Abstract:Modern engineering systems tend to be more complicated than ever before, facilitated by novel design concepts and advancements in new technologies such as sensors, materials, and structural (or functional) integrity. Reliability and safety investigations are to find the most feasible, economical, and easy-to-follow solutions for failure prevention and performance improvement with the assistance of operation state modeling and analysis, failure and reliability analysis with environmental issues, maintenance strategy planning, and so forth. The demand for state-of-the-art solutions in these areas is surging, providing feasible approaches to guide both performance and profitability enhancement. In response, this special issue showcases original research that addresses newly emerged reliability and safety challenges in modern engineering systems. It contributes innovative ideas to academia and presents the latest and most intriguing applications in engineering practice. This special issue publishes novel, and the most representative reliability and safety achievements presented at the 2023 International Conference on Quality, Reliability, Risk, Maintenance, and Safety Engineering (QR2MSE2023), which was held from 26−29 July 2023, Kunming, Yunnan, China. QR2MSE (http://www.qr2mse.org/) was founded in 2011 and dedicated itself for more than 10 years to providing innovative ideas and cutting-edge research results, bridging gaps between academia and industry and between ongoing research and newly emerged state-of-the-art methodologies. Showcasing the most recent applications of asset management, reliability, and quality tools in the design, manufacturing, and operation and maintenance of engineering systems also falls into the target of QR2MSE conferences. Altogether, 36 papers have been accepted out of a much larger number of submissions, addressing a diverse range of topics: reliability modeling and analysis, reliability-based design and optimization, failure/safety analysis and prevention, as well as maintainability. Reliability is the capability of a system to work under the desired design function at a given condition and period. The discipline of reliability modeling and analysis involves constructing models that reveal critical indices for the reliability of systems and structures. In this special issue, focusing on a systemic perspective, Zhao et al.1 developed a system reliability analysis model for loading-dependent systems considering overloads. The approach benefits reliability prediction, system design, and maintenance optimization of systems with cascading failures. Employing a rigorous analytical approach through the Fuzzy Failure Mode and Effect Analysis methodology, Feng et al.2 conducted a failure analysis of floating offshore wind turbines. The method provides a practical concept in terms of integrating objective data and multisource subjective information. Additionally, Bai et al.3 came up with a reliability analysis method dealing with competitive failure processes considering the coupling effect of multiple shock and degradation processes. The model proposed contributes to the reliability analysis and risk prevention of systems with multiple failure features. To address the uncertainties inherent in reliability analysis, Wang et al.4 created a dynamic reliability analysis approach to model the failure mechanism of satellite antenna systems with the assistance of parameter uncertainty modeling. Combined with active learning algorithms, this approach achieves accurate results compared to existing models. Ran et al.5 presented a failure prediction model for mechanical systems based on meta-action. The model provides a new framework of reliability analysis/prediction according to both subjective and objective inputs. Huang et al.6 developed a new ordering method of basic events in a dynamic fault tree. The sequential binary decision diagram-based method can simplify computational complexity in ordering basic events. Chen et al.7 provided a new evidence-based fault tree analysis method for system reliability analysis. It can deal with failures with both aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. From the structural perspective, Huang et al.8 developed an adaptive optimized Kriging combining efficient sampling model, supporting structural reliability analysis by Kriging models. The proposed method is able to compute accurate failure probability with limited inputs. Di et al.9 published a framework for reliability analysis and global sensitivity analysis with the assistance of finite element analysis, the D-Vine model, and Copula. The method realizes multidimensional global sensitivity analysis with correlated inputs. Moreover, Peng et al.10 presented a probabilistic double linear damage accumulation model to characterize the uncertainty of damage accumulation. With the consideration of uncertainties in the modeling process, the proposed method has better predictive ability than existing state-of-the-art approaches. Wang et al.11 developed a zone-based failure risk assessment method for fatigue crack growth caused by initial defects. The method computes convinced failure probability due to the careful modeling of uncertainties caused by defects. Wang et al.12 provided a probabilistic fatigue life prediction framework with a mean stress correction model. Instead of estimating the fatigue life as a fixed value, the method estimates a distribution for the fatigue life of structures. Yang et al.13 proposed a concept to solve joint basic probability assignments based on neural networks and copula functions. This method can construct copula functions through neural networks, avoiding multiple function selection. Liu et al.14 introduced a fatigue analysis method by employing the Cyclic Cohesive Zone Model and accounting for parameter uncertainties. The model contributes accurate reliability estimation based on the results given by fatigue analysis. Qian et al.15 developed a Whale Optimization Algorithm–Extreme Gradient Boosting Surrogate model to analyze the Fatigue reliability of structures. The model can consider aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. Reliability-based design and optimization encompass strategies that ensure functional demands are met and overall performance of engineering systems is enhanced. Specifically, focusing on gear reliability design, Gu et al.16 introduced a time-varying meshing stiffness model under mixed electrohydrodynamic lubrication conditions. This method facilitates a deeper understanding of gear failures, serving as a foundation for enhancing reliable design and performance. Additionally, from a systems perspective, Guo et al.17 developed an optimal redundancy allocation method for series systems with hierarchical dependent structures. This approach utilizes copula theory to advance the field of reliability optimization design. Li et al18 proposed a risk assessment method to evaluate the fire safety of alternative design schemes. The results confirm that the method can effectively evaluate the fire safety of alternative designs for cruise ships compared to the standard-based scheme. Bai et al.19 developed a combined high-and-low-cycle fatigue reliability analysis framework to theoretically extend the high-and-low-cycle fatigue reliability analysis to the reliability-based optimal design sector. More interestingly, to ensure the safety design of offshore structures, Feng et al.20 tested wave loads, encompassing vertical, horizontal, and torsional moments for a container ship. The insights garnered contribute to the fatigue analysis and safety design of offshore/ship structures. To address multiple failure modes that occur independently or in correlation, Yu et al.21 proposed a reliability analysis method that meticulously accounts for the interdependencies among various failure modes. The methods can suggest optimized bearing size parameters and select appropriate initial clearances for bearing design. To analyze complex and stochastic failures, Zhang et al.22 presented a probabilistic fatigue life assessment method based on Bayesian Gaussian process regression. The results suggested by the proposed method are beneficial for the fatigue reliability design of wind turbine blades. Failure/safety analysis and prevention trace the root reasons for failures/events/accidents, find failure behaviors, and determine the preventive actions. To be specific, Wang et al.23 proposed an inference for maximum ranking set sampling with unequal samples and multiple dependent failure causes, which is an asset for the complementary dependent competing risks modeling and analysis. Additionally, Liang et al.24 published an image augmentation-based ice monitoring method, which can guide the safe navigation of polar ships with the assistance of accurate ice state detection. In order to identify critical elements in complex systems, Cheng et al.25 designed a two-stage hybrid feature selection model that combines the filter method and particle swarm algorithm with Bayesian optimization, streamlining the process of identifying significant system features. Zhang et al.26 presented a degradation model for space power systems that incorporates competitive failures under irradiation conditions. The model contributes to the failure prevention of complex systems with both software and hardware failures. Zheng et al.27 proposed a novel double-modified hierarchical Bayes approach to handle Weibull characteristic data. The model is proved to be capable of enhancing the accuracy of reliability/risk estimation. Tang et al.28 proposed a performance reliability evaluation method for high-pressure internal gear pumps. The model provides convincing results as a result of considering flow, noise, and gear strength and contributes to failure prevention of pumps in high internal pressure situations. Maintainability reflects the degree to which a system recovers from an undesired state. Maintainability investigations involve the comprehensive assessment of anticipated evidence, such as Remaining Useful Life (RUL) and the results of fault diagnosis or prognosis, to determine optimal operation and maintenance solutions. In this special issue, Guo et al.29 provided a dual-channel transferable RUL prediction method integrated with Bayesian deep learning and domain adaptation. The method provides reliable RUL predictions under uncertainties introduced by variations of devices. Qiu et al.30 presented a variable-speed-condition fault diagnosis method, namely WSO-VMD-SWIN. The method provides accurate fault diagnosis results against noise conditions. For the same purpose, Jiang et al.31 presented a novel intelligent fault diagnosis method based on a capsule network with a Fast-Routing algorithm. The method performs well in noise scenarios. To further deal with denoising issues in fault identification, Li et al.32 published a neural network-based parallel encoder-decoder method to combine the long short-term memory network and the temporal convolutional network as well as a self-attention module for encoder and decoder. The method assesses the performance of health indicators. Ling et al.33 developed a Bayesian method to analyze optimal burn-in policy for heterogeneous components with minimal repair with the assistance of nonhomogeneous Poisson processes and the Bayesian method. The mode contributes to getting optimal burn-in settings under optimized cost and performance. Qi et al.34 presented an optimal maintenance policy considering imperfect switching. The method can consider both preventive maintenance and preventive switching of components. Wang et al.35 presented a pyramidal residual attention model for short-term forecasting. The method can predict the wind power of wind farms and contribute to maintenance/profitability issues of large-scale systems. Safaei and Taghipour36 developed a reliability analysis model for repairable systems with multiple failure causes in the presence of covariates and imperfect maintenance. The proposed method provides efficient estimations and yields more straightforward interpretations. In the end, the support from Quality and Reliability Engineering International for the provision of this special issue is deeply appreciated, including but not limited to its editors and staff for their professional assistance in the editorial process.
