Abstract:Programming language definitions assign formal meaning to complete programs. Programmers, however, spend a substantial amount of time interacting with incomplete programs -- programs with holes, type inconsistencies and binding inconsistencies -- using tools like program editors and live programming environments (which interleave editing and evaluation). Semanticists have done comparatively little to formally characterize (1) the static and dynamic semantics of incomplete programs; (2) the actions available to programmers as they edit and inspect incomplete programs; and (3) the behavior of editor services that suggest likely edit actions to the programmer based on semantic information extracted from the incomplete program being edited, and from programs that the system has encountered in the past. As such, each tool designer has largely been left to develop their own ad hoc heuristics. This paper serves as a vision statement for a research program that seeks to develop these "missing" semantic foundations. Our hope is that these contributions, which will take the form of a series of simple formal calculi equipped with a tractable metatheory, will guide the design of a variety of current and future interactive programming tools, much as various lambda calculi have guided modern language designs. Our own research will apply these principles in the design of Hazel, an experimental live lab notebook programming environment designed for data science tasks. We plan to co-design the Hazel language with the editor so that we can explore concepts such as edit-time semantic conflict resolution mechanisms and mechanisms that allow library providers to install library-specific editor services.
Teaching the art of functional programming using automated grading (experience report)

Abstract:Online programming platforms have immense potential to improve students' educational experience. They make programming more accessible, as no installation is required; and automatic grading facilities provide students with immediate feedback on their code, allowing them to to fix bugs and address errors in their understanding right away. However, these graders tend to focus heavily on the functional correctness of a solution, neglecting other aspects of students' code and thereby causing students to miss out on a significant amount of valuable feedback. In this paper, we recount our experience in using the Learn-OCaml online programming platform to teach functional programming in a second-year university course on programming languages and paradigms. Moreover, we explore how to leverage Learn-OCaml's automated grading infrastructure to make it easy to write more expressive graders that give students feedback on properties of their code beyond simple input/output correctness, in order to effectively teach elements of functional programming style. In particular, we describe our extensions to the Learn-OCaml platform that evaluate students on test quality and code style. By providing these tools and a suite of our own homework problems and associated graders, we aim to promote functional programming education, enhance students' educational experience, and make teaching and learning typed functional programming more accessible to instructors and students alike, in our community and beyond.

Abstract:The architecture of a computer determines what programs are allowed to do and what the microarchitecture should implement. As security and safety become critical needs for an emergent class of highly-connected devices, the way computations are performed becomes a central concern, as it can directly allow or hamper the development of malicious software. In this work we investigate functional programming as an alternative foundation for computer architectures, starting from a formal calculus of structured combinators up to its implications on software and hardware design, resulting in the open-source, purely-functional fun instruction-set architecture.

Abstract:In a pattern-oriented software design process, design decisions are made by selecting and instantiating appropriate patterns, and composing them together. In our previous work, we enabled these decisions to be formalized by defining a set of operators on patterns with which instantiations and compositions can be represented. In this article, we investigate the algebraic properties of these operators. We provide and prove a complete set of algebraic laws so that equivalence between pattern expressions can be proven. Furthermore, we define an always-terminating normalization of pattern expression to a canonical form which is unique modulo equivalence in first-order logic. By a case study, the pattern-oriented design of an extensible request-handling framework, we demonstrate two practical applications of the algebraic framework. First, we can prove the correctness of a finished design with respect to the design decisions made and the formal specification of the patterns. Second, we can even derive the design from these components.

Abstract:Current garbage collectors leave a lot of garbage uncollected because they conservatively approximate liveness by reachability from program variables. In this paper, we describe a sequence of static analyses that takes as input a program written in a first-order, eager functional programming language, and finds at each program point the references to objects that are guaranteed not to be used in the future. Such references are made null by a transformation pass. If this makes the object unreachable, it can be collected by the garbage collector. This causes more garbage to be collected, resulting in fewer collections. Additionally, for those garbage collectors which scavenge live objects, it makes each collection faster. The interesting aspects of our method are both in the identification of the analyses required to solve the problem and the way they are carried out. We identify three different analyses -- liveness, sharing and accessibility. In liveness and sharing analyses, the function definitions are analyzed independently of the calling context. This is achieved by using a variable to represent the unknown context of the function being analyzed and setting up constraints expressing the effect of the function with respect to the variable. The solution of the constraints is a summary of the function that is parameterized with respect to a calling context and is used to analyze function calls. As a result we achieve context sensitivity at call sites without analyzing the function multiple number of times.

Live Functional Programming with Typed Holes

Abstract:This paper develops a dynamic semantics for incomplete functional programs, starting from the static semantics developed in recent work on Hazelnut. We model incomplete functional programs as expressions with holes, with empty holes standing for missing expressions or types, and non-empty holes operating as membranes around static and dynamic type inconsistencies. Rather than aborting when evaluation encounters any of these holes as in some existing systems, evaluation proceeds around holes, tracking the closure around each hole instance as it flows through the remainder of the program. Editor services can use the information in these hole closures to help the programmer develop and confirm their mental model of the behavior of the complete portions of the program as they decide how to fill the remaining holes. Hole closures also enable a fill-and-resume operation that avoids the need to restart evaluation after edits that amount to hole filling. Formally, the semantics borrows machinery from both gradual type theory (which supplies the basis for handling unfilled type holes) and contextual modal type theory (which supplies a logical basis for hole closures), combining these and developing additional machinery necessary to continue evaluation past holes while maintaining type safety. We have mechanized the metatheory of the core calculus, called Hazelnut Live, using the Agda proof assistant. We have also implemented these ideas into the Hazel programming environment. The implementation inserts holes automatically, following the Hazelnut edit action calculus, to guarantee that every editor state has some (possibly incomplete) type. Taken together with this paper's type safety property, the result is a proof-of-concept live programming environment where rich dynamic feedback is truly available without gaps, i.e. for every reachable editor state.

Effects Without Monads: Non-determinism -- Back to the Meta Language

Abstract:We reflect on programming with complicated effects, recalling an undeservingly forgotten alternative to monadic programming and checking to see how well it can actually work in modern functional languages. We adopt and argue the position of factoring an effectful program into a first-order effectful DSL with a rich, higher-order 'macro' system. Not all programs can be thus factored. Although the approach is not general-purpose, it does admit interesting programs. The effectful DSL is likewise rather problem-specific and lacks general-purpose monadic composition, or even functions. On the upside, it expresses the problem elegantly, is simple to implement and reason about, and lends itself to non-standard interpretations such as code generation (compilation) and abstract interpretation. A specialized DSL is liable to be frequently extended; the experience with the tagless-final style of DSL embedding shown that the DSL evolution can be made painless, with the maximum code reuse. We illustrate the argument on a simple but representative example of a rather complicated effect -- non-determinism, including committed choice. Unexpectedly, it turns out we can write interesting non-deterministic programs in an ML-like language just as naturally and elegantly as in the functional-logic language Curry -- and not only run them but also statically analyze, optimize and compile. The richness of the Meta Language does, in reality, compensate for the simplicity of the effectful DSL. The key idea goes back to the origins of ML as the Meta Language for the Edinburgh LCF theorem prover. Instead of using ML to build theorems, we now build (DSL) programs.

Abstract:Functional languages with strong static type systems have beneficial properties to help ensure program correctness and reliability. Surprisingly, their practical significance in applications is low relative to other languages lacking in those dimensions. In this paper, the programs-as-proofs analogy is taken seriously to gain speculative insights by analysis of creation habits in the proof-centric discipline of mathematics. Viewed in light of this analogy, a sampling of mathematicians' attitudes towards formal proof suggests that the crucial role of intuition and experimentation in programming tasks may be under appreciated, hinting at a possible explanation of the challenges rigorously disciplined languages face in practical applications.

Abstract:Program review is an effective means for enhancing software quality. In this paper we describe the design of a software tool to support our proposed "function-path" approach to reviewing programs based on SOFL specifications. The approach includes four steps: (1) deriving all the functional scenarios from a formal specification, (2) generating all the necessary program paths in a program, (3) establishing the mapping between the functional scenarios in the specification and the program paths as implemented functions in the program, and (4) reviewing all the program paths against their functional scenarios in the specification.

Abstract:Paisley is an extensible lightweight embedded domain-specific language for nondeterministic pattern matching in Java. Using simple APIs and programming idioms, it brings the power of functional-logic processing of arbitrary data objects to the Java platform, without constraining the underlying object-oriented semantics. Here we present an extension to the Paisley framework that adds pattern-based control flow. It exploits recent additions to the Java language, namely functional interfaces and lambda expressions, for an explicit and transparent continuation-passing style approach to control. We evaluate the practical impact of the novel features on a real-world case study that reengineers a third-party open-source project to use Paisley in place of conventional object-oriented data query idioms. We find the approach viable for incremental refactoring of legacy code, with significant qualitative improvements regarding separation of concerns, clarity and intentionality, thus making for easier code understanding, testing and debugging.
Proving and Disproving Equivalence of Functional Programming Assignments

Abstract:We present an automated approach to verify the correctness of programming assignments, such as the ones that arise in a functional programming course. Our approach takes as input student submissions and reference solutions, and uses equivalence checking to automatically prove or disprove correctness of each submission. To be effective in the context of a real-world programming course, an automated grading system must be both robust, to support programs written in a variety of style, and scalable, to treat hundreds of submissions at once. We achieve robustness by handling recursion using functional induction and by handling auxiliary functions using function call matching. We achieve scalability using a clustering algorithm that leverages the transitivity of equivalence to discover intermediate reference solutions among student submissions. We implement our approach on top of the Stainless verification system, to support equivalence checking of Scala programs. We evaluate our system and its components on over 4000 programs drawn from a functional programming course and from the program equivalence checking literature; this is the largest such evaluation to date. We show that our system is capable of proving program correctness by generating inductive equivalence proofs, and providing counterexamples for incorrect programs, with a high success rate.

Abstracting Abstract Machines: A Systematic Approach to Higher-Order Program Analysis

Abstract:Predictive models are fundamental to engineering reliable software systems. However, designing conservative, computable approximations for the behavior of programs (static analyses) remains a difficult and error-prone process for modern high-level programming languages. What analysis designers need is a principled method for navigating the gap between semantics and analytic models: analysis designers need a method that tames the interaction of complex languages features such as higher-order functions, recursion, exceptions, continuations, objects and dynamic allocation. We contribute a systematic approach to program analysis that yields novel and transparently sound static analyses. Our approach relies on existing derivational techniques to transform high-level language semantics into low-level deterministic state-transition systems (with potentially infinite state spaces). We then perform a series of simple machine refactorings to obtain a sound, computable approximation, which takes the form of a non-deterministic state-transition systems with finite state spaces. The approach scales up uniformly to enable program analysis of realistic language features, including higher-order functions, tail calls, conditionals, side effects, exceptions, first-class continuations, and even garbage collection.

Teaching Functional Programmers Logic and Metatheory

Abstract:We present a novel approach for teaching logic and the metatheory of logic to students who have some experience with functional programming. We define concepts in logic as a series of functional programs in the language of the proof assistant Isabelle/HOL. This allows us to make notions which are often unclear in textbooks precise, to experiment with definitions by executing them, and to prove metatheoretical theorems in full detail. We have surveyed student perceptions of our teaching approach to determine its usefulness and found that students felt that our formalizations helped them understand concepts in logic, and that they experimented with them as a learning tool. However, the approach was not enough to make students feel confident in their abilities to design and implement their own formal systems. Further studies are needed to confirm and generalize the results of our survey, but our initial results seem promising.

Engaging, Large-Scale Functional Programming Education in Physical and Virtual Space

Abstract:Worldwide, computer science departments have experienced a dramatic increase in the number of student enrolments. Moreover, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic requires institutions to radically replace the traditional way of on-site teaching, moving interaction from physical to virtual space. We report on our strategies and experience tackling these issues as part of a Haskell-based functional programming and verification course, accommodating over 2000 students in the course of two semesters. Among other things, we fostered engagement with weekly programming competitions and creative homework projects, workshops with industry partners, and collaborative pair-programming tutorials. To offer such an extensive programme to hundreds of students, we automated feedback for programming as well as inductive proof exercises. We explain and share our tools and exercises so that they can be reused by other educators.

Abstract:The textbook by Doets and van Eijck puts the Haskell programming language systematically to work for presenting a major piece of logic and mathematics. The reader is taken through chapters on basic logic, proof recipes, sets and lists, relations and functions, recursion and co-recursion, the number systems, polynomials and power series, ending with Cantor's infinities. The book uses Haskell for the executable and strongly typed manifestation of various mathematical notions at the level of declarative programming. The book adopts a systematic but relaxed mathematical style (definition, example, exercise, ...); the text is very pleasant to read due to a small amount of anecdotal information, and due to the fact that definitions are fluently integrated in the running text. An important goal of the book is to get the reader acquainted with reasoning about programs.

Abstract:Spreadsheets are a widespread functional programming paradigm that offer liveness and directness of interaction. However, spreadsheets are notoriously error-prone and difficult to debug. To overcome this limitation and improve the expressive power of spreadsheets, we propose an extension to the spreadsheet paradigm in the form of sheet-defined lambdas – user-defined functions that abstract computations on the sheet. This concept was developed and deployed in our web-based spreadsheet application named Lattice. We evaluate this approach through a user study which compared the user experience of programming in a spreadsheet with and without lambdas, as well as the difference in performance between learner (N = 12) and experienced (N = 12) programmers. The study measured participant task performance (task time, success rate and number of errors) and the quality of their user experience of using Lattice (video recordings of use, interviews and questionnaire responses). Our findings indicate that programming with lambdas is not only more efficient than writing formulas in a conventional way, but also provides a rewarding hedonic experience. However, we found that learners perceived the concept of functional abstractions with lambdas as difficult to comprehend; while experienced programmers noted potential utilitarian advantages that aid in managing the complexity of a spreadsheet program. The results obtained in this work contribute to a better understanding of human-spreadsheet interaction and can inform the future design of user-friendly computational systems.
