Abstract:With the development of next generation artificial intelligence, the interplay between knowledge-based approaches and machine learning approaches is gaining momentum. This trend drives the researchers to pay attention to possible and novel developments in relevant areas, either based on their theoretical foundations or based on their efficient applications. This special issue collects the newly developed works from logic, argumentation and artificial intelligence, to stimulate possible outcomes from their interactions. This volume includes 14 papers selected from 25 submissions accepted to the 2020 International Conferences on Logic and Artificial Intelligence at Zhejiang University (ZJULogAI). ZJULogAI was jointly organized by the University of Luxembourg and Zhejiang University as a three-day digital online event. Abstract:Knowledge Representation and Reasoning and Machine Learning are two important fields in AI. Nonmonotonic logic programming (NMLP) and Answer Set Programming (ASP) provide formal languages for representing and reasoning with commonsense knowledge and realize declarative problem solving in AI. On the other side, Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) realizes Machine Learning in logic programming, which provides a formal background to inductive learning and the techniques have been applied to the fields of relational learning and data mining. Generally speaking, NMLP and ASP realize nonmonotonic reasoning while lack the ability of learning. By contrast, ILP realizes inductive learning while most techniques have been developed under the classical monotonic logic. With this background, some researchers attempt to combine techniques in the context of nonmonotonic ILP. Such combination will introduce a learning mechanism to programs and would exploit new applications on the NMLP side, while on the ILP side it will extend the representation language and enable us to use existing solvers. Cross-fertilization between learning and nonmonotonic reasoning can also occur in such as the use of answer set solvers for ILP, speed-up learning while running answer set solvers, learning action theories, learning transition rules in dynamical systems, abductive learning, learning biological networks with inhibition, and applications involving default and negation. This workshop is the first attempt to provide an open forum for the identification of problems and discussion of possible collaborations among researchers with complementary expertise. The workshop was held on September 15th of 2013 in Corunna, Spain. This post-proceedings contains five technical papers (out of six accepted papers) and the abstract of the invited talk by Luc De Raedt.

Abstract:This special issue cover the seventh and last conference of the CL&C series, started in 2006 in San Servolo. Topics are the computational content of logics between intuitionistic logic and classical logic, through normalization, and a new topic, cyclic proofs and the complexity of checking the correctness of a cyclic proof. Accepted papers include an empirical comparison of time consumption of different normalization algorithms, and new reductions sets for several extensions of intuitionistic logic having the Herbrand disjunction property. Another paper provides a reduction set for admissible rules for intuitionistic logic. A paper describes a subset of cyclic proofs having a polynomial-time algorithm checking correctness.

Abstract:The year 2012 has witnessed worldwide celebrations of Alan Turing’s 100th birthday. A great number of conferences and workshops were organized by logicians, computer scientists and researchers in AI, showing the continued flourishing of computer science, and the fruitful interfaces between logic and computer science. Logic is no longer just the concept that Frege had about one hundred years ago, let alone that of Aristotle twenty centuries before. One of the prominent features of contemporary logic is its interdisciplinary character, connecting across mathematics, philosophy, modern computer science, and even the cognitive and social sciences. China is no exception. This special issue explores interfaces of logic with AI and other disciplines, and it attempts to give a bird’s eye view of the developing landscape of logic and AI in China. Our contributors come from computer science, AI, philosophy and linguistics, united by their interest in using formal logical tools and notions to deal with substantial problems in their fields. We are aware that AI is a vast area, and that the limitations of space in a volume like this may provide a somewhat incomplete or biased view. Still we hope that the six papers selected here illustrate the concerns and curiosity driving Chinese researchers, on topics shared with our colleagues around the world. One of the active research areas in AI is planning under uncertainty, with incomplete knowledge, where a well-established logical framework is the action language of Son and Baral (Son and Baral 2001). Abstract:Formal Argumentation is emerging as a key reasoning paradigm building bridges among knowledge representation and reasoning in artificial intelligence, informal argumentation in philosophy and linguistics, legal and ethical argumentation, mathematical and logical reasoning, and graph-theoretic reasoning. It aims to capture diverse kinds of reasoning and dialogue activities in the presence of uncertainty and conflicting information in a formal and intuitive way, with potential applications ranging from argumentation mining, via LegalTech and machine ethics, to therapy in clinical psychology. The turning point for the modern stage of formal argumentation theory, much similar to the introduction of possible worlds semantics for the theory of modality, is the framework and language of Dung's abstract argumentation theory introduced in 1995. This means that nothing could remain the same as before 1995 - it should be a focal point of reference for any study of argumentation, even if it is critical about it. Now, in modal logic, the introduction of the possible worlds semantics has led to a complete paradigm shift, both in tools and new subjects of studies. This is still not fully true for what is going on in argumentation theory. The Dagstuhl workshop led to the first volume of a handbook series in formal argumentation, reflecting the new stage of the development of argumentation theory.

Abstract:This special issue is situated at the interface between Logic and the Foundations of Physics. This interface, though not as active as the logical foundations of mathematics, has long existed—with highlights such as “quantum logic”, or studies of the general logical structure of physical theories. In recent years, more themes have come to the fore, and we may be witnessing a revival. The papers presented here emanate from a symposium held at the University of Utrecht in January 2008 with the aim of charting established as well as new connections between the two fields. One of the main questions discussedwaswhether and howmodern techniques coming from logic, computer science and information theory might be combined with state-of-the-art insights in the philosophy of physics to gain a better understanding of the main foundational issues and open problems in modern physics. Abstract:Logic programming has long being advocated for legal reasoning, and several approaches have been put forward relying upon explicit representation of the law in logic programming terms. In this position paper we focus on the PROLEG logic-programming-based framework for formalizing and reasoning with Japanese presupposed ultimate fact theory. Specifically, we examine challenges and opportunities in leveraging deep learning techniques for improving legal reasoning using PROLEG identifying four distinct options ranging from enhancing fact extraction using deep learning to end-to-end solutions for reasoning with textual legal descriptions. We assess advantages and limitations of each option, considering their technical feasibility, interpretability, and alignment with the needs of legal practitioners and decision-makers. We believe that our analysis can serve as a guideline for developers aiming to build effective decision-support systems for the legal domain, while fostering a deeper understanding of challenges and potential advancements by neuro-symbolic approaches in legal applications.

Theory and Practice of Logic Programming

Abstract:Abstract Multi-core and highly connected architectures have become ubiquitous, and this has brought renewed interest in language-based approaches to the exploitation of parallelism. Since its inception, logic programming has been recognized as a programming paradigm with great potential for automated exploitation of parallelism. The comprehensive survey of the first twenty years of research in parallel logic programming, published in 2001, has served since as a fundamental reference to researchers and developers. The contents are quite valid today, but at the same time the field has continued evolving at a fast pace in the years that have followed. Many of these achievements and ongoing research have been driven by the rapid pace of technological innovation, that has led to advances such as very large clusters, the wide diffusion of multi-core processors, the game-changing role of general-purpose graphic processing units, and the ubiquitous adoption of cloud computing. This has been paralleled by significant advances within logic programming, such as tabling, more powerful static analysis and verification, the rapid growth of Answer Set Programming, and in general, more mature implementations and systems. This survey provides a review of the research in parallel logic programming covering the period since 2001, thus providing a natural continuation of the previous survey. In order to keep the survey self-contained, it restricts its attention to parallelization of the major logic programming languages (Prolog, Datalog, Answer Set Programming) and with an emphasis on automated parallelization and preservation of the sequential observable semantics of such languages. The goal of the survey is to serve not only as a reference for researchers and developers of logic programming systems but also as engaging reading for anyone interested in logic and as a useful source for researchers in parallel systems outside logic programming.

Abstract:Knowledge Representation and Reasoning is a central, longstanding, and active area of Artificial Intelligence. Over the years it has evolved significantly; more recently it has been challenged and complemented by research in areas such as machine learning and reasoning under uncertainty. In July 2022 a Dagstuhl Perspectives workshop was held on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. The goal of the workshop was to describe the state of the art in the field, including its relation with other areas, its shortcomings and strengths, together with recommendations for future progress. We developed this manifesto based on the presentations, panels, working groups, and discussions that took place at the Dagstuhl Workshop. It is a declaration of our views on Knowledge Representation: its origins, goals, milestones, and current foci; its relation to other disciplines, especially to Artificial Intelligence; and on its challenges, along with key priorities for the next decade.

Theory and Practice of Logic Programming

Abstract:Abstract Several formal systems, such as resolution and minimal model semantics, provide a framework for logic programming. In this article, we will survey the use of structural proof theory as an alternative foundation. Researchers have been using this foundation for the past 35 years to elevate logic programming from its roots in first-order classical logic into higher-order versions of intuitionistic and linear logic. These more expressive logic programming languages allow for capturing stateful computations and rich forms of abstractions, including higher-order programming, modularity, and abstract data types. Term-level bindings are another kind of abstraction, and these are given an elegant and direct treatment within both proof theory and these extended logic programming languages. Logic programming has also inspired new results in proof theory, such as those involving polarity and focused proofs. These recent results provide a high-level means for presenting the differences between forward-chaining and backward-chaining style inferences. Anchoring logic programming in proof theory has also helped identify its connections and differences with functional programming, deductive databases, and model checking.
