Abstract:Cognitive diagnostic assessment (CDA) has been developed rapidly to provide fine-grained diagnostic feedback on students' subskills and to provide insights on remedial instructions in specific domains. To date, most cognitive diagnostic studies on reading tests have focused on retrofitting a single booklet from a large-scale assessment (e.g., PISA and PIRLS). Critical issues in CDA involve the scarcity of research to develop diagnostic tests and the lack of reliability and validity evidence. This study explored the development and validation of the Diagnostic Chinese Reading Comprehension Assessment (DCRCA) for primary students under the CDA framework. Reading attributes were synthesized based on a literature review, the national curriculum criteria, the results of expert panel judgments, and student think-aloud protocols. Then, the tentative attributes were used to construct three booklets of reading comprehension items for 2-6 graders at three key stages. The assessment was administered to a large population of students (N = 21,466) in grades 2-6 from 20 schools in a district of Changchun City, China. Q-matrices were compared and refined using the model-data fit and an empirical validation procedure, and five representative cognitive diagnostic models (CDMs) were compared for optimal performance. The fit indices suggested that a six-attribute structure and the G-DINA model were best fitted for the reading comprehension assessment. In addition, diagnostic reliability, construct, internal and external validity results were provided, supporting CDM classifications as reliable, accurate, and useful. Such diagnostic information could be utilized by students, teachers, and administrators of reading programs and instructions.
Development and validation of the Thai version of MNREAD acuity charts

Abstract:Purpose: To develop and validate MNREAD acuity charts in the Thai language (MNREAD-TH). Methods: In total, 180 Thai sentences were generated using words specific to the primary 1-3 students. Each sentence contained 60 characters divided into three lines with even left and right margins and was evaluated by instructors in the education program in Thai. The selected 118 sentences were tested in 20 adults and 20 children by measuring reading time and recording the errors. Sentences with extremely high or low mean reading speeds were excluded. The remaining sentences were selected for contributing to the MNREAD-TH charts. For validation, the charts were tested in another 20 normal-sighted adult groups. Results: In total, 118 sentences were tested on 20 adults (range: 23-58 years) and 20 primary school students (age: 8-9 years). The mean (SD) reading speeds in adult and children's groups were 134.09 (12.45) and 71.33 (10.77) words/min (wpm), respectively. After removing the sentences that deviated by ±1 SD from the mean reading speed, repeatedly had difficulty words, and had low subjective scoring, 60 matched sentences between the groups were selected to develop three versions of the MNREAD-TH chart. The intraclass correlation coefficients between charts were 0.85 for reading acuity, 0.94 for maximum reading speed, and 0.79 for critical print size. Conclusion: The MNREAD-TH charts can be reliably used for evaluating reading performance in Thai people for both children and adults with either normal sight or low vision. These charts are standardized and helpful in clinical trials involving reading.

Abstract:To investigate the efficacy of the Korean version of the Minnesota low vision reading chart. A Korean version consisting of 38 items was prepared based on the MNREAD acuity chart developed by the University of Minnesota. A linguist composed the representative sentences, each containing nine words from second and third grade levels of elementary school. Reading ability was measured for 20–35-year-old subjects with normal visual acuity (corrected visual acuity of logMAR 0.0 or better). The maximum reading speed (words per minute [wpm]) for healthy participants, reading acuity (smallest detectable font size), and critical print size (smallest font size without reduction of reading speed) were analyzed. The average age of the subjects was 28.3 ± 2.6 years (male:female ratio, 4:16). The average reading time for 38 sentences was 3.66 ± 0.69 s, with no differences in the average maximum reading speed between sentences (p = 0.836). The maximum reading speed was 174.2 ± 29.3 and 175.4 ± 27.8 in the right and left eye, respectively. Reading acuity was measured as logMAR 0.0 or better in 80% of the cases. All subjects showed a critical print size of 0.2 logMAR or better. The overall reading ability can be measured using the Korean version of the MNREAD acuity chart, thereby making it useful in measuring the reading ability of those with Korean as their native language.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to transpose the printed Brazilian Children's Anxiety Questionnaire (CAQ BR) into a 2D digital format, validate it with nurses and hospitalized children, and analyze the association between the printed and 2D digital format versions. Design and method This is a descriptive and multicentric study, conducted from 2021 to 2022 on working in pediatric care at two hospitals in Brazil. The nurses analyzed the printed and digital instruments and subsequently applied them to a child and proposed suggestions. A cutoff score of 0.80 on the content validity index was used; items that scored an average lower than the CVI in the study were adequate. Eighty children responded to the questionnaires sequentially according to the randomization table. A 90% agreement rate was used. Results The digital instrument was validated in content by 51 experts, with a CVI of 0.95. Face validation data for 80 children (mean age = 7.9 years) shows a 90% agreement rate. The intraclass correlation index for the general score was 0.87 and 95% CI (0.79–0.91), which shows good stability of the children's responses in both questionnaires. In addition, 59% ( n = 47) of the children reported a preference for the digital questionnaire. Conclusions The digital CAQ BR can be used as an audiovisual instrument by nurses when implementing the systematization of nursing care in pediatrics. Practical implications The digital 2D version was successfully applied and can be used in hospitals to measure children's self-reported anxiety.

Abstract:Purpose: To continue the validation process of the Decoding Development Monitoring Protocol (PRADE) in software format in the validity evidence stage based on response processes. Methods: 250 individuals participated in this study, 125 individuals from private schools and 125 individuals from public schools. The assessment was carried out in person using the software that hosts the instrument's tasks, which are organized into decoding linguistically balanced words and non-words, respecting the decoding rules of Brazilian Portuguese. The software prepares an individual performance report for each participant, counting the decoding time for each stimulus, as well as the number of words decoded correctly. The data is organized considering the correct decoding time of the stimuli, decoding accuracy and percentage of correct answers. All data underwent statistical analysis using SPSS software. Results: The data indicated an important effect of the length of words and non-words on public and private school students. Furthermore, it was possible to observe the evolution of decoding, depending on the school year, in all the variables studied. In both groups, a strong influence of non-words on student performance throughout Elementary School I was observed. Conclusion: The data indicate validity in the analysis of response processes, since it was possible to adequately characterize the performance of school children public and private throughout Elementary School I, characterizing each group, as well as their differences according to the advancement of schooling.
Revised Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) - Brazilian version

Abstract:Objective: To translate and adapt to Brazilian Portuguese the Revised Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET), in both paper-and-pencil and computerized versions. The RMET is a well-accepted instrument for assessment of Theory of Mind (ToM), an important component of social cognition. Methods: Following a guideline for translation of material for clinical populations, this study had three main phases: 1) formal translation and semantic adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese; 2) an acceptability trial with health professionals as judges evaluating picture-word matching; and 3) a trial using the paper-and-pencil and computerized versions (experiments built in E-Prime 2.0.10 software) with healthy participants to test whether the instrument has similar outputs to those expected in versions in other languages. Results: RMET was adequately adapted to Brazilian Portuguese. This version showed acceptability and outputs similar to versions of the instrument in other languages, including the original one. We kept the same number of images as the original English version. Conclusions: Considering the scarcity of cognitive assessment instruments adequately adapted to Portuguese and the importance of social cognition in many psychiatric disorders, this work adds an important resource to Brazilian research and is administrable in both paper-and-pencil and computerized versions.

Abstract:Abstract Background Age is the most important risk factor for develop dementia, and the recommendation is that older adults are cognitively tested to detect impairment in the initial stage for adequate treatment. The demand for the care of these older adults is great, drawing attention to the need for rapid tests, with good accuracy and simple application to identify cognitive impairment. Objective To develop and validate the Brazilian Mini-Addenbrooke Cognitive Examination (M-ACE BR) as a short screening test for cognitive impairment in older adults. Methods The M-ACE BR was developed using the Mokken scaling analysis in 352 participants (cognitively unimpaired [CU] = 232, cognitive impairment no dementia [CIND] = 82; and dementia = 38) and validated in an independent sample of 117 participants (CU = 25; CIND = 88; and dementia = 4). Results The Mokken scaling analysis derived 9 items (spatial orientation, anterograde memory, retrograde memory, delayed recall, recognition [name and address], letter verbal fluency, repetition of 4 words, naming of 10 items, and comprehension) with a maximum score of 51 points and an average duration time of 7 minutes. The cut-off score ≤ 43/51 for CIND had a sensitivity of 59.09% and a specificity of 80%. For a screening test in which sensitivity is prioritized for further investigation, we suggest using a cutoff of ≤ 47 (sensitivity 85.23% and specificity 24%), maintaining a good positive predictive value (79.8%). Conclusion The M-ACE BR is a brief and adequate instrument to detect cognitive impairment in older Brazilian adults. However, screening for CIND and for different educational levels should be further explored.

Abstract:Background: Cognitive assessment and the early detection of cognitive impairments have been enhanced by the use of remote digital solutions. The Brain on Track® is one of these digital solutions used in clinical practice for online screening and monitoring of cognitive functioning. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the validity and reliability of the Brain on Track® computerized test on a tablet device in adults. Methods: A community sample of 54 young adults, 51 middle-aged adults, and 50 older adults were invited to attend in two assessment sessions. The first session included data collection on sociodemographic data, user digital literacy, Brain on Track® on the computer and on the tablet device, and usability from the user and moderator perspective. The second session included the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Questionnaire (MoCA) and a second completion of the Brain on Track® on tablet to assess the criterion validity and test-retest reliability. Hypothesis testing was used to assess construct validity. Results: A weak to moderate correlation was found between the Brain on Track® tablet score and the MoCA. The ICC was 0.72, 0.84, and 0.79, and Cronbach's alpha was 0.84, 0.83, and 0.89 in young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults, respectively. Conclusions: This study suggested that the Brain on Track® administered using a tablet device has criterion validity, particularly in middle-aged and older adults, and internal consistency and test-retest reliability in adults of any age group.
Preliminary Adaptation of Motor Tests to Evaluate Fine Motor Skills Associated with Mathematical Skills in Preschoolers

Abstract:Mathematics is the subject in which many school-age children reveal difficulties. The literature has shown that fine motor skills, namely fine motor coordination and visuomotor integration, have been more robustly associated with mathematical performance. Studies have shown the importance that instruments have to evaluate these skills, however, the characteristics of these instruments do not fit the reality of kindergartens, they are usually time consuming and expensive and are usually administered by specialists. Thus, the main objective of this study was to identify, select, adapt and validate motor tests to evaluate fine motor skills associated with mathematical skills to allow the kindergarten teachers to apply them simultaneously to the class, with few material resources, in a short period of time and without the need for a lot of training to apply, score and classify. For this purpose, firstly, it was necessary to understand the main difficulties highlighted by kindergarten teachers regarding the use of instruments to evaluate fine motor skills and, thus, elaborate criteria to identify and select the tests that best fit the reality of kindergartens. The test identified, selected and adapted to evaluate fine motor coordination was threading beads from the Movement Evaluation Battery for Children, 2nd Edition. The main adaptation of the test was related to time, that is, instead of counting the time it takes the child to string the total number of cubes on the string, we counted the number of cubes the child strung on the string in a pre-defined time. To evaluate visual-motor integration, the test identified, selected and adapted was the Visual-Motor Integration (6th Edition) test. The main adaptation was related to material resources, that is, it will be possible to apply the test using only one sheet per child instead of the seven suggested by the original test. After the preliminary adaptation of the tests, their validation was performed by means of the degree of reliability (test-retest) and predictive validity. The results indicated that the adapted tests presented an excellent degree of reliability (>0.9) and could therefore be used to administer them simultaneously to the class group. The adapted Visual-Motor Integration test seems to be the most suitable one to be used by kindergarten teachers, in a classroom context, to simultaneously evaluate students' fine motor skills and associate their results with mathematical skills.
The Assessment of the Psychomotor Profile in Children: Preliminary Psychometric Analysis of the Portuguese Version of the Batterie d’Evaluation des Fonctions Neuropsychomotrices de L’enfant (NPmot.pt)

Abstract:Psychomotor assessment is an expanding research field. A deep knowledge of the typical development will allow for better child-centered planning. Due to the scarcity of psychomotor assessment instruments validated in Portugal, our research aims to perform a preliminary analysis of the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Battery for Neuropsychomotor functions evaluation (NPmot.pt). The NPmot.pt was translated and adapted to the Portuguese language/culture and applied to 200 children, 4–12 years old (6 y 10 m ± 0 y 4 m), with (n = 150) and without developmental disorders, attending regular school. For content validity, nine experts classified all items according to their relevance, clarity, simplicity and ambiguity. All indexes (IVC > 0.78) pointed out the representativeness of indicators, corroborated by experts proportion agreement (>0.42), and Cohen’s kappa scores (0.02 > k 0.45) and temporal reliability (test-retest technique, 0.45 > r r < 0.92); exploratory factor analysis pointed out an eight-factor solution, explaining 88.5% of the total variance. For discriminant validity, we conducted a comparative study between children with and without developmental disorders that revealed significant differences (p < 0.05). The NPmot.pt seems to confirm validity and reliability for Portugal; however, more studies are needed.

A calculation and number processing battery for clinical application in illiterates and semi-literates

Abstract:Ten simple tasks assessing counting, number processing, elementary calculation and quantity estimation were proposed to 122 normal Brazilian adults aged between 18 and 58 years with 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 years of education. Tasks such as counting the number of elements in small sets were almost perfectly mastered by these illiterate or semi-literate normal subjects; however in other tasks (e.g. those assessing knowledge of the correspondence between numbers and banknotes) a sizeable proportion of the sample showed errors. The pattern of errors was analysed to identify difficulty factors. A strong gender effect with better performance in men than women was observed, which was even greater than the expected effect of educational level. Results in normals allowed to propose cut-off scores for neuropsychological assessment in brain-damaged patients with very low levels of education, which were tested in a small sample of illiterate or semi-literate patients with cerebrovascular accident. It is argued that the relatively neglected area of neuropsychological assessment in illiterates is of great practical and theoretical interest.
Preliminary Study of the Applicability of Software in the investigation of Sustained Auditory Attention

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The use of auditory behavioral tests, which specifically assess sustained attention, is necessary, due to its relationship with learning, language production, cognitive development and school performance. Objective To evaluate how children performed using software developed to investigate the ability of sustained auditory attention, and to compare the scores obtained in this format with those of the original, non-computerized test. Methods This cross-sectional study included 52 children of both genders, aged 6 to 11 years, with normal hearing and no history of complaints regarding inattention and/or hyperactivity. The computerized test was administered to all 52 children. The total error score (inattention and impulsivity) and the vigilance decrement were used to define the children's performance when using the software. The scores obtained in the two formats (computer software and original on compact disc) were then compared. Results Statistically significant differences were found in the scores for innattention, impulsivity, and total error score (inattention and impulsivity) when comparing genders, and a negative correlation coefficient was found when comparing ages. Increased scores were found for all variables of the sustained auditory attention ability test (SAAAT) compared with the original format. Conclusion Females performed worse than males in all aspects except for vigilance decrement when using the SAAAT software developed to evaluate the ability of SAAAT vigilance; younger children made more errors when using the SAAAT software; inattention errors were more frequent than impulsivity. Overall, higher values were obtained using the SAAAT software, when compared with the original version.
Elaboration of an instrument to evaluate the recognition of Brazilian melodies in children

Abstract:Introduction: There is evidence pointing to the importance of the evaluation of musical perception through objective and subjective instruments. In Brazil, there is a shortage of instruments that evaluates musical perception. Objective: To develop an instrument to evaluate the recognition of traditional Brazilian melodies and investigate the performance of children with typical hearing. Methods: The study was carried out after approval of the research ethics committee (1.198.607). The instrument was developed in software format with website access, using the languages PHP 5.5.12, Javascript, Cascade style sheets and "HTML5"; database "MYSQL 5.6.17" on the "Apache 2.4.9" server. Fifteen melodies of Brazilian folk songs were recorded in piano synthesized timbre, with 12 seconds per melody reproduction and four second intervals between them. A total of 155 schooled children, aged eight to 11 years, of both sexes, with typical hearing participated in the study. The test was performed in a silent room with sound stimuli amplified by a sound box at 65dBNA, positioned at 0 azimuth, and at one meter from the participant, the notebook was used for children to play with on the screen on the title and illustration of the melody they recognized they were listening to. The responses were recorded on their own database. Results: The instrument titled "Evaluation of recognition of traditional melodies in children" can be run on various devices (computers, notebooks, tablets, mobile phones) and operating systems (Windows, Macintosh, Android, Linux). The average time to perform the test was 3'15″. Conclusion: The development and application of the software proved effective for the studied population. This instrument may contribute to the improvement of protocols for the evaluation of musical perception in children with hearing aid and/or cochlear implants users.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Degenerative cervical myelopathy stands as the primary non-traumatic cause of spinal cord dysfunction in adults. Neurological assessment tools rooted in functionality, such as the Nurick scale and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Score (JOA), are commonly employed. The latter was revised and culturally adapted to Western norms by Chiles et al. in 1999, resulting in the modified JOA score (mJOA). This study aims to translate, cross-culturally validate, and assess the reproducibility of the Nurick scale into Brazilian Portuguese among patients with cervical degenerative myelopathy. Material And Methods: This study comprised two phases: initial translation, back-translation, final version assessment, and application test evaluation. A total of 70 individuals were evaluated, with 36 in the cervical myelopathy group and 34 in the control group. Subsequently, both groups underwent assessment using the mJOA and the NURICK-BRAZIL version, with data collection following. Data analysis employed Mann-Whitney tests and Spearman’s correlation tests. Analyses were executed using the statistical package R, with a significance level set at 5%. Results: Mann-Whitney comparison tests revealed significant differences in the NURICK-BRAZIL scale between the control and patient groups. Spearman’s correlation coefficient indicated a robust negative correlation between the NURICK-BRAZIL and mJOA scales. These findings suggest that the adapted Nurick scale in Brazilian Portuguese (NURICK-BRAZIL) holds potential for validation in evaluating patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy. Conclusion: The translation, adaptation, and validation of the original Nurick scale in Brazilian Portuguese (NURICK-BRAZIL) demonstrate similarity, applicability, good comprehension, and significant potential for widespread utilization as a valuable clinical and scientific evaluation tool for cervical myelopathy patients. Abstract:Introdução: As escalas Categories of Auditory Performance II (CAP-II) e Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS) são questionários simples e de rápida aplicação que permitem avaliar o desempenho auditivo de crianças com implante coclear (IC). O objetivo deste estudo foi a tradução, adaptação e validação da versão em português europeu das escalas CAP-II e IT-MAIS.Métodos: Um total de 85 participantes completaram a versão em português europeu dos questionários CAP-II e IT-MAIS, dos quais 45 eram pais de crianças com IC pediátrico (9,84 ± 4,22 anos) e outros 40 eram pais de crianças com audição normal (8,35 ± 3,56 anos). Foi avaliada a reprodutibilidade entre avaliadores, a reprodutibilidade teste-reteste, a comparação dos resultados do grupo de estudo versus grupo de controlo, a consistência interna e a correlação das novas escalas.Resultados: As escalas CAP-II e IT-MAIS apresentaram uma elevada confiabilidade e reprodutibilidade, respetivamente com coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (ICC) de 0,979 (p < 0,001) e correlação de Spearman de 0,924 para a escala CAP-II, e ICC de 0,932 (p < 0,001) e coeficiente de correlação de Spearman de 0,732 para a escala IT-MAIS. As versões do IT-MAIS e do CAP-II apresentaram uma forte consistência interna (valor do coeficiente α de Cronbach de 0,887 para a escala CAP-II e correlação positiva de Spearman de 0,677 para a escala IT-MAIS, respetivamente) e permitem diferenciar entre crianças com audição normal e crianças pós-implantação (p = 0,001 e p 0,05).Conclusão: A versão em português europeu destas escalas demonstrou ser uma ferramenta válida e confiável na avaliação do desempenho auditivo em crianças falantes de português europeu com deficiência auditiva.

Identification of struggling readers or at risk of reading difficulties with one-minute fluency measures

Abstract:Background: To identify readers who are struggling or at risk of reading difficulties, reference standards in oral reading fluency (ORF) are used to conduct an assessment that is based on a widely reported method known as curriculum-based measurement (CBM), which itself is based on 1-min fluency measures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate students' ORF (with a 1-min fluency measure) to characterize their fluency and to determine references of appropriate development in reading at the 50th percentile. Method: For this study, a database of readings made available by the Learning Studies Research Laboratory was used. This database consisted of 365 readings by elementary-school students from the third to fifth grades in two cities in the interior of the state of São Paulo from two different public school systems that use the same teaching methodology. The data consisted of digital audio recordings of the passage "The Umbrella" (text suitable for schooling levels) of the Protocol for Assessment of Reading Comprehension procedure. For this procedure, three steps were performed: step 1-listening to the 365 readings and assessing the scores for the number of words read correctly per minute; step 2-the calculation of the mean and percentiles for each grade; and step 3-the adaptation of the reference table to indicate students eligible to receive reading fluency intervention. Results: Third-year students who correctly read 86 or more words per minute, fourth-year students who correctly read 104 or more words per minute, and fifth-year students who correctly read 117 or more words per minute were considered students who had made adequate progress in reading. Conclusion: It was possible to classify students based on the 1-min fluency measures, with reference intervals of words read correctly per minute per school year (for the third, fourth, and fifth years) for those who were making adequate progress in reading and reference intervals for those who were considered readers who were struggling or at risk of reading difficulties.
Validation of the Expression and Emotion Scale for Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder into Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective To validate the parent-rated Expression and Emotion Scale for Children (EESC) for patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods The EESC was applied to parents of children with and without ADHD. The children were divided into age groups: Group A, between six and eight years old; Group B, between nine and 11 years old; and Group C, between 12 and 15 years old. The validation was carried out according to the steps proposed by Guillemin et al. For the statistical calculation, Cronbach’s α, Pearson’s correlation, the ICC and ROC curve were used. Results The statistical tests showed satisfactory coefficients: Cronbach’s α = 0.76; Pearson’s correlation r = 0.91 with CI 95%; replicability ICC = 0.66; sensitivity 0.75; specificity 0.67; accuracy 71%. Conclusion According to psychometric data on internal and external consistency (reliability, reproducibility), sensitivity, and specificity, the parent-rated EESC for ADHD is useful in assessing emotional expression.

An automated flowchart for the Modified Rankin Scale assessment: a multicenter inter-rater agreement analysis

Abstract:Background and objective The Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) is a widely adopted scale for assessing stroke recovery. Despite limitations, the mRS has been adopted as primary outcome in most recent clinical acute stroke trials. Designed to be used by multidisciplinary clinical staff, the congruency of this scale is not consistent, which may lead to mistakes in clinical or research application. We aimed to develop and validate an interactive and automated digital tool for assessing the mRS – the iRankin. Methods A panel of five board-certified and mRS-trained vascular neurologists developed an automated flowchart based on current mRS literature. Two international, experts were consulted on content and provided feedback on the prototype platform. The platform contained five vignettes, and five real video cases, representing mRS grades 0-5. For validation, we invited neurological staff from six comprehensive stroke centers to complete an online assessment. Participants were randomized into two equal groups usual practice versus iRankin. The participants were randomly allocated in pairs for the congruency analysis. Weighted kappa (kw) and proportions were used to describe agreement. Results A total of 59 professionals completed the assessment. The weight-Kappa was dramatically improved among Nurses 0.76 (95% CI 0.55-0.97) x 0.30 (0.07-0.67), and among Vascular Neurologists 0.87 (0.72-1) x 0.82 (0.66-0.98). In the accuracy analysis, after the standard mRS values for the vignettes and videos were determined by a panel of experts, and considering each correct answer as equivalent to 1 point on a scale of 0-15, it revealed a higher mean of 10.6 (±2.2) in the iRankin group and 8.2 (±2.3) points in the control group (p=0.02). In an adjusted analysis, the iRankin adoption was independently associated with the score of congruencies between reported and standard scores (Beta-coefficient 2.22, 95% CI 0.64-3.81, p-value= 0.007). Conclusion The iRankin adoption led to a substantial or near-perfect agreement in all analyzed professional categories. More trials are needed to generalize our findings. The item bank of the MD-CAT contained 74 items, with 44 and 30 items respectively for the subscales of gross and fine motor skills. High correlation existed between the two subscales (<em>r</em> = 0.96). Three stopping rules were set for the MD-CAT: (1) the person reliability achieved 0.95 or the limited reliability increased by < 0.01, (2) at least 3 items were assessed in each dimension, and (3) the number of items used for assessment reached 16. Based on the three stopping rules, the MD-CAT had high correlations with its total test length (<em>r</em> =0.87 to 0.98 for the two dimensions), indicating sufficient construct validity. The MD-CAT also had adequate diagnostic validity (area under the curve = 0.72–0.93) and efficiency (an average of 3 to 6 items used for the assessment).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>The MD-CAT has high precision and efficiency, good construct validity and high diagnostic validity. The results of our study indicate that the MD-CAT can be useful in clinical practice and in research as a diagnostic measure.</p>
