Abstract:This book explores urban public life through the microcosm of the Chengdu teahouse. Like most public spaces, the teahouse was and still is an enduring symbol of Chinese popular culture, stemming back centuries and prevailing through political transformations, modernization, and globalization. The time period covered begins basically with the establishment of the People’s Republic in 1949-50, goes through the end of the Cultural Revolution and into the post-Mao reform era. We see clearly that the role and importance of the teahouse changed abruptly, going from severe constriction in its operations to a time when public spaces flourished unrestricted. During the Mao era, the state achieved tight control over society generally, and it was able to penetrate to the very core of society in order to control almost all its resources. Thus, the spaces usually available for sociality and for the natural development of social activities were sharply limited. The post-Mao economic reforms were a turning point in public life because everyday life was dominated by sweeping “open-market” economic reforms that were structured within a unique type of socialist political system, and to a significant degree public life moved away from state control. This book can enhance our understanding of public life and political culture in Chengdu under the Communist state, with its political needs and agendas; from there we may reflect on the situation of other Chinese cities.

The Spatial Fractal Characteristics of Teahouse’s Random Aggregation in Chengdu City

Abstract:This paper selects the teahouse system in Chengdu as the object of this research.The city-scale,tourism landmark and famous teahouses are regarded as the center point,the calculation is done on the teahouse’s dimension of the random aggregation in different spacial scales.In the city-scale,teahouses present a centrifugal distribution,with the Tianfu square(which is the center of the spatial distribution in the city and the administrative center) being the center point and the random aggregation of the spatical structure is relatively weak.Within the 0.5 km away from attractions,with the tourism landmark as the center point,the teahouse subsystem’s fractal structure characteristics are not obvious;With ten famous tea-houses being the center point,the spatial structure of the tea-house subsystem appears to be the centripetal distribution and its random aggregation is relatively strong.Within the 1.0 km away from the attractions,the spatial structure of each teahouse subsystem appears to be the double fractal structure when the five famous teahouses are regarded as the center point,and the teahouse subsystem’s fractal structure characteristics become increasingly obvious with the enlargement of the scale.With the ten famous teahouses as the center point,the random aggregation of the spatial structure of the tea-house subsystem is relatively strong,which demonstrates that the scale of 1.0 km is the aggregation center when the famous teahouse subsystem conducts self-evolution,and the spatial structure appears to be evident fractal structure.The case demonstrates that the fractal theory could be applied to indicate the microscopic spatial structure of the recreation space in city in different scales.

Abstract:Abstract This article reveals that teahouses were the scene of a variety of conflicts, from verbal disputes and petty thefts to violence and murder. The author argues that the teahouse, although mainly a place for leisure, business and public life, also became an arena for struggle for livelihood. The teahouse was a microcosm of Chengdu, and anything undertaken there reflected the larger society. Conflicts in the teahouse to a large extent reflected current social issues. Fights broke out when people found it difficult to solve their problems, to make a living and to survive, or when they were anxious or unhappy in the face of injustice, the deteriorating economy, hunger, insecurity and war. On the other hand, conflicts also arose from the abuse of power and privilege and the tyrannical response to social turmoil by thugs, soldiers and outlaws. We can see such unfortunate periods during the first half of the twentieth century. The author also tries to point out that the teahouse functioned as a stage where all kinds of people performed roles that were both good and evil, but all became part of teahouse culture and teahouse life.

Abstract:The article analyzes the difficulties and compromise solutions that the Chinese architectural profession finds to meet the current trends in the context of changing civilization. Even after decades of changes and innovations, the Chinese architectural profession still has not been able to create distinctive characteristics of Chinese architecture to follow the aesthetics of modern Chinese people. The design of the Guanghua commercial complex in Chengdu presented in this article uses elements of traditional Chinese culture, gardens and calligraphy to create an “artistic concept” in contemporary architectural design that reflects the identity inherent in the place. The purpose of the article is to propose a new way of studying the ideas of modern Chinese architectural design.

Taoist tea room space design with bamboo as a design element has broad development prospects. This paper combines the similarities of bamboo culture and Taoist cultural image in Sichuan, combines the "meaning" of bamboo and Taoist culture with the "environment" of teahouse in objective reality, and redesigns the space of Taoist teahouse with the needs of The Times, providing a good theoretical and practical place for the development of bamboo products.

Abstract:The article delves into the concept of “Chineseness” in contemporary Chinese architecture, a strategic tool for creating distinctive styles rooted in Chinese identity. It serves not only to distinguish projects from market-driven trends but also to establish a pivotal position in the global architectural landscape. "Chineseness" among 24 identified keywords represents a practical strategy embraced by many young architects with international exposure. The traditional Chinese dwelling, a symbol of familial and cultural essence, particularly in the context of home culture, is a primary inspiration for contemporary architects. The research adopts a case study approach, focusing on Tulou-related cases from the last fifteen years, encompassing various building types. The Tulou, a mountain-dwelling with rich cultural connotations, is introduced, reflecting ancient Chinese philosophies in its architectural principles. The case studies, including URBANUS’s “Tulou Collective Housing 2008" and Chengdu’s “Tulou Theater,” demonstrate how Tulou prototypes can be creatively adapted. These designs not only replicate forms but also capture the communal spirit inherent in traditional dwellings. “Stepped Courtyards” by OPEN Architecture reinterprets Tulou typology for a staff dormitory, emphasizing community awareness. In conclusion, the concept of “Chineseness” emerges as a prominent topic, showcasing the dynamic and adaptable nature of traditional Chinese culture and modern architectural expressions. The cases illustrate the evolving intersection between traditional Chinese culture and modern architecture, offering insights into the future trajectory of Chinese architectural culture. The interrelated keywords highlight the nuanced and evolving nature of “Chineseness” in architectural practices.

Abstract:The traditional Chinese Zen tea culture has been continuously accumulated in the long history of thousands of years, and the philosophical thoughts, value orientation and aesthetic psychology contained in it have exerted a profound influence on us. This article starts with a special research on the landscape beautification plan of Chengdu Shouxin·Red Star International Plaza, explores the application of Zen tea philosophy in the external landscape of a modern commercial complex, and grasps the brand theme expression of commercial space from the perspective of theory and plan practice, which targeted the research of Shouxin·Red Star International Plaza’s exterior design beautification, planning layout, functional zoning, scenic spot design, art sketch design, and building facade renovation to explore the “Zen tea” concept and expression of the external spatial landscape of the urban commercial complex.

Abstract:The article is devoted to determining the parameters for the formation of the symbolic space of Chinese tea culture. The research methodology is related to the cultural analysis of the phenomenon of tea culture as a certain symbolic space. The author focuses on the fact that tea culture, being an important part of the traditional national culture of China, creates a special space for the life of Chinese society and the everyday culture of the Chinese, which includes a variety of cultural forms. The symbolic space of Chinese tea culture is a holistic expression of its ideal meanings through objects, phenomena and activities as elements of this culture. The Chinese tea ceremony is rooted in Chinese culture, permeated with ancient theories of philosophy, aesthetics, ethics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, literature and art, and is inextricably linked with the Confucian and Taoist ideals of traditional culture. The ethical function of Chinese tea culture throughout history is based on the concept of harmony, emphasizing the dialectical thinking of people living in peace and peaceful dialogue. The symbols of tea culture reflect the external form and internal structure of tea culture, associated with obvious national and regional characteristics. Based on the interpretation of the concept of tea culture and its presentation in culture, the concept of presentation of tea culture can be defined as follows: the entire process of people’s participation in the construction of cultural activities by creating tea as a cultural symbol and using this symbol. Currently, the symbolic space of Chinese tea culture is expanding and essentially covering the whole world.

Abstract:Numerous motifs inspired by the tea ceremony and the teahouse form part of Japanese aesthetics. That teahouses are vital as archetypes in modern Japanese architecture is therefore not surprising. This article focuses on the ways in which the architectural type of the teahouse was discovered and interpreted in the modern context, mainly by Sutemi Horiguchi. It summarises Horiguchi's approach to the teahouse in three main points: relating the modern concept of non-urbanity to the teahouse; accepting the openness and secular life; and replacing the concept of <i>kiwari</i> with geometry. Based on the work of Horiguchi and his successors, the article shows that Japanese architects' interpretations of the teahouse became more abstract. As one of the archetypes in Japanese architecture, the teahouse today reflects the preferences and ideals of the modern Japanese.

Abstract:This paper reviews the Digital Tea House, a joint workshop in August of 2010 held at the University of Tokyo, Department of Architecture, together with Columbia University GSAPP. Three pavilions for hosting ceremony were designed and built in less than one month, in an attempt to bridge technology and culture not only through design but also fabrication. Issues addressed in the process included applications of computational design, interpretations of tradition and culture in spatial or activity oriented expressions, structural stability, to practical solutions for quick physical materialization. Three teams comprised of 6 to 8 students, each a blend of different nationalities, ultimately produced 3 full-scale tea houses with the same software, primary material, budget, and principal fabrication method.

Abstract:The United Nations and local governments have supported a four-point sustainable development framework, including environmental responsibility, economic viability, social equity, and cultural vitality. This study is based on the theoretical framework of sustainability to study the traditional Chinese siheyuan residence. Space syntax attempts to explain how spatial structures express social or cultural significance, such as the hierarchical relationship and privacy in it. The main purposes of this study are: (1) To analyze the spatial topological layout of traditional siheyuans by using the space syntax theory, and thus deduce the cultural connotation embedded in traditional siheyuans; (2) to compare and analyze the spatial morphology and behavior patterns of traditional and modern houses; (3) to explore how to integrate courtyard features into contemporary design and promote cultural sustainability. This study expounds the concept and application of syntactic analysis, and the relationship between the syntactic attributes of specific buildings in a particular area, and the culture and life of the local people within that area. As time goes by, the spatial form of houses has changed. However, in terms of spatial allocation index, the significant difference between traditional residences and modern residences lies in the integration and equivalence of all spaces in residences. We can learn from the cultural values of traditional siheyuans, meaning “people-oriented”, to rationally design modern residences with cultural connotations.

Abstract:Sustainable development faces very different social and cultural conditions in China because the Chinese history suggests that China has taken an approach of "sustainable undevelopment" in a structural and ideological sense.This paper reviews the process and discusses how the space is shaped.In so doing,this paper points out that the new media communication may greatly facilitate the disintegration of the traditional Chinese social structure and ideology. Abstract:This paper aims at discussing the recent evolutions experienced by housing in Contemporary China through the study of the living habits of wealthy families in the fringes of Shanghai and Chongqing. The copycat phenomenon widespread across Chinese cities is one example, on the one hand, of the transformations of social uses of the house which gains a dimension of visibility; and, on the other hand, of an object that so far has been studied only through Western-centred conceptions of visuality and materiality. This research offers a different perspective, one of the inhabitants of neighbourhoods with exotic atmospheres. The analysis of the discourse of the residents as well as their daily practices of space appropriation and home decoration reveals that the house plays a new role in social interactions. As a social mean of representing the status of its occupants, the outside part of the building, its surroundings and some of the interior are assigned a visual dimension destined to the outside viewers and guests of the family, transforming the relationships between the public and private spheres which duality do not match the one of what is visible and what is invisible. Contrariwise to general views about the Western style neighbourhoods, what is offered to the view does not convey a process of westernisation or acculturation of the daily life, but expresses the will for a liberation from certain social constraints experienced in the former place of residency. The Chinese contemporary home is then, among this wealthier part of the population where domestic space is a valuable resource, the place of production of a new urbanity where different forms of sociality and representations coexist.

Abstract:In recent years, promoting sustainability in the workplace, particularly in educational environments, has become a global imperative. With the progress of society and the in-depth development of education and teaching reform, the architectural space model of traditional college and university teaching buildings can no longer well meet the various needs of today's society, and at present, the teaching buildings of colleges and universities and primary and secondary schools in Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, China, are dominated by traditional teaching buildings. This paper discusses the architectural and environmental design of teaching buildings, in addition to considering the traditional teaching buildings to undertake the educational functions and cultural heritage of the architectural model, but also consider including thermal comfort, air quality, lighting, acoustic quality, office layout, furniture, cleanliness and maintenance, so as to innovate to meet the needs of students' daily campus life, suitable for the contemporary social education of the college and university teaching buildings buildings, through the creation of a unique campus atmosphere that highlighting the uniqueness of the institution and creating a personalized educational experience, this focus on creating environmentally responsible and occupant-centered spaces has led to the emergence of IEQ as a key aspect of sustainable building design.
