Abstract:We apply in simulation a reservoir computer based on evanescently coupled GaAs microrings for real-time compensation of a nonlinear distortion of a 50 Gbaud 16-QAM signal with the launch power up to 12 dBm in a standard single-mode optical fibre. We clearly evidence the crucial role of fast nonlinear response in enabling all-optical signal recovery in real time. With our system we are able to reduce the signal error rate below the forward error correction limit for a 20 km fibre and 12 dBm launch power.

Abstract:Optical fiber communication systems play an important role in broadband signal transmissions, where the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmissions greatly degrade the transmission performance and limit the fiber capacity and reach. This paper analyzes and compensates for the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmission with the delay-based optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) scheme, which provides benefits like time-adaptive tracking, low-complexity and hardware implementation potentials. The generalization of the analysis and compensation schemes from the traditional amplitude-modulated PAM signal to the amplitude-phase-modulated QAM signal is achieved by signal preprocessing. In the numerical study, the proposed RC-based fiber dynamics compensation scheme, with fiber reach from 1400km to 3000km, shows considerable performance with the digital backpropagation scheme, which is always used as the benchmark for nonlinear compensation of long-haul fiber transmissions. The realization complexity is much reduced with the RC-based schemes, which has provided a new dawn for optics-based nonlinear analysis and compensations.

Abstract:High-quality lithium niobate (LN) thin-film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optical applications. The strict phase-matching condition should be satisfied for an efficient nonlinear optical process, which requires dispersion engineering with an LN microresonator. However, this is challenging in single microresonator, resulting from the fabrication error. Here, we demonstrate strong nonlinear effects in a photonic molecule (PM) structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks. The size mismatch of the microdisks enables phase matching by employing coupling-induced frequency splitting to compensate for the material and geometric dispersion. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical phenomena including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic signal. Meanwhile, an ultra-high four-wave mixing absolute conversion efficiency of 14% as obtained when the second harmonic signal power is at microwatts level. The LN PM is of great potential for applications in nonlinear integrated photonics.

Abstract:High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Abstract:We investigate, both numerically and experimentally, the usefulness of a distributed nonlinearity in a passive coherent photonic reservoir computer. This computing system is based on a passive coherent optical fiber-ring cavity in which part of the nonlinearities are realized by the Kerr nonlinearity. Linear coherent reservoirs can solve difficult tasks but are aided by nonlinear components in their input or output layer. Here, we compare the impact of nonlinear transformations of information in the reservoir input layer, its bulk - the fiber-ring cavity - and its readout layer. For the injection of data into the reservoir, we compare a linear input mapping to the nonlinear transfer function of a Mach Zehnder modulator. For the reservoir bulk, we quantify the impact of the optical Kerr effect. For the readout layer we compare a linear output to a quadratic output implemented by a photodiode. We find that optical nonlinearities in the reservoir itself, such as the optical Kerr nonlinearity studied in the present work, enhance the task solving capability of the reservoir. This suggests that such nonlinearities will play a key role in future coherent all-optical reservoir computers.
Experimental results on nonlinear distortion compensation using photonic reservoir computing with a single set of weights for different wavelengths

Abstract:Photonics-based computing approaches in combination with wavelength division multiplexing offer a potential solution to modern data and bandwidth needs. This paper experimentally takes an important step towards wavelength division multiplexing in an integrated waveguide-based photonic reservoir computing platform by using a single set of readout weights for up to at least 3 ITU-T channels to efficiently scale the data bandwidth when processing a nonlinear signal equalization task on a 28 Gbps modulated on-off keying signal. Using multiple-wavelength training, we obtain bit error rates well below that of the [Formula: see text] forward error correction limit at high fiber input powers of 18 dBm, which result in high nonlinear distortion. The results of the reservoir chip are compared to a tapped delay line filter and clearly show that the system performs nonlinear equalization. This was achieved using only limited post processing which in future work can be implemented in optical hardware as well.

Abstract:Fiber nonlinearities, that lead to nonlinear signal interference (NLI), are typically regarded as an instantaneous material response with respect to the optical field. However, in addition to an instantaneous part, the nonlinear fiber response consists of a delayed contribution, referred to as the Raman response. The imaginary part of its Fourier transform, referred to as the Raman gain spectrum, leads to inter-channel stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS). ISRS is a nonlinear effect that redistributes optical power from high to lower frequencies during propagation. However, as the nonlinear fiber response is causal, the Raman spectrum obeys the Kramers-Kronig relations resulting in the real part of the complex valued Raman spectrum. While the impact of the imaginary part (i.e. ISRS) is well studied, the direct implications of its associated real part on the NLI are unexplored. In this work, a theory is proposed to analytically quantify the impact of the real Raman spectrum on the nonlinear interference power. Starting from a generalized Manakov equation, an extension of the ISRS Gaussian Noise (GN) model is derived to include the real Raman spectrum and, thus, to account for the complete nonlinear Raman response. Accurate integral expressions are derived and approximations in closed-form are proposed. Different formulations for the case of single -and dual polarized signals are derived and novel analytical approximations of the real Raman spectrum are proposed. Moreover, it is analytically shown that the real Raman spectrum scales the strength of the instantaneous nonlinear distortions depending on the frequency separation of the interacting frequencies. A simple functional form is derived to assess the scaling of the NLI strength. The proposed theory is validated by numerical simulations over C-and C+L band, using experimentally measured fiber data.

Integrated Passive Nonlinear Optical Isolators

Abstract:Fiber and bulk-optical isolators are widely used to stabilize laser cavities by preventing unwanted feedback. However, their integrated counterparts have been slow to be adopted. While several strategies for on-chip optical isolation have been realized, these rely on either integration of magneto-optic materials or high frequency modulation with acousto-optic or electro-optic modulators. Here, we demonstrate an integrated approach for passively isolating a continuous wave laser using the intrinsically non-reciprocal Kerr nonlinearity in ring resonators. Using silicon nitride as a model platform, we achieve single ring isolation of 17-23dB with 1.8-5.5dB insertion loss, and a cascaded ring isolation of 35dB with 5dB insertion loss. Employing these devices, we demonstrate hybrid integration and isolation with a semi-conductor laser chip.

Abstract:Nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT) and eigenvalue communication with the use of nonlinear signal spectrum (both discrete and continuous) have been recently discussed as a promising transmission method to combat fiber nonlinearity impairments. However, because the NFT-based transmission method employs the integrability property of the lossless nonlinear Schrdinger equation (NLSE), the original approach can only be applied directly to optical links with ideal distributed Raman amplification. In this paper, we investigate in details the impact of a non-ideal Raman gain profile on the performance of the nonlinear inverse synthesis (NIS) scheme, in which the transmitted information is encoded directly onto the continuous part of the nonlinear signal spectrum. We propose the lossless path-averaged (LPA) model for fiber links with non-ideal Raman gain profile by taking into account the average effect of the Raman gain. We show that the NIS scheme employing the LPA model can offer a performance gain of 3dB regardless of the Raman gain profiles.

Abstract:We numerically demonstrate the feasibility of constructing an all-optical pulse restorer by using a microresonator structure with Kerr nonlinearity. We obtain a clear nonlinear power transfer curve capable of improving the signal-to-noise ratio and reducing the bit error rate for digital signals. Since we take advantage of field enhancement at resonance, this integrated reshaper could be much smaller than other gates based on nonlinear fibers or waveguides.
Direct coupling of nonlinear integrated cavities for all-optical reservoir computing

Abstract:We consider theoretically a network of directly coupled optical microcavities to implement a space-multiplexed optical neural network in an integrated nanophotonic circuit. Nonlinear photonic network integrations based on direct coupling ensures a highly dense integration, reducing the chip footprint by several orders of magnitude compared to other implementations. Different nonlinear effects inherent to such microcavities are studied when used for realizing an all-optical autonomous computing substrate, here based on the reservoir computing concept. We provide an in-depth analysis of the impact of basic microcavity parameters on computational metrics of the system, namely, the dimensionality and the consistency. Importantly, we find that differences between frequencies and bandwidths of supermodes formed by the direct coupling is the determining factor of the reservoir's dimensionality and its scalability. The network's dimensionality can be improved with frequency-shifting nonlinear effects such as the Kerr effect, while two-photon absorption has an opposite effect. Finally, we demonstrate in simulation that the proposed reservoir is capable of solving the Mackey-Glass prediction and the optical signal recovery tasks at GHz timescale.

Abstract:Silicon microring resonators serve as critical components in integrated photonic neural network implementations, owing to their compact footprint, compatibility with CMOS technology, and passive nonlinear dynamics. Recent advancements have leveraged their filtering properties as weighting functions, and their nonlinear dynamics as activation functions with spiking capabilities. In this work, we investigate experimentally the linear and nonlinear dynamics of microring resonators for time delay reservoir computing, by introducing an external optical feedback loop. After effectively mitigating the impact of environmental noise on the fiber-based feedback phase dependencies, we evaluate the computational capacity of this system by assessing its performance across various benchmark tasks at a bit rate of few Mbps. We show that the additional memory provided by the optical feedback is necessary to achieve error-free operation in delayed-boolean tasks that require up to 3 bits of memory. In this case the microring was operated in the linear regime and the photodetection was the nonlinear activation function. We also show that the Santa Fe and Mackey Glass prediction tasks are solved when the microring nonlinearities are activated. Notably, our study reveals competitive outcomes even when employing only 7 virtual nodes within our photonic reservoir. Our findings illustrate the silicon microring’s versatile performance in the presence of optical feedback, highlighting its ability to be tailored for various computing applications.

Abstract:Enhancing optical nonlinearity Intense pulses of light interacting with a dielectric material can induce optical nonlinear behavior, whereby the frequency of the output light can be doubled or tripled or excited to even higher harmonics of the input light. Usually this interaction is weak and occurs over many thousands of wavelengths, typically requiring the combination of bulk volumes of material with a confining cavity. Using a mechanism of light confinement called bound states in the continuum, Koshelev et al. show that enhanced second-harmonic generation can be obtained in nanoscale subwavelength cylinders of a dielectric material. Photonic machine learning implementation for signal recovery in optical communications

Abstract:Machine learning techniques have proven very efficient in assorted classification tasks. Nevertheless, processing time-dependent high-speed signals can turn into an extremely challenging task, especially when these signals have been nonlinearly distorted. Recently, analogue hardware concepts using nonlinear transient responses have been gaining significant interest for fast information processing. Here, we introduce a simplified photonic reservoir computing scheme for data classification of severely distorted optical communication signals after extended fibre transmission. To this end, we convert the direct bit detection process into a pattern recognition problem. Using an experimental implementation of our photonic reservoir computer, we demonstrate an improvement in bit-error-rate by two orders of magnitude, compared to directly classifying the transmitted signal. This improvement corresponds to an extension of the communication range by over 75%. While we do not yet reach full real-time post-processing at telecom rates, we discuss how future designs might close the gap.

Abstract:In optical communication systems, fibre nonlinearity is the major obstacle in increasing the transmission capacity. Typically, digital signal processing techniques and hardware are used to deal with optical communication signals, but increasing speed and computational complexity create challenges for such approaches. Highly parallel, ultrafast neural networks using photonic devices have the potential to ease the requirements placed on digital signal processing circuits by processing the optical signals in the analogue domain. Here we report a silicon photonic–electronic neural network for solving fibre nonlinearity compensation in submarine optical-fibre transmission systems. Our approach uses a photonic neural network based on wavelength-division multiplexing built on a silicon photonic platform compatible with complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor technology. We show that the platform can be used to compensate for optical fibre nonlinearities and improve the quality factor of the signal in a 10,080 km submarine fibre communication system. The Q-factor improvement is comparable to that of a software-based neural network implemented on a workstation assisted with a 32-bit graphic processing unit.

Abstract:The combination of nonlinear and integrated photonics has recently seen a surge with Kerr frequency comb generation in micro-resonators as the most significant achievement. Efficient nonlinear photonic chips have myriad applications including high speed optical signal processing, on-chip multi-wavelength lasers, metrology, molecular spectroscopy, and quantum information science. Aluminium gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) exhibits very high material nonlinearity and low nonlinear loss when operated below half its bandgap energy. However, difficulties in device processing and low device effective nonlinearity made Kerr frequency comb generation elusive. Here, we demonstrate AlGaAs-on-insulator as a nonlinear platform at telecom wavelengths. Using newly developed fabrication processes, we show high-quality-factor (Q>100,000) micro-resonators with integrated bus waveguides in a planar circuit where optical parametric oscillation is achieved with a record low threshold power of 3 mW and a frequency comb spanning 350 nm is obtained. Our demonstration shows the huge potential of the AlGaAs-on-insulator platform in integrated nonlinear photonics.

Abstract:High confinement, integrated silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides have recently emerged as attractive platform for on-chip nonlinear optical devices. The fabrication of high-Q SiN microresonators with anomalous group velocity dispersion (GVD) has enabled broadband nonlinear optical frequency comb generation. Such frequency combs have been successfully applied in coherent communication and ultrashort pulse generation. However, the reliable fabrication of high confinement waveguides from stoichiometric, high stress SiN remains challenging. Here we present a novel photonic Damascene fabrication process enabling the use of substrate topography for stress control and thin film crack prevention. With close to unity sample yield we fabricate microresonators with $1.35\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ thick waveguides and optical Q factors of $3.7\times10^{6}$ and demonstrate single temporal dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) based coherent optical frequency comb generation. Our newly developed process is interesting also for other material platforms, photonic integration and mid infrared Kerr comb generation.

A broadband fiber-optic nonlinear interferometer

Abstract:We describe an all-fiber nonlinear interferometer based on four-wave mixing in highly nonlinear fiber. Our configuration realizes phase-sensitive interference with 97% peak visibility and >90% visibility over a broad 554 GHz optical band. By comparing the output noise power to the shot-noise level, we confirm noise cancellation at dark interference fringes, as required for quantum-enhanced sensitivity. Our device extends nonlinear interferometry to the important platform of highly nonlinear optical fiber, and could find application in a variety of fiber-based sensors.

Abstract:Reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) are key elements for modern optical communications. Despite their widespread deployment, their performance when intended for ultrafast data amplification is limited by their inherently slow gain dynamics. In this paper, we propose to employ a birefringent fiber loop (BFL) to compensate for the RSOA pattern-dependent behavior and extend its operation well beyond that allowed by its nominal optical modulation bandwidth. We apply a reduced model to describe the RSOA response and quantify the RSOA output distortion by means of a non-return-to-zero data pulse overshoot. We validate the outcomes of this model in the time domain both for the RSOA alone and with the assistance of the BFL by an extensive comparison to available measurements. The excellent matching between simulation and experimental results allows us to further investigate the impact of critical operating parameters and derive specifications for them so that the performance of the scheme against the overshoot is made acceptable. The theoretical predictions confirm the ability of the BFL to enhance the RSOA direct amplification capability and hence establish it as a frequency discriminator for complementing RSOAs’ versatile and scalable operation.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) has been studied for several decades and has attracted considerable attention for applications in high data rate optical communications and all-optical signal processing. The majority of NOLM research has focused on silica fiber-based implementations. While various fiber designs have been considered to increase the nonlinearity and manage dispersion, several meters to hundreds of meters of fiber are still required. On the other hand, there is increasing interest in developing photonic integrated circuits for realizing signal processing functions. In this paper, we realize the first-ever passive integrated NOLM in silicon photonics and demonstrate its application for all-optical signal processing. In particular, we show wavelength conversion of 10 Gb/s return-to-zero on-off keying (RZ-OOK) signals over a wavelength range of 30 nm with error-free operation and a power penalty of less than 2.5 dB, we achieve error-free nonreturn to zero (NRZ)-to-RZ modulation format conversion at 10 Gb/s also with a power penalty of less than 2.8 dB, and we obtain error-free all-optical time-division demultiplexing of a 40 Gb/s RZ-OOK data signal into its 10 Gb/s tributary channels with a maximum power penalty of 3.5 dB.
