Abstract:Megahertz-rate hydroxyl radical planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF) was demonstrated in a hydrogen/air rotating detonation combustor for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. A custom injection-seeded optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by the 355 nm output of a high-energy burst-mode laser produced narrowband pulses near 284 nm for OH excitation. The system generated sequences of more than 150 ultraviolet pulses with 400 µJ/pulse at 1 MHz and 150 µJ/pulse at 2 MHz. The order of magnitude improvement in the repetition rate over prior OH-PLIF measurements and in the number of pulses over previous megahertz burst-mode OPOs enables spatiotemporal analysis of complex detonation combustion dynamics.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide (CO) can be endogenously produced in mammalian cells and regarded as an essential cell signaling molecule in the body. And it is closely related with a range of physiological and pathological processes. Although some fluorescence probes for tracking CO are reported, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence probe for CO with a large Stokes shift remains scarce. Herein, a NIR fluorescence probe named DCX-CO is designed and synthesized. In the probe, the allyl formate group is chosen as recognizing moiety and benzopyranonitrile-xanthene-based dye is selected as fluorophore. Upon the addition of CO, the probe shows NIR emission at 762 nm with a large Stokes shift (164 nm). Moreover, the probe displays high sensitivity for CO with 16-fold fluorescence enhancement and excellent selectivity to CO over other potential interference in biological sample. Based on the low cytotoxicity, the probe can be used for the detection of exogenous and endogenous CO in HepG2 cells and HCT116 cells. In addition, taking advantage of NIR emission with a large Stokes shift, DCX-CO is applied for monitoring CO in vivo.

Abstract:As a kind of toxic gas, carbon monoxide (CO) can hinder uptake of oxygen in humans. However, more and more studies have shown that CO is an important gaseous messenger in the body and playing an indispensable role in intracellular signaling pathways. So, it is necessary to develop an analytical method to study CO in living organisms. Although there are many CO-responsive probes, most of them have the disadvantages of a small Stokes shift or short emission wavelength. In order to address the above issue, a novel probe (FDX-CO) with a large Stokes shift (190 nm) and long emission wavelength (770 nm) was firstly synthesized to detect CO. The probe shows high sensitivity and superior selectivity toward CO. Moreover, the probe was successfully used for visualizing exogenous and endogenous CO in cells by fluorescence imaging, 3D quantification analysis and flow cytometric analysis. More importantly, FDX-CO could excellently detect CO in mice, which suggests that this probe has the potential ability to image CO in vivo. This probe can be viewed as a useful tool in the research of CO.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide (CO) is an important gas signaling molecule and has been widely involved in regulating important life processes. Effective monitoring of CO in living systems is critical. Combined with the accuracy of ratio detection and the advantages of two-photon imaging, a simple ratiometric two-photon fluorescent probe RTFP was rationally designed and synthesized using 7-(diethylamino)-4-hydroxycoumarin as a two-photon fluorophore and allyl carbonate as the reactive unit. Probe RTFP exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards CO, and was successfully applied to image endogenous CO in living cells and zebrafish.

Abstract:Ultrasensitive detection of methane, isotopic carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, acetylene and ethylene is performed in the spectral range 2.5 - 5 \mu m using intracavity spectroscopy in broadband optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). The OPOs were operated near degeneracy and synchronously pumped either by a mode-locked erbium (1560 nm) or thulium (2050 nm) fiber laser. A large instantaneous bandwidth of up to 800 cm$^{-1}$ allows for simultaneous detection of several gases. We observe an effective path length enhancement due to coherent interaction inside the OPO cavity and achieve part-per-billion sensitivity levels. The measured spectral shapes are in good agreement with a model that takes into account group delay dispersion across the broad OPO frequency band.

Abstract:There are two molecular adsorption states of CO in the system. One is , with lower C - O frequency, and the other is , with higher C - O frequency. The latter is similar to that on a clean surface. The two states of CO are occupied sequentially during the exposure to CO. The C - O stretch frequency of both states shifts to a higher value with the exposure to CO and to a lower value with higher Cs precoverage. The electronic structure of the molecule is different from that of the molecule and is of the same character as CO in a tilted mode.

Abstract:A photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS)-based carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensor with a high-power laser and an enhanced gas absorption was demonstrated. The light source was a distributed feedback (DFB), continuous wave (CW) diode laser with a high output power of ~8 mW to give a strong excitation. The target gas received optical absorption enhanced two times by using a right-angle prism reflecting the laser beam. In order to reduce the noise from the background, wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) and second-harmonic detection techniques were used. The modulation frequency and modulation depth were optimized theoretically and experimentally. Water vapor was added in the PAS sensor system to increase the vibrational–translational (V–T) relaxation rate of the CO molecule, which resulted in an ~8 times signal enhancement compared with the using of a dry CO/N2 gas mixture. The amplitude of the 2f signal had a 1.52-fold improvement compared to the one with only one time absorption. The experimental results showed that such a sensor had an excellent linear response to the optical power and gas concentration. At 1 s integration time, a minimum detection limit (MDL) for CO detection of 9.8 ppm was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor system was evaluated with an Allan deviation analysis. When the integration time was 1100 s, the MDL improved to be 530 ppb. The detection performance of such a PAS-based CO sensor can be further improved when a laser with a higher output power and increasing optical absorption times is used.

Abstract:To achieve fluorescence detection and imaging of CO in the NIR‐II region, orthogonal ratiometric responsive nanoparticles (NP‐Pd) are synthesized. The fluorescence operating band in the NIR‐II region endows NP‐Pd with excellent tissue penetration, and ratiometric imaging makes NP‐Pd more resistant to interference in physiological environments. This provides a more precise method to explore human CO‐related diseases. Carbon monoxide (CO) functions as a significant endogenous cell signaling molecule and is strongly associated with many physiological and pathological processes. However, conventional fluorescence imaging in the visible and near‐infrared (NIR) I regions suffers autofluorescence background and photon scattering, hindering the accurate detection of CO in vivo. In addition, the complexity of physiological environments leads to fluctuating fluorescence emission. To solve these problems, herein, the NIR‐II fluorescent nanoprobe NP‐Pd for in vivo ratiometric bioimaging of CO is developed. In the presence of CO, NP‐Pd exhibits responsive enhancement in absorption at 808 nm, which amplifies the fluorescence signal of down‐conversion nanoparticles (DCNP) at 1060 nm under 808 nm excitation, while the fluorescence signal of DCNP at 1525 nm under 980 nm excitation remains unchanged and serves as an internal standard. Through this orthogonally ratiometric fluorescence strategy, accurate CO bioimaging and precise diagnosis of acute liver injury diseases are achieved in the mouse model experiments, providing a novel tool for the in vivo detection of CO‐related diseases.

Nanosecond resolved ro-vibrational excitation of CO$_2$

Abstract:We report first ns-resolved absorption measurements of the ro-vibrational excitation of CO$_2$. The high temporal resolution of 8 ns is made possible by a fast detector (rise-time 5 ns), sensitive in the mid-infrared region. The resolution is achieved by a slow temperature scan of a quantum cascade laser and a segmented data capturing scheme. A repetitively pulsed ns discharge in 10% CO$_2$ + 90% He at 150 mbar and a repetition rate of 2 kHz is investigated. The evolution of the population densities of the different vibration modes as well as the associated vibrational and rotational temperatures within the discharge pulse of only 150 ns length are simultaneously determined and provide valuable insight into the CO$_2$ excitation dynamics. A preferential excitation in the asymmetric vibrational mode is observed in the discharge phase shortly after the breakdown.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy offers unparalleled sensitivity for the detection of trace gases, solids and liquids, which is based on the existence of strong telltale vibrational bands in this part of the spectrum. It was shown more than a decade ago that a dual-comb Fourier spectroscopy could provide superior spectral coverage combined with high resolution and extremely fast data acquisition. Capabilities of this method were limited because of difficulty of producing twins of mutually coherent frequency combs in the mid- IR. Here we report a phase-coherent and broadband dual-comb system that is based on a pair of subharmonic (frequency-divide-by-two) optical parametric oscillators, pumped in turn by two phase-locked thulium fiber lasers at 2-micron wavelength. We demonstrate simultaneous detection of multiple molecular species in the whole band of 3.2-5.3 microns (frequency span 1200 cm^{-1}) augmented by the pump laser band of 1.85-2 microns (span 400 cm^{-1}), with spectral resolution 0.01-0.07 cm^{-1} and acquisition speed of up to 160,000 resolution elements in few seconds.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates scanned-wavelength tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with a scan rate up to 2 MHz using a distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser. The 2.3-µm DFB laser was used to probe the R(11) line present in the first overtone band of carbon monoxide (CO). Detailed tuning characteristics of the DFB laser were investigated over a wide range of scan rates from 20 kHz to 2 MHz. The tuning range was found to decrease exponentially with the scan rate below 1 MHz, and then slightly decrease up to 2 MHz. By applying a sinusoidal waveform to the injection current, the phase shift (ϕ) between intensity and frequency modulations was measured to be 1.11π at the scan rate of 20 kHz, which increases to 1.61π at 2 MHz. Due to the significant variation of ϕ with the scan rate, the position of the target absorption profile on the transmitted laser intensity curve must be adjusted accordingly based on the simultaneously recorded etalon signal. All the measurements obtained at different scan rates show excellent consistency in the CO spectrum. This study reveals that MHz-rate scanned-wavelength direct absorption spectroscopy can be developed for ultrafast gas sensing that may find promising applications in many fields.

Abstract:A set of phosphorescent materials were evaluated using a new macro-imager based on fast time-stamping Tpx3Cam camera with phosphorescent lifetime imaging (PLIM) capabilities. The near-infrared emitting O2-sensitive dye PtBP was embedded in several polymers having different permeability for O2 and applied as solid-state coatings on polyester film support. These sensor materials were placed on a temperature-controlled stage of the imager and imaged under pulsed excitation with a 627 nm LED. The resulting PLIM images showed good uniformity, accuracy and contrast of measured lifetime values for the different phosphorescent materials, and the anticipated lifetime changes with altered temperature or oxygenation conditions, proving the dynamic mechanism of quenching by O2. By imaging the coatings with decreasing dye concentration, stability and limits of sensitivity of the PLIM mode were determined and compared with intensity-based imaging. Several commercial O2 sensors were also imaged and compared with the hand-made sensors, while lifetime measurements on the new imager were compared with those performed on the confocal TCSPC-PLIM microscope.
Ultra-high-speed PLIF imaging for simultaneous visualization of multiple species in turbulent flames

Abstract:In order to obtain more detailed characteristics and information in highly turbulent flames, for a better understanding of the transient behavior of eddies in such flames, a measurement technique with sufficient temporal resolution is requested. However, the probing of species distributions relevant in combustion (e.g. OH, CH2O) with ultra-high-speed laser diagnostics still remains a challenge. Nd:YAG clusters commercially available can generate only 4-8 pulses, although with high laser energy. Systems based on a diode-pumped solid-state Nd:YAG laser combined with a dye laser produce only about 100 μJ pulse energy at ultra-high repetition rates (≥50 kHz). Even more comprehensive information on the flame structure can be gained if simultaneous recording of multi-species is performed. In the present work, the development of the first ultra-high-speed diagnostic technique capable of simultaneous probing of hydroxyl radicals and formaldehyde distributions at a repetition rate of 50 kHz is outlined. This has been achieved by employing a burst laser pumped optical parametric oscillator system for the simultaneous detection of CH2O excited at 355 nm and OH-radicals excited at 283 nm, where the interference of scattering laser light can be avoided. The applicability of the proposed technique was demonstrated in a highly turbulent jet flame. Moreover, the presented improvement in terms of the number of consecutive images recorded with ultra-high-speed planar laser induced fluorescence imaging is significant. Due to the high temporal resolution, the movement of CH2O pocket enclosed by OH at the flame tip can be clearly captured. The transport velocity of the CH2O pocket was calculated and found to be in good agreement with previous LDV results.

Abstract:We have developed a rapid quartz enhanced spectrophone for carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement, in which the laser wavelength was tightly locked to a CO2 absorption line and a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) operating at 12.5 kHz was employed. The intrinsic QTF oscillation-limited response time, as well as the optimal feedback interval, was experimentally investigated. By tightly locking the laser to the R(16) transition of CO2, we obtained a stable laser operation with its center wavelength variation kept within 0.0002 cm−1, merely three times the laser linewidth. The reported CO2 sensor achieved a detection limit of 7 ppm, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient (NNEA) of 4.7 × 10−9 W·cm−1·Hz−1/2, at a response time of 0.5 s. The detection limit can be further improved to 0.45 ppm at an integration time of 270 s, illustrating a good system stability. This spectrophone enables the realization of compact and fast-response gas sensors for many scenarios, where CO2 concentration from sub-ppm to hundreds of thousands of ppm is expected.

Four-dimensional laser absorption cinematography of species and temperature dynamics at 2 kHz in reacting flows

Abstract:A four-dimensional (4D) mid-infrared laser absorption imaging technique has been developed and demonstrated for quantitative, time-resolved, volumetric measurements of temperature and species concentration in dynamic combustion flows. This technique employs a dual high-speed infrared camera setup to capture turnable radiation from a quantum cascade laser near 4.85 µm to resolve rovibrational absorption transitions of carbon monoxide at two orthogonal projection angles. The laser is modulated with a customized waveform to adaptively resolve two target transitions with an increased density of data samples in proximity to the transition peaks, therefore ensuring accurate and quantitative spectral interpretation while minimizing the required frame rate. A 3D masked Tikhonov regularized inversion was performed to reconstruct spectrally resolved absorbance at every grid point of each frame, which enables subsequent interpretation of local gas properties in time. These methods are applied to achieve quantitative 4D cinematography of temperature and carbon monoxide in a propagating C2H4/O2 flame with a spatial pixel resolution of ∼70 µm and a temporal resolution of 2 kHz.

Abstract:An experimental study of a rapidly tuning miniature transversely excited atmospheric-pressure CO2 laser is reported. To rapidly shift laser wavelengths over selected transitions in the 9-11 microm wavelength region, we have utilized a high-frequency stepping motor and a diffraction grating. The laser is highly automated with a monolithic microprocessor controlled laser line selection. For the achievement of stable laser output, a system of laser excitation with a voltage of 10 kV, providing effective surface corona preionization and allowing one to work at various gas pressures, is utilized. Laser operation at 59 emission lines of the CO2 molecule rotational transition is obtained and at 51 lines, the pulse energy of laser radiation exceeds 30 mJ. The system can be tuned between two different rotational lines spanning the wavelength range from 9.2 to 10.8 microm within 10 ms.
