Abstract:The symmetry breaking observed in nature is fascinating. This symmetry breaking is observed in both human crowds and ant colonies. In such cases, when escaping from a closed space with two symmetrically located exits, one exit is used more often than the other. Group size and density have been reported as having no significant impact on symmetry breaking, and the alignment rule has been used to model symmetry breaking. Density usually plays important roles in collective behavior. However, density is not well-studied in symmetry breaking, which forms the major basis of this paper. The experiment described in this paper on an ant colony displays an increase then decrease of symmetry breaking versus ant density. This result suggests that a Vicsek-like model with an alignment rule may not be the correct model for escaping ants. Based on biological facts that ants use pheromones to communicate, rather than seeing how other individuals move, we propose a simple yet effective alarm pheromone model. The model results agree well with the experimental outcomes. As a measure, this paper redefines symmetry breaking as the collective asymmetry by deducing the random fluctuations. This research indicates that ants deposit and respond to the alarm pheromone, and the accumulation of this biased information sharing leads to symmetry breaking, which suggests true fundamental rules of collective escape behavior in ants.

Abstract:Animal movement exhibits complex behavior which can be influenced by unobserved environmental conditions. We propose a model which allows for a spatially-varying movement rate and spatially-varying drift through a semiparametric potential surface and a separate motility surface. These surfaces are embedded in a stochastic differential equation framework which allows for complex animal movement patterns in space. The resulting model is used to analyze the spatially-varying behavior of ants to provide insight into the spatial structure of ant movement in the nest.

Abstract:Many species of ants forage by building up two files: an outbound one moving from the nest to the foraging area, and a nestbound one, returning from it to the nest. Those files are eventually submitted to different threats. If the danger is concentrated at one point of the file, one might expect that ants returning to the nest will pass danger information to their nestmates moving in the opposite direction towards the danger area. In this paper, we construct simple cellular automata models for foraging ants submitted to localized abduction, were danger information is transmitted using different protocols, including the possibility of no transmission. The parameters we have used in the simulations have been estimated from actual experiments under natural conditions. So, it would be easy to test our information-transmission hypothese in real experiments. Preliminary experimental results published elsewhere suggest that the behavior of foraging ants of the species Atta insularis is best described using the hypothesis of no transmission of danger information.
A cellular automata model for population dynamics simulation of two plant species with different life strategies

Abstract:Physical and social systems can be conceptualized in complexity theory which provides a framework for a refined analysis of local effects on global behaviors. And spatial dynamic models based on discrete time can be referred to as cellular automata (henceforth CA) models, which show advantages for modeling complex systems in a way that is conceptually clearer, more accurate and more complete than most conventional models of natural phenomena. In order to acquire more general knowledge of the behavior of complex natural systems, in this paper, we compare different life strategies of two plant species, i.e., Changium Smyrnioides and Anthriscus Sylvestris, via population dynamics simulations based on a spatially explicit CA model. And we further analyze some emergent effects (reproductive rate and the minimum viable population in particular) based on statistic features from the field investigated data. The results show that C. smyrnioides adopts a population reproducing strategy of low reproductive rate and low space occupying, with stable population dynamics, while the strategy of A. sylvestris can be characterized as high reproductive rate and space occupying, with unstable population dynamics under habitat fragmentation. Therefore, in the environment with external disturbances, the alternative strategies may lead to divergent global behaviors and patterns in the long-term, which is indeed the case in reality that C. smyrnioides turned to be an endangered species and A. sylvestris turned to be an invasive one, respectively.

Abstract:The chaos in traffic flow is studied based on the one-dimensional cellular automaton mode(Nagel-Schreckenberg Model).The time series of the traffic flow are generated using Matlab program.The changing processes of headway of the front vehicle and the following vehicle in the traffic flow were studied under the parameters combinations.The influence of the density and brake probability of vehicles on the movement of the traffic flow is discussed.The result shows that when the density of vehicles is bigger than a critical value,chaos in the traffic flow will appear.Moreover,the basic reason of chaos phenomenon is the intrinsic randomness of the traffic flow,among which the brake probability of the vehicles is the main factor.

Abstract:Ant colonies demonstrate a finely tuned alarm response to potential threats, offering a uniquely manageable empirical setting for exploring adaptive information diffusion within groups. To effectively address potential dangers, a social group must swiftly communicate the threat throughout the collective while conserving energy in the event that the threat is unfounded. Through a combination of modeling, simulation, and empirical observations of alarm spread and damping patterns, we identified the behavioral rules governing this adaptive response. Experimental trials involving alarmed ant workers ( Pogonomyrmex californicus ) released into a tranquil group of nestmates revealed a consistent pattern of rapid alarm propagation followed by a comparatively extended decay period [ 1 ] . The experiments in [ 1 ] showed that individual ants exhibiting alarm behavior increased their movement speed, with variations in response to alarm stimuli, particularly during the peak of the reaction. We used the data in [ 1 ] to investigate whether these observed characteristics alone could account for the swift mobility increase and gradual decay of alarm excitement. Our self-propelled particle model incorporated a switch-like mechanism for ants' response to alarm signals and individual variations in the intensity of speed increased after encountering these signals. This study aligned with the established hypothesis that individual ants possess cognitive abilities to process and disseminate information, contributing to collective cognition within the colony (see [ 2 ] and the references therein). The elements examined in this research support this hypothesis by reproducing statistical features of the empirical speed distribution across various parameter values.

Abstract:Ant species such as Temnothorax albipennis select a new nest site in a distributed fashion that, if modeled correctly, can serve as useful information for site selection algorithms for robotic swarms and other applications. Studying and replicating the ants' house hunting behavior will also illuminate useful distributed strategies that have evolved in nature. Many of the existing models of househunting behaviour for T. albipennis make the assumption that all candidate nest sites are equally distant from the ants' home nest, or that an ant has an equal probability of finding each candidate nest site. However, realistically this is not the case, as nests that are further away from the home nest and nests that are difficult to access are less likely to be found, even if they are of higher quality. We extend previous house-hunting models to account for a pairwise distance metric between nests, compare our results to those of real colonies, and use our results to examine the effects of house hunting in nests of different spatial orientations. Our incorporation of distances in the ant model appear to match empirical data in situations where a distance-quality tradeoff between nests is relevant. Furthermore, the model continues to be on par with previous house-hunting models in experiments where all candidate nests are equidistant from the home nest, as is typically assumed.

Abstract:The rationale to anatomically repair this tendon is to restore the functional biomechanics of the shoulder. Clinical and imaging assessment are required before undertaking arthroscopy. In this way, associated pathologies of the biceps and labrum may be successfully addressed. The arthroscopic repair of the tendon implies to use suture anchors and reinsert the tendon itself over the footprint. Results after arthroscopy are comparable to those observed after open procedures.

Abstract:Cellular automata belong to a family of discrete, connectionist techniques being used to investigate fundamental principles of dynamics, evolution, and self-organization. In this paper, a cellular automaton is developed to model the spatial structure of urban land use over time. For realistic parameter values, the model produces fractal or bifractal land-use structures for the urbanized area and for each individual land-use type. Data for a set of US cities show that they have very similar fractal dimensions. The cellular approach makes it possible to achieve a high level of spatial detail and realism and to link the results directly to general theories of structural evolution.
Spatial patterns and scale freedom in a Prisoner's Dilemma cellular automata with Pavlovian strategies

Abstract:A cellular automaton in which cells represent agents playing the Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) game following the simple "win-stay, loose-shift" strategy is studied. Individuals with binary behavior, such as they can either cooperate (C) or defect (D), play repeatedly with their neighbors (Von Neumann's and Moore's neighborhoods). Their utilities in each round of the game are given by a rescaled payoff matrix described by a single parameter Tau, which measures the ratio of 'temptation to defect' to 'reward for cooperation'. Depending on the region of the parameter space Tau, the system self-organizes - after a transient - into dynamical equilibrium states characterized by different definite fractions of C agents (2 states for the Von Neumann neighborhood and 4 for Moore neighborhood). For some ranges of Tau the cluster size distributions, the power spectrums P(f) and the perimeter-area curves follow power-law scalings. Percolation below threshold is also found for D agent clusters. We also analyze the asynchronous dynamics version of this model and compare results.

Abstract:Cellular automata(CA) is not only a discrete system in time,space and state,but also a local grid dynamics model of both spatial interaction and consequence in time.Because of its "bottom-up" research method,powerful complex computation function,inherent parallel computation capability,high dynamic feature,as well as spatial concept,it has powerful capability in modeling the spatio-temporal dynamic evolution of the spatial complex system.CA is regarded as a spatio-temporal dynamic method,and has capability of modeling two dimensional spatial evolution process.It is therefore widely used in many fields of geography.In the aspects of modeling research of urban spatial dynamic change,CA is used in urban modeling research in all seven continents except Africa and Antarctica. Particularly,CA is used in the urban growth modeling by more and more scientists after the 1990s. The integration of CA and GIS,on the one hand,can well enhance the spatial model computation and analysis capability of GIS.On the other hand,the powerful spatial processing capability of GIS can prepare necessary data and define valid cell transformation rules for CA and visualize the modeling results.In addition,some researches indicate that CA can be directly developed by raster GIS. Although the urban spatial change can be modeled by the integration of CA and GIS,each scientist in this field has different integrated methods.CA can be combined with neural network analysis,main component analysis,genetic algorithm,fuzzy logic,and other analysis methods as well,which make its capability of urban spatial change modeling more powerful.

Abstract:A new kind of cellular automaton (CA) for the study of the dynamics of urban systems is proposed. The state of a cell is not described using a finite set, but by means of continuum variables. A population sector is included, taking into account migration processes from and towards the external world. The transport network is considered through an integration index describing the capability of the network to interconnect the different parts of the city. The time evolution is given by Poisson distributed stochastic jumps affecting the dynamical variables, with intensities depending on the configuration of the system in a suitable set of neighbourhoods. The intensities of the Poisson processes are given in term of a set of potentials evaluated applying fuzzy logic to a practical method frequently used in Switzerland to evaluate the attractiveness of a terrain for different land uses and the related rents. The use of a continuum state space enables one to write a system of differential equations for the time evolution of the CA and thus to study the system from a dynamical systems theory perspective. This makes it possible, in particular, to look systematically for bifurcations and phase transitions in CA based models of urban systems.

Adaptive movement strategy in rock-paper-scissors models

Abstract:Organisms may respond to local stimuli that benefit or threaten their fitness. The adaptive movement behaviour may allow individuals to adjust their speed to maximise the chances of being in comfort zones, where death risk is minimal. We investigate spatial cyclic models where the rock-paper-scissors game rules describe the nonhierarchical dominance. We assume that organisms of one out of the species can control the mobility rate in response to the information obtained from scanning the environment. Running a series of stochastic simulations, we quantify the effects of the movement strategy on the spatial patterns and population dynamics. Our findings show that the ability to change mobility to adapt to environmental clues is not reflected in an advantage in cyclic spatial games. The adaptive movement provokes a delay in the spatial domains occupied by the species in the spiral waves, making the group more vulnerable to the advance of the dominant species and less efficient in taking territory from the dominated species. Our outcomes also show that the effects of adaptive movement behaviour accentuate whether most individuals have a long-range neighbourhood perception. Our results may be helpful for biologists and data scientists to comprehend the dynamics of ecosystems where adaptive processes are fundamental.

Abstract:Local interactions, when individuals meet, can regulate collective behaviour. In a system without any central control, the rate of interaction may depend simply on how the individuals move around. But interactions could in turn influence movement; individuals might seek out interactions, or their movement in response to interaction could influence further interaction rates. We develop a general framework to address these questions, using collision theory to establish a baseline expected rate of interaction based on proximity. We test the models using data from harvester ant colonies. A colony uses feedback from interactions inside the nest to regulate foraging activity. Potential foragers leave the nest in response to interactions with returning foragers with food. The time series of interactions and local density of ants show how density hotspots lead to interactions that are clustered in time. A correlated random walk null model describes the mixing of potential and returning foragers. A model from collision theory relates walking speed and spatial proximity with the probability of interaction. The results demonstrate that although ants do not mix homogeneously, trends in interaction patterns can be explained simply by the walking speed and local density of surrounding ants.

Abstract:Colonies of ants are systems of interacting living organisms in which interactions between individuals and their environment can produce a reliable performance of a complex tasks without the need for centralised control. Particularly remarkable is the process of formation of refined paths between the nest and food sources that is essential for successful foraging. We have designed a simple stochastic off-lattice model of ant foraging in the absence of direct communication. The motion of ants is governed by two components - a random change in direction of motion that improves ability to explore the environment (facilitating food discovery), and a non-random global indirect interaction component based on pheromone signalling. Using numerical simulations we have studied the model behaviour in different parameter regimes and tested the ability of our model ants to adapt to changes in the external environment. The simulated behaviour of ants in the model recapitulated the experimentally observed behaviours of real ants. Furthermore we observe interesting synchronization in ant movement patterns which vary with the diffusion properties of the pheromones.
A model for collective dynamics in ant raids

Abstract:Ant raiding, the process of identifying and returning food to the nest or bivouac, is a fascinating example of collective motion in nature. During such raids ants lay pheromones to form trails for others to find a food source. In this work a coupled PDE/ODE model is introduced to study ant dynamics and pheromone concentration. The key idea is the introduction of two forms of ant dynamics: foraging and returning, each governed by different environmental and social cues. The model accounts for all aspects of the raiding cycle including local collisional interactions, the laying of pheromone along a trail, and the transition from one class of ants to another. Through analysis of an order parameter measuring the orientational order in the system, the model shows self-organization into a collective state consisting of lanes of ants moving in opposite directions as well as the transition back to the individual state once the food source is depleted matching prior experimental results. This indicates that in the absence of direct communication ants naturally form an efficient method for transporting food to the nest/bivouac. The model exhibits a continuous kinetic phase transition in the order parameter as a function of certain system parameters. The associated critical exponents are found, shedding light on the behavior of the system near the transition.

Abstract:We present a model of ant traffic considering individual ants as self-propelled particles undergoing single file motion on a one-dimensional trail. Recent experiments on unidirectional ant traffic in well-formed natural trails showed that the collective velocity of ants remains approximately unchanged, leading to absence of jamming even at very high densities [ John et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 108001 (2009) ]. Assuming a feedback control mechanism of self-propulsion force generated by each ant using information about the distance from the ant in front, our model captures all the main features observed in the experiment. The distance headway distribution shows a maximum corresponding to separations within clusters. The position of this maximum remains independent of average number density. We find a non-equilibrium first order transition, with the formation of an infinite cluster at a threshold density where all the ants in the system suddenly become part of a single cluster.

Abstract:In the realm of ant foraging studies, researchers commonly map the movement of ant colonies to Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) models based on the probability matching strategy, aiming to achieve optimal foraging outcomes. When faced with multiple resources, ants often exhibit remarkable flexibility by patrolling over the foraging area and maximizing resource utilization. However, the regular MCMC models face challenges when resources are multimodally distributed as they struggle to efficiently explore the state space, particularly when modes are distantly separated. Building upon the existing partial momentum refreshment model, we propose a stochastic approximation partial momentum refreshment (SAPMR) model that not only performs equally well as regular MCMC models in bimodal distributions featuring two closely located modes but also overcomes energy barriers associated with multimodal distributions characterized by distantly separated modes. The synthetic data generated using SAPMR exhibits characteristics reminiscent of ants' behavior such as Lévy-like patterns and maintaining a constant scaling function ( ≈1 ) when examining the relationship between the rescaled event speed and the rescaled time.
