Abstract:In power electronic-based power systems (PEPS), challenges are arising such as how to ensure a reliable power system, although increasingly efforts have been made to enhance the reliability of power electronics at the component-level and converter-level. Existing methods for single converter reliability analysis might not be scalable for system-level reliability analysis in power systems. Thus, this paper presents a general concept on the reliability analysis in PEPS to curb the arising issues. The concept considers the individual reliability matrices and more importantly, takes the complicated interactions and cross coupling-effects among multiple converters into account and thereby improve the reliability of next generation power systems. This will be beneficial for power system operators, end-users and the average electrical consumer with the possibility to decrease the costs related to component failures, maintenance and also system downtime as a result of advancing the system reliability.

Abstract:By using the internationally universal methods,the power system component reliability data issued by the Reliability Management Center of China Electricity Council(CEC) were analyzed and calculated,and the average reliability indices of power system components in China in recent 5 years are given,including that of the generating units,transmission and distribution equipment,and HVDC transmission systems.Considering the characteristics of hybrid AC/DC system reliability analysis,the defects in the statistical content and method for DC system reliability data are discussed,and suggestions are proposed.

Abstract:With the introduction of market mechanisms into electric power industry, there is conflict between power system reliability and system economic efficiency. How to maintain system reliability in power markets is becoming a hot issue. This paper summarizes what has been achieved on the study of relationship between power system reliability and system economic efficiency and then makes expectations for the future study. It is proposed that the types of system reliability indices integrating system economic efficiency into system reliability performance should be put forward and in the deregulated environment, system or component reliability should not be seen as constraints upon system operation but some kind of special resources. It is stated that the ways of maintaining system reliability by means of market mechanisms should be explored.

Abstract:Abstract Electric power development is the key factor of economic development, but also an important guarantee of industrial modernization. At present, with the improvement of people’s quality of life, electricity has become an indispensable part of ensuring people’s lives. Therefore, the stable and reliable development of power system has an important impact on economic development, industrial modernization and people’s lives. With the continuous maturity of the reliability theory, the power system and its combination have evolved into an important application subject called the reliability evaluation of the power system, which has penetrated into the whole industrial chain of the power system, which is a reliable guarantee for the industrial chain to gain economic and social benefits. Based on the analysis of the operation reliability of power system, this paper puts forward the main measures to improve the operation reliability of power system in order to meet the operation requirements.

Abstract:Reactive power plays a significant rule in power system reliability and security. Reactive power is considered as the network constraint in conventional reliability evaluation techniques. The impact of the failures of reactive power sources such as synchronous condensers and compensators on system reliability has not been considered in the existing reliability techniques. This paper presents a technique to evaluate system and load point reliability indices of power systems considering reactive power shortages due to the failures caused by reactive power sources. The reliability indices due to the reactive power shortages are separated from those due to the real power shortages. Two reliability indices related to reactive power shortage are proposed. The IEEE 30-bus system is modified and analyzed to illustrate the proposed technique. The results provide very important information for system planners and operators for reactive power management.

Abstract:This article aims to provide an update of the reliability aspects of research on power electronic components and hardware systems. It introduces the latest advances in the understanding of failure mechanisms, testing methods, accumulated damage modeling, and mission-profile-based reliability prediction. Component-level examples (e.g., Si IGBT modules, SiC MOSFETs, GaN devices, capacitors, and magnetic components) are used for illustration purposes in addition to system-level studies. The limitations and associated open questions are discussed to identify future research opportunities in power electronics reliability.

Reliability and Economic Evaluation of the China Southern Power Grid

Abstract:The China southern power grid is now the only long-distance and huge capacity power system with AC and DC transmission lines in parallel in China. The reliability and economic evaluation of it is carried out based on the reliability evaluation software package TPLAN. By calculating the system reliability indices, we get an overview of the reliability of the China southern power grid, and draw the conclusion that its severity grade is Grade 2. By calculating the area and load bus reliability indices, we draw the conclusion that Guangdong province is the most unsubstantial part of the China southern power grid. In order to improve the reliability of the China southern power grid, we should pay special attention to improving the reliability of Guangdong province first. The conclusion is confirmed by the economic analysis of the China southern power grid based on the concept of CCDF. Once the algorithm is selected, the statistic data will affect the results greatly. In this paper, the sensitivity of evaluation results to statistic data is studied. Works done in this paper are particularly valuable for later planning and operation of power systems in China

Abstract:With the development of power market,exoteric grid-net and the appearance of independent power generation companies,more and more new problems come up continuously.As a result,the traditional reliability index framework can no longer meet these new requirements.So a new reliability index framework need to be established as quickly as possible.In this paper,the research on the development of bulk power system reliability index framework is reviewed at first,then the new trend of reliability research under power market,new evaluation criterion on reliability index,new demand on index framework given by optimum reliability,bulk power system reliability assessment based on sensitivity analysis are discussed.And a prospect on the research in this field is presented in the end.

Abstract:Renewable energy resources are becoming the dominating element in power systems. Along with de-carbonization, they transform power systems into a more distributed, autonomous, bottom-up style one. We speak of Smart Grid and Microgrid when distributed energy resources take over. While being a means to improve technical and financial efficiency, planning, operations, and carbon footprint, it is these new technologies that also introduce new challenges. Reliability is one of them, deserving a new way of describing and assessing system and component reliability. This paper introduces a new reliability framework that covers these new elements in modern power systems. It can be seen that reliability assessment of modern power systems also requires introducing local reliability concepts as well as incorporating different electro-magnetic/mechanical stability issues.

Abstract:This study provides a systematic overview of the advent and evolution of reliability systems engineering (RSE) in China, and the latest RSE development, that is, model-based RSE (MBRSE), is emphatically introduced. The establishment of the system architecture and conceptual models of MBRSE is first described. The fundamental theory and methodology of MBRSE are then elaborated, with a V-model as the core of this approach. The development of various MBRSE platforms and the effectiveness of their implementation over the past 30 years are presented. The prospective trends in the development of RSE in China are outlined.

Abstract:The necessity for establishing reliability test system for generation and transmission system in China is mentioned. Two reliability test systems proposed by IEEE which are entitled IEEE-RTS 79 and IEEE-RTS 96 are summarized. A new reliability test system based on national conditions of China proposed by Tsinghua University for composite generation and transmission system (TH-RTS 2000) is presented. TH-RTS 2000 has been tested by software TH-BESREP 2000 developed by Tsinghua University, and results show that TH-RTS 2000 is suitable for power industry in China.

Abstract:In many important energy conversion systems, the power electronic converters are proven to have high failure rates. At the same time, the failures of the power electronics systems are becoming more and more unacceptable because of the high cost of failures and booming power capacity. As a consequence, an appropriate assessment of reliability performance for the power electronics is a crucial and emerging need, because it is the essential information for the design improvements as well as for the extension of converter lifetime, and reduction of the cost-of-energy. Unfortunately, there is still lack of suitable and cost-effective tools for the reliability assessment in power electronics. In this paper, an advanced design tool structure, which can acquire various reliability metrics of the power converters, is proposed. The proposed reliability design tool is based on the failure mechanisms in the critical components of the power electronics system, and the mission profiles in the converter applications are also taken into account. Finally, the potential methodologies, challenges and technology trends involved in this tool structure are also discussed.

Abstract:High wind power penetration can have significant impact on the reliability performance of a power system due to the random nature of wind speed. The impact of wind power penetration on system reliability is critical for system planning and operation. In this paper, the system reliability has been studied considering the impact of wind farms. The universal generating function technique has been used to model the performance of wind generating units and wind farm. Abstract:With the deregulation of power industry, power system reliability becomes a critical problem. The impact of deregulation on system reliability is one of the concerns after the unbundling of the traditional integrated power companies. In this paper, the reliability situations in restructuring China power industry are introduced. Some reliability data is provided. The data shows that the reliability level has increased significantly in the past two decades. More and more measures are applied to guarantee the reliability operation in the restructured power systems. In the end, the reliability issues and challenges in Chinese power industry are discussed.

Abstract:The investigation shows that power semiconductor devices are the most fragile components of power electronic systems.Improving the reliability of power devices is the basis of a reliable power electronic system, and in recent years, many studies have focused on power device reliability.This paper describes the current state of the art in reliability research for power semiconductor devices, mainly includes failure mechanisms,condition monitoring, lifetime evaluation and active thermal control.Among them,condition monitoring technology are classified and summarized by the failure mechanism and the change rules of characteristic quantities; The method of lifetime estimation isillustrated from the practical point of view;Methods of active thermal control are classified and summarized from the two ideas of reducing loss and loss compensation which are refined by the principle of realization. At last, this paper draws the existing problems and challenges of power devices reliability studies.

Abstract:Different from traditional AC distribution network,DC distribution network is mainly made up of a lot of power electronic devices.To assess reliability of MV DC distribution,reliability models of VSC converter,DC transformer and DC circuit breaker were established to analyze device and equipment level redundancy effects on DC distribution system reliability and difference between effects of function failure and insulation failure on DC distribution system reliability.Taking double side power supply DC distribution system for example,influencing factors are quantitatively analyzed and calculated.Comparison results show that equipment level redundancy is better than device level redundancy in improving system reliability,and difference between function failure and insulation failure mainly influences on reliability calculation of DC distribution system equipped with less DC circuit breakers.
