Abstract:We give a survey of the model-theoretic approach to algebraically closed fields, algebraic varieties and algebraic groups. Much of what we say is taken quite directly from other sources, specifically [Po 89], [Po 87, Chapter 4], [Bousl 89], and [Pi 89], as well as from basic textbooks on algebraic geometry and algebraic groups ([Sh], [Bor]). As we tend to be brief with our proofs, the reader is advised to look at these other sources for additional details, where appropriate. Also all relevant attributions of results can be found there. The reader should see [Zie] in this volume for ω-stability, imaginaries, canonical bases etc. The present paper can serve as an introduction to naive algebraic geometry for model-theorists, as all the basic notions will be defined.

Abstract:Extending the thoroughly studied theory of group stability, we study Ulam stability type problems for associative and Lie algebras; namely, we investigate obstacles to rank-approximation of almost solutions by exact solutions for systems of polynomial equations. This leads to a rich theory of stable associative and Lie algebras, with connections to linear soficity, amenability, growth, and group stability. We develop rank-stability and instability tests, examine the effect of algebraic constructions on rank-stability, and prove that while finite-dimensional associative algebras are rank-stable, `most' finite-dimensional Lie algebras are not.

On Stability and Existence of Models in Abstract Elementary Classes

Abstract:For an abstract elementary class $\mathbf{K}$ and a cardinal $\lambda \geq LS(\mathbf{K})$, we prove under mild cardinal arithmetic assumptions, categoricity in two succesive cardinals, almost stability for $\lambda^+$-minimal types and continuity of splitting in $\lambda$, that stability in $\lambda$ is equivalent to the existence of a model in $\lambda^{++}$. The forward direction holds without any cardinal or categoricity assumptions, this result improves both [Vas18b, 12.1] and [MaYa24, 3.14]. Moreover, we prove a categoricity theorem for abstract elementary classes with weak amalgamation and tameness under mild structural assumptions in $\lambda$. A key feature of this result is that we do not assume amalgamation or arbitrarily large models.

Abstract:We investigate stability properties of the reductive Borel-Serre categories; these were introduced as a model for unstable algebraic K-theory in previous work. We see that they exhibit better homological stability properties than the general linear groups. We also show that they provide an explicit model for Yuan's partial algebraic K-theory.

Abstract:We set up a generalization of ubiquitous one parameter families in algebraic geometry and its use for stability theories ([Mum65, HL14, AHLH23]) to families over toric varieties, Novikov type rings, or its complex analytic analogues. The language allows us to reformulate degenerations of "irrational" direction in various literatures as canonical objects in a unified manner. Compatibly, we generalize the stable reduction type theorem for $\Theta$-stratification in [AHLH23] of Langton type to our higher rank setup.

Invariants under Stable Equivalences of Morita Type

Abstract:The aim of this article is to study some invariants of associative algebras under stable equivalences of Morita type. First of all, we show that, if two finite-dimensional self-injective k-algebras are stably equivalent of Morita type, then their orbit algebras are isomorphic. Secondly, it is verified that the quasitilted property of an algebra is invariant under stable equivalences of Morita type. As an application of this result, it is obtained that if an algebra is of finite representation type, then its tilted property is invariant under stable equivalences of Morita type; the other application to partial tilting modules is given in Section 4. Finally, we prove that when two finite-dimensional k-algebras are stably equivalent of Morita type, their repetitive algebras are also stably equivalent of Morita type under certain conditions.
Uniform rank metric stability of Lie algebras, Lie groups and lattices

Abstract:We study uniform stability of discrete groups, Lie groups and Lie algebras in the rank metric, and the connections between uniform stability of these objects. We prove that semisimple Lie algebras are far from being flexibly $\mathbb{C}$-stable, and that semisimple Lie groups and lattices in semisimple Lie groups of higher rank are not strictly $\mathbb{C}$-stable. Furthermore, we prove that free groups are not uniformly flexibly $F$-stable over any field $F$.

Abstract:We introduce a new framework called linear algebraic number theory (LANT) that reformulates the number-theoretic problem as a regression model and solves it using matrix algebra. This framework restricts all computations to log space, therefore replaces multiplication with addition and allows to capture variation in the natural numbers from variation in the prime numbers. This automatically puts prime numbers to their designated place of atomic particles of natural numbers and enables fruitful new formulations of number-theoretic functions. We outline the theory, derive some basic results, make connections to standard number theory and give an outlook regarding the Riemann hypothesis, number theory's long-standing enigma.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an associative ring and $M$ a finitely generated projective $A$-module. We introduce a category $\operatorname{RBS}(M)$ and prove several theorems which show that its geometric realisation functions as a well-behaved unstable algebraic K-theory space. These categories $\operatorname{RBS}(M)$ naturally arise as generalisations of the exit path $\infty$-category of the reductive Borel-Serre compactification of a locally symmetric space, and one of our main techniques is to find purely categorical analogues of some familiar structures in these compactifications.

Abstract:In previous works, the authors investigated the relationships between linear stability of a generated linear series $|V|$ on a curve $C$, and slope stabillity of the vector bundle $M_{V,L} := \ker (V \otimes \mathcal{O}_C \to L)$. In particular, the second named author and L. Stoppino conjecture that, for a complete linear system $|L|$, linear (semi)stability is equivalent to slope (semi)stability of $M_V$, and the first and third named authors proved that this conjecture holds for hyperelliptic and for generic curves. In this work we provide a counterexample to this conjecture on any smooth plane curve of degree $7$.

Abstract:Simple-minded systems in stable module categories are defined by orthogonality and generating properties so that the images of the simple modules under a stable equivalence form such a system. Simple-minded systems are shown to be invariant under stable equivalences; thus the set of all simple-minded systems is an invariant of a stable module category. The simple-minded systems of several classes of algebras are described and connections to the Auslander-Reiten conjecture are pointed out.

Abstract:Given a Noetherian graded domain $R = \bigoplus_{i\ge 0} R_i$ of dimension $d\geq 2$ with $\dim(R_0) \geq 1$, we prove that any unimodular row of length $d+1$ in $R$ can be completed to the first row of an invertible matrix $\alpha$ such that $\alpha$ is homotopic to the identity matrix. Utilizing this result we establish that if $I \subset R$ is an ideal satisfying $\mu(I/I^2) = \text{ht}(I) = d$, then any set of generators of $I/I^2$ lifts to a set of generators of $I$, where $\mu(-)$ denotes the minimal number of generators. We improve the injective stability of $\text{K}_1(R)$. Finally, we prove that for any projective $R$-module $P$ of rank $d$ if the Quillen ideal of $P$ is non-zero, then $P$ is cancellative.

Abstract:We sketch recent interactions between model theory and a roughly 150-year old study of analytic functions involving complex analysis, algebraic topology, and number theory, centered in canonicity of universal covers. Towards this goal we discuss in a systematic and unified way several examples indicating the main ideas of the proofs and the necessary changes in method for different situations: exponential covers, modular and Shimura curves, Shimura and abelian varieties, and coherent families of smooth covers.

Abstract:This work proposes a mathematical approach that (re)defines a property of Machine Learning models named stability and determines sufficient conditions to validate it. Machine Learning models are represented as functions, and the characteristics in scope depend upon the domain of the function, what allows us to adopt topological and metric spaces theory as a basis. Finally, this work provides some equivalences useful to prove and test stability in Machine Learning models. The results suggest that whenever stability is aligned with the notion of function smoothness, then the stability of Machine Learning models primarily depends upon certain topological, measurable properties of the classification sets within the ML model domain.

Abstract:We consider general structures where formulas have truth values in the real unit interval as in continuous model theory, but whose predicates and functions need not be uniformly continuous with respect to a distance predicate. Every general structure can be expanded to a pre-metric structure by adding a distance predicate that is a uniform limit of formulas. Moreover, that distance predicate is unique up to uniform equivalence. We use this to extend the central notions in the model theory of metric structures to general structures, and show that many model-theoretic results from the literature about metric structures have natural analogues for general structures.

Abstract:A first-order theory is Noetherian with respect to the collection of formulae $\mathcal{F}$ if every definable set is a Boolean combination of instances of formulae in $\mathcal{F}$ and the topology whose subbasis of closed sets is the collection of instances of arbitrary formulae in $\mathcal{F}$ is Noetherian. Noetherianity is a strengthening of equationality, which itself implies stability. We show the Noetherianity of the theory of proper pairs of algebraically closed fields in any characteristic.

Abstract:We find a strong separation between two natural families of simple rank one theories in Keisler's order: the theories $T_\mathfrak{m}$ reflecting graph sequences, which witness that Keisler's order has the maximum number of classes, and the theories $T_{n,k}$, which are the higher-order analogues of the triangle-free random graph. The proof involves building Boolean algebras and ultrafilters "by hand" to satisfy certain model theoretically meaningful chain conditions. This may be seen as advancing a line of work going back through Kunen's construction of good ultrafilters in ZFC using families of independent functions. We conclude with a theorem on flexible ultrafilters, and open questions.
