Abstract:Habitat restoration efforts are often limited by cost, making it important that available funds are used efficiently and effectively to achieve desired restoration goals. In this study, we evaluate habitat provision for oysters and motile epifauna on restored oyster reefs in a northwestern Gulf of Mexico estuary constructed with discrete high vertical relief (~0.6 m "reef mounds") or continuous low vertical relief (<0.08 m "reef flats"). Habitat provision on reef mounds exceeded that on reef flats within one month of construction and supported 0.75x higher oyster density, 2x higher motile epifauna biomass, and 3.6x higher motile epifauna density one year after construction. Oyster density on reef mounds remained relatively high throughout the study period, with ~2x higher oyster densities than reef flats 18 months after construction and ~1.5x higher oyster densities by the end of the study. Both reef mounds and reef flats increased oyster and epifaunal densities compared to unrestored areas. Although on-reef oyster densities were higher on reef mounds than reef flats, the total restored oyster areal density and volumetric density was higher in restored reef flat areas, primarily because the restored flats area had no gaps within its restoration boundaries. Our findings have practical value for better predicting restoration outcomes and achieving desired restoration goals based on restored oyster reef height, with reef mounds maximizing on-reef oyster and epifaunal densities and reef flats maximizing the total number of oysters per area restored or volume of substrate purchased. Understanding the benefits and tradeoffs between restoration designs will allow resource managers to improve cost-efficiencies in future restoration projects.

Abstract:Optimizing habitat restoration success requires understanding how restoration location and design enhance the persistence and function of a restored habitat. Particular attention to the configuration of structure and its interaction with landscape‐scale processes is critical for enhancing the habitat value of restored areas. We monitored six subtidal restored oyster reefs in Pamlico Sound, North Carolina, United States, to identify how oyster demographics responded to initial habitat characteristics (e.g. reef area, volume, vertical relief, and perimeter‐to‐area ratio) and how changes in habitat characteristics over time altered suitability for oysters. Changes in reef habitat were measured by repeated mapping using bathymetric and side‐scanning sonar systems. A 2‐year time series of oyster demographic data quantified oyster response to habitat changes over time. All reefs provided habitat for the settlement and growth of oysters. Within 2 years of restoration, relative differences in oyster recruitment and survival emerged and were related to variations in reef location and two‐dimensional habitat characteristics among reefs, namely reef area and perimeter‐to‐area ratio. Larger reefs that were less fragmented resisted burial from sedimentation and enhanced oyster densities and biomass relative to smaller, more fragmented reefs that became heavily sedimented and failed to support oyster recruitment and survival. Positive feedback mechanisms between habitat characteristics and oyster recruitment success were established within 1 year of restoration and were likely driven by landscape‐scale processes such as sediment dynamics and larval supply. To improve restoration success, we recommend creating larger reef surfaces with low perimeter‐to‐area ratios in areas that promote habitat persistence.

Abstract:Oyster reefs are gaining more and more attention in marine ranching and coastal ecosystem restoration, but tremendous knowledge gaps still exist. In this study, we developed trophic models for the established artificial oyster reef (EAOR), newly deployed artificial oyster reef (NAOR), and non-reef bare substratum (NBS) ecosystems located in the Bay of Xiangyun, Bohai Sea, China, to assess the benefits of artificial oyster reef construction and to characterize the unique role of these reefs in coastal management. The analysis showed that the EAOR and NAOR ecosystems were similar to each other, but both were greatly different than the NBS ecosystem. Reefs showed greater “ecological size” and stronger top-down effects compared to the bare area. The ecosystems were not yet mature, but the EAOR and NAOR ecosystems had more complicated trophic relationships, greater potential to withstand perturbations, and higher biological carrying capacities of commercial organisms compared to the NBS ecosystem. These results demonstrated that artificial oyster reef construction resulted in great advantages to the ecosystem. For example, oysters became the structuring functional group and played a critical role in the trophic structure of the reef areas. The phytoplankton/detritus-oysters-carnivorous macrobenthos pathway developed and became dominant in these areas, thereby contributing to highly efficient secondary production. The ratios of total primary production/total respiration were < 1, indicating that the reef ecosystems responded effectively to nutrient inputs from adjacent ecosystems. We speculate that water exchange might be a critical factor influencing the maintenance of the system. Long-term monitoring of the EAOR and NAOR should be implemented for oyster protection and to assess the need to manipulate carnivorous macrobenthos to keep the systems in balance. Results of this study could benefit the restoration, exploitation, and management of oyster reefs. Further studies should take the adjacent ecosystems and anthropogenic activities into account.

Abstract:Nature-based solutions (NBS) can be used as an alternative or in conjunction with conventional coastal defense infrastructure for flood hazard mitigation. NBS can provide resilience and ancillary benefits, such as ecosystem enhancement. Oyster reefs, an example of NBS, act as natural breakwaters and provide ecological habitat for numerous species. The effectiveness of oyster reefs as NBS depends on their growth and survival and is influenced by the surrounding hydrodynamic conditions that affect food flux and sedimentation. A point-based oyster growth model was expanded and linked with a hydrodynamic model to simulate oyster and reef growth in the South Atlantic Bight. The highest live oyster layer heights increase with velocity until a depth-dependent velocity threshold is met, where sediment deposition begins to reduce growth. The potential for wave dissipation (total reef height) is depth-limited with a broader range of favorable locations than consideration for oyster layer height alone. The reef heights predicted across the model domain were shown to reduce significant wave height across a range of tropical storm intensities.

Coastal squeeze on temperate reefs: Long-term shifts in salinity, water quality, and oyster-associated communities

Abstract:Foundation species, such as mangroves, saltmarshes, kelps, seagrasses, and oysters, thrive within suitable environmental envelopes as narrow ribbons along the land-sea margin. Therefore, these habitat-forming species and resident fauna are sensitive to modified environmental gradients. For oysters, many estuaries impacted by sea-level rise, channelization, and municipal infrastructure are experiencing saltwater intrusion and water-quality degradation that may alter reef distributions, functions, and services. To explore decadal-scale oyster-reef community patterns across a temperate estuary in response to environmental change, we resampled reefs in the Newport River Estuary (NRE) during 2013-2015 that had previously been studied during 1955-1956. We also coalesced historical NRE reef distribution (1880s-2015), salinity (1913-2015), and water-quality-driven shellfish closure boundary (1970s-2015) data to document environmental trends that could influence reef ecology and service delivery. Over the last 60-120 years, the entire NRE has shifted toward higher salinities. Consequently, oyster-reef communities have become less distinct across the estuary, manifest by 20%-27% lower species turnover and decreased faunal richness among NRE reefs in the 2010s relative to the 1950s. During the 2010s, NRE oyster-reef communities tended to cluster around a euhaline, intertidal-reef type more so than during the 1950s. This followed faunal expansions farther up estuary and biological degradation of subtidal reefs as NRE conditions became more marine and favorable for aggressive, reef-destroying taxa. In addition to these biological shifts, the area of suitable bottom on which subtidal reefs persist (contracting due to up-estuary intrusion of marine waters) and support human harvest (driven by water quality, eroding from up-estuary) has decreased by >75% since the natural history of NRE reefs was first explored. This "coastal squeeze" on harvestable subtidal oysters (reduced from a 4.5-km to a 0.75-km envelope along the NRE's main axis) will likely have consequences regarding the economic incentives for future oyster conservation, as well as the suite of services delivered by remaining shellfish reefs (e.g., biodiversity maintenance, seafood supply). More broadly, these findings exemplify how "squeeze" may be a pervasive concern for biogenic habitats along terrestrial or marine ecotones during an era of intense global change.
Data-Driven Coral Reef Rehabilitation Using New Biomimicking, Advanced Materials Artificial Reefs

Abstract:Abstract Globally, artificial reefs (ARs) are being increasingly used as a coral reef restoration strategy, and ARs made from conventional substrates (e.g. metal, concrete) have had limited success for coral reef conservation due to structure size and lack of pre-deployment engineering. To curb further deterioration on reefs, technological advances in restoration methods must be quickly tested and applied on a large scale. Here, we present the results of the first IntelliReefs biomimicking “Oceanite” nanotechnology ARs. We compared benthic community composition on three Oceanite ARs 14 months after deployment in Sint Maarten. We also examined fish abundance, diversity, and behaviour on the ARs. The results from this study suggest that Oceanite can enhance local biodiversity, attract coral recruits, provide food and protection for large fish communities, and develop a healthy early coral reef community in 14 months. IntelliReefs' future research will focus on large-scale deployments and further development of site-, species-, and function-specific substrates to optimize AR conservation goals and increase project success. Our Ocean-Shot will deploy durable, bio-enhanced reefs that build resilience to climate change, increase economic benefits, and coastal protection for seaside communities. Oceanite can further be customized for specific stressor mitigation (e.g., pathogens, warming, acidification, reduced water quality, invasive species).

Abstract:Global degradation and the collapse of valuable coastal ecosystems has resulted in major efforts to reestablish ecosystem engineering species that provide valuable services like ecosystem-based coastal defense (EBCD). However, conditional outcomes of ecosystem engineering effects make it hard to predict the services provided by such restored systems. In this study we focused on reefs constructed with Crassostrea gigas shells on a sand nourishment at the Oesterdam, in the Oosterschelde tidal bay in the Netherlands. We investigated how the environmental setting, waves and currents, influence sediment stabilisation, as well as oyster spat recruitment and the development of associated biodiversity.

Abstract:Over 85 % of oyster reefs have been lost globally due to disease, overharvesting, global warming, and pollution. Consideration of the ecosystem services provided by healthy oyster reefs (e.g., coastal protection, water purification and carbon burial) has driven recent research and restoration efforts worldwide. However, hydrodynamic studies, specifically looking at the effects of different levels of wave exposure on the ecomorphodynamics of oyster reefs, are scarce. In this study, we consider oyster reefs in microtidal estuaries under different levels of relative wave exposure to determine how hydrodynamics may shape reef morphology and how reef morphology affects wave dissipation. We quantify oyster reef morphology through spatial analysis, using morphometrics and spatial density and relate these to the ability of oyster reefs to dissipate wave energy. Field campaigns were undertaken at three microtidal sites in southeast Australia with different hydrodynamic exposure and morphology: Gamay (Botany Bay), Port Hacking and Crookhaven River. We found that reef morphology and orientation is related to estuarine hydrodynamic conditions and thus we propose an ecomorphodynamic model with a continuum of morphologies from sparse reefs aligned perpendicular to the tidal currents and incoming waves (patch reefs), through broken up barriers semi-aligned or obliquely to the tidal flows (string reefs), to the total barrier that exists under the lowest hydrodynamic conditions (fringing reefs). The highest dissipative ability of locally generated wind waves occurred at Crookhaven (patch reef, 165 kW/m 2 ), and lowest at Gamay (string reef, 11.66 kW/m 2 ). Our results suggest that reef morphology, and orientation to currents and waves, influence wave dissipation, and that hydrodynamic conditions in turn influence reef morphology. These findings are important to inform future reef restoration under increasingly severe climate change conditions to optimise ecosystem services on restored oyster reefs.

Abstract:Oysters have been recognized as ecological engineers for aquatic ecosystems, as oyster reefs provide critical habitats and foraging locations for other marine species. In the past few decades, anthropogenic activities have negatively impacted oyster reef ecosystems across the globe, resulting in a significant decline in their population. This review critically examines the causes and extent of oyster reef degradation, as well as the effectiveness of restoration initiatives employed to reverse this decline. Furthermore, this review evaluates the effectiveness of restoration strategies employed to rehabilitate oyster reefs. Different approaches, such as genetic improvement, suitable site selection, and oyster seeding to enhance oyster reef restorations, are critically reviewed in this paper. Furthermore, some advanced restoration approaches such as 3D printing, shell recycling, and acoustics technologies are also discussed in this paper, which opens the new doors for researchers in the field of restoration ecology. Challenges and barriers hindering successful restoration are also addressed, including financial constraints, regulatory complexities, and public engagement. The findings and insights presented herein contribute to the growing body of knowledge on oyster reef ecology and serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, scientists, and conservation practitioners seeking effective strategies for restoring these vital coastal ecosystems.

Abstract:Coastal shorelines are a key interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and are vital for human livelihood. As a result, shorelines have experienced substantial human modifications worldwide. Shoreline "hardening" – the construction of armor including seawalls, bulkheads, or rip-rap – is a common modification that has substantial negative ecological effects. Currently, restoration involving the removal of armor and replacement with "living" shorelines is becoming an established practice. Still, the ecological response to armor removal is oftentimes unpredictable and site-specific. We hypothesized that the confluence of larger-scale geophysical features might strongly influence ecological restoration outcomes at particular locations. To measure the effectiveness of armor removal in the context of broad-scale geophysical features across the Salish Sea, WA, USA, we studied 26 paired restored and natural reference beaches of the same shoretype (feeder bluff, accretion shoreform, or pocket beach), as well as corresponding fetch, sub-basin, and percent of shoreline sediment drift cell armored. Sites were restored for an average of six years. We gauged restoration effectiveness based on levels of five ecological response variables: beach wrack (percent, depth), logs (count, width), sediments (percent sand), vegetation (percent overhanging, count of fallen trees), and insects (density, taxa richness). We found that armor removal often restored these variables to natural levels, but that restoration response was dependent on geophysical features such as shoretype and fetch. Natural beaches did have higher measurements of overhanging vegetation, fallen trees, and insect taxa richness, as these features likely take time to mature at restored beaches. Feeder bluffs had a higher proportion of surface sand and number of fallen trees than other shoretypes, coinciding with the erosion of bluff material, whereas natural pocket beaches within bordering rocky headlands had higher insect densities. Sites with a large fetch had higher input of deposited wrack and logs, whereas sites with a small fetch had higher input from localized terrestrial sources – fallen trees and eroding sand. By incorporating the effectiveness of restoration with landscape features such as shoretype and fetch, we can more effectively plan for future restoration actions and better predict their outcomes.

Assessing the Efficacy of a Bouchot-Style Shellfish Reef as a Restoration Option in a Temperate Estuary

Abstract:Shellfish reefs around the world have become degraded, and recent efforts have focused on restoring these valuable habitats. This study is the first to assess the efficacy of a bouchot-style reef, where mussels were seeded onto wooden stakes and deployed in a hypereutrophic estuary in Australia. While >60% of translocated mussels survived one month, after ten months, only 2% remained alive, with this mortality being accompanied, at least initially, by declining body condition. Mussel survival, growth, body condition and recruitment were greater on the top section of the stake, implying that the distance from the substrate was important. More fish species inhabited the reefs (31) than unstructured control sites (17). Reefs were also colonised by a range of invertebrate species, including 11 native and six non-indigenous species. However, the number of individuals declined from 4495 individuals from 14 species in December 2019 to 35 individuals representing 4 species in March 2021, likely due to hypoxic bottom water conditions following unseasonal rainfall. Although the bouchot-style reefs were unable to sustain mussels and other invertebrates over sequential years, this approach has the potential to be successful if deployed in shallow water or intertidal zones, which are largely exempt from biotic and abiotic stressors characteristic of deeper waters in microtidal estuaries.

Abstract:As a "marine ecological engineer", the oyster reefs not only perform important ecological functions, but also reduce the damage caused by waves to protective structures such as seawalls. However, oyster reefs in shallow water change the nonlinear characteristics of waves and affect sediment transport and coastal evolution. Based on Fourier spectrum and analysis of Wavelet Transform, the influence of artificial bag oyster reefs on the energy and nonlinear phase coupling of irregular waves are studied through physical experiment. The results show that oyster reefs have a substantial effect on the energy of primary harmonic, which transfer to higher harmonics through triad interactions, and a considerable reduction in primary harmonic energy and an increase in higher harmonics energy are reflected in the energy spectra. The transmission spectrum behind the oyster reefs shows three peaks at primary, secondary and third harmonics. The bicoherence spectrum indicates that the peaks at secondary and third harmonics mainly result from the self-coupling of the primary harmonics and phase coupling between the primary and secondary harmonics respectively. As the water depth increases, the degree of nonlinear coupling between wave components decreases, which leads to the energy of wave components at different frequencies increases. With increasing top width, the length of the shoaling region increases, and the growth of triad nonlinear interactions are observed in wavelet-based bicoherence spectra, resulting in the spectral peak energy decreasing while the secondary harmonics energy increasing in the spectrum. Finally, the potential application of an ecological system composed by "oyster reefs + mangroves" is discussed. As the effect of water depth on wave energy is much greater than that of top width, in artificial oyster reef construction, it is recommended that keep the oyster reefs non-submerged in terms of wave dissipation. Further studies should take the dynamic growth effect of oyster reefs into account.

Nearshore placement of dredged material for estuarine shoreline restoration in Berkeley Township, New Jersey

Abstract:Nearshore placement of sediments for beach nourishment has become a standard, cost-effective method for shore protection along ocean-facing shorelines but is not a widely adopted practice within tidal estuaries due to environmental concerns such as turbidity, burial of benthic and shore organisms, and pollution. This paper describes the monitoring and evaluation of nearshore placement of dredged materials at Goodluck Point, Berkeley Township, New Jersey. A total of approximately 4,500 cubic meters of dredged material was placed in the nearshore to create a parallel bar along a 0.5 km stretch of existing beach. The narrow beach is the front edge of a marsh system severely impacted by erosion due to lack of sediment supply compounded with local currents and waves that transport sediment out of the beach system offshore and alongshore. This beach erosion is exacerbated during coastal storms events. The Goodluck Point marsh is part of the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Nearshore placement was determined to be part of an experimental project designed to evaluate methods of restoration for the marsh and reduce future impacts. The design for the nearshore placement called for sand to be placed in a temporary parallel bar just offshore of the existing beach, and over time it would weld to the beach. Analysis of pre- and post-placement surveys indicate that much of the dredged material placed in the project area remained there throughout the 18-month monitoring period. However, a combination of storms during and after placement, as well as ongoing longshore transport processes, resulted in the sand being washed south along the beach and accumulating in just the southern 200 meters of the project area. This paper introduces and suggests that the concept of “process-based design” will maximize resiliency benefits through more extensive pre-placement monitoring and modeling to identify optimal placement strategies. Process-based design is a beneficial use strategy that takes advantage of natural sediment transport processes to enhance or re-create nature-based shore protection features.

Abstract:1. Ecosystems are degrading worldwide, with severe ecological and economic consequences. Restoration is becoming an important tool to regain ecosystem services and preserve biodiversity. However, in harsh ecosystems dominated by habitat-modifying organisms, restoration is often expensive and failure prone. Establishment of such habitat-modifiers often hinges on self-facilitation feedbacks generated by traits that emerge when individuals aggregate, causing density- or patch-size dependent establishment thresholds. To overcome these thresholds, adult or juvenile habitat-forming species are often transplanted in clumped designs, or stress-mitigating structures are deployed. However, current restoration approaches focus on introducing or facilitating a single life-stage, while many habitat modifiers experience multiple bottlenecks throughout their life as they transition through sequential life-stages.2. Here, we define and experimentally test 'life-cycle-informed restoration', a restoration concept that focuses on overcoming multiple bottlenecks throughout the target species' lifetime. To provide proof-of-concept, and show its general applicability, we carried out complementary experiments in intertidal soft-sediment systems in Florida and the Netherlands where oysters and mussels act as reef-building habitat modifiers. We used biodegradable structures designed to facilitate bivalve-reef recovery by both stimulating settlement with hard and fibrous substrates and post-settlement survival by reducing predation.3. Our trans-Atlantic experiments demonstrate that these structures enabled bivalve reef formation by: (1) facilitating larval recruitment via species-specific settlement substrates, and (2) enhancing post-settlement survival by lowering predation. In the Netherlands, structures with coir rope most strongly facilitated mussels by providing fibrous settlement substrate, and predation-lowering spatially-complex hard attachment substrate. In Florida, oysters were greatly facilitated by hard substrates, while coir rope proved unbeneficial.4. Synthesis and applications. Our findings demonstrate that artificial biodegradable reefs can enhance bivalve-reef restoration across the Atlantic by mimicking emergent traits that ameliorate multiple bottlenecks over the reef-forming organism' life-cycle. This highlights the potential of our approach as a cost-effective and practical tool for nature managers to restore systems dominated by habitat modifiers whose natural recovery is hampered by multiple life-stage-dependent bottlenecks. Therefore, investment in understanding how to achieve life-cycle informed restoration on larger scales and whether the method it is applicable to restore other ecosystems is now required.

Abstract:Global decline of oyster reefs prompted interest in restoring these valuable habitats, which stabilize shorelines and are home to diverse fauna. Recent efforts highlight the need for careful selection of effective restoration sites that will promote oyster growth and maximize shoreline stabilization. Boating is a significant contributor to oyster mortality in Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, USA , where energy from boat wakes dislodge oysters shoreward and create dead margins of disarticulated oyster shell. These boat wake effects are well-documented; however, few studies concentrated on oyster recruitment in Northern Mosquito Lagoon, which is bordered by developed coastline along a heavily trafficked boating channel. In this 20-week field study, we compared the settlement density of eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica , on concrete substrate at four sites in Northern Mosquito Lagoon that varied in boating intensity (low and high) and proximity to existing C. virginica reef (≤ 1 m and ≥ 49 m). Surprisingly, oyster settlement was greater at sites with high boating intensity. However, elevated recruitment may have been due to increased tidal flow and potential larval supply in the boating channel, rather than a direct effect of boat wakes. Proximity to existing C. virginica reef also had a positive effect on oyster settlement and a negative effect on barnacle settlement. Our results suggest that ideal sites for recruitment and juvenile survival of oysters coincide with areas of high boating activity, adequate water flow, and proximity to natural reefs in this developed coastal habitat.

Abstract:Nature-based solutions, such as shellfish reefs, can support natural coastal defence and be a potential solution for climate-resilient shorelines in the future. In the Belgian Part of the North Sea, the "Coastbusters" projects aim to develop nature-based coastal protection by favouring subtidal mussel bed establishment on the seafloor through typical longline aquaculture techniques. Mussel beds are dependent on environmental conditions, and both influence the physical and biogeochemical features in a soft-sediment environment. Therefore, a comprehensive ecological monitoring program is essential to assess the success of future mussel bed development and its influence on the surrounding ecosystem. For establishing a monitoring baseline of the two experimental areas, a combination of conventional benthic assessment methods (grab sampling and granulometry) and non-invasive techniques (sediment profile imaging and transect diving video surveys) were utilised. Although mussel reefs did not yet develop by the time of this study, clear differences in ecological and sedimentological characteristics were found between two experimental areas (sheltered and exposed), subjected to slightly different hydrodynamic conditions. The one sheltered by coastal sandbanks was dominated by fine-muddy sand, higher species richness, biomass, and higher biological activity (burrows, fauna, and biological beds) as observed by all methods in one or another way. Moreover, functional diversity indices revealed a higher partitioning of the total available resources, suggesting more complex ecological processes in the sheltered area. Conversely, the area more exposed to the open sea was dominated by more sandy sediments, and fewer organisms were found. The combination of those different monitoring tools provides an integrated, complementary view, from different perspectives, on the biological, physical and functional characteristics of the study areas.

Abstract:The beneficial or detrimental effects of human-built marine structures (piers, breakwaters, and seawalls) on macrozoobenthic assemblages and diversities are currently underexplored. The present study investigated the enhancement of β-diversity of oysterbed-associated species on breakwaters constructed along sandy beaches. We compared habitat complexities and species assemblages among artificial breakwater shores (ABS), a natural rocky shore (NS), and an embayment shore (ES). Oysterbed habitat complexity was found to be greatest on the ABS due to the successional colonization of the reef-forming estuarine oyster, Saccostrea echinata, followed by the colonization of boring bivalves and burrowing annelids. High-resolution taxonomic data revealed that the ABS supports the greatest species richness, including 48.1% unique species and 33.3% species shared with the embayment shore. The other shores uniquely or in combination with ABS support up to 11.1% of the total species richness associated with the oysterbeds (n = 81). Taxonomic dominance in terms of species number was Mollusca > Annelida > Arthropoda. This study reveals that ABS enhances β-diversity by ~91% (Jaccard dissimilarity index), which is driven by the sequential cascading events of (1) sheltering of shores, (2) colonization of novel habitat-forming oysters, (3) novel macrozoobenthic species recruitment from adjacent shores and sheltered embayments, including habitat-forming bivalves and annelids, and (4) the recruitment of macrozoobenthic species to boreholes. ABS habitat complexity derives from a spatially distinct, three-tiered ecological engineering system, involving (1) breakwater construction (100 m), (2) reef-forming oysters (10 m), and (3) boring bivalves and burrowing annelids (<10 cm). Irrespective of the purpose of their construction, breakwaters along extended sandy shores can potentially increase the resilience (β-diversity) and regional interconnectivity of hard surface macrozoobenthic species.
