Abstract:Magnesium implants are highly advantageous in orthopedic load-bearing applications due to their biodegradable properties, which eliminate the need for a second surgical removal from the body. However, these implants face challenges related to their high corrosion rate, which can lead to a loss of mechanical integrity and fatigue strength before tissue recovery is complete. To address this issue, researchers have conducted extensive studies on various modifications. This comprehensive review article categorizes and summarizes recent research on these processes, focusing on two different types: bulk and surface modifications. Moreover, it carefully examines the impact of these processes on the corrosion and corrosion-fatigue properties of magnesium-based materials within biological environments. By highlighting the potential benefits of different bulk and surface modifications in improving the performance of magnesium implants, this review provides valuable insights for both researchers and industry professionals involved in working with implant materials.
