Abstract:Personalised consumption and sustainable development are increasingly gaining people's attention. To meet consumers' individualised needs and achieve sustainable development, it is very important and urgent for manufacturers to make operations decisions on whether to implement a product variety and/or a product recovery programme. To explore some management implications for firms making those decisions, we develop three analytical game-theoretical models: (1) Model V where the manufacturer only adopts a product variety strategy; (2) Model R where he only adopts a product recovery strategy; (3) Model VR where both the product variety and recovery strategies are implemented. By comparing the equilibrium outcomes of these three models, we find that the manufacturer's optimal operations strategy largely depends on the market recoverable rate, the cost spillover effect, and the manufacturer's product variety efficiency. Through numerical examples and sensitivity analyses, we further examine the impacts of some key factors on the manufacturer's optimal operations strategy choice. With two model extensions, we find that the manufacturer's environmental preference and the government's tax and subsidy policy could motivate the manufacturer to adopt Strategy R or VR instead of Strategy V.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### The Problem the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to explore how manufacturers can formulate optimal product diversification strategies and product recycling strategies in the era of personalized consumption and sustainable development. Specifically, the paper analyzes the following issues by constructing three game theory models: 1. **Optimal decisions of manufacturers under different operational strategies**: - **Model V**: When the manufacturer only adopts a product diversification strategy, how to determine the optimal level of product diversification and retail price. - **Model R**: When the manufacturer only adopts a product recycling strategy, how to determine the optimal retail price and recycling price. - **Model VR**: When the manufacturer adopts both product diversification and product recycling strategies, how to determine the optimal retail price, recycling price, and product diversification level. 2. **Optimal operational strategies of manufacturers under different operational efficiencies or industry backgrounds**: - Should the manufacturer choose a product diversification strategy or a product recycling strategy? - After implementing one of the strategies, does the manufacturer have the motivation to introduce the other strategy? 3. **Impact of key system factors on the manufacturer's optimal decisions**: - How do key factors such as retail price and product diversification demand sensitivity coefficient affect the manufacturer's optimal decisions? ### Research Background With the improvement of living standards and the trend of product customization, more and more consumers choose to purchase personalized products to meet their needs. To cater to consumers' personalized needs and achieve sustainable development, manufacturers need to decide whether to implement product diversification strategies and/or product recycling strategies. However, these decisions are influenced by factors such as market recyclability, cost spillover effects, and the manufacturer's product diversification efficiency. ### Main Contributions 1. **Determine the optimal forward and reverse pricing and product diversification decisions**: - Compared with most previous studies, this paper not only considers one or two decisions but comprehensively considers the optimal decisions of product diversification, forward pricing, and reverse pricing. 2. **Explore the interaction between product diversification and product recycling strategies**: - This paper explores for the first time the optimal operational strategies of manufacturers in different market environments and introduces the cost spillover effect to measure the impact of product diversification on product recycling. 3. **Study the impact of manufacturers' environmental preferences and government tax subsidy policies**: - This paper further explores how manufacturers' environmental preferences and government tax subsidy policies affect their operational decisions, which is a less addressed issue in the existing literature. ### Model Description The paper assumes a rational and risk-neutral manufacturer in the era of personalized and sustainable consumption may engage in product diversification plans and/or product recycling plans. The manufacturer's goal is to meet consumers' personalized needs by increasing product diversification. The higher the level of product diversification, the more consumers the manufacturer can cover. In addition, the manufacturer may also participate in product recycling plans under the pressure of government environmental regulations. ### Model Solutions 1. **Model V (only product diversification strategy)**: - When the manufacturer only adopts a product diversification strategy, it needs to set the optimal retail price and product diversification level to maximize profit. By solving the optimization problem, the optimal retail price and product diversification level can be obtained. 2. **Model R (only product recycling strategy)**: - When the manufacturer only adopts a product recycling strategy, it mainly focuses on the recycling value of the product. It needs to set appropriate retail prices and recycling prices. By solving the optimization problem, the optimal retail price and recycling price can be obtained. 3. **Model VR (adopting both product diversification and product recycling strategies)**: - When the manufacturer adopts both product diversification and product recycling strategies, it needs to set the optimal retail price, recycling price, and product diversification level. By solving the optimization problem, the optimal retail price, recycling price, and product diversification level can be obtained. ### Conclusion By constructing and solving three game theory models, the paper explores how manufacturers can formulate optimal product diversification and product recycling strategies in the era of personalized consumption and sustainable development. The study finds that the manufacturer's optimal operational strategy depends on factors such as market recyclability, cost spillover effects, and the manufacturer's product diversification efficiency. In addition, the manufacturer's environmental preferences and government tax subsidy policies also affect their decisions.
