Abstract:We propose a framework of bit commitment protocol using a comparison scheme and present a compound comparison scheme based on counterfactual cryptography. Finally, we propose a counterfactual quantum bit commitment protocol. In security analysis, we give the proper security parameters for counterfactual quantum bit commitment and prove that intercept attack and intercept/resend attack are ineffective attack for our protocol. In addition, we explain that counterfactual quantum bit commitment protocol cannot be attacked with no-go theorem attack by current technology.

Abstract:Quantum physics allows for unconditionally secure communication between parties that trust each other. However, when the parties do not trust each other such as in the bit commitment scenario, quantum physics is not enough to guarantee security unless extra assumptions are made. Unconditionally secure bit commitment only becomes feasible when quantum physics is combined with relativistic causality constraints. Here we experimentally implement a quantum bit commitment protocol with relativistic constraints that offers unconditional security. The commitment is made through quantum measurements in two quantum key distribution systems in which the results are transmitted via free-space optical communication to two agents separated with more than 20 km. The security of the protocol relies on the properties of quantum information and relativity theory. In each run of the experiment, a bit is successfully committed with less than 5.68×10(-2) cheating probability. This demonstrates the experimental feasibility of quantum communication with relativistic constraints.

Abstract:We report on observations of the low-mass X-ray binary 4U1626-67 performed during the BeppoSAX Science Verification Phase. We present the broad-band 0.1-100 keV pulse averaged spectrum, that is well fit by a two-component function: a 0.27 +/- 0.02 keV blackbody and an absorbed power law with a photon index of 0.89 +/- 0.02. A very deep and narrow absorption feature at 38 keV, attributable to electron cyclotron resonance, is clearly visible in the broad-band spectrum. It corresponds to a neutron star magnetic field strength of 3.3 x 10^{12} G. The 4U1626-67 pulse profiles show a dramatic dependance on energy: the transition between the low energy (E<10 keV) "bi-horned" shape to the high-energy (E>10 keV) sinusoidal profile is clearly visible in our data. The modulation index shows a monotonic increase with energy.

Abstract:Mayers, Lo and Chau proved unconditionally secure quantum bit commitment is impossible. It is shown that their proof is valid only for a particular model of quantum bit commitment encoding, in general it does not hold good. A different model of unconditionally secure quantum bit commitment - both entanglement and disentanglement-based - is presented. Even cheating can be legally proved with some legal evidences. Unconditionally secure quantum bit commitment can be established on the top of unconditionally secure quantum coin tossing, which is also claimed to be two-way impossible.

Abstract:Based on the fact that the entanglement can not be created locally, we proposed a quantum bit commitment protocol, in which entangled states and quantum algorithms is used. The bit is not encoded with the form of the quantum states, and delaying the measurement is required. Therefore the protocol will not be denied by the Mayers-Lo-Chau no-go theorem, and unconditional security is achieved.

Abstract:Bit commitment protocols whose security is based on the laws of quantum mechanics alone are generally held to be impossible. In this paper we give a strengthened and explicit proof of this result. We extend its scope to a much larger variety of protocols, which may have an arbitrary number of rounds, in which both classical and quantum information is exchanged, and which may include aborts and resets. Moreover, we do not consider the receiver to be bound to a fixed "honest" strategy, so that "anonymous state protocols", which were recently suggested as a possible way to beat the known no-go results are also covered. We show that any concealing protocol allows the sender to find a cheating strategy, which is universal in the sense that it works against any strategy of the receiver. Moreover, if the concealing property holds only approximately, the cheat goes undetected with a high probability, which we explicitly estimate. The proof uses an explicit formalization of general two party protocols, which is applicable to more general situations, and a new estimate about the continuity of the Stinespring dilation of a general quantum channel. The result also provides a natural characterization of protocols that fall outside the standard setting of unlimited available technology, and thus may allow secure bit commitment. We present a new such protocol whose security, perhaps surprisingly, relies on decoherence in the receiver's lab.

Abstract:In a recent letter (Phys. Lett. A 377 (2013) 1076, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0905.3801" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0905.3801">arXiv:0905.3801</a>), the authors presented an impossibility proof of quantum bit commitment, which attempted to cover all possible protocols that involve both quantum and classical information. Here we show that there are many errors in the proof, thus it fails to exhaust all conceivable protocols.

Abstract:Although Mayers, Lo and Chau successfully showed that unconditionally secure quantum bit commitment (QBC) is impossible, we present a secure QBC protocol which is quite different from the model used in their proofs. If Alice wants to commit a bit b, she first encodes b into a series of classical bit strings of the same length. The requirement is that the modulo 2 sum of all bits in every bit string equals to b. Then Alice uses quantum one-way function to produce quantum states which are corresponding to the encoded classical bit strings and will be sent to Bob as evidence. The quantum one-way function used here is just that was successfully applied in Gottesman and Chuang's quantum digital signatures. When it comes to the unveilingtime, Alice only sends the bit strings to Bob. Finally, Bob generates quantum states form the bit strings by the same quantum one-way function and uses controlled-swap circuit to check whether the quantum states are identical with the evidence.

Abstract:The relationship between the quantum bit commitment (QBC) and quantum seal (QS) is studied. It is elaborated that QBC and QS are not equivalent, but QS protocols satisfying a stronger unconditional security requirement can lead to an unconditionally secure QBC. In this sense, QS is strictly stronger than QBC in security requirements. Based on an earlier proposal on sealing a single bit, a feasible QBC protocol is also put forward, which is secure in practice even if the cheater has a strong quantum computational power.

Abstract:Bit commitment is a fundamental cryptographic primitive in which Bob wishes to commit a secret bit to Alice. Perfectly secure bit commitment has been proven impossible through asynchronous exchange of classical and quantum information. Perfect security is however possible by restraining the exchange of classical and quantum information to suitably chosen relativistic constraints. This requires Alice (and Bob) to split into two remote agents performing space-like separated classical communication, and in one agent exchanging quantum bits with the other party. The duration of the commitment is given by the distance between the two remote agents. The original protocol requires the quantum communication to happen at a precise location and time with respect to the classical communication. We show how the protocol can be modified to relax this constraint such that the quantum part of the protocol can be performed at any time before the actual commitment, making it much more practical. Finally, we present an experimental demonstration of this protocol realized with a commercial quantum key distribution system and with synchronized classical agents located in Geneva and Singapore, yielding a commitment time of 15 ms. Our work includes a complete security analysis, accounting for experimental imperfections (multi-photon emission, transmission loss, detector inefficiency and dark counts) and finite statistics.

Abstract:AbstractCheat sensitive quantum bit commitment (CSQBC) loosens the security requirement of quantum bit commitment (QBC), so that the existing impossibility proofs of unconditionally secure QBC can be evaded. But here we analyze the common features in all existing CSQBC protocols and show that in any CSQBC having these features, the receiver can always learn a non-trivial amount of information on the sender's committed bit before it is unveiled, while his cheating can pass the security check with a probability not less than 50%. The sender's cheating is also studied. The optimal CSQBC protocols that can minimize the sum of the cheating probabilities of both parties are found to be trivial, as they are practically useless. We also discuss the possibility of building a fair protocol in which both parties can cheat with equal probabilities.

Abstract:Bit commitment is a cryptographic task in which Alice commits a bit to Bob such that she cannot change the value of the bit after her commitment and Bob cannot learn the value of the bit before Alice opens her commitment. In this paper, we propose a quantum bit commitment (QBC) protocol which is arbitrarily concealing and practically binding. Compared to other arbitrarily concealing and practically binding QBC protocols, ours is more efficient. Neither multi-particle entanglement nor long-term quantum memory is used in our protocol, which makes it implementable by the current technology.

Abstract:Unconditionally secure bit commitment and coin flipping are known to be impossible in the classical world. Bit commitment is known to be impossible also in the quantum world. We introduce a related new primitive - {\em quantum bit escrow}. In this primitive Alice commits to a bit $b$ to Bob. The commitment is {\em binding} in the sense that if Alice is asked to reveal the bit, Alice can not bias her commitment without having a good probability of being detected cheating. The commitment is {\em sealing} in the sense that if Bob learns information about the encoded bit, then if later on he is asked to prove he was playing honestly, he is detected cheating with a good probability. Rigorously proving the correctness of quantum cryptographic protocols has proved to be a difficult task. We develop techniques to prove quantitative statements about the binding and sealing properties of the quantum bit escrow protocol. A related primitive we construct is a quantum biased coin flipping protocol where no player can control the game, i.e., even an all-powerful cheating player must lose with some constant probability, which stands in sharp contrast to the classical world where such protocols are impossible.
