Abstract:Given an arbitrarily weak notion of left-<f>-porosity and an arbitrarily strong notion of right-<g>-porosity, we construct an example of closed subset of the real line which is not sigma-left-<f>-porous and is right-<g>-porous. We also briefly summarize the relations between three different definitions of porosity controlled by a function; we then observe that our construction gives the example for any combination of these definitions of left-porosity and right-porosity.

Abstract:Abstract upper densities are monotone and subadditive functions from the power set of positive integers into the unit real interval that generalize the upper densities used in number theory, including the upper asymptotic density, the upper Banach density, and the upper logarithmic density. At the open problem session of the Workshop ``Densities and their application'', held at St. Étienne in July 2013, G. Grekos asked a question whether there is a ``nice'' abstract upper density, whose the family of null sets is precisely a given ideal of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$, where ``nice'' would mean the properties of the familiar densities consider in number theory. In 2018, M. Di Nasso and R. Jin (Acta Arith. 185 (2018), no. 4) showed that the answer is positive for the summable ideals (for instance, the family of finite sets and the family of sequences whose series of reciprocals converge) when ``nice'' density means translation invariant and rich density (i.e. density which is onto the unit interval). In this paper we extend their result to all ideals with the Baire property.

Abstract:In this article we first compare the set of elements in the socle of an ideal of a polynomial algebra over a field K that are not in the ideal itself with Macaulay's inverse systems of such polynomial algebras in a purely combinatorial way for monomial ideals, and then develop some closure operational properties for the related poset . We then derive some algebraic propositions of -graded rings (a natural generalization of the usual -grading where is a monoid) that then have some combinatorial consequences. Interestingly, some of the results from this part that uniformly hold for polynomial rings are always false when the ring is local. We finally delve into some direct computations, in relation to a given term order of the monomials, for general zero-dimensional Gorenstein ideals, and we deduce a few explicit observations and results for the inverse systems from some recent results about socles.

Abstract:Recently, H. Dao and R. Nair gave a combinatorial description of simplicial complexes such that the squarefree reduction of the Stanley–Reisner ideal of has the WLP in degree 1 and characteristic zero. In this paper, we apply the connections between analytic spread of equigenerated monomial ideals, mixed multiplicities and birational monomial maps to give a sufficient and necessary condition for the squarefree reduction to satisfy the WLP in degree i and characteristic zero in terms of mixed multiplicities of monomial ideals that contain combinatorial information of , we call them incidence ideals. As a consequence, we give an upper bound to the possible failures of the WLP of in degree i in positive characteristics in terms of mixed multiplicities. Moreover, we extend Dao and Nair's criterion to arbitrary monomial ideals in positive odd characteristics.

Abstract:We show that the maximal shifts in the minimal free resolution of the quotients of a polynomial ring by a monomial ideal are subadditive as a function of the homological degree. This answers a question that has received some attention in recent years. To do so, we define and study a new model for the homology of posets, given by the so called synor complex. We also introduce an Eilenberg-Zilber type shuffle product on the simplicial chain complex of lattices.

Multiplicities of weakly graded families of ideals

Abstract:We extend the notion of multiplicity for weakly graded families of ideals. We prove the ``volume=multiplicity" formula and Minkowski inequality for weakly graded families of ideals. For weakly graded families of ideals of the form $\{(I_n:K)\}$ where $\{I_n\}$ is a graded family, we relate this multiplicity with multiplicity of $\{I_n\}$ and provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the equality in Minkowski inequality if $\{I_n\}$ is a bounded filtration. We generalize a result of Rees characterizing the inclusion of ideals with the same multiplicity for weakly graded families of ideals $\{(I_n:K)\}$. We also explore the asymptotic behaviour of $\ell_R(H_{\mathfrak m}^0(R/(I_n:K)))$.

Abstract:Existence and uniqueness of solutions is shown for a class of viscoelastic flows in porous media with particular attention to problems with nonsmooth porosities. The considered models are formulated in terms of the time-dependent nonlinear interaction between porosity and effective pressure, which in certain cases leads to porosity waves. In particular, conditions for well-posedness in the presence of initial porosities with jump discontinuities are identified.

Abstract:It has been known that the Cartesian product of two Suslin non-sigma-porous sets in topologically complete metric spaces is non-sigma-porous in the product space. The main aim of the present paper is to answer the natural question whether a similar result can be proved for lower porosity. It apears the answer is no, as we construct closed non-sigma-lower porous subsets of the real line A and B such that the Cartesian product of A and B is lower porous. In the present article we provide an example of two closed non-sigma-lower porous sets with lower porous product. On the other hand, we prove the following: Let X and Y be topologically complete metric spaces, let A be a non-sigma-lower porous Suslin subset of X and let B be a non-sigma-porous Suslin subset of Y. Then the product of A and B is non-sigma-lower porous. We also provide a brief summary of some basic properties of lower porosity, including a simple characterization of Suslin non-sigma-lower porous sets in topologically complete metric spaces.

Abstract:We consider the ideal of nowhere dense sets in the common division topology (Szyszkowska's ideal), and examine some of its basic properties. We also explore the possible inclusions between the studied ideal and Furstenberg's and Rizza's ideals, thus answering open questions posed in a recent article by A. Nowik and P. Szyszkowska [17]. Moreover, we discuss the relationships of the Szyszkowska's ideal with selected well-known ideals playing an important role in number theory and combinatorics.

Abstract:\emph{Minkowski rings} are certain rings of simple functions on the Euclidean space $W = {\mathbb{R}}^d$ with multiplicative structure derived from Minkowski addition of convex polytopes. When the ring is (finitely) generated by a set ${\cal{P}}$ of indicator functions of $n$ polytopes then the ring can be presented as ${\mathbb{C}}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/I$ when viewed as a ${\mathbb{C}}$-algebra, where $I$ is the ideal describing all the relations implied by identities among Minkowski sums of elements of ${\cal{P}}$. We discuss in detail the $1$-dimensional case, the $d$-dimensional box case and the affine Coxeter arrangement in ${\mathbb{R}}^2$ where the convex sets are formed by closed half-planes with bounding lines making the regular triangular grid in ${\mathbb{R}}^2$. We also consider, for a given polytope $P$, the Minkowski ring $M^\pm_F(P)$ of the collection ${\cal{F}}(P)$ of the nonempty faces of $P$ and their multiplicative inverses. Finally we prove some general properties of identities in the Minkowski ring of ${\cal{F}}(P)$; in particular, we show that Minkowski rings behave well under Cartesian product, namely that $M^\pm_F(P\times Q) \cong M^{\pm}_F(P)\otimes M^{\pm}_F(Q)$ as ${\mathbb{C}}$-algebras where $P$ and $Q$ are polytopes.

On algebraic sums, trees and ideals in the Baire space

Abstract:We work in the Baire space $\mathbb{Z}^\omega$ equipped with the coordinate-wise addition $+$. Consider a $\sigma-$ideal $\mathcal{I}$ and a family $\mathbb{T}$ of some kind of perfect trees. We are interested in results of the form: for every $A\in \mathcal{I}$ and a tree $T\in\mathbb{T}$ there exists $T'\in \mathbb{T}, T'\subseteq T$ such that $A+\underbrace{[T']+[T']+\dots +[T']}_{\text{n--times}}\in \mathcal{I}$ for each $n\in\omega$. Explored tree types include perfect trees, uniformly perfect trees, Miller trees, Laver trees and $\omega-$Silver trees. The latter kind of trees is an analogue of Silver trees from the Cantor space. Besides the standard $\sigma$-ideal $\mathcal{M}$ of meager sets, we also analyze $\mathcal{M}_-$ and fake null sets $\mathcal{N}$. The latter two are born out of the characterizations of their respective analogues in the Cantor space. The key ingredient in proofs were combinatorial characterizations of these ideals in the Baire space.

Abstract:Abstract With every σ -ideal I on a Polish space we associate the σ -ideal I * generated by the closed sets in I . We study the forcing notions of Borel sets modulo the respective σ -ideals I and I * and find connections between their forcing properties. To this end, we associate to a σ -ideal on a Polish space an ideal on a countable set and show how forcing properties of the forcing depend on combinatorial properties of the ideal. We also study the 1–1 or constant property of σ -ideals, i.e., the property that every Borel function defined on a Borel positive set can be restricted to a positive Borel set on which it either 1–1 or constant. We prove the following dichotomy: if I is a σ -ideal generated by closed sets, then either the forcing P 1 adds a Cohen real, or else I has the 1–1 or constant property.

Saturation of reduced products

Abstract:We study reduced products $M=\prod_n M_n/\mathrm{Fin}$ of countable structures in a countable language associated with the Fréchet ideal. We prove that such $M$ is $2^{\aleph_0}$-saturated if its theory is stable and not $\aleph_2$-saturated otherwise (regardless of whether the Continuum Hypothesis holds). This implies that $M$ is isomorphic to an ultrapower (associated with an ultrafilter on $\mathbb N$) if its theory is stable, even if the CH fails. We also improve a result of Farah and Shelah and prove that there is a forcing extension in which such reduced product $M$ is isomorphic to an ultrapower if and only if the theory of $M$ is stable. All of these conclusions apply for reduced products associated with $F_\sigma$ ideals or more general layered ideals. We also prove that a reduced product associated with the asymptotic density zero ideal $\mathcal Z_0$, or any other analytic P-ideal that is not $F_\sigma$, is not even $\aleph_1$-saturated if its theory is unstable.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce the geometric concept of one-sided weakly porous sets in the real line and show that a set $E\subset\mathbb{R}$ satisfies $d(\cdot,E)^{-\alpha}\in A_1^+(\mathbb{R})\cap L^1_\textrm{loc}(\mathbb{R})$ for some $\alpha>0$ if and only if $E$ is right-sided weakly porous. Furthermore, we find that the property of being both left-sided and right-sided weakly porous is equivalent to the recent weakly porous condition discussed in the bibliography, which, in turn, was previously found to be intimately related to the usual class of Muckenhoupt weights $A_1$.

Abstract:We consider a combinatorial property isolated in the field of ideal convergence, a P-property for two ideals on natural numbers. We show that among selected ideals induced by disjoint families, not all pairs satisfy P-property for two ideals. In many cases we specify the inducing partitions for which the corresponding ideals possess the property. Regarding selector ideals, a useful coloring-like necessary condition is provided.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a notion of universal sets for ideals. We show that there exist universal sets of minimal Borel complexity for classic ideals like null subsets of $2^\omega$ and meager subsets of any Polish space, and demonstrate that the existence of such sets is helpful in establishing some facts about the real line in generic extensions. We also construct universal sets for $\mathcal{E}$ - the $\sigma$-ideal generated by closed null subsets of $2^\omega$, and for some ideals connected with forcing notions: $\mathcal{K}_\sigma$ subsets of $\omega^{\omega}$ and the Laver ideal. We also consider Fubini products of ideals and show that there are $\Sigma^0_3$ universal sets for $\mathcal{N}\otimes\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{M}\otimes\mathcal{N}$.

Abstract:We give an expression for the {\L}ojasiewicz exponent of a wide class of n-tuples of ideals $(I_1,..., I_n)$ in $\O_n$ using the information given by a fixed Newton filtration. In order to obtain this expression we consider a reformulation of {\L}ojasiewicz exponents in terms of Rees mixed multiplicities. As a consequence, we obtain a wide class of semi-weighted homogeneous functions $(\mathbb{C}^n,0)\to (\mathbb{C},0)$ for which the {\L}ojasiewicz of its gradient map $\nabla f$ attains the maximum possible value.

Abstract:Demailly, Ein and Lazarsfeld \cite{DEL} proved the subadditivity theorem for multiplier ideals, which states the multiplier ideal of the product of ideals is contained in the product of the individual multiplier ideals, on non-singular varieties. We prove that, in two-dimensional case, the subadditivity theorem holds on log-terminal singularities. However, in higher dimensional case, we have several counter-examples. We consider the subadditivity theorem for monomial ideals on toric rings, and construct a counter-example on a three-dimensional toric ring.
