Abstract:It was claimed that all quantum string seals are insecure [H. F. Chau, quant-ph/0602099]. However, here it will be shown that for imperfect quantum string seals, the information obtained by the measurement proposed in that reference is trivial. Therefore imperfect quantum string seals can be unconditionally secure.

Abstract:Though it was proven that secure quantum sealing of a single classical bit is impossible in principle, here we propose an unconditionally secure quantum sealing protocol which seals a classical bit string. Any reader can obtain each bit of the sealed string with an arbitrarily small error rate, while reading the string is detectable. The protocol is simple and easy to implement. The possibility of using this protocol to seal a single bit in practice is also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The relationship between the quantum bit commitment (QBC) and quantum seal (QS) is studied. It is elaborated that QBC and QS are not equivalent, but QS protocols satisfying a stronger unconditional security requirement can lead to an unconditionally secure QBC. In this sense, QS is strictly stronger than QBC in security requirements. Based on an earlier proposal on sealing a single bit, a feasible QBC protocol is also put forward, which is secure in practice even if the cheater has a strong quantum computational power.

Abstract:Seal in classical information is simply impossible. Since classical information can be easily copied any number of times. Based on quantum information, esp. quantum unclonable theorem, quantum seal maybe constructed perfectly. But it is shown that perfect quantum seal is impossible, and the success probability is bounded. In this paper, we show how to exceed the optimal bound by using the TCF (Trapdoor Claw Free) functions, which can be constructed based on LWE assumption. Hence it is post-quantum secure.

Abstract:A quantum seal is a way of encoding a classical message into quantum states, so that everybody can read the message error-free, but at the same time the sender and all intended readers who have some prior knowledge of the quantum seal, can check if the seal has been broken and the message read. The verification is done without reading nor disturbing the sealed message.

Abstract:Sealing information means making it publicly available, but with the possibility of knowing if it has been read. Commenting on Ref. 1, we will show that perfect quantum sealing is not possible for perfectly retrievable information, due to the possibility of performing a perfect measurement without disturbance, even on unknown states. The measurement is a collective one, and this makes the protocol of quantum sealing very interesting as the only example of the power of collective measurements in breaking security.

Abstract:Technical means for identifying when tampering occurs is a critical part of many containment and surveillance technologies. Conventional fiber optic seals provide methods for monitoring enclosed inventories, but they are vulnerable to spoofing attacks based on classical physics. We address these vulnerabilities with the development of a quantum seal that offers the ability to detect the intercept-resend attack using quantum integrity verification. Our approach represents an application of entanglement to provide guarantees in the authenticity of the seal state by verifying it was transmitted coherently. We implement these ideas using polarization-entangled photon pairs that are verified after passing through a fiber-optic channel testbed. Using binary detection theory, we find the probability of detecting inauthentic signals is greater than 0.9999 with a false alarm chance of $10^{-9}$ for a 10 second sampling interval. In addition, we show how the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect concurrently provides a tight bound on redirection attack, in which tampering modifies the shape of the seal. Our measurements limit the tolerable path length change to sub-millimeter disturbances. These tamper-indicating features of the quantum seal offer unprecedented security for unattended monitoring systems.

Abstract:We study the effect of resonance decays on intensity interferometry for heavy ion collisions. Collective expansion of the source leads to a dependence of the two-particle correlation function on the pair momentum K. This opens the possibility to reconstruct the dynamics of the source from the K-dependence of the measured HBT radii. Here we address the question to what extent resonance decays can fake such a flow signal. Within a simple parametrization for the emission function we present a comprehensive analysis of the interplay of flow and resonance decays on the one- and two-particle spectra. We discuss in detail the non-Gaussian features of the correlation function introduced by long-lived resonances and the resulting problems in extracting meaningful HBT radii. We propose to define them in terms of the second order q-moments of the correlator C(q, K). We show that this yields a more reliable characterisation of the correlator in terms of its width and the correlation strength `lambda' than other commonly used fit procedures. The normalized fourth-order q-moments (kurtosis) provide a quantitative measure for the non-Gaussian features of the correlator. At least for the class of models studied here, the kurtosis helps separating effects from expansion flow and resonance decays, and provides the cleanest signal to distinguish between scenarios with and without transverse flow.

Abstract:A new concept of quantum secret sharing is introduced, in which collaboration among participants are encourage. And the dealer can ask the participants to send back their share and revoke the secret before a predefined date or event, i.e. so-called seal property. We also give two concrete constructions of CE-QSS-Seal (Collaboration-Encouraging Quantum Secret Sharing with Seal property) scheme. The first one is unconditional secure and achieve the optimal bound of a seal scheme. The second one improve the optimal bound of seal by introducing post-quantum secure computational assumption.

Abstract:The security of most quantum signatures cannot be proved with security model under chosen-message attack. No formal proof can prove that their security is fully dependent on the basic quantum theory. Based on the orthogonal quantum state and key-controlled quantum hash function, an arbitrated quantum signature is proposed. In this scheme, the signatory produces the quantum signature by quantum-encrypting the output of key-controlled quantum hash function. The signature verification is performed by decrypting the signed message and comparing the decrypted message with the output of the key-controlled quantum hash function. The security of the proposed scheme depends on the indistinguishability of the unknown quantum sequence. Its unforgeability can be formally proved with security model under chosen-message attack. Therefore, its security can be supported by the formal proof. On the other hand, in the proposed scheme, no entangled state is used. It also has better qubit efficiency as well.

Abstract:We investigate the definition of security for encryption scheme in quantum context. We systematically define the indistinguishability and semantic security for quantum public-key and private-key encryption schemes, and for computational security, physical security and information-theoretic security. Based on our definition, we present a necessary and sufficient condition that leads to information-theoretic indistinguishability for quantum encryption scheme. The equivalence between the indistinguishability and semantic security of quantum encryption scheme is also proved.

Abstract:A bit string commitment protocol securely commits $N$ classical bits in such a way that the recipient can extract only $M<N$ bits of information about the string. Classical reasoning might suggest that bit string commitment implies bit commitment and hence, given the Mayers-Lo-Chau theorem, that non-relativistic quantum bit string commitment is impossible. Not so: there exist non-relativistic quantum bit string commitment protocols, with security parameters $\epsilon$ and $M$, that allow $A$ to commit $N = N(M, \epsilon)$ bits to $B$ so that $A$'s probability of successfully cheating when revealing any bit and $B$'s probability of extracting more than $N'=N-M$ bits of information about the $N$ bit string before revelation are both less than $\epsilon$. With a slightly weakened but still restrictive definition of security against $A$, $N$ can be taken to be $O(\exp (C N'))$ for a positive constant $C$. I briefly discuss possible applications.

Abstract:Shannon's perfect-secrecy theorem states that a perfect encryption system that yields zero information to the adversary must be a one-time pad (OTP) with the keys randomly generated and never reused. However, recently discovered exotic properties of quantum entanglement have motivated us to reconsider Shannon's theorem in the quantum regime. In this work we design a quantum encryption method that overcomes Shannon's theorem to achieve perfect secrecy with reusable keys. The mechanism used is fundamentally quantum, demonstrating subtle but critical differences in how information is processed in quantum versus classical systems.

Abstract:Using unstable particles which decay by emitting neutrinos, we propose a quantum bit commitment protocol that is humanly impossible to break. Neutrinos carry away quantum information, but their interaction with matter is so weak that it would take an astronomically-sized machine just to catch them, not to mention performing controlled unitary operations on them. As a result quantum information is lost, and cheating is not possible even if the participants had access to the most powerful quantum computers that could ever be built. Therefore, for all practical purposes, our new protocol is as good as unconditionally secure.

Abstract:Quantum signature (QS) is used to authenticate the identity of the originator, ensure data integrity and provide non-repudiation service with unconditional security. Depending on whether a trusted third party named arbitrator is involved or not, QS is classified as arbitrated QS and true QS. This paper studies existence problem about the two kinds of QS and contributes to two points: 1) a basic framework is provided to analyze the possibility of arbitrated QS on signing quantum messages; 2) disagreement between the impossibility of true QS and an existing true QS scheme is solved.

Abstract:We propose an entanglement-based quantum bit string commitment protocol whose composability is proven in the random oracle model. This protocol has the additional property of preserving the privacy of the committed message. Even though this property is not resilient against man-in-the-middle attacks, this threat can be circumvented by considering that the parties communicate through an authenticated channel. The protocol remains secure and private (but not composable) if we realize the random oracles as physical unclonable functions (PUFs) in the so-called bad PUF model.

Abstract:Public-key cryptosystems for quantum messages are considered from two aspects: public-key encryption and public-key authentication. Firstly, we propose a general construction of quantum public-key encryption scheme, and then construct an information-theoretic secure instance. Then, we propose a quantum public-key authentication scheme, which can protect the integrity of quantum messages. This scheme can both encrypt and authenticate quantum messages. It is information-theoretic secure with regard to encryption, and the success probability of tampering decreases exponentially with the security parameter with regard to authentication. Compared with classical public-key cryptosystems, one private-key in our schemes corresponds to an exponential number of public-keys, and every quantum public-key used by the sender is an unknown quantum state to the sender.

Abstract:Unconditionally secure bit commitment and coin flipping are known to be impossible in the classical world. Bit commitment is known to be impossible also in the quantum world. We introduce a related new primitive - {\em quantum bit escrow}. In this primitive Alice commits to a bit $b$ to Bob. The commitment is {\em binding} in the sense that if Alice is asked to reveal the bit, Alice can not bias her commitment without having a good probability of being detected cheating. The commitment is {\em sealing} in the sense that if Bob learns information about the encoded bit, then if later on he is asked to prove he was playing honestly, he is detected cheating with a good probability. Rigorously proving the correctness of quantum cryptographic protocols has proved to be a difficult task. We develop techniques to prove quantitative statements about the binding and sealing properties of the quantum bit escrow protocol. A related primitive we construct is a quantum biased coin flipping protocol where no player can control the game, i.e., even an all-powerful cheating player must lose with some constant probability, which stands in sharp contrast to the classical world where such protocols are impossible.
