Abstract:In a "naive" attempt to create algebraic quantum field theories on the circle, we obtain a family of unitary representations of Thompson's groups T and F for any subfactor. The Thompson group elements are the "local scale transformations" of the theory. In a simple case the coefficients of the representations are polynomial invariants of links. We show that all links arise and introduce new "oriented" subgroups $\overrightarrow F <F$ and $\overrightarrow T< T$ which allow us to produce all \emph{oriented} knots and links.

Abstract:We continue to study Pythagorean unitary representation of Richard Thompson's groups $F$, $T$ and $V$ that are built from a single isometry from a Hilbert space to its double. By developing powerful diagrammatically based techniques we show that each such representation splits into a diffuse and an atomic parts. We previously proved that the diffuse part is Ind-mixing: it does not contain induced representations of finite-dimensional ones. We fully decompose the atomic part: the building blocks are monomial representations arising from a precise family of parabolic subgroups of $F$.

Abstract:We introduce the Pythagorean dimension: a natural number (or infinity) for all representations of the Cuntz algebra and certain unitary representations of the Richard Thompson groups called Pythagorean. For each natural number d we completely classify (in a functorial manner) all such representations using finite dimensional linear algebra. Their irreducible classes form a real manifold of dimension $2d^2+1$ playing the role of a moduli space. Apart from a finite disjoint union of circles, each point of the manifold corresponds to an irreducible unitary representation of Thompson's group F (which extends to the other Thompson groups and the Cuntz algebra) that is not monomial. The remaining circles provide monomial representations which we previously fully described and classified. We translate in our language a large number of previous results in the literature. We explain how our techniques extend them.

Abstract:In his work on representations of Thompson's group $F$, Vaughan Jones defined and studied the $3$-\emph{colorable subgroup} $\mathcal{F}$ of $F$. Later, Ren showed that it is isomorphic with the Brown-Thompson group $F_4$. In this paper we continue with the study of the $3$-colorable subgroup and prove that the quasi-regular representation of $F$ associated with the $3$-colorable subgroup is irreducible. We show moreover that the preimage of $\mathcal{F}$ under a certain injective endomorphism of $F$ is contained in three (explicit) maximal subgroups of $F$ of infinite index. These subgroups are different from the previously known infinite index maximal subgroups of $F$, namely the parabolic subgroups that fix a point in $(0,1)$, (up to isomorphism) the Jones' oriented subgroup $\vec{F}$, and the explicit examples found by Golan.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical groups GL(n), U(n), O(n) or Sp(2n), over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero. It is well known that the contragredient of an irreducible admissible smooth representation of G is isomorphic to a twist of it by an automorphism of G. We prove that similar results hold for double covers of G that occur in the study of local theta correspondences.

Abstract:For every integer n ≥ 2 , we consider a family { π w } w ∈ { 0 , 1 , ... , n − 1 } N of irreducible representations of the Cuntz algebra O n . All these representations (except one) are shown to be equivalent to those arising from the orbits of the interval map dynamical system ( I , f ) with f ⁢ ( x ) = n ⁢ x ⁢ ( mod ⁢ 1 ) . We consider the embeddings V = V 2 ⊂ V n ⊂ O n of the Thompson group V in the Higman–Thompson group V n obtained by Birget and then from V n into O n which was obtained independently by Birget and Nekrashevych. The restriction of π w to V n is still irreducible; however, the restriction of π w to V is no longer irreducible, and we obtain the corresponding irreducible decomposition in terms of quasi-regular representations.

Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group with an involution σ on it. Let H be an open subgroup of Gσ with a character χ on it. Associated to a “theta stable”, “σ-split” parabolic subalgebra, and using the Zuckerman functor, we construct representations of G together with χ-equivariant linear functionals on them. We apply this construction to prove a non-vanishing hypothesis of H. Grobner and A. Raghuram in the study of algebraicity of critical L-values.

Abstract:We continue to study Pythagorean unitary representation of Richard Thompson's groups $F,T,V$ and their extension to the Cuntz(-Dixmier) algebra. Any linear isometry from a Hilbert space to its direct sum square produces such. We focus on those arising from a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. We show that they decompose as a direct sum of a so-called diffuse part and an atomic part. We previously proved that the diffuse part is Ind-mixing: it does not contain induced representations of finite-dimensional ones. In this article, we fully describe the atomic part: it is a finite direct sum of irreducible monomial representations arising from a precise family of parabolic subgroups.

Abstract:The Thompson group F has a natural unitary representation on $H=L^2[0,1]$. With some projections, we construct a family of projective unitary representations on a Fermionic Fock space associated with $H$. It comes from the representation of the associated CAR algebra. After $H^2(F;S^1)$ is obtained, we mainly study whether any of these projective unitary representations can be lifted to an ordinary one. We will discuss the lifting problem of these projective representations.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, reductive group over a non-archimedean local field $F$. Let $\breve F$ be the completion of the maximal unramified extension of $F$ contained in a separable closure $F_s$. In this article, we construct a Tits group of the affine Weyl group of $G(F)$ when the derived subgroup of $G_{\breve F}$ does not contain a simple factor of unitary type. If $G$ is a quasi-split ramified odd unitary group, we show that there always exist representatives in $G(F)$ of affine simple reflections that satisfy Coxeter relations (which is weaker than asking for the existence of a Tits group). If $G = U_{2r}, r \geq 3,$ is a quasi-split ramified even unitary group, we show that there don't even exist representatives in $G(F)$ of the affine simple reflections that satisfy Coxeter relations.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field containing the full group of $n^{th}$ roots of 1 and let $ \widetilde{SL_2(F)}$ be the $n$-fold cover of $SL_2(F)$ constructed by Kubota. In this paper we compute the dimension of the space of Whittaker functionals of the two irreducible summands inside a reducible unitary genuine principal series representation of $\widetilde{SL_2(F)}$. We also show how these dimensions change when the Whittaker character is modified. As an application we determine the action of the twisted Kazhdan-Patterson $n$-fold cover of $GL_2(F)$ on the two summands. We emphasize that our main results addresses both ramified and unramified representations and do not rely on the assumption that the cover is tame.

Abstract:We study irreducible restrictions from modules over symmetric groups to subgroups. We get reduction results which substantially restrict the classes of subgroups and modules for which this is possible. Such results are known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. This work fits into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.

On the irreducibility and weakly homogeneity of a class of operators

Abstract:To construct more homogeneous operators, B. Bagchi and G. Misra in \cite{d} introduced the operator $\left(\begin{smallmatrix} T_0 & T_0-T_1 \\ 0 & T_1\\ \end{smallmatrix}\right)$ and proved that when $T_0$ and $T_1$ are homogeneous operators with the same unitary representation $U(g)$, it is homogeneous with associated representation $U(g)\oplus U(g)$. At the same time, they asked an open question, is the constructed operator irreducible? A. Kor$\acute{a}$nyi in \cite{e} showed that when the (1,2)-entry of the matrix is $\alpha(T_0-T_1)$, $\alpha\in\mathbb{C}$ the above result is also valid, and their unitary equivalence class depends only on $|\alpha|$. In this case, he and S. Hazra \cite{f} gave a large class of irreducible homogeneous bilateral $2\times2$ block shifts, respectively, which are mutually unitarily inequivalent for $\alpha>0$. In this note, we generalize the construction to $T=\left(\begin{smallmatrix} T_0 & XT_1-T_0X \\ 0 & T_1\\ \end{smallmatrix}\right)$ and provide some sufficient conditions for its irreducibility. We also find that for the above-mentioned $T_0,T_1$ and non-scalar operator $X$, $T$ is weakly homogeneous rather than homogeneous. So the weak homogeneity problem related to $T$ is investigated.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that the Thompson groups $T$ and $V$ are not inner amenable. In particular, their group von Neumann algebras do not have property $\Gamma$. Moreover, we prove that if the reduced group $C^\ast$-algebra of $T$ is simple, then the Thompson group $F$ is non-amenable. Furthermore, we give a few new equivalent characterizations of amenability of $F$.

Abstract:We study the planar 3-colorablesubgroup of Thompson's group F and its even part . The latter is obtained by cutting with a finite index subgroup of F isomorphic to F, namely the rectangular subgroup . We show that the even part of the planar 3-colorable subgroup admits a description in terms of stabilisers of suitable subsets of dyadic rationals. As a consequence is closed in the sense of Golan and Sapir. We then study three quasi-regular representations associated with : two are shown to be irreducible and one to be reducible.

The Taylor-Wiles method for reductive groups

Abstract:We construct a local deformation problem for residual Galois representations $\bar{\rho}$ valued in an arbitrary reductive group $\hat{G}$ which we use to develop a variant of the Taylor-Wiles method. Our generalization allows Taylor-Wiles places for which the image of Frobenius is semisimple, a weakening of the regular semisimple constraint imposed previously in the literature. We introduce the notion of $\hat{G}$-adequate subgroup, our corresponding 'big image' condition. When $\hat{G}$ is a simply connected simple group of type $\mathrm{C}$ or of exceptional type and $\hat{G} \to \mathrm{GL}_n$ is a faithful irreducible representation of minimal dimension, we show that a subgroup is $\hat{G}$-adequate if it is $\mathrm{GL}_n$-irreducible and the residue characteristic is sufficiently large. We apply our ideas to the case $\hat{G} = \mathrm{GSp}_4$ and prove a modularity lifting theorem for abelian surfaces over a totally real field $F$ which holds under weaker hypotheses than in the work of Boxer-Calegari-Gee-Pilloni. We deduce some modularity results for elliptic curves over quadratic extensions of $F$.

Abstract:We classify globally irreducible representations of alternating groups and double covers of symmetric and alternating groups. In order to achieve this classification we also completely characterise irreducible representations of such groups which reduce almost homogeneously in every characteristic. This also allows us to classify irreducible representations that remain irreducible in every characteristic. In particular we show that, apart from finitely many exceptions, for any of these three questions such representations are either $1$-dimensional or basic spin representations.
