Abstract:Rate- and state-dependent friction law for velocity-step tests is analyzed from a thermodynamic point of view. A simple macroscopic non-equilibrium thermodynamic model with a single internal variable reproduces instantaneous jump and relaxation. Velocity weakening appears as a consequence of a plasticity related nonlinear coefficient. Permanent part of displacement corresponds to plastic strain, and relaxation effects are analogous to creep in thermodynamic rheology.

Abstract:The empirical rate‐ and state‐dependent friction law is widely used to explain the frictional resistance of rocks. However, the constitutive parameters vary with temperature and sliding velocity, preventing extrapolation of laboratory results to natural conditions. Here, we explain the frictional properties of natural gouge from the San Andreas Fault, Alpine Fault, and the Nankai Trough from room temperature to ∼300°C for a wide range of slip‐rates with constant constitutive parameters by invoking the competition between two healing mechanisms with different thermodynamic properties. A transition from velocity‐strengthening to velocity‐weakening at steady‐state can be attained either by decreasing the slip‐rate or by increasing temperature. Our study provides a framework to understand the physics underlying the slip‐rate and state dependence of friction and the dependence of frictional properties on ambient physical conditions.

Abstract:Developing the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of friction is required for systematic design of low friction surfaces for a broad range of technological applications. Intuitively, the thermodynamic work done by a material sliding along a surface is expected to be partially dissipated as heat and partially transformed into the change of the internal energy of the system. However, general non-equilibrium thermodynamic principles governing this separation are presently unknown. We develop a theoretical framework based on the transition state theory combined with the conventional Prandtl-Tomlinson model, allowing to set explicit expressions for evaluating the heat dissipation and internal energy change produced during the frictional stick-slip motion of a tip of a typical friction force microscope (FFM). We use the formalism to quantify the heat dissipation for a range of parameters relevant to materials in practical applications of nanoscale friction.

Abstract:A theoretical account is given of the microscopic basis of the rate- and state-dependent friction (RSF) law. The RSF law describes rock friction quantitatively and therefore it is commonly used to model earthquakes and the related phenomena. But the RSF law is rather empirical and the theoretical basis has not been very clear. Here we derive the RSF law starting from constitutive laws for asperities, and give the atomistic expressions for the empirical RSF parameters. In particular, we show that both the length constant and the state variable are given as the 0th weighted power means of the corresponding microscopic quantities: a linear dimension and the contact duration of each asperity. As a result, evolution laws for the state variable can be derived systematically. We demonstrate that the aging and the slip laws can be derived and clarify the approximations behind these two major evolution laws. Additionally, the scaling properties of the length constant are clarified for fractal distribution of asperities.

Abstract:The complexity of the frictional dynamics at the microscopic scale makes difficult to identify all of its controlling parameters. Indeed, experiments on sheared elastic bodies have shown that the static friction coefficient depends on loading conditions, the real area of contact along the interfaces and the confining pressure. Here we show, by means of numerical simulations of a 2D Burridge-Knopoff model with a simple local friction law, that the macroscopic friction coefficient depends non-monotonically on the bulk elasticity of the system. This occurs because elastic constants control the geometrical features of the rupture fronts during the stick-slip dynamics, leading to four different ordering regimes characterized by different orientations of the rupture fronts with respect to the external shear direction. We rationalize these results by means of an energetic balance argument.

Abstract:The Dieterich-Ruina rate-and-state friction model is transferred to a bulk variant and the state variable (aging) influencing the dissipation mechanism is here combined also with a damage influencing standardly the elastic response. As the aging has a separate dynamics, the overall model does not have a standard variational structure. A one-dimensional model is investigated as far as the steady-state existence, localization of the ataclastic core, and its time response, too. Computational experiments with a damage-free variant show stick-slip behavior (i.e. seismic cycles of tectonic faults) as well as stable slip under very large velocities.

Abstract:Frictional properties of interfaces with dynamic chemical bonds have been the subject of intensive experimental investigation and modeling, as it provides important insights into the molecular origin of the empirical rate and state laws, which have been highly successful in describing friction from nano to geophysical scales. Using previously developed theoretical approaches requires time-consuming simulations that are impractical for many realistic tribological systems. To solve this problem and set a framework for understanding microscopic mechanisms of friction at interfaces including multiple microscopic contacts, we developed an analytical approach for description of friction mediated by dynamical formation and rupture of microscopic interfacial contacts, which allows to calculate frictional properties on the time and length scales that are relevant to tribological experimental conditions. The model accounts for the presence of various types of contacts at the frictional interface and predicts novel dependencies of friction on sliding velocity, temperature, and normal load, which are amenable to experimental observations. Our model predicts the velocity-temperature scaling, which relies on the interplay between the effects of shear and temperature on the rupture of interfacial contacts. The proposed scaling can be used to extrapolate the simulation results to a range of very low sliding velocities used in nanoscale friction experiments, which is still unreachable by simulations. For interfaces including two types of interfacial contacts with distinct properties, our model predicts novel double-peaked dependencies of friction on temperature and velocity. Our work provides a promising avenue for the interpretation of the experimental data on friction at interfaces including microscopic contacts and opens new pathways for the rational control of the frictional response.

Abstract:In an earlier publication (Serrano et al. 2014), the theoretical basis for evaluating the shear strength in rock joints was presented and used to derive an equation that governs the relationship between tangential and normal stresses on the joint during slippage between the joint faces. In this paper, the theoretical equation is applied to two non-linear failure criteria by using non-associated flow laws, including the modified Hoek and Brown and modified Mohr-Coulomb equations. The theoretical model considers the geometric dilatancy, the instantaneous friction angle, and a parameter that considers joint surface roughness as dependent variables. This model uses a similar equation structure to the empirical law that was proposed by Barton in 1973. However, a good correlation with the empirical values and, therefore, Barton's equation is necessary to incorporate a non-associated flow law that governs breakage processes in rock masses and becomes more significant in highly fractured media, which can be induced in a rock joint. A linear law of dilatancy is used to assess the importance of the non-associated flow to obtain very close values for different roughness states, so the best results are obtained for null material dilatancy, which considers significant changes that correspond to soft rock masses or altered zones of weakness.

The flow rule for debonding the adhesion is considered rate-independent and unidirectional, and a thermodynamically consistent model is derived and analysed as far as the existence of a weak solution is concerned.

Abstract:Abstract Adhesion is one of essences with respect to rubber friction because the magnitude of the friction force is closely related to the magnitude of adhesion on a real contact area. However, the real contact area during sliding depends on the state and history of the contact surface. Therefore, the friction force occasionally exhibits rate-, state-, and pressure dependency. In this study, to rationally describe friction and simulate boundary value problems, a rate-, state-, and pressure-dependent friction model based on the elastoplastic theory was formulated. First, the evolution law for the friction coefficient was prescribed. Next, a nonlinear sliding surface (frictional criterion) was adopted, and several other evolution laws for internal state variables were prescribed. Subsequently, the typical response characteristics of the proposed friction model were demonstrated, and its validity was verified by comparing the obtained results with those of experiments conducted considering the contact surface between a rough rubber hemisphere and smooth acrylic plate.

Does the direct effect of friction increase continuously with absolute temperature?

Abstract:Constitutive models of fault friction form the basis of physics-based simulations of seismic activity. A generally accepted framework for the slip-rate and state dependence of friction involves a thermally activated process, whereby the probability of slip along microasperities adheres to an Arrhenius law. This model, which has become widely adopted among experimentalists and theoreticians, predicts a continuous increase of the direct effect with absolute temperature, but is it observed experimentally? Leveraging comprehensive laboratory data across diverse hydrothermal, barometric, and lithological conditions, we demonstrate that, contrary to the classical view, the direct effect for a given deformation mechanism remains largely temperature-independent. Instead, the incremental shifts in the direct effect often coincide with the brittle to semi-brittle transition, across which distinct deformation mechanisms operate. These considerations challenge the validity of the classical model. Realistic constitutive laws for rock failure within the lithosphere must incorporate the contributions of multiple deformation mechanisms within active fault zones.

Abstract:I compare two one-state-variable, rate-dependent, and state-dependent friction laws, that is, the slip law and slowness law, through the analyses of stability conditions based on a dynamic one-degree-of-freedom spring-slider model, subjected to such two kinds of friction. Results show that at low velocities, the stability criteria for the two laws are equal and similar to the steady-state criteria deduced by Ruina (1983). On the other hand, at higher velocities, the stability criterion for the slip law depends not only on the parameters of the friction law, but also on the sliding velocity and state variable of the system, whereas the stability criterion for the slowness law is the same as that at low velocities.

Abstract:Frictional forces are a key ingredient of any physical description of the macroscopic world, as they account for the phenomena causing transformation of mechanical energy into heat. They are ubiquitous in nature, and a wide range of practical applications involve the manipulation of physical systems where friction plays a crucial role. In this paper, we apply control theory to dynamics governed by the paradigmatic rate- and state-variable law for solid-on-solid friction. Several control problems are considered for the case of a slider dragged on a surface by an elastic spring. By using swift state-to-state protocols, we show how to drive the system between two arbitrary stationary states characterized by different constant sliding velocities in a given time. Remarkably, this task proves to be feasible even when specific constraints are imposed on the dynamics, such as preventing the instantaneous sliding velocity or the frictional force from exceeding a prescribed bound. The derived driving protocols also allow to avoid a stick-slip instability, which instead occurs when velocity is suddenly switched. By exploiting variational methods, we also address the functional minimization problem of finding the optimal protocol that connects two steady states in a specified time, while minimizing the work done by the friction. We find that the optimal strategy can change qualitatively depending on the time imposed for the duration of the process. Our results mark a significant step forward in establishing a theoretical framework for control problems in the presence of friction and naturally pave the way for future experiments.

Abstract:To study the microscopic origins of friction, we build a framework to describe the collective behaviour of a large number of individual micro-junctions forming a macroscopic frictional interface. Each micro-junction can switch in time between two states: A pinned state characterized by a displacement-dependent force, and a slipping state characterized by a time-dependent force. Instead of tracking each micro-junction individually, the state of the interface is described by two coupled distributions for (i) the stretching of pinned junctions and (ii) the time spent in the slipping state. We show how this framework represents an overarching structure for important models existing in the friction literature. We then use it to study systematically the effect of the time-scale that controls the duration of the slipping state. We first find the steady-state friction force as a function of the sliding velocity. As the framework allows for a whole family of micro-junction behaviour laws, we show how these laws can be chosen to obtain monotonic (strengthening or weakening) or non-monotonic velocity dependence at the macroscale. By then considering transient situations, we predict that the macroscopic static friction coefficient is strongly influenced by the way the interface was prepared, in particular by the slip dynamics of the previous sliding event. We also show that slow slip spontaneously occurs in the framework for a wide range of behaviour laws.

The physics of fault friction: Insights from experiments on simulated gouges at low shearing velocities

Abstract:Abstract. The strength properties of fault rocks at shearing rates spanning the transition from crystal-plastic flow to frictional slip play a central role in determining the distribution of crustal stress, strain and seismicity in tectonically-active regions. We review experimental and microphysical modelling work aimed at elucidating the processes that control the transition from pervasive ductile flow of fault rock to rate-and-state dependent frictional (RSF) slip and to runaway rupture, carried out at Utrecht University in the past two or so decades. We address shear experiments on simulated gouges composed of calcite, halite-phyllosilicate mixtures, and phyllosilicate-quartz mixtures, performed under laboratory conditions spanning the brittle-ductile transition. With increasing shear rate (or decreasing temperature), the results consistently show transitions from (1) stable, velocity(v)-strengthening to potentially unstable, v-weakening behavior, and (2) back to v-strengthening. Sample microstructures show that the first transition, seen at low shear rates and/or high temperatures, represents a switch from pervasive, fully ductile deformation to frictional sliding, involving dilatant granular flow in localized shear bands, where intergranular slip is incompletely accommodated by creep of individual mineral grains. A recent microphysical model, treating fault rock deformation as controlled by a competition between rate-sensitive (diffusional or crystal-plastic) deformation of individual grains and rate-insensitive sliding interactions between grains (granular flow), predicts both transitions well. Unlike classical RSF approaches, this model quantitatively reproduces a wide range of (transient) frictional behaviors using input parameters with direct physical meaning. When implemented in numerical codes for crustal fault-slip, it offers a single, unified framework for understanding slip patch nucleation and growth to critical (seismogenic) dimensions, and for simulating the entire seismic cycle.
The Positions, Colors, and Photometric Variability of Pluto's Small Satellites from HST Observations 2005-2006

Abstract:Pluto's two small satellites, temporarily designated S/2005 P 1 and S/2005 P 2, were observed on four dates (15.1 and 18.1 May 2005, 15.7 February 2006, and 2.8 March 2006) using the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Here we collect together the astrometric positions of these two satellites (henceforth P1 and P2), as well as a single color measurement for each satellite and initial constraints on their photometric variability obtained during these observations. We find that both satellites have essentially neutral (grey) reflectivities, like Charon. We also find that neither satellite exhibited strong photometric variation, which might suggest that P1 and P2 are toward the large end of their allowable size range, and therefore may have far lower reflectivities than Charon.

Fault friction under thermal pressurization during large coseismic-slip Part I: Numerical analyses

Abstract:In this paper, we study the role of thermal pressurization in the frictional response of a fault under large coseismic slip. We investigate the role of the seismic slip velocity, mixture compressibility, characteristic grain size and viscosity parameter in the frictional response of the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical problem, taking into account the fault's microstructure. Starting from the mass, energy and momentum balance for Cosserat continua we derive the equations of our model. We complete the mathematical description using perfect plasticity and Perzyna viscoplasticity in the material constitutive behavior. We investigate both the rate independent as well as the rate dependent frictional response and compare with existing models found in literature, namely the rate and state friction law (Dieterich (1992),Ruina(1983a)). We show that our model is capable of predicting strain rate hardening and velocity softening without the assumption of a state variable. We observe traveling instabilities inside the layer that lead to oscillations in the fault's frictional response, like in the case of Portevin Le Chatelier (PLC) effect. This behavior is not captured by existing numerical analyses presented in Rattez et al. (2018c,b,a) and go beyond the established models of uniform shear (Lachenbruch (1980)) and shear on a mathematical plane (Rice (2006a)), which predict a strictly monotonous behavior during shearing. Recent experimental analyses, which have managed to insulate thermal pressurization from other weakening mechanisms (Badt et al. (2020)), corroborate our numerical results.

Optimal Energy Dissipation in Sliding Friction Simulations

Abstract:Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, of crucial importance in sliding friction, are hampered by arbitrariness and uncertainties in the removal of the frictionally generated Joule heat. Building upon general pre-existing formulation, we implement a fully microscopic dissipation approach which, based on a parameter-free, non-Markovian, stochastic dynamics, absorbs Joule heat equivalently to a semi-infinite solid and harmonic substrate. As a test case, we investigate the stick-slip friction of a slider over a two-dimensional Lennard-Jones solid, comparing our virtually exact frictional results with approximate ones from commonly adopted dissipation schemes. Remarkably, the exact results can be closely reproduced by a standard Langevin dissipation scheme, once its parameters are determined according to a general and self-standing variational procedure.

Abstract:The frictional properties of faults control the initiation and propagation of earthquakes and the associated hazards. Although the ambient temperature and instantaneous slip velocity controls on friction in isobaric conditions are increasingly well understood, the role of normal stress on steady‐state and transient frictional behaviors remains elusive. The friction coefficient of rocks exhibits a strong dependence on normal stress at typical crustal depths. Furthermore, rapid changes in normal stress cause a direct effect on friction followed by an evolutionary response. Here, we derive a constitutive friction law that consistently explains the yield strength of rocks from atmospheric pressure to gigapascals while capturing the transient behavior following perturbations in normal stress. The model explains the frictional strength of a variety of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks and the slip‐dependent response upon normal stress steps of Westerly granite bare contact and synthetic gouges made of quartz and a mixture of quartz and smectite. The nonlinear normal stress dependence of the frictional resistance may originate from the distribution of asperities that control the real area of contact. The direct and transient effects may be important for induced seismicity by hydraulic fracturing or for naturally occurring normal stress perturbations within fault zones in the brittle crust.

Abstract:Friction is a phenomenon that manifests across all spatial and temporal scales, from the molecular to the macroscopic scale. It describes the dissipation of energy from the motion of particles or abstract reaction coordinates and arises in the transition from a detailed molecular-level description to a simplified, coarse-grained model. It has long been understood that time-dependent (non-Markovian) friction effects are critical for describing the dynamics of many systems, but that they are notoriously difficult to evaluate for complex physical, chemical, and biological systems. In recent years, the development of advanced numerical friction extraction techniques and methods to simulate the generalized Langevin equation have enabled exploration of the role of time-dependent friction across all scales. We discuss recent applications of these friction extraction techniques and the growing understanding of the role of friction in complex equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamic many-body systems.
