Abstract:Through interviews with key stakeholders within skateboard organizations that explicitly attend to issues of diversity, access, and equity, this article explores pedagogical practices that undergird these organizations' programming for justice. More specifically, this article focuses on the interplay between the implementation of practices of exclusion to promote, ultimately, inclusion. In theorizing this pedagogical approach, this article discusses how notions of "brave spaces" work in tandem with ideas and practices of cultivating "safe spaces" to work toward social transformation within and beyond skateboarding.

Abstract:Although three articles in this special issue address three very different social groupings—gender, ethnicity, and academic needs—they all highlight why inclusion is important for students' healthy development. The authors make specific suggestions for how schools might promote a more inclusive and welcoming climate for their students. Ultimately, all of the authors recognized that positive intergroup contact is necessary for students to feel included at school but will not simply occur because students have the opportunity to interact. Rather, it is necessary for teachers to be active in establishing prosocial and inclusive classroom norms. This will likely be both the best way to create inclusive schools and the biggest challenge.

Abstract:The unreflected promotion of diversity as a value in social interactions -- including technology-mediated ones -- risks emphasizing the benefits of inclusion at the cost of not recognizing the potential harm from failing to protect stigmatized or marginalized individuals. Adopting the stance that technology is not value-neutral, we attempt to answer the question of how technology-mediated social platforms could accommodate \emph{diversity by design}, by balancing the often competing values of protection and inclusion. This short paper presents our research agenda as well as initial analysis and outcomes. Building on approaches from scenario planning and the methodology of Value Sensitive Design, we identify ethical principles and arguments on how to curate diversity, which we seek to operationalize through formal argumentation.

Abstract:For women, sharing space, being acknowledged in that space, is a battle of trust and spirit. Academic spaces have previously been colonised, either by the leader in charge, or a previous ‘owner’ of that space. This presentation and paper describes three common intersectional narratives of Williams’ (1991) ‘spirit murder’; and the ‘protectors and restorers’ (Revilla, 2021) of our space in the academy. Women are battling to occupy their work spaces on a daily basis: trying to speak, teach, research in ways they have organically invented and conceived in their service. They are the caretakers of diverse and different languages, and innovative methods to research and teachings; yet these divergent pathways are often blocked by colonised, ‘expected’ practices within the institution. Even the physical grey and white walls are concrete signs of ownership. The Academy is a place we are in; where we have a right to be in (Sefa Dei, 2021). Trusting and accepting these unique differences is at the heart of moving forward to a more inclusive, rich research and teaching space. Just because a pathway or method is distinct, does not mean it is deficient. For educational leaders, acknowledging shared ownership in the academic space involves sharing and projecting one’s self into the space (Kreger,1999); trusting that, while an approach is unknown, can be successful. To redress space in the academy, educators must be at ease with the discomfort of sharing space in what has yet to be experienced and institutionalised.

Abstract:In recent years, school psychology has given increasing attention to issues of social justice and antiracism. While such orientations are not new, the scope and centrality of these movements within the field are, as is the growing appreciation of the need to integrate them across all areas of professional activities and efforts in school psychology. The aim of this special topic section is to create a space for scholarship addressing a broad range of issues relevant to advancing equity and justice in school psychology. In particular, we seek to curate diverse scholarship that expands the ways we conceptualize, design, implement, and interpret school psychology research, as well as how we approach graduate preparation and practice in school psychology to advance equitable and just services for individuals from historically and systemically marginalized backgrounds. The resulting compilation of articles provide insight into how school psychologists can approach scholarship, practice, and professional education to advance antiracism, social justice, and equity. Themes include expanding the nature and scope of school psychology scholarship by confronting the detriments of whiteness and epistemic exclusion; centering equity, healing, and minoritized voices in practice; and leveraging diverse research methods, including participatory approaches, to elevate youth and family voices in addressing some of the most pressing issues in schools. Impact Statement School psychology has given increasing attention to issues of social justice and antiracism, with growing appreciation of the need to integrate them across all professional activities. This article contributes important information regarding how these broad efforts can be supported by confronting the detriments of epistemic exclusion and whiteness in scholarship; centering equity, healing, and minoritized voices in practice; and leveraging diverse research methods, including participatory approaches.

Abstract:Despite the importance of students exploring career options, developing career readiness, and experiencing a successful transition to the workforce, historically excluded populations' participation in career development remains low. Additionally, career development professionals continue to feel unsupported in their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices and in incorporating DEI in their respective roles. This multicase study uncovers a mirage approach to the work of career development professionals, providing opportunities to engage in this work, yet largely leaving DEI work unsupported in their quest to incorporate it into their spaces. Results indicate the larger impacts of navigating a lack of support as well as the oppressive intuitional structures that persist while engaging in DEI pedagogy and praxis.

Abstract:With the growth of third sector research, the field needs more dedicated discussion on how we study the third sector, not only the decisions in research design or data collection process but also the general research approaches and the way we analyze the data. In this introduction to the special issue of Voluntas Volume I, we discuss how the sector can foster a more inclusive and diverse research community for people, topics, and methods. We also discuss the implications of methodological pluralism, an organizing principle of a research community that fosters respect, appreciation, and empathy between its members. We conclude by calling for more empathetic, transparent, and accountable research.

Abstract:Inclusive school contexts can promote psychological and social adjustment and enhance learning among students. Changing demographics and 21st-century workplace needs suggest that ethnic diversity is one important dimension of inclusion to consider. This article presents 4 suggestions for how schools can facilitate inclusivity for ethnic diversity that are recommended to be employed in conjunction with one another: (a) school and classroom ethnic composition (i.e., increased ethnic diversity), (b) positive ethnic identity for ethnic minority students, (c) multicultural/diversity training and cooperative learning, and (d) the promotion of social competence and prosocial behaviors. Developmental considerations are discussed and a case is made that improving individual students' functioning can ultimately promote inclusivity for <i>all</i> students. Assisting students to be ready and able to form friendships with peers from ethnically diverse backgrounds provides them with valuable experience and skills that they can carry forward to new educational, community, and workplace settings.

Abstract:Addressing issues of diversity becomes more difficult when challenges impeding diversity efforts remain hidden. Issues like microaggressions, implicit bias, and lack of support are often present, but little is done by those in positions of power to mitigate or eliminate them. The purpose of this self-reflection is to address each of these areas and suggest six steps that may be taken to alleviate them: 1) anticipate microaggressions; 2) explore identities; 3) overcome internalized oppression and implicit bias; 4) recognize and mitigate stereotype threat; 5) differentiate yourself and provide space for others to differentiate themselves; 6) develop and reinforce support systems. The initial phase of the manuscript focuses on implicit bias manifestations, specifically microaggressions, and how to prevent them from disrupting inclusivity. Following that will be a review of implicit bias, as well as the importance of self-awareness in promoting inclusivity in the workplace. Finally, the discussion will center what can be done do to create the best environment for ourselves and others as we move together towards creating environments that do more than speak to diversity efforts and are actually welcoming to each person within that space. This manuscript is written for a few reasons. First, it provides insight on how to incorporate and integrate our multiple and sometimes divergent identities. Second, to discuss how our identities may influence how we react to diverse and non-diverse others. Third, this manuscript fills a gap in the field related to the experiences of those among us with multiple marginalized identities. This autoethnography seeks to empower not only myself but also others, especially those of us at the margins (e.g., people of color, women, the LGBT community) and those with dominant identities to speak up when they witness inequality.

Abstract:This journal article examines inclusive education practices with a focus on fostering diversity and equity within the classroom. Recognizing the importance of accommodating diverse learning needs, the study explores strategies and approaches to create an inclusive educational environment. The research underscores the significance of adopting a student-centered approach that acknowledges and respects individual differences. It delves into the implementation of flexible instructional methods, personalized learning plans, and varied assessment strategies to cater to a broad spectrum of learners, including those with diverse abilities and backgrounds. Furthermore, the article investigates the role of teacher professional development in promoting inclusive practices. It explores how educators can enhance their skills and knowledge to create inclusive classrooms that embrace diversity. The study emphasizes collaborative efforts among educators, support staff, and administrators to create a cohesive and inclusive learning community. The examination of curricular adaptations and the incorporation of universal design principles are also key focal points. The article assesses how modifying curricula to be more accessible and designing learning materials that accommodate diverse learning styles contribute to an inclusive educational experience. In conclusion, this article contributes valuable insights into inclusive education practices, shedding light on the importance of fostering diversity and equity in the classroom. By adopting student-centered approaches, promoting teacher professional development, and implementing inclusive curricular adaptations, educators can create environments that celebrate differences and provide equal opportunities for all learners. Abstract:An increasing number of organizations worldwide are engaging in diversity branding to promote their commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace. In this paper, we review 39 peer-reviewed articles on diversity branding, representing the most recent and significant studies in the field. Our review highlights the prevalence of diversity branding, core conceptual and theoretical approaches, and key findings. We also identify directions for future research, emphasizing company-level outcomes and potential negative, unintended consequences of diversity branding.

Abstract:Public facilities play an important role in every city, and they should be able to accommodate persons of all ages and abilities. Disability rights advocates argue that facilities and spaces such as schools, parks, civic or community centers, public safety facilities, arts and cultural facilities, recreational facilities, and plazas should be accessible to all, and equitably distributed throughout the city. They should be designed by, with, and for people with disabilities and older persons, and by doing so would be safe, and accessible by design. For persons with disabilities and older persons, “public spaces play a central role in the creation of inclusive communities and more specifically, in the formation of a public culture and in enriching cultural diversity” (Ravazzoli & Torricelli, 2017)[1]. Furthermore public spaces are spaces and hubs for mobility, economic activity and exchange and should be accessible to all regardless of impairment type.By denying or restricting access to train stations, airports, bus stops, micro-mobility infrastructure like shared bikes, and scooters, and other intermodal terminals we are denying and restricting our own economic and social development. Accessibility barriers in essence make these streets, sidewalks and bike lanes spaces of exclusion and congestion, or as social theorist Marion Iris Young would argue, public spaces of “oppression.” In the urban environment, realizing the politics of difference means building spaces that do not create barriers or prevent participation and rather promote and defend the access of all groups. A city that does not prioritize the access and inclusion of people with disabilities has decided that disabled people do not have the same value or citizenship worth as those without disabilities. Abstract:For scholars, practitioners, and legislators concerned about sexual minority adolescents, one of the main goals is to create more positive and inclusive learning environments for this minority group. Numerous factors, such as repeated patterns of homophobic bullying by classmates and others in school, have been a significant barrier to achieving this goal. In addition, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) adolescents encounter substantial inequality across a broad spectrum of wellbeing and education consequences. Compared with their heterosexual counterparts, LGBTQ adolescents experience more anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, antisocial behavior, poorer academic performance, less school attachment and protection, and a weaker desire to finish their studies. Such discrepancies based on gender and sexuality were linked to more maltreatment encountered by LGBTQ adolescents. It is crucial to recognize the backgrounds and expectations of LGBTQ adolescents to offer them the best resources. To overcome the inequality and obstacles faced by these LGBTQ adolescents, it is essential to examine tools and techniques that can be utilized. This study examined the literature that explains why society fails to provide enough support to LGBTQ students. Specifically, mechanisms explaining how LGBTQ adolescents interact with others in the learning environment and how such discrepancies arise will be examined. Following that, violence and prejudice, which are fundamental causes of psychological problems among LGBTQ adolescents, will be explored. This review paper thus provides supportive strategies for schools to develop more inclusive learning environments for LGBTQ adolescents.

Educational Strategies to Promote Student Diversity at the Elementary School Level

Abstract:Purpose: This research explains the challenges of inclusion in the context of Mexican education policy and how they are addressed in elementary school classrooms. Methods: This research involves an ethnographic analysis of the practices of five teachers in elementary schools in Mexico City, focusing on teachers' perspectives on student diversity, the challenges they face in their daily activities, and the strategies they employ to overcome them. Results: The results of the analysis show that the inclusion approach does not only emerge due to the presence of students with special conditions or certain characteristics, but is also influenced by the teachers' attitudes towards students' difficulties and the efforts they make to advance learning. Despite the observed inclusion of practices, research also identifies the persistent influence of medical and psychological perspectives on student learning, behavior, and difficulties. This research highlights the need to broaden the focus on the work of teaching and create conditions that support inclusive education in the classroom. Conclusion: An inclusive approach to education is not only concerned with students with special needs or certain characteristics; This is also influenced by the teacher's attitude towards student difficulties and the efforts made to improve learning. Teachers' attitudes and actions during teaching also play an important role in promoting inclusivity, although inclusive practices already exist, research shows the ongoing impact of medical and psychological perspectives on students' education, behavior and challenges. Understanding these perspectives is important for overcoming student learning difficulties and promoting more effective and sustainable approaches to inclusion in education. The implications of this research confirm that an inclusive approach to education requires attention to students' needs as well as teachers' attitudes and actions in helping them overcome learning difficulties, with a deep understanding of the long-term impact of medical and psychological perspectives to increase the effectiveness of inclusion in the education system.

Abstract:Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Ahead of Print. Despite much research on improving intergroup relations, the evidence for long-term effects in real-world settings is mixed. We used the social marketing approach to create an "Inclusivity Page" that could be added to course syllabi. The page contained three targeted pro-diversity messages based on social norms, personal benefits, and concrete behavioral recommendations. We tested our intervention in a large randomized controlled trial in university classrooms (Nstudents = 1,799). We obtained students' course grades and overall college GPAs several years later. A subset of students also completed an outcome survey three months after the intervention. Students from underrepresented racial groups exposed to the intervention early in college had better course grades and GPAs. We also observed an enhanced sense of belonging and better emotional and physical health among students from all marginalized groups. Our research demonstrates the utility of employing a targeted approach to improve experiences of members of marginalized groups.

Abstract:The Problem The ability of organizations to realize diversity remains problematic. To meet the needs of the modern workforce, new diversity and leadership approaches are required. The Solution Diversity intelligence, a promising new human resource development (HRD) tool, leads to enhanced inclusion and equitable treatment in the workplace. Several propositions herein advance that diversity intelligence is an antecedent to the compassionate love servant leadership model. The author describes the potential value diversity intelligent servant leaders provide to society, organizations, leaders, and especially employees with protected class status. This article addresses the implications of the propositions to theory and explores the intersection of servant leadership and diversity and inclusion research streams, practice describes how organizations and HRD professionals can benefit from and implement these arguments, and social impact discusses the benefits society can accrue when all organizational members are engaged, productive and valued. The Stakeholders This article benefits organizations, leaders, employees, and HRD professionals as well as leadership and diversity and inclusion scholars and practitioners.

Abstract:In the U.S., people with marginalized racial/ethnic, social class, sexual, and gender identities often have worse physical and mental health than people with more privileged identities. This paper reviews psychological research suggesting that inclusive school cultures can improve the health and well‐being of those with marginalized identities. Specifically, we review two examples of sets of ideas and practices in schools that create more supportive environments: (a) ideas and practices that recognize and include diverse identities and (b) ideas and practices that support interdependent ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. We also speculate about the psychological and behavioral mechanisms by which each protects health and well‐being, including reducing discrimination, increasing school belonging, strengthening positive ingroup identities, and allowing students to access culturally relevant support. We suggest that changing school cultures to make them more inclusive is one way to reduce health and well‐being disparities.

Abstract:Diversity-aware platform design is a paradigm that responds to the ethical challenges of existing social media platforms. Available platforms have been criticized for minimizing users' autonomy, marginalizing minorities, and exploiting users' data for profit maximization. This paper presents a design solution that centers the well-being of users. It presents the theory and practice of designing a diversity-aware platform for social relations. In this approach, the diversity of users is leveraged in a way that allows like-minded individuals to pursue similar interests or diverse individuals to complement each other in a complex activity. The end users of the envisioned platform are students, who participate in the design process. Diversity-aware platform design involves numerous steps, of which two are highlighted in this paper: 1) defining a framework and operationalizing the "diversity" of students, 2) collecting "diversity" data to build diversity-aware algorithms. The paper further reflects on the ethical challenges encountered during the design of a diversity-aware platform.

Abstract:Kinesiology administrators make a myriad of strategic decisions throughout their time in leadership. Effective leadership, particularly inclusive excellence leadership, is highlighted by the ability of an individual to utilize a diversity of constituent viewpoints, perspectives, and “voices” to guide their respective decision-making processes. This manuscript includes two students’ stories, as well as main points of discussion by American Kinesiology Association Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion workshop leaders. These perspectives provide not only foundational background information, including student identities, but also strategic actions that are necessary to develop all-inclusive and individualized programming that can successfully overcome systemic barriers. The main identified themes are (a) ease of access to accommodations, (b) a culture of inclusivity, (c) advocating, (d) establishing trusting relationships, (e) welcoming of Indigenous perspectives, and (f) flexible practices and community support.
