Abstract:The rising energy demand and the push for "Affordable and Clean Energy" (Sustainable Development Goal 7-SDG7) have intensified the need to utilize renewable energy sources (RES). Microgrids integrating RES like solar, wind, and biomass, besides catering to the local loads export surplus generation to the utility grid. However, the integrating Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into the grid introduces bidirectional power flow, challenging the traditional unidirectional design of distribution networks. Transformers are one of the most important apparatus in the distribution network with lifespans of almost 35–40 years. This study uses Ansys-based Finite Element (FE) modeling to analyze the impact of reverse power flow on an existing 11 kV/0.4 kV, 100 kVA dry-type distribution transformer installed at a distribution substation in the Kakdwip islands, Sunderbans, India. By assessing various conditions of power penetration (power export) and load demand (power import), the research aims to determine the effects on transformer longevity and establish safe power penetration limits. The work lays the foundation for FE-based assessment of other electrical apparatus in the distribution network, the insights of which will help Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) in optimizing the use of electrical components in bidirectional power flow environments.
