Abstract:Near-stoichiometric lithium tantalate (NSLT) crystal wafers were prepared by a vapour transfer equilibrium (VTE) method. The electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of NSLT wafers were tested by the four-probe method, laser pulse thermal conductivity and Vickers hardness testing. It was found that with the increasing Li content in the crystal, the conductivity of NSLT wafer first decreases, then increases and then decreases once more. The maximum conductivity of 4.4 × 10 − 12 Ω −1 cm − 1 is measured when the Li content is 49.64%. By analysing the thermal and mechanical properties of NSLT wafers with different Li contents, it was observed that the thermal conductivity of NSLT wafers first increases and then decreases with gradually increasing Li content. The thermal conductivity reaches a maximum value of 4.6 W/(m K) when Li content is 49.75%. Vickers hardness decreases significantly with Li diffusion and then increases slowly. In this study, wafers with Li content between 49.64 and 49.75% have more excellent electrical and thermal properties, but the Vickers hardness of the wafer does not reach its ideal value. Here, it is considered that there is an optimal Li content in the application of NSLT crystals in electronics, heat and mechanics, which is not necessarily the closest to the stoichiometric ratio.

Abstract:A two-stage vapor transport equilibration (VTE) has been employed to mitigate lithium deficiency in single crystals of lithium tantalate, LiTaO3. This work details a low-temperature vapor transport infiltration (VTI) anneal step that establishes a lithium-rich surface layer in the treated samples which annihilates the intrinsic point defect complexes of congruent LiTaO3 while allowing depth and concentration profiles of the point defects to be measured via confocal Raman spectroscopy at different stages in the process. These data are then used to calculate diffusion coefficients for lithium in LiTaO3, which range between 4.2 × 10-11 and 2.9 × 10-10 cm2/s between 950 and 1100 °C. The lithium gradients are removed, and sample chemistry is equilibrated during a second, higher-temperature anneal in an ambient atmosphere and confirmed via additional Raman measurements. Temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopy data are also used to confirm the presence or absence of lithium gradients in these samples and show that lithiation of LiTaO3 takes place at temperatures as low as 950 °C.

Abstract:Lithium tantalate crystal is widely used in optical devices, infrared detectors and surface acoustic wave devices because of its excellent piezoelectric, acousto-optic and nonlinear optical properties. The Li content of near stoichiometric lithium tantalate (NSLT) crystal is higher than that of congruent lithium tantalate (CLT) crystal. Therefore, the performance of NSLT crystal is better than that of CLT crystal in some aspects. This article reviews the physical properties, preparation methods and current research status in acoustics and optics of NSLT crystals. It also looks forward to the improvement of NSLT crystal preparation methods and their applications in surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters and optics. With the increase of Li content, the acoustic performance of NSLT crystals is expected to be comprehensively improved, achieving the application of SAW filters in 5G communication.

Abstract:The crystal ion slicing (CIS) fabricated heterogeneously integrated lithium tantalate (LiTaO 3 , LT) thin film is prospective in optical modulators, infrared sensors, and acoustic filters, therefore improving the transferring efficiency of the LT thin film will definitely promote its development and application. In the present work, the chemical reduction method was found effective to enhance the forming ability of H + implantation-induced defects and surface blistering efficiency of lithium tantalate crystal during the CIS process. According to the investigations by XPS, XRD, RBS, Micro-Raman, and TEM on the reduction-induced defects, H + implantation-induced defects, and the surface blistering behavior, the treated black lithium tantalate (BLT) present a higher blistering efficiency, confirming the contribution of reduction-induced defects in implantation and blister formation process than the referenced congruent lithium tantalate (CLT). In detail, the improvement is in ascribing to the existing intrinsic oxygen vacancy defects in BLT. These defects increase the forming efficiency of Ta defects in the implantation process and enhance the diffusion of H + in the blistering formation process, thus decreasing the activation energy for the blistering process and increasing the film exfoliation area. These results highlight an avenue for enhancing ion slicing efficiency of piezoelectric and pyroelectric single crystal oxide.

Abstract:V/LiF is a significant window material for investigation of phase transition of materials at ultra-high pressure which is a fundamental issue in condensed matter physics. However, the large mismatch of lattice and thermal makes vanadium growth on LiF as big challenge. In this current study, over 1.5 μm thick vanadium films were grown on LiF via facing target sputtering (FTS). The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed the grown vanadium films feature vertically well-aligned columnar crystals with numerous micro-sized gaps. For understanding the deposition mechanism, the behaviors of plasma discharge, transport of sputtered atoms and growth of films were simulated by particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision (PIC-MCC) and Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) methods, respectively. The growth model of vanadium film was established based on the experimental and simulation results. And the micro-sized gaps of columnar crystals contribute to release residual stresses generated by large mismatch, which can be explained by the grain boundary relaxation model.

Abstract:Tantalum lithium (LiTaO 3 ) is known as the "universal" material in the field of functional materials. However, due to its high pyroelectric coefficient and transmission efficiency, practical applications are limited. In this study, black LiTaO 3 wafer was prepared by a simple reduction process by using a new reductant composed of FeSiAl flaks, C nanoparticles, and Fe-C core–shell nanoparticles. It was found that the as-prepared wafers have tunable light transmission efficiency and resistance. Moreover, it was also found that the annealing temperature of 800 °C is the threshold temperature of the wafer in the reduction process. Furthermore, it was revealed that the underlying blacking mechanism could be attributed to the wafers' generation of TaC and O vacancies during the reduction process. This work presents a simple method to blackening, uncovers a novel mechanism, and provides tunable light and resistivity transmission efficiency of LiTaO 3 , which may serve as benchmarks for related studies and promote LiTaO 3 ′s practical applicability.

Abstract:Lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12, LTO) has already occupied its niche as an anode material for high-power and long-lifespan lithium batteries, but some novel directions for basic and applied research are still open. One of the most promising approaches in improving its properties, e.g., electronic conductivity and rate capability, is based on controllable defect engineering. The "defects" may be intentionally introduced into LTO via doping, surface modifications, and the synergy between them. However, the defects, which have significant effects to the electrical and electrochemical properties, are usually extremely dilute. Reliable material characterizations are essential and challenging, but the instrumental tools for revealing dilute defects are still insufficient. Herein, detailed analyses on the surface or subsurface defects of carbon-coated LTO were performed using various material characterization methods. Raman spectroscopy has been identified as a unique tool for the probing of structural defects.

Abstract:X-ray diffraction, infrared, and Raman spectra of Nd-doped LiTaO3 (LT:Nd) were examined. X-ray diffraction patterns of the x and y faces display the appearance of new diffraction peaks and the existence of microtwin crystals, indicating the microstructural deviation from a trigonal system of pure LT crystal. Infrared transmission spectrum shows more than seven strong vibrational bands in the high frequency region 1500–6000 cm−1. Their intensities and frequencies hardly change after annealing the sample at high temperature. We attribute these bands to the existence of defects and some metal and organic complexes in the sample. Similar results were obtained from the Raman spectra. In addition, the transmitted polarized light photomicrograph of the Z face of LT:Nd displays the occurrence of a helix dislocation. All experimental results indicate that the microstructural imperfection of LT:Nd can lead to some new optical effects.

Abstract:The absorption features of optically generated, short-lived small bound electron polarons are inspected in congruent lithium tantalate, LiTaO 3 (LT), in order to address the question whether it is possible to localize electrons at interstitial Ta V :V Li defect pairs by strong, short-range electron-phonon coupling. Solid-state photoabsorption spectroscopy under light exposure and density functional theory are used for an experimental and theoretical access to the spectral features of small bound polaron states and to calculate the binding energies of the small bound Ta Li 4+ (antisite) and Ta V 4+ :V Li (interstitial site) electron polarons. As a result, two energetically well separated (ΔE ≈ 0.5 eV) absorption features with a distinct dependence on the probe light polarization and peaking at 1.6 eV and 2.1 eV are discovered. We contrast our results to the interpretation of a single small bound Ta Li 4+ electron state with strong anisotropy of the lattice distortion and discuss the optical generation of interstitial Ta V 4+ :V Li small polarons in the framework of optical gating of Ta V 4+ :Ta Ta 4+ bipolarons. We can conclude that the appearance of carrier localization at Ta V :V Li must be considered as additional intermediate state for the 3D hopping transport mechanisms at room temperature in addition to Ta Li , as well, and, thus, impacts a variety of optical, photoelectrical and electrical applications of LT in nonlinear photonics. Furthermore, it is envisaged that LT represents a promising model system for the further examination of the small-polaron based photogalvanic effect in polar oxides with the unique feature of two, energetically well separated small polaron states.

Abstract:We prepared a series of lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO) thin film electrolytes by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering using LLTO targets in a N2 atmosphere. We also deposited the LLTO thin films in an Ar atmosphere under a same condition as references for comparison. The microstructure morphology and the composition of the thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. Results show that the thin film has an amorphous structure with a uniform surface and it is free of pinholes and cracks. Impedance measurements reveal that the ionic conductivity of the electrolytes is beneficial for all solid lithium batteries dependent on the lithium content at room temperature. We found that the amorphous LLTO thin film performs well and it has potential application in microbatteries for use in microelectronic devices.

Abstract:As a typical multi-functional soft-brittle ceramics material, lithium tantalate (LT) exhibits excellent electro-optical and ferroelectric properties and has now been widely applied in many fields, such as electro-optical modulators, pyroelectric detectors, and surface acoustic wave substrates. Traditional free-abrasive polishing processing of lithium tantalite crystals is generally fraught with poor efficiency for its lower fracture toughness. This study proposed a method of polishing lithium tantalite wafer by means of fixed-abrasive plates. A cutting force model and the relative cutting speed model of the machining mechanism of fixed-abrasive plates were first established, and then the main influencing factors of cutting force and relative cutting speed were analyzed on the basis of the theoretical model. It was found that cutting force is influenced by eccentricity and load, while relative cutting speed is influenced by eccentricity and the fixed-abrasive plates' rotation speed. Finally, single-factor tests were conducted on these influencing factors, and the comparative analysis between the experimental results and those in the theoretical model shows that they are highly correlated to each other. After 30 minutes of polishing under the optimized parameters w=60rpm, e=90mm, variable load, the surface roughness Sa of the workpiece is reduced to 1.234 nm, and the MRR reaches 14.821 μm/h.

Abstract:Surface anisotropy of spinel LiMn2O4 crystal is of significance for strengthening the lithium storage. In this work, we investigate the evolutions of surface orientations and oxygen vacancies in the LiMn2O4 cathode materials by the spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) technique. Firstly, the {111} lattice planes appear in the formed LiMn2O4 octahedra, and then the {110} and {001} crystal planes are observed in the subsequent truncated octahedral at a higher temperature or a longer annealing time. The LiMn2O4 crystals with dominated {111} and {110} planes and an appropriate amount of oxygen vacancies exhibits a superior cycling performance and rate performance, suggesting a synergistic effect of surface orientation and concentration of oxygen vacancies achieves an enhanced electrochemical performance. The introduction of oxygen vacancies can accelerate the diffusion of lithium-ions along {110} plane and strengthen the rate performance of LiMn2O4, as elucidated by the combination of Cs-STEM observation, X-ray photoelectronic spectra analysis and property measurements.

Evaluation and thermodynamic optimization of phase diagram of lithium niobate tantalate solid solutions

Abstract:The phase diagram of the lithium niobate and lithium tantalate solid solutions was investigated using experimental data from differential thermal analysis (DTA) and crystal growth. We used XRF analysis to determine the elemental composition of crystals. Based on the Neumann-Kopp rule, essential data of end members lithium niobate (LN) and lithium tantalate (LT) was created. The heats of fusion of end members given by DTA measurements of LN (103 kJ/mol at 1531 K) and LT (289 kJ/mol at 1913 K) were given as input parameters to generate the data. This data served as the basis for calculating a phase diagram for LN and LT solid solutions. Finally, based on the experimental data and thermodynamic solution model, the phase diagram was optimized in the Calphad Factsage module. We also generated thermodynamic parameters for Gibb's excess energy of the solid solution. A plot of segregation coefficient as a function of Ta concentration was derived from the phase diagram.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries promise significant improvements in energy density and safety over traditional liquid electrolyte batteries. The Al-doped AlxLi7-3xLa3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid-state electrolyte shows excellent potential given its high ionic conductivity and good thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stability. Nevertheless, further improvements on LLZOs electrochemical and mechanical properties call for an incisive understanding of its local microstructure. Here, we employ Bragg Coherent Diffractive Imaging to investigate the atomic displacements inside single grains of LLZO with various Al-doping concentrations, resulting in cubic, tetragonal, and cubic-tetragonal mixed structures. We observe coexisting domains of different crystallographic orientations in the tetragonal structure. We further show that Al doping leads to crystal defects such as dislocations and phase boundary in the mixed- and cubic-phase grain. This study addresses the effect of Al-doping on the nanoscale structure within individual grains of LLZO, which is informative for the future development of solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Topologically close-packed (TCP) intermetallic phases are attractive candidates for adapting the property profile of both structural and functional materials, but their mechanical behavior, in particular below their brittle-to-ductile transition, is generally still poorly understood. The systematic analysis of the underlying deformation mechanisms requires the fabrication of homogeneous samples with sufficiently high purity and large enough grain size. Here, we describe identified pathways on the example of Laves and μ -phases from the binary Ta–Fe and ternary Ta–Fe–Al systems with regard to input materials, liquid metallurgy synthesis, heat treatment, and metallographic preparation methods. Preparation routes for structural analysis by electron backscatter diffraction and mechanical analysis by nanomechanical testing, as well as the transferability of our approach to other alloy systems containing TCP phases, are outlined and discussed.

Abstract:The elemental segregation behaviors and interactions between point defects and symmetrical tilt grain boundaries (GBs) in TiVTa concentrated solid–solution alloys (CSAs) have been studied through hybrid Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics (MC/MD) simulations. A pure V model, a random TiVTa CSA with randomly distributed elements, and an equilibrated TiVTa CSA with Ti segregation were constructed to investigate the influence of chemical disorder and local elemental segregation on defect–GB interactions. For defect–GB interactions, GBs interact more strongly with interstitials than with vacancies. Compared with the pure V, the vacancy absorption length scale of GBs is greater, whereas the interstitial absorption length scale of GBs is shorter in TiVTa CSAs due to the chemical fluctuation and local lattice distortion. This means a higher recombination efficiency of point defects in TiVTa CSAs. The elemental (Ti) segregation in TiVTa CSAs can further enhance the sink strength of GBs towards interstitials, while simultaneously reducing their sink strength towards vacancies. Consequently, the preference effects of GBs towards interstitials and vacancies are amplified in the equilibrated CSA due to local ordering, thereby reducing efficient defect annihilation around GBs. These results provide fundamental insights into the irradiation defect dynamics of CSAs with body-centered cubic (bcc) structure.

Abstract:Identifying the structure of electrodes at atomic-scale remains a key challenge but is a fertile realm for groundbreaking fundamental research in the advanced Li-ion battery material field. In this context, the subtle structure evolution taking place during lithiation/delithiation in the bulk/surface of Li4Ti5O12 spinel (LTO) was probed using scanning transmission electron microscopy and found to undergo significant structure torque, namely Ti-O bond stretching/shrinking at different state-of-charge (SOC), which is not identified previously. This kind of nanostructure change plays an important role in facilitating the formation of capturing centers for the electron/hole pairs in a 3.80 eV insulating material as is LTO. Furthermore, with the aid of electron energy loss spectroscopy, the spontaneous charge transfer process, Ti3+ <-> e(-) + Ti4+, was confirmed in the fully lithiated Li7Ti5O12 surface as an essential step of the gas-releasing phenomenon. This new insight paves the way toward deeper comprehension and ultimately control of the electrochemical process for this and other important Li-ion battery materials.
