Abstract:In this article, we study a class of problems where the sum of truncated convex functions is minimized. In statistical applications, they are commonly encountered when ℓ0-penalized models are fitted and usually lead to NP-Hard non-convex optimization problems. In this article, we propose a general algorithm for the global minimizer in low-dimensional settings. We also extend the algorithm to high-dimensional settings, where an approximate solution can be found efficiently. We introduce several applications where the sum of truncated convex functions is used, compare our proposed algorithm with other existing algorithms in simulation studies, and show its utility in edge-preserving image restoration on real data.

On Distributed Computation of the Minimum Triangle Edge Transversal

Abstract:The distance of a graph from being triangle-free is a fundamental graph parameter, counting the number of edges that need to be removed from a graph in order for it to become triangle-free. Its corresponding computational problem is the classic minimum triangle edge transversal problem, and its normalized value is the baseline for triangle-freeness testing algorithms. While triangle-freeness testing has been successfully studied in the distributed setting, computing the distance itself in a distributed setting is unknown, to the best of our knowledge, despite being well-studied in the centralized setting. This work addresses the computation of the minimum triangle edge transversal in distributed networks. We show with a simple warm-up construction that this is a global task, requiring $\Omega(D)$ rounds even in the $\mathsf{LOCAL}$ model with unbounded messages, where $D$ is the diameter of the network. However, we show that approximating this value can be done much faster. A $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation can be obtained in $\text{poly}\log{n}$ rounds, where $n$ is the size of the network graph. Moreover, faster approximations can be obtained, at the cost of increasing the approximation factor to roughly 3, by a reduction to the minimum hypergraph vertex cover problem. With a time overhead of the maximum degree $\Delta$, this can also be applied to the $\mathsf{CONGEST}$ model, in which messages are bounded. Our key technical contribution is proving that computing an exact solution is ``as hard as it gets'' in $\mathsf{CONGEST}$, requiring a near-quadratic number of rounds. Because this problem is an edge selection problem, as opposed to previous lower bounds that were for node selection problems, major challenges arise in constructing the lower bound, requiring us to develop novel ingredients.

Abstract:The optimization problem concerning the determination of the minimizer for the sum of convex functions holds significant importance in the realm of distributed and decentralized optimization. In scenarios where full knowledge of the functions is not available, limiting information to individual minimizers and convexity parameters -- either due to privacy concerns or the nature of solution analysis -- necessitates an exploration of the region encompassing potential minimizers based solely on these known quantities. The characterization of this region becomes notably intricate when dealing with multivariate strongly convex functions compared to the univariate case. This paper contributes outer and inner approximations for the region harboring the minimizer of the sum of two strongly convex functions, given a constraint on the norm of the gradient at the minimizer of the sum. Notably, we explicitly delineate the boundaries and interiors of both the outer and inner approximations. Intriguingly, the boundaries as well as the interiors turn out to be identical. Furthermore, we establish that the boundary of the region containing potential minimizers aligns with that of the outer and inner approximations.

Abstract:We determine the minimal density of triangles in a tripartite graph with prescribed edge densities. This extends a previous result of Bondy, Shen, Thomassé and Thomassen characterizing those edge densities guaranteeing the existence of a triangle in a tripartite graph. To be precise we show that a suitably weighted copy of the graph formed by deleting a certain 9-cycle from $K_{3,3,3}$ has minimal triangle density among all weighted tripartite graphs with prescribed edge densities.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method to rapidly and effectively calculate the maximal and minimal distances between a pair of satellites in which the leader is in an elliptic orbit. The principal idea of this method is simplifying the nonlinear squared distance function into a Taylor series with limited orders and further fitting the trigonometric functions in the derivative function of the simplified squared distance by piece-wise quadratic polynomials. By solving the zero-crossing points of the fitted quadratic curve, the critical points of the original nonlinear distance function are approximately determined. It turns out that the accuracy of the obtained solutions of the extreme distances depends on the number of intervals of the polynomial fitting. The bigger the number of intervals is, the better the accuracy. However, it is also noticed that the number of intervals is not necessary too big. For real applications a small value (e.g. 8) may be enough for the number of intervals. Besides, the method is apparently more effective for the small eccentricity cases. Finally, some simulations are further carried out to demonstrate the performances of this new method.
On the Set of Possible Minimizers of a Sum of Convex Functions

Abstract:Consider a sum of convex functions, where the only information known about each individual summand is the location of a minimizer. In this work, we give an exact characterization of the set of possible minimizers of the sum. Our results cover several types of assumptions on the summands, such as smoothness or strong convexity. Our main tool is the use of necessary and sufficient conditions for interpolating the considered function classes, which leads to shorter and more direct proofs in comparison with previous work. We also address the setting where each summand minimizer is assumed to lie in a unit ball, and prove a tight bound on the norm of any minimizer of the sum.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a geometrical inequality which states that for any four points on a hemisphere with the unit radius, the largest sum of distances between the points is 4+4*sqrt(2). In our method, we have constructed a rectangular neighborhood of the local maximum point in the feasible set, which size is explicitly determined, and proved that (1): the objective function is bounded by a quadratic polynomial which takes the local maximum point as the unique critical point in the neighborhood, and (2): the rest part of the feasible set can be partitioned into a finite union of a large number of very small cubes so that on each small cube the conjecture can be verified by estimating the objective function with exact numerical computation.
Differentiable Geodesic Distance for Intrinsic Minimization on Triangle Meshes

Abstract:Computing intrinsic distances on discrete surfaces is at the heart of many minimization problems in geometry processing and beyond. Solving these problems is extremely challenging as it demands the computation of on-surface distances along with their derivatives. We present a novel approach for intrinsic minimization of distance-based objectives defined on triangle meshes. Using a variational formulation of shortest-path geodesics, we compute first and second-order distance derivatives based on the implicit function theorem, thus opening the door to efficient Newton-type minimization solvers. We demonstrate our differentiable geodesic distance framework on a wide range of examples, including geodesic networks and membranes on surfaces of arbitrary genus, two-way coupling between hosting surface and embedded system, differentiable geodesic Voronoi diagrams, and efficient computation of Karcher means on complex shapes. Our analysis shows that second-order descent methods based on our differentiable geodesics outperform existing first-order and quasi-Newton methods by large margins.

Minimizing the stabbing number of matchings, trees, and triangulations

Abstract:The (axis-parallel) stabbing number of a given set of line segments is the maximum number of segments that can be intersected by any one (axis-parallel) line. This paper deals with finding perfect matchings, spanning trees, or triangulations of minimum stabbing number for a given set of points. The complexity of these problems has been a long-standing open question; in fact, it is one of the original 30 outstanding open problems in computational geometry on the list by Demaine, Mitchell, and O'Rourke. The answer we provide is negative for a number of minimum stabbing problems by showing them NP-hard by means of a general proof technique. It implies non-trivial lower bounds on the approximability. On the positive side we propose a cut-based integer programming formulation for minimizing the stabbing number of matchings and spanning trees. We obtain lower bounds (in polynomial time) from the corresponding linear programming relaxations, and show that an optimal fractional solution always contains an edge of at least constant weight. This result constitutes a crucial step towards a constant-factor approximation via an iterated rounding scheme. In computational experiments we demonstrate that our approach allows for actually solving problems with up to several hundred points optimally or near-optimally.

Shortest Total Distance Traveled Among Curves , Surfaces and Lagrange Multipliers

Abstract:This paper was inspired by students at Guangzhou University in 2014, the problems are variations from those described in [1]. We seek the shortest total distance from curve 1 to curve 2, curve 2 to curve 3 and curve 3 back to curve 1. In 3D, we want to nd the shortest total distance between surface 1 and surface 2, surface 2 and surface 3, surface 3 and surface 4, and nally surface 4 and surface 1. We assume curves and surfaces are not intersecting. We start with the simplest case for circles in 2D and we link to higher dimensions through the Lagrange multipliers method. 1 Introduction In [1], we considered three given disjoint curves, C1; C2 and C3 respectively in the plane, and we found the minimum total (squared) distance from C1 to C2 and C1 to C3:We also worked on four non-intersecting convex surfaces S1; S2; S3 and S4 in R and we found the the minimum total (squared) distance from S1 to S2; S1 to S3; and S1 to S4: In this paper, we discuss the following problems which were raised during the rst authors research visit at Guangzhou University during February and April of 2014. Given three disjoint curves, C1; C2 and C3 respectively in R; we need to nd the minimum total distance from C1 to C2; C2 to C3 and C3 to C1: Next, we consider four disjoint convex surfaces S1; S2; S3 and S4 and we shall nd the minimum total distance from S1 to S2; S2 to S3; S3 to S4 and S4 to S1: We note that the total squared distance is obviously di¤erent from the exact total distance. However, in this paper, we do not distinguish the di¤erences between these two when we are proving theorems. We will only use true total distance, kx yk ; for x and y in R or R in actual computations with Maple. For the vertices of a given triangle, Fermat asks for a fourth point such that the sum of its Euclidean distances to the three given points is minimized. Many authors present geometric approaches to the Fermat-Torricelli problem. We solve the problem by analytic and geometrical method and extend it to the sphere. we also characterize the median point P on the general regular surface.

Abstract:The arc distance between two points on a circle is their geodesic distance along the circle. We study the sum of the (n2) arc distances determined by n points on a circle, which is a useful measure of the evenness of scales and rhythms in music theory. We characterize the configurations with the maximum sum of arc distances by a balanced condition: for each line that goes through the circle center and touches no point, the numbers of points on each side of the line differ by at most one. When the points are restricted to lattice positions on a circle, we show that Toussaint's snap heuristic finds an optimal configuration. We derive closed-form formulas for the maximum sum of arc distances when the points are either allowed to move continuously on the circle or restricted to lattice positions. We also present a linear-time algorithm for computing the sum of arc distances when the points are presorted by the polar coordinates.

Abstract:Computing a Euclidean minimum spanning tree of a set of points is a seminal problem in computational geometry and geometric graph theory. We combine it with another classical problem in graph drawing, namely computing a monotone geometric representation of a given graph. More formally, given a finite set $S$ of points in the plane and a finite set $\cal D$ of directions, a geometric spanning tree $T$ with vertex set $S$ is ${\cal D}$-monotone if, for every pair $\{u,v\}$ of vertices of $T$, there exists a direction $d \in \cal D$ for which the unique path from $u$ to $v$ in $T$ is monotone with respect to $d$. We provide a characterization of ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning trees. Based on it, we show that a ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree of minimum length can be computed in polynomial time if the number $k=|{\cal D}|$ of directions is fixed, both when (i) the set ${\cal D}$ of directions is prescribed and when (ii) the objective is to find a minimum-length ${\cal D}$-monotone spanning tree over all sets ${\cal D}$ of $k$ directions. For $k = 2$, we describe algorithms that are much faster than those for the general case. Furthermore, in contrast to the classical Euclidean minimum spanning tree, whose vertex degree is at most six, we show that for every even integer $k$, there exists a point set $S_k$ and a set $\cal D$ of $k$ directions such that any minimum-length $\cal D$-monotone spanning tree of $S_k$ has maximum vertex degree $2k$.

How to Compute a Triangle with Prescribed Lengths of Its Internal Angle Bisectors

Abstract:In 1994 P. Mironescu and L. Panaitopol published a non-constructive proof that any three given positive real numbers are the lengths of the internal angle bisectors of a triangle which is unique up to isometries. In the present paper it will be shown that this result can be obtained also by a constructive proof which in addition leads to an efficient method for computing the lengths of the sides of the triangle in question. 1. Preliminaries Let 〈A,B,C〉 be a triangle, a = |−−→ BC|, b = |−→ CA|, c = |−−→ AB| the lengths of its sides, and α = ∠(CAB), β = ∠(ABC), γ = ∠(BCA) its angles. The lengths a, b, c are positive real numbers satisfying the triangle inequalities a < b+ c, b < c+ a, c < a+ b. Clustering with Few Disks to Minimize the Sum of Radii

Abstract:Given a set of $n$ points in the Euclidean plane, the $k$-MinSumRadius problem asks to cover this point set using $k$ disks with the objective of minimizing the sum of the radii of the disks. After a long line of research on related problems, it was finally discovered that this problem admits a polynomial time algorithm [GKKPV~'12]; however, the running time of this algorithm is $O(n^{881})$, and its relevance is thereby mostly of theoretical nature. A practically and structurally interesting special case of the $k$-MinSumRadius problem is that of small $k$. For the $2$-MinSumRadius problem, a near-quadratic time algorithm with expected running time $O(n^2 \log^2 n \log^2 \log n)$ was given over 30 years ago [Eppstein~'92]. We present the first improvement of this result, namely, a near-linear time algorithm to compute the $2$-MinSumRadius that runs in expected $O(n \log^2 n \log^2 \log n)$ time. We generalize this result to any constant dimension $d$, for which we give an $O(n^{2-1/(\lceil d/2\rceil + 1) + \varepsilon})$ time algorithm. Additionally, we give a near-quadratic time algorithm for $3$-MinSumRadius in the plane that runs in expected $O(n^2 \log^2 n \log^2 \log n)$ time. All of these algorithms rely on insights that uncover a surprisingly simple structure of optimal solutions: we can specify a linear number of lines out of which one separates one of the clusters from the remaining clusters in an optimal solution.
