microtidal sites in southeast Australia with different hydrodynamic exposure and morphology: Gamay (Botany Bay), Port Hacking and Crookhaven River. We found that reef morphology and orientation is related to estuarine hydrodynamic conditions and thus we propose an ecomorphodynamic model with a continuum of morphologies from sparse reefs aligned perpendicular to the tidal currents and incoming waves (patch reefs), through broken up barriers semi-aligned or obliquely to the tidal flows (string reefs), to the total barrier that exists under the lowest hydrodynamic conditions (fringing reefs). The highest dissipative ability of locally generated wind waves occurred at Crookhaven (patch reef, 165 kW/m 2 ), and lowest at Gamay (string reef, 11.66 kW/m 2 ). Our results suggest that reef morphology, and orientation to currents and waves, influence wave dissipation, and that hydrodynamic conditions in turn influence reef morphology. These findings are important to inform future reef restoration under increasingly severe climate change conditions to optimise ecosystem services on restored oyster reefs.

Abstract:Solutions are being sought to ameliorate the impacts of anthropogenic climate change. Seagrass may be a solution to provide refugia from climate change for marine organisms. This study aimed to determine if the seagrass Zostera muelleri sub spp. capricorni benefits the Sydney rock oyster Saccostrea glomerata, and if these benefits can modify any anticipated negative impacts of ocean acidification. Future and ambient ocean acidification conditions were simulated in 52 L mesocosms at control (381 μatm) and elevated (848 μatm) CO2 with and without Z. muelleri. Oyster growth, physiology and microbiomes of oysters and seagrass were measured. Seagrass was beneficial to oyster growth at ambient pCO2, but did not positively modify the impacts of ocean acidification on oysters at elevated pCO2. Oyster microbiomes were altered by the presence of seagrass but not by elevated pCO2. Our results indicate seagrasses may not be a panacea for the impacts of climate change.

Abstract:Oceanic absorption of atmospheric CO2 results in alterations of carbonate chemistry, a process coined ocean acidification (OA). The economically and ecologically important eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) is vulnerable to these changes because low pH hampers CaCO3 precipitation needed for shell formation. Organisms have a range of physiological mechanisms to cope with altered carbonate chemistry; however, these processes can be energetically expensive and necessitate energy reallocation. Here, the hypothesis that resilience to low pH is related to energy resources was tested. In laboratory experiments, oysters were reared or maintained at ambient (400 ppm) and elevated (1300 ppm) pCO2 levels during larval and adult stages, respectively, before the effect of acidification on metabolism was evaluated. Results showed that oysters exposed to elevated pCO2 had significantly greater respiration. Subsequent experiments evaluated if food abundance influences oyster response to elevated pCO2. Under high food and elevated pCO2 conditions, oysters had less mortality and grew larger, suggesting that food can offset adverse impacts of elevated pCO2, while low food exacerbates the negative effects. Results also demonstrated that OA induced an increase in oyster ability to select their food particles, likely representing an adaptive strategy to enhance energy gains. While oysters appeared to have mechanisms conferring resilience to elevated pCO2, these came at the cost of depleting energy stores, which can limit the available energy for other physiological processes. Taken together, these results show that resilience to OA is at least partially dependent on energy availability, and oysters can enhance their tolerance to adverse conditions under optimal feeding regimes.

Abstract:Foundation species, such as mangroves, saltmarshes, kelps, seagrasses, and oysters, thrive within suitable environmental envelopes as narrow ribbons along the land-sea margin. Therefore, these habitat-forming species and resident fauna are sensitive to modified environmental gradients. For oysters, many estuaries impacted by sea-level rise, channelization, and municipal infrastructure are experiencing saltwater intrusion and water-quality degradation that may alter reef distributions, functions, and services. To explore decadal-scale oyster-reef community patterns across a temperate estuary in response to environmental change, we resampled reefs in the Newport River Estuary (NRE) during 2013-2015 that had previously been studied during 1955-1956. We also coalesced historical NRE reef distribution (1880s-2015), salinity (1913-2015), and water-quality-driven shellfish closure boundary (1970s-2015) data to document environmental trends that could influence reef ecology and service delivery. Over the last 60-120 years, the entire NRE has shifted toward higher salinities. Consequently, oyster-reef communities have become less distinct across the estuary, manifest by 20%-27% lower species turnover and decreased faunal richness among NRE reefs in the 2010s relative to the 1950s. During the 2010s, NRE oyster-reef communities tended to cluster around a euhaline, intertidal-reef type more so than during the 1950s. This followed faunal expansions farther up estuary and biological degradation of subtidal reefs as NRE conditions became more marine and favorable for aggressive, reef-destroying taxa. In addition to these biological shifts, the area of suitable bottom on which subtidal reefs persist (contracting due to up-estuary intrusion of marine waters) and support human harvest (driven by water quality, eroding from up-estuary) has decreased by >75% since the natural history of NRE reefs was first explored. This "coastal squeeze" on harvestable subtidal oysters (reduced from a 4.5-km to a 0.75-km envelope along the NRE's main axis) will likely have consequences regarding the economic incentives for future oyster conservation, as well as the suite of services delivered by remaining shellfish reefs (e.g., biodiversity maintenance, seafood supply). More broadly, these findings exemplify how "squeeze" may be a pervasive concern for biogenic habitats along terrestrial or marine ecotones during an era of intense global change.

Abstract:Oysters form natural reefs and are important coastal foundation species that provide a wide range of ecosystem services. Clarification of the mechanisms by which tidal emersion affects oyster reef performance will help guide and direct future oyster reef restoration efforts. In the present study, we constructed artificial Pacific oyster ( Crassostrea gigas ) reefs in the coastal zones of the Yellow River Delta and quantified the effects of tidal emersion on the growth, density, biomass, element (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus) content within tissues, and health conditions of oysters. The results showed that temperature change driven by the tidal emersion effect was one of the major forces affecting reef performance. In the experimental field, fully immersed oysters performed better than partially exposed ones in terms of growth and density. The mean biomass of the fully immersed oysters was 2.88-fold higher than that of the partially exposed oysters ( p < 0.05). However, we found that tidal emersion had no significant effect on the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus content within oyster tissues. Oyster health condition revealed by the biochemical marker and whole-genome gene expression analyses demonstrated that the oysters partially exposed to air presented enhanced oxidative and lipid metabolism and were forced to allocate metabolic energy towards defense against stress rather than growth, which suggested sub-optimal health conditions. Overall, the study indicated that full immersion is optimal for oyster reef restoration in the experimental field. The results of this research will provide future conservationists, aquaculturists, and other specialists with a better understanding of tidal emersion effects on the success of oyster reef restoration to achieve region-specific restoration goals and improve protection of the coastal environment.

Abstract:Coral reef ecosystems are being fundamentally restructured by local human impacts and climate-driven marine heatwaves that trigger mass coral bleaching and mortality 1 . Reducing local impacts can increase reef resistance to and recovery from bleaching 2 . However, resource managers lack clear advice on targeted actions that best support coral reefs under climate change 3 and sector-based governance means most land- and sea-based management efforts remain siloed 4 . Here we combine surveys of reef change with a unique 20-year time series of land–sea human impacts that encompassed an unprecedented marine heatwave in Hawai'i. Reefs with increased herbivorous fish populations and reduced land-based impacts, such as wastewater pollution and urban runoff, had positive coral cover trajectories predisturbance. These reefs also experienced a modest reduction in coral mortality following severe heat stress compared to reefs with reduced fish populations and enhanced land-based impacts. Scenario modelling indicated that simultaneously reducing land–sea human impacts results in a three- to sixfold greater probability of a reef having high reef-builder cover four years postdisturbance than if either occurred in isolation. International efforts to protect 30% of Earth's land and ocean ecosystems by 2030 are underway 5 . Our results reveal that integrated land–sea management could help achieve coastal ocean conservation goals and provide coral reefs with the best opportunity to persist in our changing climate.

Hydrodynamic and biogeochemical evolution of a restored intertidal oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reef

Abstract:Oyster reef restoration is increasingly used as a tool for restoring lost ecosystem services in degraded aquatic systems, but questions remain about the efficacy of the practice and when/if restored reefs may behave similarly to intact natural reefs. In this case study, field observations highlighted short- (<1 month post-restoration) and longer-term (30 months; 3 recruitment cycles) transformations in canopy, hydrodynamic, and biogeochemical characteristics of a restored intertidal oyster reef relative to nearby intact and degraded reefs. Within 12 months of restoration, live oyster density (326 oysters/m2), mean shell length (47 mm), and mean canopy height (76 mm) did not differ significantly from those observed on a reference reef. Lowering of the reef crest during restoration reestablished over-reef flow and periodic tidal inundation, improving hydraulic connectivity between the channel and the reef surface. This immediately restored much of the reef's hydrodynamic function and eliminated the irregular flow patterns observed on the previously degraded reef. Results showed that mean flow (channel-to-reef flow attenuation: 98% / 62%; within/above canopy) and velocity normalized turbulence (w'2¯/U2: 10-1/10-2; ϵ/U3: 100/10-2 m-1) characteristics were similar across the restored and reference reefs within 1 year of restoration, with temporal changes in mixing within the canopy attributed to increases in live oyster density. Nutrient pools (mean total carbon, total nitrogen) on reference and restored reefs had similar magnitudes within 1 year (C: 39 & 33 g/kg, N: 1.5 & 1.8 g/kg), while increases in DOC and NH4+ were correlated with the presence of live oysters. Most changes that occurred on the restored reef were linked to oyster recruitment and canopy growth, which modulated hydrodynamics through direct flow interactions and controlled sediment nutrient and organic matter content through waste deposition and burial.

Abstract:Ocean warming and acidification from increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 represent major global threats to coral reefs, and are in many regions exacerbated by local-scale disturbances such as overfishing and nutrient enrichment. Our understanding of global threats and local-scale disturbances on reefs is growing, but their relative contribution to reef resilience and vulnerability in the future is unclear. Here, we analyse quantitatively how different combinations of CO2 and fishing pressure on herbivores will affect the ecological resilience of a simplified benthic reef community, as defined by its capacity to maintain and recover to coral-dominated states. We use a dynamic community model integrated with the growth and mortality responses for branching corals (Acropora) and fleshy macroalgae (Lobophora). We operationalize the resilience framework by parameterizing the response function for coral growth (calcification) by ocean acidification and warming, coral bleaching and mortality by warming, macroalgal mortality by herbivore grazing and macroalgal growth via nutrient loading. The model was run for changes in sea surface temperature and water chemistry predicted by the rise in atmospheric CO2 projected from the IPCC's fossil-fuel intensive A1FI scenario during this century. Results demonstrated that severe acidification and warming alone can lower reef resilience (via impairment of coral growth and increased coral mortality) even under high grazing intensity and low nutrients. Further, the threshold at which herbivore overfishing (reduced grazing) leads to a coral–algal phase shift was lowered by acidification and warming. These analyses support two important conclusions: Firstly, reefs already subjected to herbivore overfishing and nutrification are likely to be more vulnerable to increasing CO2. Secondly, under CO2 regimes above 450–500 ppm, management of local-scale disturbances will become critical to keeping reefs within an Acropora-rich domain.

Abstract:Oyster reefs are invaluable ecosystems that provide a wide array of critical ecosystem services, including water filtration, coastal protection, and habitat provision for various marine species. However, these essential habitats face escalating threats from climate change and anthropogenic stressors. To combat these challenges, numerous oyster restoration initiatives have been undertaken, representing a global effort to preserve and restore these vital ecosystems. A significant, yet poorly understood, component of oyster reefs is the microbial communities. These communities account for a substantial proportion of marine reefs and are pivotal in driving key biogeochemical processes. Particularly, the environmental microbiome plays a crucial role in supporting the health and resilience of oyster populations. In our study, we sought to shed light on the microbiome within oyster reef ecosystems by characterizing the abundance, and diversity of microorganisms in the soil, biofilm, and oysters in 4 sites using a combinatorial approach to identify differentially abundant microbes by sample type and by sampling location. Our investigation revealed distinct microbial taxa in oysters, sediment and biofilm. The maximum Shannon Index indicated a slightly increased diversity in Herons Head (5.47), followed by Brickyard park (5.35), Dunphy Park (5.17) and Point Pinole (4.85). This is likely to be driven by significantly higher oyster mortality observed at Point Pinole during routine monitoring and restoration efforts. Interestingly Ruminococcus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Prevotella, Porphyromonas, Parvimonas, Neisseria, Lactococcus, Haemophilus, Fusobacterium, Dorea, Clostridium, Campylobacter, Bacteroides, and Akkermansia were positively associated with the biofilm. Yet we have limited understanding of their beneficial and/or detrimental implications to oyster growth and survival. By unraveling the intricate relationships in microbial composition across an oyster reef, our study contributes to advancing the knowledge needed to support effective oyster reef conservation and restoration efforts.

Abstract:Nature-based solutions (NBS) can be used as an alternative or in conjunction with conventional coastal defense infrastructure for flood hazard mitigation. NBS can provide resilience and ancillary benefits, such as ecosystem enhancement. Oyster reefs, an example of NBS, act as natural breakwaters and provide ecological habitat for numerous species. The effectiveness of oyster reefs as NBS depends on their growth and survival and is influenced by the surrounding hydrodynamic conditions that affect food flux and sedimentation. A point-based oyster growth model was expanded and linked with a hydrodynamic model to simulate oyster and reef growth in the South Atlantic Bight. The highest live oyster layer heights increase with velocity until a depth-dependent velocity threshold is met, where sediment deposition begins to reduce growth. The potential for wave dissipation (total reef height) is depth-limited with a broader range of favorable locations than consideration for oyster layer height alone. The reef heights predicted across the model domain were shown to reduce significant wave height across a range of tropical storm intensities.

Abstract:Oyster reefs are gaining more and more attention in marine ranching and coastal ecosystem restoration, but tremendous knowledge gaps still exist. In this study, we developed trophic models for the established artificial oyster reef (EAOR), newly deployed artificial oyster reef (NAOR), and non-reef bare substratum (NBS) ecosystems located in the Bay of Xiangyun, Bohai Sea, China, to assess the benefits of artificial oyster reef construction and to characterize the unique role of these reefs in coastal management. The analysis showed that the EAOR and NAOR ecosystems were similar to each other, but both were greatly different than the NBS ecosystem. Reefs showed greater “ecological size” and stronger top-down effects compared to the bare area. The ecosystems were not yet mature, but the EAOR and NAOR ecosystems had more complicated trophic relationships, greater potential to withstand perturbations, and higher biological carrying capacities of commercial organisms compared to the NBS ecosystem. These results demonstrated that artificial oyster reef construction resulted in great advantages to the ecosystem. For example, oysters became the structuring functional group and played a critical role in the trophic structure of the reef areas. The phytoplankton/detritus-oysters-carnivorous macrobenthos pathway developed and became dominant in these areas, thereby contributing to highly efficient secondary production. The ratios of total primary production/total respiration were < 1, indicating that the reef ecosystems responded effectively to nutrient inputs from adjacent ecosystems. We speculate that water exchange might be a critical factor influencing the maintenance of the system. Long-term monitoring of the EAOR and NAOR should be implemented for oyster protection and to assess the need to manipulate carnivorous macrobenthos to keep the systems in balance. Results of this study could benefit the restoration, exploitation, and management of oyster reefs. Further studies should take the adjacent ecosystems and anthropogenic activities into account.

Abstract:Abstract For reef framework to persist, calcium carbonate production by corals and other calcifiers needs to outpace loss due to physical, chemical, and biological erosion. This balance is both delicate and dynamic and is currently threatened by the effects of ocean warming and acidification. Although the protection and recovery of ecosystem functions are at the center of most restoration and conservation programs, decision makers are limited by the lack of predictive tools to forecast habitat persistence under different emission scenarios. To address this, we developed a modelling approach, based on carbonate budgets, that ties species-specific responses to site-specific global change using the latest generation of climate models projections (CMIP6). We applied this model to Cheeca Rocks, an outlier in the Florida Keys in terms of high coral cover, and explored the outcomes of restoration targets scheduled in the coming 20 years at this site by the Mission: Iconic Reefs restoration initiative. Additionally, we examined the potential effects of coral thermal adaptation by increasing the bleaching threshold by 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 ̊C. Regardless of coral adaptative capacity or restoration, net carbonate production at Cheeca Rocks declines heavily once the threshold for the onset of annual severe bleaching is reached. The switch from net accretion to net erosion, however, is significantly delayed by mitigation and adaptation. The maintenance of framework accretion until 2100 and beyond is possible under a decreased emission scenario coupled with thermal adaptation above 0.5 ̊C. Although restoration initiatives increase reef accretion estimates, Cheeca Rocks will only be able to keep pace with future sea-level rise in a world where anthropogenic CO 2 emissions are reduced. Present results, however, attest to the potential of restoration interventions combined with increases in coral thermal tolerance to delay the onset of mass bleaching mortalities, possibly in time for a low-carbon economy to be implemented and complementary mitigation measures to become effective.
