Abstract:The textbook by Doets and van Eijck puts the Haskell programming language systematically to work for presenting a major piece of logic and mathematics. The reader is taken through chapters on basic logic, proof recipes, sets and lists, relations and functions, recursion and co-recursion, the number systems, polynomials and power series, ending with Cantor's infinities. The book uses Haskell for the executable and strongly typed manifestation of various mathematical notions at the level of declarative programming. The book adopts a systematic but relaxed mathematical style (definition, example, exercise, ...); the text is very pleasant to read due to a small amount of anecdotal information, and due to the fact that definitions are fluently integrated in the running text. An important goal of the book is to get the reader acquainted with reasoning about programs.

Abstract:Computability theory forms the foundation for much of theoretical computer science. Many of our great unsolved questions stem from the need to understand what problems can even be solved. The greatest question of computer science, P vs. NP, even sidesteps this entirely, asking instead how efficiently we can find solutions for the problems that we know are solvable. For many students both at the undergraduate and graduate level, a first exposure to computability theory follows a standard sequence on data structures and algorithms and students often marvel at the first results they see on undecidability - how could we possibly prove that we can never solve a problem? This book, in contrast with other books that are often used as first exposures to computability, finite automata, Turing machines, and the like, focuses very specifically on the notion of what is computable and how computability theory, as a science unto itself, fits into the grander scheme. The book is appropriate for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in computer science or mathematics who are interested in theoretical computer science. Robič sidesteps the standard theoretical computer science progression - understanding finite automata and pushdown automata before moving into Turing machines - by setting the stage with Hilbert's program and mathematical prerequisites before introducing the Turing machine absent the usual prerequisites, and then introducing advanced topics often absent in introductory texts. Most chapters are relatively short and contain problem sets, making it appropriate for both a classroom text or for self-study.

Static and Dynamic Verification of OCaml Programs: The Gospel Ecosystem (Extended Version)

Abstract:We present our work on the collaborative use of dynamic and static analysis tools for the verification of software written in the OCaml language. We build upon Gospel, a specification language for OCaml that can be used both in dynamic and static analyses. We employ Ortac, for runtime assertion checking, and Cameleer and CFML for the deductive verification of OCaml code. We report on the use of such tools to build a case study of collaborative analysis of a non-trivial OCaml program. This shows how these tools nicely complement each others, while at the same highlights the differences when writing specification targeting dynamic or static analysis methods.

Abstract:In post-publication peer review, scientific contributions are first published in open-access forums, such as arXiv or other digital libraries, and are subsequently reviewed and possibly ranked and/or evaluated. Compared to the classical process of scientific publishing, in which review precedes publication, post-publication peer review leads to faster dissemination of ideas, and publicly-available reviews. The chief concern in post-publication reviewing consists in eliciting high-quality, insightful reviews from participants. We describe the mathematical foundations and structure of TrueReview, an open-source tool we propose to build in support of post-publication review. In TrueReview, the motivation to review is provided via an incentive system that promotes reviews and evaluations that are both truthful (they turn out to be correct in the long run) and informative (they provide significant new information). TrueReview organizes papers in venues, allowing different scientific communities to set their own submission and review policies. These venues can be manually set-up, or they can correspond to categories in well-known repositories such as arXiv. The review incentives can be used to form a reviewer ranking that can be prominently displayed alongside papers in the various disciplines, thus offering a concrete benefit to reviewers. The paper evaluations, in turn, reward the authors of the most significant papers, both via an explicit paper ranking, and via increased visibility in search.

Abstract:Online programming platforms have immense potential to improve students' educational experience. They make programming more accessible, as no installation is required; and automatic grading facilities provide students with immediate feedback on their code, allowing them to to fix bugs and address errors in their understanding right away. However, these graders tend to focus heavily on the functional correctness of a solution, neglecting other aspects of students' code and thereby causing students to miss out on a significant amount of valuable feedback. In this paper, we recount our experience in using the Learn-OCaml online programming platform to teach functional programming in a second-year university course on programming languages and paradigms. Moreover, we explore how to leverage Learn-OCaml's automated grading infrastructure to make it easy to write more expressive graders that give students feedback on properties of their code beyond simple input/output correctness, in order to effectively teach elements of functional programming style. In particular, we describe our extensions to the Learn-OCaml platform that evaluate students on test quality and code style. By providing these tools and a suite of our own homework problems and associated graders, we aim to promote functional programming education, enhance students' educational experience, and make teaching and learning typed functional programming more accessible to instructors and students alike, in our community and beyond.

Methodology

Abstract:This paper reviews some programming techniques in R that have proved useful, particularly for substantial projects. These include several versions of object-oriented programming, used in a large number of R packages. The review tries to clarify the origins and ideas behind the various versions, each of which is valuable in the appropriate context. R has also been strongly influenced by the ideas of functional programming and, in particular, by the desire to combine functional with object oriented programming. To clarify how this particular mix of ideas has turned out in the current R language and supporting software, the paper will first review the basic ideas behind object-oriented and functional programming, and then examine the evolution of R with these ideas providing context. Functional programming supports well-defined, defensible software giving reproducible results. Object-oriented programming is the mechanism par excellence for managing complexity while keeping things simple for the user. The two paradigms have been valuable in supporting major software for fitting models to data and numerous other statistical applications. The paradigms have been adopted, and adapted, distinctively in R. Functional programming motivates much of R but R does not enforce the paradigm. Object-oriented programming from a functional perspective differs from that used in non-functional languages, a distinction that needs to be emphasized to avoid confusion. R initially replicated the S language from Bell Labs, which in turn was strongly influenced by earlier program libraries. At each stage, new ideas have been added, but the previous software continues to show its influence in the design as well. Outlining the evolution will further clarify why we currently have this somewhat unusual combination of ideas.

Abstract:Good tools can bring mechanical verification to programs written in mainstream functional languages. We use hs-to-coq to translate significant portions of Haskell’s containers library into Coq, and verify it against specifications that we derive from a variety of sources including type class laws, the library’s test suite, and interfaces from Coq’s standard library. Our work shows that it is feasible to verify mature, widely-used, highly optimized, and unmodified Haskell code. We also learn more about the theory of weight-balanced trees, extend hs-to-coq to handle partiality, and – since we found no bugs – attest to the superb quality of well-tested functional code.

Abstract:We present the approach underlying a course on "Domain-Specific Languages of Mathematics", currently being developed at Chalmers in response to difficulties faced by third-year students in learning and applying classical mathematics (mainly real and complex analysis). The main idea is to encourage the students to approach mathematical domains from a functional programming perspective: to identify the main functions and types involved and, when necessary, to introduce new abstractions; to give calculational proofs; to pay attention to the syntax of the mathematical expressions; and, finally, to organise the resulting functions and types in domain-specific languages.

Auto-active Verification of Graph Algorithms, Written in OCaml

Abstract:Functional programming offers the perfect ground for building correct-by-construction software. Languages of such paradigm normally feature state-of-the-art type systems, good abstraction mechanisms, and well-defined execution models. We claim that all of these make software written in a functional language excellent targets for formal certification. Yet, somehow surprising, techniques such as deductive verification have been seldom applied to large-scale programs, written in mainstream functional languages. In this paper, we wish to address this situation and present the auto-active proof of realistic OCaml implementations. We choose implementations issued from the OCamlgraph library as our target, since this is both a large-scale and widely-used piece of OCaml code. We use Cameleer, a recently proposed tool for the deductive verification of OCaml programs, to conduct the proofs of the selected case studies. The vast majority of such proofs are completed fully-automatically, using SMT solvers, and when needed we can apply lightweight interactive proof inside the Why3 IDE (Cameleer translates an input program into an equivalent WhyML one, the language of the Why3 verification framework). To the best of our knowledge, these are the first mechanized, mostly-automated proofs of graph algorithms written in OCaml.

Abstract:Worldwide, computer science departments have experienced a dramatic increase in the number of student enrolments. Moreover, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic requires institutions to radically replace the traditional way of on-site teaching, moving interaction from physical to virtual space. We report on our strategies and experience tackling these issues as part of a Haskell-based functional programming and verification course, accommodating over 2000 students in the course of two semesters. Among other things, we fostered engagement with weekly programming competitions and creative homework projects, workshops with industry partners, and collaborative pair-programming tutorials. To offer such an extensive programme to hundreds of students, we automated feedback for programming as well as inductive proof exercises. We explain and share our tools and exercises so that they can be reused by other educators.
